SURPRISE, Ariz. – Rangers general manager Jon Daniels acknowledged the team is likely to decline to add non-roster outfielder Andruw Jones to the 40-man roster by Friday, thus giving the 10-time Gold Glove winner a chance to take free agency.
Daniels said the Rangers would like to keep Jones in camp if he elects not to exercise the escape clause in his contract, but it’s clear he does not have a role on the major league team. He has not started an “A” game in a week. Jones has been playing primarily in minor league games this week.
The next decision is now up to Jones. He has said on multiple occasions this week that he would wait to speak with agent Scott Boras about his options. The Rangers have tried to touch base with Boras, but have been unsuccessful. Jones did, however, say earlier this spring that he was open to extending his time with the Rangers if it appeared the team was undecided about whether he’d open the year on the roster. There doesn’t appear to be any uncertainty on the Rangers’ front. They will go with an outfield of LF David Murphy, CF Josh Hamilton and RF Nelson Cruz. OF Marlon Byrd would be the primary backup at all three positions with DH-OF Frank Catalanotto another option in left.
Jones, who hit .158 for the Los Angeles Dodgers last year, struck out in 10 of his first 14 spring at-bats. Since then Jones has six hits in 17 at-bats for a. 258 spring batting average. He has a total of 14 strikeouts in 31 at-bats.
Meh…. Hopefully he just leaves quietly. As for Boras, that guy annoys me to no end. I’m sure he has so many other pressing matters that he can’t return a phone call.
Well Andruw it’s been fun except the part watching you striking out all the time. Hopefully someone gives him a chance I can’t believe he fell apart so quickly. 2005 wasn’t that long ago.
This makes me happy.
