Post-Game Show: Blue Jays 5, Rangers 2

We should probably call this the “I-35 Edition”

• David Murphy is 0-for-20. The season is about to wrap up it’s third week. Can you go into week number four without him having a hit? I don’t doubt he’ll snap out of it at some point, but how far can his confidence fall? A week or 10 days at OKC might allow him to mentally get out of the slump. And, Brandon Boggs injected some energy into this team when he came up last year.

• Taylor Teagarden had four strikeouts in fou at-bats. I’m wondering if the limited playing time is impacting his approach at the plate. He’s down to .067. But if you send him out to catch regularly, what do you do for backup catcher? Call up Max Ramirez to do the same thing Teagarden has been doing? Or go call Adam Melhuse out of his involuntary retirement?

• Holy crud. Mavs up by 26. Gotta go.

I think some time in OKC is just what Murphy needs.

  • Mike

Agreed that Murphy needs to be sent down. What about calling up Golson? Also agree that Teagarden needs everyday time at OKC and resign Melhuse.

  • Chad

Let’s just call a spade a spade and be honest with ourselves. This is a very bad baseball team. So frustrating

  • JustSaying

It’s not that the Rangers played so bad in this series but they in every game until ultimately they got outplayed by a better team……
CJ is sorta the poster boy……he’s got great stuff? he and his pitches just seem to always be in the wrong place at the wrong time……..
But we’ve already lost 4 pitchers from our opening day roster to include 3 injuries…….doesn’t that seem high? What do out of towners say about our pitching?
And where are Verne Lundquist and Murphy Martin when you need them?

  • RangersFanDepressed&Angry

You’re right Chad……maybe we should focus on the Newberg report who always has hope for the future and our system is loaded……but I still think Moses (Hicks) should not be allowed in the promised land (be forced to sell)
We seem to be 5-6 pitchers short of being competitive and maybe it might be more hopeful to focus on the minors to watch for a call up from one of our
    ober-prospects……

  • JimmyJoBubba

What I can’t get over is Andruw Jones playing first base while Hank is on the bench. That is boneheaded managing. They need to show Wash the door!

  • 21DaysOfHicksDefault

The biggest problem I see for the club is whether we are going to have to smell that horrible smell of young burning flesh as the farmhands keep getting called up this year too early in the process…….it’s really a case of an owner not willing financially or strategically to go out in the off season and acquire cheap bullpen help…….CJ cost $1.75mil? We just need to be willing to pay $4-$5 mil per arm and go get a couple each year……..

  • MarkCubanAsOwner

As I watched how classy Carlisle was in his post game conference I just imagined (or dreamed)what it would be like with Mark Cuban as owner……..I gotta stop doing that or it’s possible I could just go complete wacky………

  • Mike E

I don’t think you could have moved Blalock to 1st without burning the DH slot. It had to be Jones or someone else off the bench.

  • foam finger

    I miss Brandon.

  • David L

Thanks Mike E for pointing that out. you can let Hank play first in that situation if you want Jason Jennings possibly getting his first plate appearance in however many years.

  • Chris

Want a catching solution? Manny Pina. Simple.

  • Tom B

When the total of the Batting Average figures of Six of your starters do not add up to the other Three in your starting lineup then there may be a problem. A guy has to hit his weight to stay viable. If I could spell Pathetic then I would tell you what this is….Not to be redundant.

  • Fred

Lots of short memories around here.
    1) let Murphy hit his way out of slump. To do that, has to play more than one game in a row. Although no hits tonight, approach looked better. If was 0-20 (or whatever he is now) in July, you’d hardly notice.
    2) Teagarden’s a bit more of a concern, but he’s only playing once a week, and that’s tough for a guy who’s marginal with the bat, anyway. Those who thought last fall was real hadn’t looked at his history. Very up and down, with little success at upper minor levels. However, he’s a great “D” catcher, and hasn’t really had a shot at getting it together this year. Also, it’s not exactly like Salty is compensating for his defensive short comings (although I think he is much improved behind the plate) with a big bat, either.
Give them both at least 50 AB, with at least 10 in a row and stop the knee jerk executions.

Teagarden has got to be given more opportunities to hit big league pitching on a more consistent basis. In Suprise, he started slowly, no doubt getting his rhythm going. Just when his timing was improving towards the end of spring training, his average was up, his power was up, Wash sat him on the bench; permanently for all practical purposes. Hitting requires timing and timing requires more regular playing time. I supsect that is true for anyone, but it is certainly true for anyone just getting their feet wet in the bigs.

I’m sure he is frustrated with his performance, but sitting him out for the next 5 games, then throwing him back in will not help his offensive timing. We were lead to believe (by EG and others) that this would be a 60/40 deal and it is an 80/20 deal so far. If this is really an 80/20 situation, TRs should have kept Melhuse and left Teagarden in AAA hitting daily.

  • Fred

    Evan-
A lot of comments on the Depot last night, despite competition from the Mav’s during last 3-4 innings.
Assume the hit-meter did well too. Stick with me!

  • Chris

    Manny Pina.

  • Coach

Why is everyone so high on Murphy. He’s never really done anything in professional baseball to give us any confidence that he can play. He had a decent year last year, but I’m afraid it was a fluke. Plus, his OBP sucked……….send him to the minors and play Byrd / Jones everyday. If Murph hits in the minors, then you might have something……….but the prediction here is you don’t.

Teagarden: He can play! He’ll be ok!
