The Depot: Live Game Blog, Observations, Chat

Well, you wanted me, you got me. I’ve currently got the TV tuned to Tyler Perry’s House of Payne (but with the sound off as their is some Richard Simmons-type dude doing his shtick). I’ve got Campisi’s number right here and will order a pizza. We’ll have a grand ol’ time as we watch the Rangers and Blue Jays.

If you got questions, ask ‘em. If you got comments, make ‘em. I’ll be taking occasional mid-inning breaks to pack for tomorrow’s early morning flight to Balmer. For those wondering about selling Kason Gabbard to the Red Sox, I’ve been told he continued to struggle with fastball command at Oklahoma City, did not respond well to the relief role and there were long-term injury concerns. RHP Bryan Corey has been assigned there to replace him.

Here we go, remember to refresh to catch more of the pithy commentary as it develops.

6:12: Josh Hamilton works count to 3-and-1 (then full) before lining out to Alex Rios. It’s another out (he has one hit in last 17 at-bats), but it’s a far better at-bat than he’s had lately. Did not swing at first pitch. Got into hitters count. Maybe the off night did him some good.

6:24: Top priority for Friday – Have stern conversation with Chris Davis. Ask him what is going on with his face. I thought I’d seen it all when Tommy Hunter unveiled a Wolverine-type beard earlier this week at Frisco.

6:38: Interesting observation on Lyle Overbay’s homer. Kevin Millwood had thrown the same fastball in the same location (outer half of the plate) as the second pitch of the at-bat. Overbay had taken for a strike. Seven pitches later, he’s seen Millwood go away and then go up and when he comes back to the lower outer half, Overbay drives it over the center field wall. You could say that’s one of the benefits of long at-bats. You see the same pitch in the same location.

6:40: See, it’s the top of the third and Lewin is already into the Monty Python humor. It’s not needed at this point. Just a little over the top sometimes. (For those too young too remember Holy Grail or who didn’t see Spamalot: that’s where the air-speed joke comes from.

6:57: The sequence of Josh Hamilton’s home run at-bat: Takes changeup for a ball, takes fastball for a ball, fouls off fastball and then homers the opposite way. Put himself in a favorable count for the second consecutive at-bat. If he does that, he’s going to once again get hot.

7:01: I’ve got to do a radio show in Chicago at 8 p.m. to discuss Milton Bradley. It’s a five minute segment. How am I going to explain him?

7:02: Chris Davis up with runner on third and one out. Must. Get. Him. Home. Period. Fly ball here.

7:04: Grieve calls the Chris Richmond’s breaking ball to Davis a curve. Three straight. Three straight swings and misses. Bad at-bat. These are the situational approaches that Bob Sturm was talking to MJH and I in this a.m.’s pseudo-chat.  So it sticks out more.

7:22: Great fielding play by Davis to go up and get Elvis Andrus’ throw on Rod Barajas to end the fourth. But I’m not sure if Davis landed badly on his ankle or jammed his knee when he came down on the artificial turf. Let’s assume the worst for one second, just for the sake of an exercise. How would you replace Davis on the roster if he was to miss two weeks or so? I’ll give you my answer shortly.

7:40: So, Kevin Millwood doesn’t have great stuff tonight. So, he’s given up four runs in five innings. OK, here’s the chance for him to prove leadership. He’s still gotta tough it out and get through seven tonight. If he does, I’ll bet he gets the win. But he’s at 90 pitches right now, pitching for the first time on four days rest. Unless he’s very efficient in the sixth, I don’t think he’s going to pitch the seventh. I think there was a far better way to phrase that, but, hey, I gotta get this stuff done between innings.

7:48: David Murphy walks in consecutive at-bats. Maybe the last time the Jays were pitching around him to get to Taylor Teagarden, but the second time around, I’m going to give Murphy credit for seeing the ball better. He needs to. Even if he’s making progress, this 0fer can’t continue. If he doesn’t start piling up some hits this weekend, I really think the team needs to consider letting him go to OKC for a bit, even if its just 10 days. The guy doesn’t have a hit. The season began on April 6. It’s now April 23. Think what that does to confidence.

7:58: Millwood’s at 104 pitches after 14-pitch sixth. Send him out for seventh?

8:16: Got to say that Millwood gets credit from me tonight for making it through seven. And I give the Rangers management credit for showing the conviction to stick with him. It’s one thing to leave a guy out there when he’s dealing; it’s another thing entirely to show faith when he’s given up four runs but kept you in the game. I said it earlier today and I’ll reiterate tonight: Ron Washington, in my mind, has done a very good job of handling the pitching staff lately.

8:41: The run in the eighth hurt. I have no issues with Elvis Andrus having five errors at this point in the season, but a number of them have come late in games. Not sure if he’s speeding things up in his mind when the game is on the line or not. But it’s something he’ll have to address during his rookie season.

8:46: Golden sombrero for Taylor Teagarden. Four at-bats, four punch outs. Rough night. Well, that’s it. We’ll move this over to the Post-Game Show while I go pack for what appears to be a rather balmy Balmer weekend.

Evan, just wondering, do you enjoy the on air duo of TAG and Josh? I personally get a chuckle out of them. But my baseball brain isn’t as big as yours or most of the people who comment.

  • Evan Grant

@Becca: Personally, I would listen to Eric Nadel every night of the week, every day of the year. But that’s because I love his work and because I like listening to baseball on the radio. Josh can be very entertaining, but I think sometimes he tries too hard to fit material in. I think that inhibits Grieve on occasion. The games I’ve listened to Grieve work with Steve Busby, he seems to be much more engaged and there is much more baseball analysis. … I do have Josh and Tom on tonight. Radio delay with satellite dish is not acceptable.

  • Dr Pepper presents Batface McGee

I like the tv team and LOVE Nadel, but man, I have been so disappointed with Dave Barnet. He seems VERY late on all his calls, so much so that it seems that I hear the crowd react before he tells me what is going on. Am I out of my mind on this?

  • Mike E

    Hey Evan,
Do you think the Rangers will try to pick up Vizcaino, who was just designated for assignment by the Cubs?

  • Fred

    Thanks for hearing us, Evan.

  • obagain

After thinking about oday last night the BP had a chance to pull a perfect prank on washington.
What if they had put a ball boy in gabbards uni, how long before someone figured out it wasnt oday?

  • Becca

i feel like he’s channeling the C.H.I.P. boys.

  • Evan Grant

    @Fred: Thanks for your input.

@Obagain: Too much time on your hands.

@DPPBM: Couple of things on Dave Barnett. His voice is outstanding. He works very hard on preparation. And he and Nadel are working together for the first time. It does take some time for chemistry and all that to develop. I’ve only listened to about four innings on the radio, but haven’t heard any of the issues you bring up. I think as time marches on, you will very much LOVE the team Nadel-Barnett team.

  • Fred

Not only Davis’ facial hair, but his pants/socks have gone up and down a couple of times in the last week. He truly is lost!

  • Evan Grant

@Fred: Yes, I am the man to give both grooming and clothing advice!

  • Becca

i might have missed it, but what is the HK on Millwood’s hat for?

  • Becca

    cap. it’s a cap.

  • Evan Grant

@Becca: Believe it’s for former Philadelphia broadcaster Harry Kalas. Millwood, according to Josh Lewin, and Kalas were close during Millwood’s time in Philadelphia.

  • Tippetts_Stache

That is one sweet ’stache Chris is growing.

  • Last of the Romohicans

So… I was listening to some tunes on the way home, and it struck me with an idea – and I know it’s idea day on the blog…

So in honor of Jerry Cantrell’s great solo-effort in the post AiC days – I think when you’re NOT on the road the Depot should be called “Bloggy Depot” – just because it sounds cool.

  • Last of the Romohicans

That’s a better indicator than getting into a hitters count.

  • Tippetts_Stache

Lewin (Raptor-Neck) doesn’t really seem like he forces a lot, just seems to me like he is “that guy”. I seriously doubt he even knows that he is doing it.

  • Last of the Romohicans

The inventor of some really good games, who’s legacy shall always be Hungry Hungry Hippos?

  • Dr. Pepper presents Batface McGee

    Ugly, ugly ab by Davis.

  • Last of the Romohicans

I think that inning is a great example of the difference between playoffs and 82 wins. You GOTTA score there… period.

  • Becca

the walk was smart to get to Teagarden. Intentional or not. I wish he’d hit his stride but I guess it’s hard when you’re only playing 1 in 5ish games…

  • Tippetts_Stache

Question for anyone, who caught Millwood’s other games?

  • Fred

Watching Toronto feed. they called the pitches to Davis curves, too. Sure looked like it. Big break. Time for him to shave go to Kinsler socks again.

  • Evan Grant

@Fred: I just can’t tell the difference between the slider and the curve, but Grieve has mentioned both pitches. I’m guessing he’s throwing the slider away from right-handers and the curve in to lefties.

  • Evan Grant

@Tippetts_Stache: First, I think you need an apostrophe in there. Second, Salty caught each of the first three Millwood starts.

  • Doug Fu

Great play by Elvis to end the inning, but he needs to settle down on his throws. Great play by Davis to snag it and get the out.

  • Tippett's Stache

@Evan: Fine, fine, I was being lazy (noticed that earlier), I can probably get rid of the underscore, as well. Should be interesting to see how pitchers react to the different catchers this season.

  • Dr Pepper presents Batface McGee

EG, I was going to post this on the “suggestions” thread, but thought I would do it here instead. What about a “Watch a game with the great Evan Grant” promotion? Whoever wins the prize along with 3 of their friends gets to meet up with you at a restaurant of your (or Dr. Peppers’) choice to watch a game. I know I would be interested.

I’m just thinking out loud here…

  • Doug Fu

    Would it be Justin Smoak?

  • Becca

didn’t murphy play 1st some during spring training? wait that was metcalf. i say make blalock earn his check.

  • Corey

    Found this earlier today….

Top 10 Hitters With Most Swing & Misses for season to date 2009.

    Player Swing/Miss
    Josh Hamilton 46
    Chris Davis 44
    Ryan Howard 39
    Jordan Schafer 39
    Adrian Gonzalez 38
    David Ortiz 37
    Nelson Cruz 36
    Matt Kemp 36
    Carlos Pena 36
    Corey Hart 34

  • Last of the Romohicans

Hurry! Someone’s trying to steal Tippetts_Stache’s name!

…I put Hank at 1st, Andruw at 2nd and get another warm body for the pen since Harrison/Padilla combine for one start every time through the rotation.

  • Connor

Evan, I’m almost sad to hear you speak any bad about Lewin. He is entertaining, but I think he makes a point NOT to force material..he does sometimes because there is only so much to talk about in a long summer of slow and lengthy innings. And I’m afraid if he stuck purely to the rangers and their bullpen woes, it would depress us too much.

What do you think of Tom? You didn’t say much about him. I personally enjoy his perspective but I was wondering how you felt..

  • Becca

    @corey – We’re number 1! We’re number 1!

  • Last of the Romohicans

    **Meant Jones at DH

  • Corey

    @becca – And number 2 and number 7…

  • Becca

    conner i meant.

    ok. done typing.

  • Becca

nope. it was corey. for real. done.

  • Tippett's 'stache

I think this is even MORE correct. :)

I’m sitting here watching this game, and all I can think about is how much I want to see Holland pitch again. I don’t know which batter it was last night, but I just remember Holland throwing a 95 MPH fastball then a … 60 MPH slider I believe, and making the batter look like a fool.

  • Evan Grant

@DPPM: We have that exact promotion, but even better. All people have to do is take a photo of themselves enjoying a Dr Pepper at a sporting event (and it could be Air Hockey) and upload it on the Dr Pepper SportsSnaps promo on our page and you could win a Family Four Pack to Watch the Rangers with Me. Watch BP from the field. Other goodies involved, too. Easy, free way to support the sponsors and get free stuff for you, too. …. But maybe we could occasionally take the live blogging thing to a restaurant or adult watering hole and do a road game from there. I know the Old Monk appears to be the official sponsor of all D Corporate outings. And they have yummy sliders to go with all those beers.

  • Fred

Evan-Toronto announcers said he had “put the curve in his back pocket” this game, until they threw 3 to Davis. Credited Barajas for changing up the calls.

  • Charles

I’m obviously not Evan, but I don’t think he was speaking bad of Lewin per se, just pointing out the obvious. I like Lewin a lot, sure he’s no Mark Holtz (who is though?), but he’s good at his job. Ultimately, I think, like someone else said, he’s just that guy. He tries to entertain us, but there’s a baseball game for that. He doesn’t need to be funny or have a schtick, the baseball game can speak for itself. At the same time, I do realize that baseball — unless you’re at the game — is fairly boring for the average person, and he’s trying to get those guys into the game. Kind of like Humble Billy is to the Mavs. They place a premium on fan experience, but for those of us who are “for the love of the game”, it’s over the top. Anyhow, sorry to speak for you Evan, but hopefully that made some sense.

As for Bradley, you should just talk about his passion for the game. He’s a passionate guy, and that can influence his actions, for better or worse.

  • Doug Fu

@Evan: I would be all about taking the live blogging thing to a watering hole. That’s an outstanding idea.

  • Evan Grant

@Doug Fu: OK, now all we gotta do is find a sponsor. But, I’ll be bringing this up to the bosses. … Might be fun. As long as nobody pours a Stella on my computer.

  • Ted Price

Evan – replace a hurt Davis my moving Cruz to 1st, move Josh over to right and call up Borbon. I admit, I just want to see Borbon with the big club.

  • Doug Fu

@Evan: You have my assurances that no Lone Star Light will make it onto your computer.

  • Tippett's 'stache

SEE THE POWER OF THE ‘STACHE!

  • Ted Price

But as we can see, Davis is not hurt – so it’s all moot.

  • Evan Grant

@Ted Price: I was just wondering if anybody would have brought Frank Catalanotto’s name into the conversation. He’s still unemployed. Feel bad for the guy. He was the first thought that popped in my mind because THERE IS NO WAY I’M ADDING SMOAK TO THE 40-MAN ROSTER!

  • Ted Price

Why does the woman use air quotes when she says “accident forgiveness?” Makes me think something’s fishy.

  • Ted Price

@Evan – Smoak needs more time to simmer

  • Doug Fu

I’d just like to say someone had commandeered my computer when Justin Smoak’s name was previously brought up.

  • Becca

evan, if the d mag guys come to your adult beverage watering hole for live blogging with chumps like us, will we get in trouble if we comment in their presence?

and bringing cat in is a great idea. i like the guy.

  • Dr Pepper presents Batface McGee

@ Ted Price – Because air quotes are like cow bell; we could all use a little more.

  • Tippett's 'stache

I’m still surprised that Cat hasn’t been picked up by an NL team. I don’t have any numbers to back me up, but he always seemed like he did well when he was called on to pinch hit.

  • Becca

if we were ahead, i’d think they’d send him out. but is anyone warming up yet? i miss a lot of things on the tv.

  • Doug Fu

Why the heck not. Give him a couple of batters and see how he does.

  • Evan Grant

@Tippet’s ’stache: Cat has the second highest batting average of any “active” pinch hitter. I use quotes because I guess, technically, Cat’s not active right now.

@Becca: I’ll have to check on the live commenting policy. But you know, we always allow comments at The Corner.

  • Evan Grant

By the way, Corey’s stat about swings and misses from earlier is very interesting. Not sure what it means, except that maybe some Rangers don’t have quite the strike-zone judgment they thought they had.

  • Tippett's 'stache

I want to say something about Hamilton switching back to his toe-tap-swing, but not exactly sure what I want to say. Something about switching back to what he is comfortable with and has been successful with? Or perhaps his new swing did the opposite of it’s intention somehow (giving him more time to watch the ball before he started with his mechanics). Granted this is a very small sample size, but still, thoughts?

  • dwc

Evan: I have Dish and the way I make sure I can listen to Eric is by listening to the game through mlb.com. There is a delay on the computer that is approximately the same as the one on the satellite. So it works out.

  • Ted Price

@’Stache – it has the be a comfort issue. He just started this new swing a few months ago. It was done to simplify his mechanics to cut down on fatigue and injuries late in the season. I would think once the confidence is back, you’ll see him tinker with it some more. Might be a little at a time rather than wholesale changes. But as we see so often, an 0 for 3 can become an 0 for 12 so fast. So you do what you can to break that slump.

  • Corey

Have another interesting stat for you. On the 3-1 pitch Josh Hamilton is batting .611 when he puts the ball into play. Amazing!

This was part of an analysis of almost 1.7 million pitches from 2000-2008 and is a good read on pitch counts and when if favors the batter/pitcher.

Not sure if I am allowed to put a link in here so let me know if I broke a rule, but it is really an excellent read.

  • nycarl

Evan, is there any way to find out the projected starters for OKC when they’re in Round Rock in mid- May? I’d love to See Feliz pitch, and it’s a beautiful stadium with a $12 maximum ticket price (take that, Frisco!). There are a couple seats still available 10 rows behind the plate and I’d love to grab them. Thanks.

  • Evan Grant

@nycarl: You’ll have to email me or get on the blog closer to the date. Can’t really project the rotation this far out. So much could happen. But, hey, grab the tix and go. If you don’t get Feliz, you can get up close and personal with Ted Price favorite Julio Borbon!

  • Mike E

Did Jones stay in the game to play 1st?

  • Tippett's 'stache

    @Mike: Yes.

Bad game for Elvis tonight, probably not the only one we’ll see this season either as he plays through some growing pains (show me that smile again).

Yes, I stretched to get the reference, sue me.

  • Ted Price

@’Stache – I do a podcast with two lawyers, so be careful with your proclamations!

  • Tippett's 'stache

@Ted: Hahaha, surely Alan Thicke and the gang would just be happy with being relevant again?

  • I'm With Incaviglia

couldn’t tell if Andruw had a play on Elvis’ high throw…it looked like he was dodging the runner and brought his glove down…was there any chance he could have made a play on that ball? and is this his first ever appearance at 1B?

  • Evan Grant

@EVERYBODY: Love the way you guys are answering questions for one another. What a nice community we have here. Good work people.

  • Ted Price

@Inky – yes, this is Jones’ first time at first. At least that’s according to Josh and TAG, and who am I to argue?

  • Doug Fu

What is that, two runs the Rangers have scored in Millwood’s last two starts?

He’s pitched well but just hasn’t had the support to back him up.

  • Ted Price

@Evan – are you going to do a running commentary on “The Transporter” now?

  • Becca

which i think is wild, doug. i mean, sheesh aren’t we leading the league in homers and doubles…. when the pitching’s great, we can’t get behind it… but even when the bats are on, pitching is take a day off. it’s got to balance out eventually. not to sound negative, but that’s the exact same thing i thought last year. no worries. i have hope!

  • Doug Fu

@Becca: I agree. To me, it stings just a little bit more because to me when a Rangers’ starter goes 7 and gives up just 4 runs, it’s a game the Rangers should/have to win.

Oh well, like you said, hopefully it balances out.

  • Jolly

I almost always get the visiting feed on my cable……..
    1. Number one team in AL so far has to be Baltimore…..worst broadcast is the Rangers because it seems they never focus on the nuances or strategy of the game and I don’t need to see which group drove the farthest and who the bus driver is……..
    2. Number one team in NL is San Francisco….they teach you the game and they do it without sounding arrogant…and they do it despite a team that can’t hit anything…….lot a class in their broadcast….

  • tunbleweed

Can not take any more of “Josh L” he just runs off at the mouth without saying anything that has to do with the game. He thinks he has to one-up any comment from TAG. Please take the lap top away from him so we will not have to listen to all his comments that he reads from the screen.

  • tylerJ

tunbleweed- AMEN Lewin has driven me and mine off the TV more than once. It’s TV, we can see, he doesn’t have to fill the air with all his drivel. GO Tom, someone who knows baseball. I don’t want to be “entertained” I want to be informed with intelligent comments.

  • Tom B

Don’t we need a SEAMHEAD Creed? You know, something that describes our dedication to Diamonds that do not glisten (Are there any other kind?) Something like: A true SEAMHEAD will endure all obstacles, listen to several radios with A.M. at all angles and positions, watch multiple TVs and monitor several computers or websites to gather every score, K and BB. He will keep a running total in his head of what every hit means to both Average and Pitcher’s ERA. He will miss meals (But not many,) delay a trip to the fridge or sit in Bleacher seats to watch a game. He will call his friends, post his blog, find appropriate and inappropriate Gee-Whiz information about relevant baseball teams, players and games. He will share all rumors and make up some based on probablilty that only another SEAMHEAD can possibly follow. He will NEVER Desert his Post. A True SEAMHEAD is DIEHARD horsehide with stitches in his forehead where he once played 3rd base for an inning and tried charging line drives. He no longer plays but remembers vividly every nuance of Diamond lore. He will be buried with Deleware River Mud rubbed into his face. He will never forget the day he went 3 for 3 in Little League and is sure somehow that is relevant in the world of Major League baseball. He still has his first baseball card collection.
