Game Report: Rangers 10, Padres 7

RHP Kevin Millwood continued to push his spring training pitch count to levels never seen since he arrived in Texas. And LHP Derek Holland continued to show skills that haven’t been since by a Rangers prospect in a long, long time Sunday as the Rangers broke a three-game losing streak in Surprise, Ariz.. Millwood threw 70 pitches in the game and another 15-20 in the bullpen; Holland pitched the final two innings and struck out three. He threw a 96 mph fastball in the ninth inning and followed it up with an 81 mph slider for one of his three strikeouts.

The good: 1B Chris Davis hit his first home run of the spring Sunday, driving a 3-and-2 fastball from LHP Nick Schmidt over the left field fence in the six-run fourth inning. Davis, whose team lead in spring at-bats is due partly to the club wanting to let him work out of his early funk, has six hits in his last 16 at-bats. Davis’ batting average had fallen as low as .167 early in the week.

The bad: LHP Joe Torres, formerly the Los Angeles Angels’ top pitching prospect, came to camp with a chance to force his way into the Rangers’ bullpen, but back spasms and poor command have taken him out of the mix. Torres walked four and allowed a pair of runs in an inning Sunday. Torres has allowed seven walks in 1.1 innings since returning from the back spasm.

The streaky: INF Joaquin Arias homered in his only at bat of the game. Arias has seven hits in his last nine at-bats. He pushed his spring batting average to .550. It was, however, the first time he’s reached base this spring on anything other than a single.

On deck: The Rangers are off on Monday and resume play Tuesday at Surprise Stadium against the Cleveland Indians at 3:05 CDT. That game will be available via a webcast at the Rangers official site.
