The Depot: Live Game Blog, News, Notes (Vs. Royals 4/17)

The answer is: A cracked bat used to double in the first inning. The question: What did Ian Kinsler donate to the National Baseball Hall of Fame from his 6-for-6/cycle game against Baltimore the other night? So that mystery has been solved.

5:33 weather update: We are still expecting to play out here even though we’ve currently got a light shower going and the tarp is on the field. Remember, however, the Rangers have been known to entertain crowds during rain delays.

7:17: OF David Murphy has tried the extra work approach to shake himself out of his hitless start, but as the streak has now reached 13 at-bats, he’s decided to take a more laid back approach.

“I was going at it really hard last week, maybe too hard,” said Murphy, who was out of the lineup for the second consecutive game. “I think I needed to step bac a little and try to relax. I need to get in the right frame of mind. I know it’s going to come.”

Murphy’s biggest adjustment at the plate has been to try and crouch more. Last weekend at Detroit, he noticed he was standing very much straight up. When Murphy started Monday, he crouched more and felt like he was closer to breaking the slump. Murphy entered Friday as the only player in the majors to have at least 10 at-bats this season with no hits.

“I had no clue the first week,” Murphy said. “I think I’m on the right track now.”

7:25: After hearing the BaD Radio boys (or should I say my colleague Bob Sturm) debate today over which is more rare, a cycle or a no-hitter, we retained our high-powered research group to check on the totals. Since 1900, we can tell you that there have been 243 cycles and 213 no-hitters. … Also checked on six-hit games vs. no-hitters. Our crack researchers couldn’t go back farther than 1954 on six-hit games, but I don’t think it’s necessary. There have been 123 six-hit games to 52 no-hitters in the same time. So, when it gets down to it, the no-hitter is still a rarer accomplishment to see than either of Ian Kinsler’s cycle/six-hit game on Wednesday.

7:34: You watch Vladimir Guerrero walk like an old man and keep thinking “the Angels will break down.” Well, they might be. RHPs John Lackey and Ervin Santana are both on the DL and Guerrero is about to join them with a tear in his pectoral muscle. This might be the year age finally catches up with them.

7:39: Here is why it’s not a good idea to walk the No. 9 hitter with two outs: Because the leadoff guy (in this case Coco Crisp) might just hit a three run homer.

7:56: MJH cited my pal Tracy Ringolsby’s report earlier today that indicated the Rockies had placed hard-throwing reliever Juan Morillo on waivers. He suggested the Rangers might be interested, particularly because of the connections to Colorado. Won’t happen. Minnesota has claimed him.

8:04: Ian Kinsler has walked and reached on a bunt single. He now has hits in his last eight at-bats and has reached base nine consecutive times, still short of the club record held by Frank Catalanotto. He had hits in 10 straight at-bats and reached base 13 straight times due to three walks.

8:11: Matt Harrison has started four innings. Leadoff batter has reached in three of them. Good way to put yourself in immediate trouble.  Body language on mound is not encouraging. Kind of slump shouldered and sad-sacky.

8:14: The Rangers actually passed on Morillo. They could have taken him.

8:18: Red wins dot race for fifth time in seven races this season. Bet Red heavily this weekend. Call it a hunch. It’s “Red Out” Weekend. … Speaking of which, Jon Daniels appeared in press box tonight in bright red blazer. Claims sportscoat may have once belonged to Denny Crum. Yeah, and he’s driving Jon Voigt’s car, too.

9:13: Sorry for the long pause. What was I going to say? Willie Eyre gives up ANOTHER double? Eyre is not the savior for this bullpen. Nobody in the system is the savior for the bullpen. It’s more than one pitcher away right now. … By the way, the Rangers are giving away doubles this inning like it’s Happy Hour. That’s four for the Royals so far.

9:34: Jarrod Saltalamacchia has one hit in his last 25 at-bats. He’s struck out three times tonight. He’s struck out 12 times in those 25 at-bats.

9:36: Somebody is going to have to explain why Michael Young did not hit with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh and why if the Rangers were going to send up a pinch hitter it wasn’t Andruw Jones or David Murphy. I realize it’s 9-0, but that was a chance to get back into the game.

9:40: Perhaps Young is injured, but no indication of that. No problem taking Young out of the lineup – if the club doesn’t capitalize on that seventh-inning opportunity. But Young, if healthy, should hit there and then so should Josh Hamilton, if Young reaches. If they don’t, then you pull Young and Hamilton (who has now been replaced by David Murphy) and surrender the game.

9:43: Confirmation comes – Young is not hurt.

10:12: More to come. Post-Game Show is next. Game story on which we’ll probably talk a little about that strange seventh-inning pinch-hitting decision after that.

Evan: How do you expect to see Jennings used tonight?

  • jimmers

Evan, confess, tonight you will be reporting on the game from outside one of the RV’s in the Pizza Hut Park parking lot

  • Charles

For those of us not watching or listening…how in the world did Kinsler end up out on a FC after stealing 2nd and taking away the force out? Is this another boneheaded play on the basepaths?

  • Fred

    1st inning:
    1) Ya think they might want to reign in Kins’ aggressiveness on the bases, just a bit?
    2) Ya think they’ve got the book on how to start Hamilton off? Ya think he might adjust?

  • WonkoTheSane

Why does Matt Harrison refuse to throw strikes?

  • Evan Grant

@JustSaying: Depends. If the Rangers have a lead and the right-handed bottom of the order comes up, I think Jennings gets the eighth. If it’s the middle of the order, featuring lefties David DeJesus, Mark Teahen and Mike Jacobs, it will be C.J. Wilson.

  • Evan Grant

    @Jimmers: I’m at The Ballpark; I swear.

  • Evan Grant

@Charles: Kinsler broke for third on Michael Young’s ground ball to short and was thrown out by Mike Aviles. Bad baserunning? This time, no excuse. No reason for him to go on contact there.

  • alan

who is the base running coach and is he scared of teaching fundamentals to a vet like Kinsler? The guy has to get 6 hits to keep from making a bone-headed play on the bases

  • Fred

    Cruz: Manos de piedra.

  • Fred

I believe Pettis is the base running coach. He was a fantastic base stealer. But there’s something going wrong now. That’s kinda what I was trying to say earlrier.

  • Evan Grant

@Fred: Can’t hand the coaches all the blame. Both of those plays were instinct plays. Players had to make split-second decisions. Made wrong ones both time. Kinsler’s mistake far more egregious than Elvis taking two quick steps off bag on bouncer to mound. At least he stayed in run down long enough to get the other runners on base to second and third. That was essentially a push.

  • JustSaying

It really feels like the Ranger hitters are still pressing a bit……a bit overly aggressive at the plate and the basepath……Kinsler, we’ll keep picking away at him until he loses those bubbling enthusiasm errors and he’ll be unstoppable…….

  • Last of the Romohicans

I’m sure the blazer did belong to “Denny Crugm”

  • WonkoTheSane

Evan — Kinsler is the anti-Jeter in terms baseball instincts. True or false?

  • JustSaying

Harrison seems so close…..he nibbles on the edge but he gets behind 2-0 to many times tonight……Evan what is the ceiling for Harrison?

  • Clinton V.

    Los Rangers: Lanzadores de mierda

  • Last of the Romohicans

Sad.. but in that statement Lanzadores was what I had to look up a translation for.

  • Evan Grant

    @Last: That’s the Flemish spelling.

  • alan

LOVE it when Rangers pass up a chance to get a pitcher on the cheap…that makes a LOT of sense..why not try anybody who doesn’t cost much? Could the guy be a worse bet than Benson/Jennings?

  • Evan Grant

@Wonko: He makes some mistakes of exuberance, I’ll say that.

  • Evan Grant

@Just: These are often the mistakes of youth. In the past, the Rangers didn’t allow their pitchers the chance to learn and grow from them. For this team to succeed long-term, they are going to have to be willing to do that at some point. Will Harrison ever have great command? I’m not sure. But I do feel more confident the way the organization is currently structured, it will give itself a real chance to find out.

  • Phil

Why, Why, Why for over thirty years do Rangers pitchers look like scared puppies on the mound instead of rabid pit bulls?

Harrison needs to go back to the farm and try to find his cojones, and then Eyre comes in and promptly picks up where Harrison left off.

Starters or relievers, it doesn’t matter. The Rangers have NEVER developed an ace in the image of Johnson, Nolan (he didn’t develop here), Schilling, Clemens, etc. NEVER.

My grandmother has more moxie than Rangers pitchers.

  • alan

Phil is exactly right…I’m coming from San Antonio to DFW tomorrow and decided to see Rangers Sat/Sun instead of Buffet on Sat night…made the wrong decision..can’t wait to watch the pitchers give up 9 or so to the Royals instead of hanging with the Parrotheads

  • Evan Grant

@Phil, @Alan: Guys, remember: You send guys out now, you’ll never find out about them. It’s two starts for Harrison and 10 games for the year. Lot of guys go through terrible first months and recover. Not saying his starts have been encouraging, but growing is often painful.

  • Last of the Romohicans

    Kevin Brown doesn’t count?

  • Phil

Evan, I hear ya, but where’s the “want to” in Rangers like Harrison?

With guys like him, who appear to have good stuff, it’s always nibble, nibble, nibble, but teams like the Yankees, Mariners, Sox always bring up young guys who come out humming.

    Makes me freaking crazy.

  • Phil

@ LOTR: I guess Brown would be the best of the group, but he did most of his work after he was gone, and how pathetic is it that you could name one in the history of the Rangers.

I’m sure some will say Witt or Helling, but come on. I’m talking true superstar ace.

  • tunbleweed

Please tell me why pinch hit for Young? The best clutch hitter in years, with some pop in his bat and “WAAAAASH” brings in a guy because he has had six walks? Additionally, why does “WAAAASH” keep putting “SAAAAATY” in the lineup with his overpowering 140 average? The time has come for a change.

  • Tom B

The Eyre mistique has been revealed. Obviously he wasn’t prepared to be the, “Go To,” guy for going in six runs down. I can understand that lack of urgency. Can this be the same team from a couple of nights ago?
Yeah, I’m thinking J.B. sounds better for Sat. (Four here, good seats, cheap!!) Can’t give these things away. Go Figure!!

  • Mick

Kevin Brown was a mental patient until he left Texas (literally).

  • Fred

    Ugh-lie

  • Andrew Pelt

Hey, just thought I would drop a comment to tell you that your site took a little while to load… are you using a caching plugin? I don’t know if they have any chaching plugins for BlogEngine, but I know they do for WordPress and it makes my WordPress sites load A LOT faster! Maybe it was just my net though, check your webmasters tools and see what it says the load time is.
