Like Sports Sturm, I’m doing some Internet research tonight on the Mavs. (Unlike him, I’m doing it to avoid work, specifically the feature I’m writing for the May issue.) And I just came across a couple of things that reminded me about how caustic and thin-skinned Mavs coach Rick Carlisle can be. My question is, as a sports fan, should I care? Does the coach of the team of which I’m a fan need to be likable? The answer is, of course, yes and no. Jump ball:
Update: Big Byron has the audio, and a hot sports opinion. Listen to it, be amazed, then return and read.
Double update: Both Fish and MavsMoneyball take up this topic today, and they are in disagreement with my take. Read ‘em hard, read ‘em strong.
Some background: About a month ago, I was listening to Carlisle in a post-game interview and I was struck by how the most banal questions seemed to irritate him. Not because they were boring, but because he construed them as negative. I chalked it up to him being tired or annoyed or whatnot. Then I read Richie Whitt’s column over at Sportatorium where he details another Carlisle incident, this time with official voice of the Mavs (VOTM) Chuck Cooperstein. Then, last night, on Carlisle’s Wikipedia page, I saw (but didn’t copy, dang it; now it’s gone) an entry about what a jerk he is, referencing a Bob and Dan segment on The Ticket that discussed this.
So, Bob, can you recount for us the thrust of that conversation. Because I don’t think it’s a big deal if a coach is grumpy or surly so long as they’re not dopey. (Sorry. Couldn’t resist.) I think Phil Jackson spends as much time mocking the media as anyone. But the difference is that his mocking, nearly disgusted demeanor doesn’t carry onto the court. It seems to me that Carlisle’s uptight, I’m-smarter-than-the-room attitude is evident on the sidelines. It even smacks of late-era Avery at times, which is quite scary. And if you haven’t proven yourself, I do think the troops are less likely to cut you slack if it appears you can be derailed by a simple question regarding the negatives to be addressed in an ugly win against an inferior team. (Which is what happened with Coop.)
So, questions for Zac and Bob and others: Will Carlisle’s attitude and cockiness become a problem, like it was with Avery? Also, does Mark Cuban have a soft spot for overly cocky people when he first interviews them? (Don Nelson, Avery, Carlisle … that’s a top-of-the-lineup group on Team F-U.) Thanks for taking my call, and I’ll hang up and listen.
Carlisle wouldn’t look so glum if he didn’t coach a soft bunch of has-beens with entitlement issues. I’d be beaten down if I had to answer the same questions over and over again. “Isn’t it obvious, Coop? We’re just not that good and we’re just not going to get any better.” That’s what he’s thinking anyway.
And don’t forget Carlisle’s dismissive interview with Norm Hitzges a few days ago.
At this rate, I predict that Carlisle will go down as the biggest “eh” coach in Mavs history.
EC: Interesting, well-written post. It’s little short, but if you worked in a couple of comments and made the pictures bigger, I think you can consider your feature finished!
I have nothing but hate for him since he basically humiliated the great Norm on his weekly show a few weeks back. F Ricky.
I agree with Dan McDowell that Carlisle is acting like a complete tool. Talking with the media is part of his job description, and the questions he is answering aren’t even that big a deal. If he treats his players the same way he treats the media he won’t make it here long. And that would be fine by me. The Mavs seem to be quickly approaching the blow it up from top to bottom stage as they slip deeper into mediocrity.
He is quite the Rick with the ‘p’. It’s all about results, and he is what he is an average at best coach. He doesn’t get more than expected results. When he was with the Pacers and the Pistons his teams were exactly what the talent level showed and that’s no different here. I’m all for ****iness, I think it is a mindset competitive people need to have, but that shouldn’t translate to how you treat other people. The guy has the attitute of an MVP when he’s simply the 8th man. I’d be happy blowing this thing up and starting up the rbuilding process instead of wallowing in averageness for the next 5 years, which is what this team, led by Rick, will be.
Eric- I think the audio tells the story better than I could. I think he is an interesting fellow, because a few months ago, he was in the media. Now, he seems to resent any question sent his way. I recall back in December, he was annoyed that he was asked a question by a media member who had not attended most of the games. Sorry, coach, but TV provides pretty good coverage of the teams these days, and some of us cannot attend all of your games.
The bottom line is taken from Bull Durham; “win 20 in the show, and you can have fungus on your shower shoes. Until you do that, it means you are a slob”. Act like Bob Knight after you go 32-0 and win the National Title. Do it during your first year on the job in a new city that doesn’t care what you did elsewhere, and people will begin to think you are a miserable so and so.
Without a track record here, he has at least 2 public “dress down” moments with Mr. Norm and Chuck. That is taking on some pretty respected broadcasters.
I first became aware of Carlisle’s atitude when Donovan asked him about J.J. Berea during the winter… The way he attacked Donnie was completely uncalled for and totally unprofessional.
The Mavs suck and Carlisle swallows. Let them RIP.
