Settling Feeling: Rangers Appear To Have Pitching Staff

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – There is still a staff evaluation meeting on Tuesday and the Rangers have until Sunday to set their roster, but it appears the pieces of the pitching staff have fallen into place.

Put Kris Benson in your (tentative) starting rotation, Josh Rupe in your bullpen and, by process of elimination, Jason Jennings in the bullpen as well.

Manager Ron Washington admitted he wants Benson and Rupe Monday after the duo combined for seven solid innings in a 7-5 10-inning win over San Francisco.

“This is only my opinion, but Benson is one of my five,” Washington said. “Josh was on the edge for me; he eased back in by throwing strikes. But the decision is not as cut-and-dried as saying ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ There are other things to consider.”

“Both those guys have pitched very well,” GM Jon Daniels said. “There is merit to taking both of them with us, but we still have to look at it in the context of the whole staff and how it impacts the roster and we’ll leave that for later in the week.”

Jennings, who has pitched well in the unfamiliar role of reliever this spring, would likely get the final spot partly because he’s pitched well and partly because his competitors are being carted off the field.

RHP Dustin Nippert has not pitched in a game since March 19 because of a tight back. He is supposed to throw “live” batting practice Tuesday, but may not face major league hitters before rosters must be set. RHP Willie Eyre called off a scheduled performance in a minor league game Monday because of continued soreness in his groin. RHP Derrick Turnbow became the latest to come down with an injury, complaining of a sore knee on Monday. As a result, he was scratched from pitching against the Giants.

The Rangers also communicated to Turnbow, who could ask for his release Tuesday under the terms of his minor league contract, that he was unlikely to make the Opening Day roster. They’ve asked him to stay with the organization, but the next decision is Turnbow’s.

There are two things still to be discussed.

Somebody is going to have to tell Scott Feldman, who appears to be the odd man out in the rotation mix, that his services are more required in the deleted bullpen.

Then the Rangers must go about trying to figure out how to squeeze as many as six non-roster players (RHPs Benson, Jennings, LHP Eddie Guardado, OF Andruw Jones, INF Omar Vizquel and SS Elvis Andrus) onto a 40-man roster that currently has no openings. The team will be able to subtract two players easily by moving RHPs Eric Hurley and Joaquin Benoit to the 60-day DL. 1B Joe Koshansky, acquired on a waiver claim Sunday, will likely be sent back through waivers. Then it gets more difficult. If the club keeps Jones, it could release or trade Frank Catalanotto to open up a fourth spot. Then the Rangers would have to swallow hard and be willing to cut ties with two young players on the 40-man roster.

For once, though, it is a problem the Rangers truly enjoy trying to solve.

In a lot of ways, Benson forced this issue. His minor league contract doesn’t even have a free agency clause until May 5.

“I knew that to get a job, there were going to have to be some things I relinquished control over and the [escape clause] was one of them,” said Benson, who has a 4.76 ERA in 17 spring innings. “But it was never in my mind that I was going to have to go to the minors to start the year. My goal was to make the team.”

Benson on Monday became the third Rangers pitcher to record a quality start. He allowed a two-run homer to Juan Uribe in the second on a slider that has been a disappointment to him all spring. But after his outing, he went to the bullpen to continue working on a new grip for the pitch. Benson hasn’t thrown the new grip in a game, but still has a curve ball to fall back on for a breaking pitch.

When he left after the sixth inning, the Rangers were clinging to a one-run lead and gave the ball to Rupe and prayed he once again lined up on the first-base side of the pitching rubber. The change has made all the difference in the world, allowing him to throw his two-seem fastball for more strikes.

He retired the side in order on a ground out, a strike out of Rich Aurilia on a curve ball and a pop out. Rupe has faced 10 hitters in his last three outings and allowed three baserunners and no runs while getting seven ground ball outs.

The strike out was important. Last year, Rupe averaged .135 strikeouts per batter faced, which ranked 130th of 137 major leaguers with at least 50 innings last year. But part of his recent turnaround has been an ability to get ahead in counts with his fastball. And when falling behind, Rupe hasn’t been able to go to the more unpredictable curve.

“I just haven’t been in situations to throw it,” Rupe said. “I’ve been a little concerned about throwing it, but I know I want to throw it more.”

Looks like he will get the chance.

So who will be exposed to waivers from the active roster?

  • alan

I am SICK that the Rangers would expose younger players to keep guys such as Benson, Jennings and Jones…this is about 2010 and beyond, not about April 2009..SICK

here are my top candidates to move off the 40…. Mendoza, Metcalf, Catalanotto, Nippert, Eyre, not necessarily in that order

  • walrus

Metcalf would seem to be the one least likely to bite them in the butt later on. Even at that, I would hope he gets a chance somewhere else.

  • Goyogringo

Metcalf is a given to be outrighted if not traded. Kansky as well of course. The other candidates are IMO: Mendoza, Gabbard, Bannister, Eyre. They all have options, so I think they choose the 2 least likely to be claimed. I think Nippert is safe.

Doesn’t Tommy Hunter move to the 60 day DL….and if Cat leaves then only one more spot is needed?

  • dude in Afghanistan

Any chance Vizquel doesn’t make the team? Arias has played well enough to beat him out and save a waiver on a young player, don’t you think? I think Metcalf is still the only real option if MY goes down for awhile, so I’d be a little nervous to try to get him through waivers.

What does Eyre have that the Rangers protected him during the Rule 5? I guess it worked out fine, since we didn’t lose anybody, but Eyre is going to be 31 yrs old in July, missed all of 2008 with arm surgery, and has a career ERA of 5.23. Let someone have him if they want him that bad.

And the Rangers have Metcalf in the depth chart at 3rd ahead of Blalock…..Blalock is surely not able to man that more than a couple of games…….so it seems one of the pitchers has to go to accomodate the roster spot that Coach Vizquel is taking over Arias….thanks ok…..just want the price tag visable…….

I don’t mind seeing Eyre, Metcalf and Cat being removed from the 40 man roster; after that I start get nervous about dumping younger guys…

I can’t see the Rangers DFAing a pitcher after last year’s Galarraga fiasco.

  • JL

Alright, so I think it’s clear that Metcalf is a goner, maybe they can shop him for some cash before waiving him in hopes someone wants him but is low on the order. Eyre can leave too. So with the two aforementioned DL moves and Koshansky thats 5 of 6 spots. I think the last one comes down to whether they can get something for Cat or not. If not, I think they have to hold on to him temporarily, and let someone like Nippert be waived.

So Feldman is getting the SHAFT. I saw many of times last year Scott Feldman battled and ate innings every four or five days. The offense never showed up for him. Now Wash gives the nod to Benson, who could be better, but could be a bust. I think Feldman has earned a spot on the rotation, maybe not over Harrison or the questionable McFragile. Maybe Benson makes a difference but I would still reward Feldman, the only consistant starter last year.

  • JustSaying

Ram you reward players on mediocre and bad teams and you do what’s best for the team when you think you can contend…..Feldman knows that and if thats what the Rangers ask he’ll do it…….he’s a professional……

  • Ram1

JustSaying I understand where your coming from. Benson has had a good showing this spring and if it works out then Great. Eventhough Feldman came out of the bullpen last season he was about the only damn starting pitcher who looked like he wanted a starting job. Maybe last season was a bad season to evaluate Ranger pitching, but Feldman despite his record looked like he could be this teams No. 4 or 5.

  • Jesse

Out of all those I thought Mendoza showed a little something, but come on, these guys CAN’T keep turning out to be Armando Galarraga… right? Kris Benson’s WAY better… right?

  • rob m

Based on reports earlier this week the rotation would be Millwood, Padilla, Bensen, McCarthy and Harrison. It could be worse.

  • blalock

i dont have a problem with Benson getting into the rotation. If he can get back to his old form, he’s a quality 5th starter and will likely provide a better ERA than Feldman in that spot. Of course, he’s injury prone and unlikely to pitch a whole season, but then we should be able to use Feldman or even Holland at that point to fill in.

  • Time to Roll

As for me … Benson is on a short leash … but he’s earned the spot, and the team is potentially more solid with Feldman in the pen. Mendoza has exhausted his chances, IMO, and that ship has sailed … and I’m almost to that point with Gabbard … Cat deserves a shot with a team that can use him, if we’re hell-bent on keeping the player fka Andruw Jones instead … glad I’m not having to make these decisions …

  • Jared

For those wondering about 3B depth, first of all it’s probably not something that anyone needs to be concerned about.

But if MY were to go down for an extended period of time, I think German Duran would be the guy to get the playing time. He’s a more legitimate prospect than Metcalf.

  • Chris

my baseball pants are going crazy. Love this stuff.

  • Jon

Would somebody explain Warner Madrigal to me.

Last year my stomach would churn whenever he came in. Seriously, no lead was safe when he came in.

His ERA is now approaching twelve! So he seems to be on the same track for a repeat performance.

Why does everyone seem to think that they can “fix” him?

Clearly I am missing something here.

  • Dr. Pepper presents Batface McGee

You are missing the fact that Warner has only been a pitcher for 3 years. Wash put him in a terrible situation in his ML debut and predictibly got shelled. After that however, he was VERY solid. Give him some time and you will grow to love him.

Plus, the dude has an amazing afro.

All we need is a solid #2.
