NFL DRAFT Junkie – Episode 1 – Aaron Curry

If there are two things I like, it is the NFL Draft and YouTube. So, it gives me great joy to prepare for the NFL Draft by using YouTube. I think we all should.

Last week, at that old blogging home, I tackled the controversial case of Alabama OT Andre Smith, which I think you should consider.

Well, today, after Wake Forest had its pro day on Monday, we must get comfortable with LB Aaron Curry as the player with the label “player in the draft that appears to be flawless in the eyes of the NFL scouts.”

But, why should you listen to those guys? Do what I do. Watch the film.

Thankfully, some NFL Draft junkie/psychopath decided to cut up the game film of Aaron Curry and Wake Forest in several of their games this year. I can live without the music that accompanies it all, but the film is very compelling.

Charlie Casserley suggested the other day that he is the best LB in the draft in a decade. Better than Lavar Arrington who went #2 in 2000, and better than AJ Hawk who went #5 in 2006.

Watch the video for yourself:

I’ll say this. He closes on the ball like a DB, but hits like a LB. He is certainly capable of being that rare LB that is on the field for 3 downs. The USC LB, Brian Cushing, who is also a 1st rounder, was only a 2 down LB in college!

Are you telling me that Curry is better than Bobby Carpenter? There is no way. Bill Parcells says so.

I agree the guy is a player, but I find it a little hard to listen to what Charlie Casserly has to say when it comes to player evaluation

Hey Celeste – Bob’s stealing your topic.

The NFL draft geek room is big enough for two bald men, sir.

Big Cat – What’s wrong with Casserly’s opinion? His 3 Super Bowl Rings??

  • ryan

The same caserly that took super mario over bush/vince/leinart which eventually got him wrongfully fired?? He seemed to evaluate those players pretty well

  • Big Cat

Yeah the same Casserly that took Travis Johnson…That refused to protect David Carr even though he was the most sacked QB in the league…That guy…He’s made a couple of good moves (Fell into Mario Williams because of signability) and DeMeco Ryans was a steal, but that’s about it…Next we should ask what Matt Millen thinks about Curry

  • TTTB

Comparing Casserly to Millen is quite a stretch. Maybe you should stick to American Idol blogging and leave sports to the big boys?

  • Big Cat

Perhaps you should get back to work

    oooo nice back and forth

We work together, it’s cool we’re both timewasting here rather than filling out TPS reports

Bob, I think you’re spot on. This guy is going to be a monster. I was really impressed with his ability to drive through the ball carrier on tackles. He positions himself really well, and is almost always square to the runner on contact. Even when he is not, he has enough agility and closing speed to get back to them and the presence of mind to go low and wrap up. He doesn’t appear to gun for the big hit, but has such great form and leverage that a lot of his tackles look really hard. He can fend off tight ends and even the occasional tackle in run blocking off the corner, and gets off those blocks really well. Great positioning + solid tackling + good quicks = grade A prospect. Nice video find.

so…..who takes him? Where’s he going on the mocks?

  • Bob Sturm

He has been going #3 in many mocks to KC, but recently, I have seen him at #1 to Det. St Louis is at #2 and think he is worth a visit next week. Again, this is not an exact science, otherwise, Arrington would have been a monster in the pros, and James Harrison would have been drafted, right?

  • The AntiScouse

Best player or not, you don’t pay linebackers #1 money. He goes top 6-8, but not top 2. It’s not right, but it’s what’s done.
