You can tell the level of optimism about a fan base by the subject lines in the emails.
A few weeks ago, the subject lines said: “Richards return date?”, “Should we be resting Turco”, and “How to fix our power play”.
Now, the emails subject lines have switched to: “Stars draft position”, “Resigning Zubov and Lehtinen”, and “Is Jamie Benn ready?”
It is all a true sign that we are coping with what appears to be a playoff-less season as the Stars now need to run the table or turn in their equipment in 8 games.
But, as I have said, that might be a short term disappointment, but in the long-term, I am still pleased with the position the Stars are in.
So quickly, let us visit about the 3 relevant story lines of the day:
1) Stars Draft Position: With the 22nd best record in the NHL (On Thursday, they were 24th before the 1 point was gained) they currently sit at the #9 position in the draft. This is a pretty solid draft, and this would also represent the highest pick the Stars have had in a long, long time. As I have written plenty of times this season, for all the money we spend on scouting, most of the truly special players in the NHL were Top 10 picks on draft day. Yes, you can still get “pretty good” and “really good” elsewhere, but a large percentage of the top players in the league were all at the top of the draft. Regardless, all lottery scenarios aside, consider me a member of the Jordan Schroeder admiration society . And a pick in the Top 10 should get the American to the Stars. Of course, whether the Stars like him as much as I do remains to be seen. Here is a pretty cool site for following the daily moves by teams and prospects heading into the draft …
Pretty Weird, huh? We are actually looking at the draft board in late March. I don’t like it either, but sometimes you have to take your medicine and move along.
2) Resigning the Vets: This has provided some interesting feedback from the readers. It appears some of you want to cut ties with 26, 56, and 55 and turn the page. I personally wonder about the caliber of play that Sydor has been able to offer in the last few weeks, and wonder if he might be best served as an assistant coach. I realize his knowledge is very valuable, I am just not sure the miles haven’t caught up with him some. Time waits for no man. As for Lehtinen, I still think there is a spot for a Right Winger on this team, so if he is healthy and will take a discount of a pretty significant magnitude ($1.5?), then I want him back. For Zubov, it comes down to his hip. They must be 100% confident that they don’t get fooled by anyone’s optimism of a full recovery until it has happened. They put way too much stock in Zubov being fine this year and it haunted them. If he checks out physically, I would also want him back ($2 million?) but only if I am sure that he is able to withstand a season of NHL hockey.
3) Is Jamie Benn ready? I don’t know. He turns 20 in July, so heading into training camp, he will be the right age. But at Left Wing, is there a spot? Morrow, Neal, and Ott have that side locked down pretty well. Also, is the jump from the WHL to the NHL a good idea if you don’t desperately need him, or should you allow him the 1 year in the AHL in Austin to continue to develop by playing against grown men? I tend to like the Austin idea, but he appears to have certainly outgrown his level of competition at Kelowna. They just got done sweeping Kamloops (sorry, Razor) in a first round playoff series where Benn had 10 points (3 Goals/7 Assists) in 4 games and was a +5. This follows a season where he scored 46/36 for 82 points in 56 games and was a +27. And, he played for the Canadian Junior team during the holidays at a high level. He has the goods. The Stars just need to figure him into their puzzle.
And by the way, just like Morrow, Neal, and Ott, it appears he knows what to do when he drops his gloves…
I don’t give up on a team until they are eliminated (just ask the Cowboys) but that said we must address some issues. Although we can talk draft and potential, there are also some quality free agents to be had if we choose (and remember that Lehtinen, Sydor, and Parrish will be FA’s). Since we would are in need of a RW I think that Alexei Kovalev would fit well as would Alex Tanguay. Since Tanguay was injured and had a sub par year and a down one last year, he could be signed for less (so good value for dollar there). The talented Czech Marion Gaborik will be wooed by many teams which means we could make a play for him or more easily be able to sign one of the others on the market.
We are also in need of a scoring defensemen to play on the power play (as who knows what will happen with Zubie). Many like Bouwmeester (who I like as well) or we could pick up a vet like Scott Niedermayer as well. Now on to the draft.
I like Schroeder as well but am also a fan of a guy playing his off wing side. I really like Ashton and think he would be a better fit for the Stars as he has some size and can adapt to either side or play center when necessary and I would choose him over Schroeder or even choose him over Kane since I feel that Kane may not be as durable in the NHL given his size (6′ and 170 lbs.)
I like taking a forward in the draft as like RB’s in the NFL, they can play earlier than defensemen. I would rather have a rookie forward who can score than a rookie defensemen who cannot defend well. Late sleeper picks for me are Chris de Souza and maybe Gabriel Dumont.
In the meantime, let’s hope the Stars either make the playoffs or lose all of them so we get a higher pick. I prefer they make the playoffs, and thanks for the hockey talk over here.
Bob –
Stars appear to have plenty of cap room heading into the off-season…any chance we see Bouwmeester in a Stars uniform?
Tough to see them like this, but at this point they are all but eliminated (and who would want to see this team in the playoffs anyway? they’d be killed) so I am in that weird position of sort-of rooting for them to lose in order to have a higher draft pick.
I agree on Zubov and Lehtinen. They can both come back, but only on one year deals for less than $2 million. If they want more, it’s been fun, but see ya. We’ll see you at your jersey retirement ceremony in a few years.
This team needs three things to be a contender next year:
1.) Health – speaks for itself
2.) A big minute defenseman – could be Bouwmeester, could be Komisarek if Zubov returns healthy, or could be acquired through trade. Stephane Robidas is not more than a no. 4 defenseman. Daley is about a no.4 as well. Niskanen, Grossman, Fistric could be more, but they’re not there yet. The D corps needs a clear no. 1 guy (preferably one that can move the puck and play on the power play… JayBo would be ideal but hard to get).
3.) Turco’s return to form. hopefully this problem will fix itself with a healthier, defensively improved team next season.
If these things happen, this team could easily be a real contender in the West next season. Combine the young players already here with Benn, Vishnevskiy and the potential top 10 pick, and the team looks pretty solid for the future as well.
So it’s not all doom and gloom in Stars land if you look at the big picture.
Bob,
Stars are interested in Schroeder, but if they keep dropping one of the top six may land at their feet, where they just can’t pass over him.
Benn should start in Austin next season, but will be an injury call up and could grab a spot for himself.
Lehts is an ideal 3rd line checker at this point in his career and if he’s willing to accept 1.5 or less, bring him back. Same with Zubov if he’ll take an incentive laden contract with less than 2 million in guaranteed money.
They have to take a run at Bouwmeester but also need a contingency plan if that falls through. Beauchemin or Leopold preferably. NO Sydor unless he’s coaching. I never want to see him on the ice in uniform again.
