With his father in the opposing dugout, Rangers minor league 1B Chad Tracy hit a seventh-inning grand slam to break a 4-4 tie Saturday afternoon in Surprise. Tracey’s father, Jim, is a coach for the Rockies. The win was the Rangers sixth consecutive victory. They have scored at least eight runs in each of the wins. The homer came in Chad Tracy’s first major league exhibition at-bat of the spring.
The good: RHP Kevin Millwood made an official quality start, going six innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Perhaps most significantly, it was Millwood’s fifth start of the spring, matching the total he amassed in the previous three springs combined. Millwood has pitched 19 innings this spring; he pitched 22.2 over his first three springs with the Rangers.
The bad: CF Josh Hamilton did not look quite as sharp on his second bunt attempt of the spring. Against a heavily-shifted infield in the first, Hamilton’s first bunt attempt rolled foul. He then ended up looking at Strike Three while attempting to square around. Hamilton bunted for a base hit against San Diego earlier in the week.
The return: LHP C.J. Wilson returned from missing a week with a split callus on the middle finger of his left hand. Pitching from the windup, he struck out two in a scoreless inning. He got one strikeout on an 83 mph breaking ball one pitch after a 94 mph fastball. The only issue was a two-out walk.
On deck: The Rangers travel to Glendale to take on Los Angeles at 3:05 CDT. RHP Luis Mendoza will start for the Rangers, but the game is much more about relievers like RHP Frank Francisco and Josh Rupe each getting a chance to work more than one inning. The game will be broadcast on KRLD-AM 1080 and on FOX Sports Southwest.
