It’s Opening Day!

Welcome to our new little corner—the InsideCorner—of the intertube.  Happy you could stop by. Now, let me tell you a little about what we hope to do here at InsideCorner. Mainly, we aim to cover sports. Or, as our pal Bob Sturm might say “sporty, sport sports.”

But before you go all “Yeah, just what we need in troubled times is another blog,” please think of us as a blog in two ways only:

1. The format is pretty darn useful.

2. You still get to make comments and tell me what a lousy job I am doing (no reason for our beloved Nancy to have that task all to herself).

For more about what you’ll find at InsideCorner, please jump with me.

Hopefully the differences between this and your typical sports blog will far outnumber the similarities. We aim to truly cover sports. You’ll find the equivalent of full game stories, breaking news stories and features here, along with the occasional pithy comment. You’ll find analysis (however skewed it may be) and hopefully some insight into the people who make Dallas such a great sports town.  You’ll find me, Evan Grant, long-time veteran of the Dallas Morning News Rangers beat, along with a varied cast of characters. Mighty Mike Hindman, a veteran baseball blogger, will be a regular. As will Jeff Miller, formerly assistant sports editor of the Morning News. The D staff will drop by. And maybe even a few surprise guests along the way.

Our first priority is baseball coverage, mostly because that’s our passion. By the time many of you read this, I’ll be on the big bird headed to Surprise, Ariz., for spring training. We’ll be live blogging this afternoon’s game, answering as many questions as we can and getting you caught up on the first couple of weeks of spring training. And we’ll stick around to the end, getting you ready for the Rangers’  opener on April 6 against Cleveland.

Please don’t think of this as simply a baseball blog, either. The media business is in a state of transition right now and our staff of many personalities, but few bodies, hopes to keep you informed and up to date on everything that makes this such a vibrant sports market.

So, go ahead, throw out a first pitch. Let us know what you’d most like to know about the Rangers. We’ll be back shortly with lots more.

Thanks for coming by. We hope to make InsideCorner a regular stop for you.

Welcome, Grumpy. Glad to have you wearing a D uni.

  • Tim Rogers

I second that emotion. The stripes are slimming.

  • Jared

Very, very exciting news! Glad to see Evan and MJH having an outlet with backing. Really look forward to your report from Surprise Evan.

  • MIke Rhyner

this is some of the most bitchin’ news that could happen on a day where we’re going to be smushed like smush parker over the head with toowens….getting evan back where he needs to be? outstanding!!!….and the great mj on board? sublime!!!!….and there may even be others? very nice indeed….let’s get this thing going

  • Todd Trice

Great to have you back on the beat Evan.

  • walrus

Evan, great to see you’re back. Along with Sullivan, I always thought your stuff to be insightful and fair, and that you weren’t out to stir up controversy just to attract readers. I hope this is a better gig for you than the DMN. Good luck.

  • Section 339

    Rock!

  • Rangerette

I found you!!! I feel like the groupie on Flight of the Conchords!

  • Todd

Man, this is great. My 2 favorite baseball writers are EGrant & MJH.

  • KOK

best news of ST so far!

  • Josey Wales

    Major congrats.

Are you boys going to have a forum a la Newberg Report or Lone Star Ball or is the feedback you receive going to be like the DMN (place where we readers can leave comments)?

Awesome news for fans of the Great Game in DFW.

  • Snark

Tim MacMahon’s on line one for you, Evan. He seems to think you forgot to send his “surprise guest” invite, and he says he misses you.

Great to have you back on baseball again.

  • bstair

Wooo Hooo!! GREAT to have Evan back covering the Rangers and MJH here too…. powerful lineup!! Now I have another must read Rangers blog outside of the Newberg Report and Lone Star Ball

  • boomer1

Congrats EG and MJH! Spring Training just got much better.

  • mark

glad to see you back evan, i will be checking the blog regularly

  • Gastronome

Fantastic! What a coup. Nationally recognized as one of the best sports writers in the nation, if anyone can make following the Rangers interesting and fun, it’s Evan (even if that means only rooting for one over five hundred this season). Thanks also to Wick for stepping out and taking a chance on the future of sports journalism as others are shrinking from the challenge – you’ve upped your game. Congratulations and thanks to both of you for the moves. To the DMN and FWST sports readers: come on in – the water’s fine over here.

  • red3biggs

    Evan,

Looking forward to reading what you do best, and i dont mean talking about what you ate for lunch each day.

  • Brad Sham

This is grgeat news. There IS some justice. Look forward to coming back.

  • t ball

Awesome to have you and Mike with your own space here. But how, tell me please, how, will we get along with one less person reporting on the Cowboys? (sarcasm)

Greatly looking forward to your ST reports.

  • rob m.

Welcome back Evan. Are limited to just the blog or will you be writing articles for the magazine also?

  • jcAustin

Yay! Great to have you around again Evan and MJH.

  • Mat

Bookmarked. This makes me feel much better.

  • Rodney

    Congrats Gents!

  • Baseball Weenie

I am standing at full attention – great news!

  • Chuck the Aggie

AWESOME!!! It feels like baseball season now!

  • Stu

Do you still have a Hall of Fame vote?

    :notsure:

  • Stu

Glad you have a job, Evan. The Morning News coverage is pretty bland now.

  • Kaisersoze

Great stuff, glad to see Evan back on baseball and MJH here too.

  • Terrell Owens

Evan, any jobs there for an able-bodied man?

  • Big Unit

Did I ever mention the time that Greggo and I did the Eiffel Tower?

  • md

holy crap, this is great news! I am thankful that we won’t have to hear from some uninformed mouth when/if the Rangers begin to manifest this highly touted minor league system into some big league success.

first piece idea for Grumpy: true or false, the Rangers present DFW’s best hope for a championship within the next 5 years.

Glad to have you guys here/anywhere.

  • Gina M

Yay Evan! STILL waiting on mojitos & cubans. (um sandwiches).

  • bioaggie

Great to have Evan and MJH together on the Rangers beat. Look forward to the upcoming season. This is like Jordan and Pippen together with the Bulls. I’ll let you two pick who gets to be Pippen.

  • John McClane

Welcome (back) to the party, pal!

  • Katie McNew

Perhaps some deep thoughts by my favorite sports blogger would be appropriate: http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/2007/10/30/your-2007-08-dallas-mavericks-analyzed/ Maybe? No. Okay.

  • dfwsportsfan87

What a great day. Mavs beat the Spurs. T.O. and Bad Roy are cut. There is a super fine chick across from me in the computer lab. And now Evan and MJH on a baseball blog together. Now if only my professor would email me and cancel class….

  • Ehren

Evan! Thanks for staying in Dallas! I’ve been bugging Richard D about your status. Just might see you at Spring Training!

  • blalockag

Wow, awesome, awesome news. I felt really bad that you got marginalized from the Rangers beat. Especially when you were the guy i read every single day for the last few summers. Its awesome to have you back evan, i hope you can stay at this gig for quite some time.

  • Jimbo

I’m swelling with sports tears. Great friggin day!

  • Habib

    Congrats to you Mr. G
Happy to see that you are doing fine and doing what you love.
We are lucky to have your voice back and enjoy it.
    All the best to you.

  • Andrew in Boston

Glad to see you on the interweb again Evan. You and Mike are the new dynamic duo.

  • Mr. Pink

    Welcome back, Evan,

Curious, are you & MJH going to interact with the bloggers or are we just tossing comments out there into the ethosphere?

Aren’t you fracturing / further dividing the decent commenters? Do we have any set ground
    rules?

  • Dr. Know

Thank God! Evan Grant is the best damn baseball writer working in this town, and I’m very happy he’s got a forum with the D Magazine empire. Wick Allison and his better half should get the friggin genius award for putting this together.

  • Habib

G money let me ask you some ????
How many burgers at in & out so far?
Are you still able to vote on HOF?
Is your pay greater than it was at that other place?
If not then you need a new agent.
    I could be helpful.
I feel like my missing brother is found.

  • Tom

Now we know the answer to the question, “Will D ever have a sports blog?”
    Nice work, boys.

  • MIssing Dots

Ladies and Gents, I proudly announce that the switch-hitting and long time battery mates (that’s pitcher/catcher combo for those non-baseball speaking fans), EG and MJH, are back in swing of things.

  • Dustin Pedroia

    Meh.

  • Janette

I am really glad to see you covering the Rangers!

  • Brian Thomas

Fantastic news, Evan and Mike. We be lucky to have you.

  • corey

Evan, looks great and it’s almost like i’m there with you..

Great news on Elvis…will he be able to hit at this level yet…?

  • Cameron

    Evan,

Fantastic news. So so so good to have you back! Makes my day.

  • Nancy

Evan, it’s a happy day when I can read your baseball news! Congratulations on the new gig.

  • Tom B

    Evan,
I wouldn’t have ever thought of looking for you here nor would I have been to this site w/o your participation. LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!

  • bhudson

Oh, man! Glad you’re back where you belong: covering baseball. Also glad you stayed in this market. Good Luck!

  • manderskat

Evan, glad to have you back in the saddle! To heck with the DMN (keeping it semi-clean for the family-oriented website). I’ll be checking in often. Tallyho!!

  • Alan in Napa Valley

Glad to hear it, Evan. Will I still see you at the A’s games?

  • Cory

Glad to have you back Evan! Something that would be great would be if you did weekly newsletters with Q&A similar to what you did at the DMN.

  • M Markwardt

Mike, I’ve been in withdrawals since you quit writing on Newberg’s site. You were the sanity and realist needed there. I’m thrilled to be able to read your thoughts again. For everyone else, if you haven’t read Mike’s work, you are going to love his addition.

  • Ivan M

Glad to have you back Evan!!! The rangers fans needed you!!!

  • paljoey

Great move. And IC’s opening day was on my birthday, no less. Good karma, Muh. Jeff will be great, too. Y’all go get ‘em.
