OK, I made up the last part. We’re just trying to draw the crossover audience from SideDish.
Let’s get right to it. In reaction to LHP C.J. Wilson’s erratic performances in the first week of the season, the Rangers are enlarging their pool of viable eighth-inning setup options. Entering the season, Wilson was expected to be the primary setup man, with LHP Eddie Guardado as situational lefty and RHP Jason Jennings in a “utility” role. will still get chances, but manager Ron Washington acknowledged that both Jennings and Guardado are likely to get more key chances.
Washington said the Rangers met with Wilson after he lost a four-run, eighth-inning lead on Sunday, but declined to reveal any details. Wilson began 2008 as the Rangers closer, but struggled badly in the summer months and was demoted to a setup position, but never pitched in that role because of a bone chip issue that required surgery. Since the start of last season, his 6.34 ERA is the third highest among the 189 major leaguers with at least 40 appearances.
“It depends on where we are at in the batting order,” Washington said about how he will use his expanded pool of setup men.
If the Rangers are about to face mostly right-handed hitters, Jennings, who has not allowed an earned run in 3.1 innings, would likely get the call. If it’s a group that thrives against hard fastballs, Guardado would likely be the choice. If it is a team susceptible to a hard thrower, Wilson would be the most likely option.
7:08: The Cowboys schedule was announced about an hour ago and it includes a scheduling conflict with a Rangers game on Sept. 20. The Rangers are scheduled to play the Angels at 2 pm with the Cowboys’ home opener against the New York Giants scheduled for 7 pm. The conflict isn’t with the start times, obviously, but with potential traffic gridlock at the end of the Rangers game as the crowd is arriving for the Cowboys game. The Rangers are looking at scheduling options to move the game. The most realistic might be a split doubleheader on Saturday, but if either the Rangers or Angels are chasing playoff spot that’s not going to sit real well with either team. The most civilized option would be to have the Angels and Boston move the start of their three-game series at Fenway Park back a day to Monday, Sept. 14 when both teams are off, then the Rangers-Angels series could start on Thursday, Sept. 17 (currently a Rangers off day) and end on the 19th. That would give the Rangers a rare Sunday off day, but it requires MLB and three teams all cooperating. That’s a lot of heavy lifting.
7:15: RHP Willie Eyre is “probably not” an option for the bullpen on Wednesday, GM Jon Daniels said. The Rangers would still like to see Eyre pitch a two-inning stint at Oklahoma City before calling him to the majors. Eyre was scheduled to pitch two on Monday, but a stormy weather forced him to cut things short after one 20-pitch inning. Now, if the big league bullpen has another meltdown tonight, everything could change. But with the Rangers moving RHP Jason Jennings back to more of a setup role, having Eyre available for multiple innings would be significant.
7:22: Speaking of Jennings, the biggest issue with making him a full-fledged setup man is that nobody has any idea how he’d respond to pitching back-to-back days. He threw only 13 pitches last night, so it’s a possibility the Rangers might give the back-to-back thing a shot tonight. Jennings is healthy but with two years worth of elbow problems in his rearview mirror the Rangers will try to be sensitive about abusing him.
7:31: Chris Davis is 4-for-5 with a pair of homers since his “day off” yesterday, which lasted until about 30 minutes before first pitch. He just dumped his second homer of the week into the right field stands. And now, Baltimore’s Alfredo Simon is done after 1.1 innings and three homers. He’s apparently hurt. I’m guessing whiplash.
8:04: Red Dot has been vanquished. Green wins by several dot lengths. Green currently being drug tested.
8:13: Brandon McCarthy has let a 3-1 slip away. Now would be a good time for that elusive “shut-down” inning.
8:22: Well, it wasn’t exactly a shut-down inning. But McCarthy did get out of it with no runs allowed, thanks to a baserunning blunder the exuberant Felix Pie. He was doubled off first on a fly ball to center. After McCarthy allowed a two-out single to Brian Roberts, he struck out Adam Jones.
8:26: Beginning to wonder if that bout of dizziness isn’t still lingering around Jarrod Saltalamacchia. He’s been woozy at the plate since returning from last week’s brief vertigo-ish symptoms, which were attributed to an inner ear infection. Saltalamacchia has struck out twice tonight and is 0-for-13 with seven strikeouts since the dizzy spell.
8:29: The Nos. 8-9 spots (catcher and shortstop) since the start of the Detroit series are a combined 2-for-26.
8:37: Should point out that Salty is actually in an 0-for-15 with the first two of those hitless at-bats coming pre-dizziness.
8:41: See, our friends who haven’t been reading right now are probably shocked to hear that C.J. Wilson is warming up in the sixth. But you, you were here from the start, and know that C.J. is no longer the complete master of the eighth-inning domain.
8:43: After a pair of two-out walks, McCarthy gets Gregg Zaun loooking at a 90 mph fastball on the outside corner to end the inning. Now, interesting decision awaits Ron Washington. Does he send McCarthy back out for the seventh with 92 pitches and coming off a 25-pitch inning? Uneven as the start has been, if the Rangers call it a night, McCarthy has qualified for a quality start. Most disturbing aspect of this start has been McCarthy’s inability to finish off innings. He has faced 12 batters with two outs and has allowede six of them to reach base (four hits, two walks). Gotta put them away.
8:56: McCarthy done. Say what you want, but only he and Kevin Millwood have posted quality starts for Rangers this season. Huge outing for C.J. Wilson. Huge.
9:02: Saw only two breaking ball in a 14-pitch inning for Wilson. Pair of strikeouts. Crisp. Clean. Efficient. This is what the Rangers want to see. Locate the fastball. Simplify the repertoire. Conserve pitches. Perhaps the club’s talk with him has yielded some results.
9:17: Wilson couldn’t make it through two innings. Two walks in the eighth force Ron Washington to turn to Frank Francisco with two outs in the eighth of a tie game. The leaoff walk to Adam Jones after Wilson had him 0-and-2 is especially painful, even though Jones was then erased on a double-play grounder. Should have been put away earlier in count. Might have allowed Wilson chance to finish the inning.
9:34: Rangers may already be too dependent on the homer. Twelve of last 16 runs (over a three-game span) have come via homers, including all three runs tonight. Couldn’t do anything with a leadoff hit in the eighth.
9:41: So, what kind of effect do you think a walk-off win would have after this four game losing streak?
9:44: In the slumping Rangers category, add OF David Murphy. He’s now 0-for-13 for the season.
9:46: Did you know: The Rangers have been outscored 19-7 from the seventh inning on this season? The Rangers have scored just one run in the eighth or ninth innings since the four-game losing streak started.
9:58: The bullpen just seems to get messier by the minute.
10:15: Typical Rangers. Scoreless from second inning on, the fall down by four in top of 10th and already have tying run at the plate.
10:23: Another rally comes up short. Rangers leave tying run on base as Hank Blalock and Nelson Cruz fly out to deep right and left, respectively. Read rest in Post-Game Show. Coming up next.
What’s going with the red? Any idea if they’re pretty much adopting the red hats as the full time home gear?
That’s great Wash but next time we want you to bring us to a solution rather than a bunch of over caffenated bloggers……And tell Hicks he needs to sell that sissy ball team and focus his energy on TR…….we could care less that Chelsea just rubbed his nose in the toilet……..all that bad karma…
With the fear of sounding redundant, may I suggest once more that CJ Wilson can not handle an inherited lead to start an inning. Start the inning with anyone else and bring CJ in when disaster, not of his doing, is imminent. He reacts better than being proactive.
Instead of a HR contest, why not have a pitcher’s contest that predicts how long the starter lasts, walks, hits, runs, ERA, whip, and number of pitches(B/S)……..that seems to be a hella lot harder predicting with this team……and maybe entertaining in the process…….
Jolly, Evan used to do that game while with the DMN, and now will not “let” him bring the game over here. Please correct me if I am wrong.
I think if I really wanted to, I could bring the “Cowlishaw” game with us over here. But, hey, we’re in a new spot, let’s try some new things. I just feel so fulfilled being able to hand out goodies. …. Hope you guys will play along all year!
Now if was us having to pull a pitcher in the second (would Wash consider that) would we go to Jennings…..seems to be the place to audition a potential starter…..and he has to be ahead of Feldman right now based on performance…….
@JustSaying: Right now, the bullpen is such a disaster area I don’t think the Rangers would mess with anybody having a dash of success down there. Think the idea would be to go to Feldman and see if going back to being a starter would better serve him.
Why should anyone believe that Ron Washington is a competent manager?
Can see find a good lawyer that likes baseball to……..ok, just kidding……geez, there’s nothing left there except a game and AP wire releases……
Evan, what is your opinion on Ron Washington? And do you think he’ll last the year?
Does McCarthy come out for the eighth?
@Jolly: Aren’t you getting ahead of yourself? We’re in the sixth.
@Jeffrey: After a decade of managers who played by the percentages with extreme predictability, Washington is a different type of manager. He manages more by feel. When something backfires, it makes it a lot easier to second-guess his move because it went against the percentages. Save for Sunday’s game, every move he’s made in the first week has paid off for him. So, it would appear he’s got some feel for feel (if that makes any sense).
But bottom line: A manager is only as good as his team and his record. Right now, Ron Washington’s record suggests he’s either been a below-average manager or had a below-average team. And April is critical. He’s got to have a solid start. If this month falls apart, chances are he’ll be gone before Memorial Day.
NO>>>>>>>>>NO>>>>>>>>>>NOOOOOOOOO
I really like Washington’s focus on defense and fundamentals. Those good Rangers teams from the 90s had only adequate pitching but made up for it with good hitting (as always) and steady, solid defense.
I feel like that history could repeat itself with this team (hitting and defense making up for average pitching), but the bullpen and back half of the rotation MUST improve.
And what do you know? C.J. looked good…
Ok the 7th…..he didn’t but he looked pretty good for our number 3/4?
6 innings and 3 runs should be the minimum expectation. If I were giving McCarthy a grade for this start it would be a C+. However, if the Rangers can get a C+ every game they should be OK provided they can find a bullpen.
evan,
why pull McC after 6 innings and 92 pitches? I thought we were all about going deeper now?
@Fai Mao, Andrew in Boston: Baby steps. Baby steps. Remember: McCarthy is still the only other starter than Millwood to qualify for a quality start. They expect more, but they’ve also got to accept progress for what it is.
Awesome double play!
I’m not sure I understand Wash at all…..CJ gets demoted (sorta) so McCarthy leaves after 6 and CJ is demoted from just the 8th to the 7th and 8th…….I’m just trying to follow………
@JustSaying: Sometimes it’s hard to follow. This is obviously a bullpen in distress. There are no definite roles other than closer right now. Unfortunate to be doing open casting in the regular season, but that’s the situation the Rangers are left with.
If the Rangers do decide to go with red more often than not at home, why not scrap the blue font on the unis and go back to red font/pant stripes/outlining like they had from 94-99?
@Jeffrey: Can’t physically change the uniform in the middle of a season. And there is about nine months of lag time in order to get MLB to approve a uni change. The club would likely have to commit to such a change by May to have it in effect for next year. Prolly won’t happen. … Hey, why are you asking this in the eighth inning of a tie game?
how many times is Hamilton going to swing and miss at the first pitch before he realizes that the pitchers know he does this and they don’t throw him strikes? that and a foul ball following always seem to put him in an 0-2 hole.
did you know Luke Scott went to Oklahoma State? I don’t think Josh has mentioned that enough this game.
Yes Jeffrey that’s probably what’s wrong with the bullpen……their color karma is off…..they keep thinking about not matching right…….
Anyone know the attendance tonight? Looks kinda thin.
@Evan: I’m a good multi-tasker. Plus, I read the Uni-Watch article about the new MLB teams’ unis on espn.com not too long ago and Paul Lukas hammered the new Rangers uniforms.
I heard Jim Palmer yesterday and he was pretty good at it……..
I’m predicting a 9th inning Home Run and win thus starting a new tradition of two inning closer with anything close to a tie.
@Corey: Again, with the weirdly-timed questions. It was 14,041, about 1,200 more than last night.
@JustSaying: At this point, I’ll be on board with anything the Rangers do to fix the bullpen.
I’m not saying I’m not happy with McC’s effort. I’ll take a “quality start” every game. I just don’t understand why they didn’t leave him in longer. Especially because Padilla’s outing was so short yesterday.
Weirdly-timed?
Delayed gratification…I’ve heard of that.
Here’s a relevant question: do you put the “hot” Andruw Jones in the game to pinch hit for Murphy? He could play left…maybe…
Ouch…
… again, someone out of the bullpen not named Francisco blows the game.
@Corey: I kid because I care.
@Jeffrey: They’d have to get back around to Murphy at this point. Would guess Jones would hit for Vizquel if Salty reaches base in bottom of 10th.
I think Jeffrey meant in the 9th inning rather than coming back around to Murphy.
Ya I just realized that…maybe I should think before I post.
or maybe not!
Thanks for the help Adam. And you’re right, I WAS thinking about the 9th in retrospect…
I think Washington has perfected the art of leaving his pitchers in 2 batters too long.
@Jeffrey: Sorry, Murphy had already hit when I saw your question. I certainly would have considered it. And, yeah, if the idea is to go with the “hot” bat, Jones right now would have been a worthwhile option.
enjoy the drive up to Frisco, Warner
Painful……it’s hell when you realize we just don’t have enough talent pitching……it’s hard to manage past that fact……Maybe Wash already knows that and that’s why all the moves on the fly…..
if we have such a dearth of talent in pitching at the major league level, and we’re not expecting to really compete this year anyways, what’s the harm in blooding some of the younger arms for this year so that they won’t be over-awed next year??
Alright, bottom 10th, we’re coming back to win this!
why not go with teagarden? He can’t be any worse?
I guess that’s why you leave Salty in…nice hit.
why is Vizquel hitting in this situation???
Do you pinch hit Jones for Blalock?
Why, Why do I get the impression Josh will pop out to the outfield? WHY!!!
dude, the middle of this lineup is undisciplined… get a clue
I thought Andruw Jones was kept for this pinch hit? Lefty on lefty stays in?
Ugh…
You have to tip your hat at the Orioles as they have played some great defense over this series……
I think it’s clear we need to know what CJ was tweeting about. He had a pretty decent night last night. What was the context? The color? THESE ARE THINGS WE MUST KNOW!
