BALTIMORE – Taylor Teagarden has struck out in seven consecutive at-bats, one shy of the Rangers’ record. All seven have come on breaking pitches. Teagarden knows that until he proves he can hit the pitch, he’ll keep getting more of them.
“I ask myself why it’s happening, but the simple answer is that it’s about timing,” Teagarden said. “I’ve been latea in getting my swing started, and because of it, I haven’t done a good job of recognizing pitches until its too late. A good pitcher is going to continue to exploit that until I prove I can make adjustments.”
Teagarden, who is 1-for-15, has started just four games this season. He struck out in all four at-bats Thursday and in his three at-bats against Kansas City on April 19. He last made contact on April 13 and got his only hit on April 9. Teagarden said his lack of playing time may not be helping him break the slump, but it’s not the reason for it.
“This is my role and I’m just going to have to adjust to it,” he said. “I know I’m not going to play five days a week. Playing time is not the reason I’m struggling. I am doing my best to pick up things. Andruw [Jones] and I have spent a lot of time on the bench talking about how to make the adjustment to more limited playing time. For me, it’s still about timing. Once it clicks, it clicks. But it hasn’t clicked yet.”
6:00: RHP Kevin Millwood has had an “HK” inked on the corner of the skull of his baseball cap for late Phillies announcer Harry Kalas, who passed away earlier this month. The two had a close relationship in Philadelphia when Millwood pitched there in 2003-04. But don’t expect to see the tribute when Millwood takes the mound for his next start Tuesday against Oakland. MLB sent him word Friday that it violatedthe league’s uniform policy.
6:08: Couple of quick minor league notes. RHP Jared Hyatt has been sent to Oklahoma City to replace RHP Luis Mendoza. LHP Joe Torres has been sent from extended spring training to Frisco to replace Hyatt. … OF Ben Harrison has been activated from the DL at Oklahoma City. He replaces OF Brandon Boggs, who has gone on the bereavement list following a death in his family.
6:12: I am looking at Darren O’Day’s bio and this just jumped out at me: Not only does he have a college degree; it’s in animal biology. Now, that’s interesting. Also, looking these things up keeps you from watching the Rangers strike out twice in the first inning to run the season total to 136. Yes, it is the worst in the majors.
6:19: Good news for Rangers. RHP Vicente Padilla’s velocity seems to be back up in the “normal” range. It’s been 91-95 mph here in the first. And most importantly, he’s been willing to throw it.
6:30: SS Elvis Andrus just handled his first play of the game without issue. Thursday, Andrus made three poor throws. 1B Chris Davis saved an out on one, but the other two went down as errors. Andrus has five errors this season and four of them are throwing errors. Manager Ron Washington said he wasn’t concerned about the throwing. He thought Andrus had “pushed” a couple of throws, but saw no reason to address anything with Andrus. As I was typing this, Andrus finished off the second with another perfect throw to first.
6:43: Shutdown-inning talk. OK, the Rangers gave Padilla a lead on Ian Kinsler’s single (which broke an 0-for-11 stretch). In his last two starts, the Rangers gave Padilla a lead on three different occasions. He has not maintained said lead even through the next half inning.
7:19: Vicente Padilla balked in the third run of the fourth inning. We’re pretty much left to guess how he balked. I’ve been told he seemed to disengage from the rubber with the wrong foot and then moved his entire body before being completely off. Best guess from a baseball mind far more educated than mine.
7:28: From Inside Corner’s East Texas Bureau, we’ve been sent the picture you see to the left. We’ve been told that the Orioles were playing with the Cardinals and/or the Blue Jays in Frankston. We also have too much time on our hands pondering what in the world is going on with Vicente Padilla, who just surrendered Brian Roberts’ first homer of the season.
7:38: The Rangers enter the sixth inning with five strikeouts by hitters tonight. They will not break the club record for strikeouts by the end of April (199 in 2003). But that team played 27 games by April 30 and averaged 7.37 strikeouts per game; counting this game as complete, the Rangers are averaging 8.69 strikeouts per game. No way around it: That’s awful.
7:54: Good news for Rangers: Hank Blalock’s homer to lead off seventh brings Rangers within 4-2; Bad news for Cornerites: No winners in Home Run pool. Only one entrant picked Blalock at all and that was for a fourth inning solo blast.
8:31: Chris Davis will face lefty George Sherrill. Last night, in same situation, Andruw Jones came to the plate. Hard to figure the difference in thinking tonight. Jones did strike out on three pitches. Davis just missed first pitch by three feet.
8:35: From my point of view, the ability to DH or pinch hit Jones against a lefty is the EXACT reason he made the roster in the first place. If not used in that situation, what is his role?
8:42: Over the last two innings, the Rangers have sent the tying or go-ahead run to the plate seven times. And yet they have not tied the game. Once again, this is a team that has started the season playing for the homer and disregarding almost every other aspect of the offensive game.
8:58: Holy Frijole! Michael Young has done it again. His two-run homer with two outs in ninth gives Rangers lead. If you are counting at home, that’s three homers in the last five games that have either tied the game or given the Rangers the lead in the ninth.
thanks for the follow-up on Millwood’s HK
ok, WHY does padilla hit/almost hit SO MANY batters? is it truly a control issue? it just seems way to common to be one. he seems to do it lots when he’s getting beat or isn’t throwing what he wants…but even when he’s on, like tonight, it’s always seems like a liability. i really like padilla a lot. i just worry. didn’t he get fined last year for it, too?
ok, i get the getting close to a guy to move them off the plate, or retaliating after the other pitcher does it. but those don’t seem to be the issues with paddila. is he just a hot head?
ok, I’ve finally had it with the TimeWarner/FSW issue…has anyone attempted to organize a “call/email” campaign to Time Warner (particularly in the Austin/San Antonio markets)?
Follow up question..Are all Ranger games on Dish or Direct TV?
thanks
@Alan: All I can offer at this point is an email address for FOX SW that can maybe get you further information on where to go. That address again: viewerinfo@foxsports.net. ..
@ alan – I’m on Dish, and I had one issue early this season that took about 10 minutes to fix, but I’ve gotten every game, except for any that are blacked out due to FOX National broadcast(very, very, very rare…like unicorn rare…) for the last 5 years or so. I’m certain that DirecTV people will tell you the same thing.
Same for DirecTV. I also have the Baseball package. Best thing ever and only about $1/day.
can anybody explain that balk to me i didnt really see what happened? i know there are certain things you cant do on the mound but balks just really confuses me sometimes
thanks for the input…Evan, fyi, I’ve sent several emails to the address you provided and gotten no response..it’s like nobody cares about this issue
As between Dish and DirectTV, any preference which is better or are the essentially the same product?
DirecTV.
Better sports selection and vastly, vastly superior HD selection.
I only have Dish because it’s free…but in fairness, Dish has superior DVR funtionality and usage.
Evan –
Is there any way (barring injury, alien abduction or demotion) Chris Davis doesn’t strike out 200 times this season?
I agree with ManU. DTV is better but the DVRs do suck. I believe they will have a new DVR out that is made by Tivo soon.
Orioles announcer just said Roberts was 11-18 against Padilla…..
ManUFan…what do you mean “Dish is free”?
The balk seems to be the most subjective call in baseball. Let’s get rid of it.
*sigh*
No a balk reminds us all that no matter what happens it doesn’t happen until the umpire says it happens……
@DallasManUFan: Davis is averaging a strikeout every two at-bats and if he stays anywhere around that and plays full-time, he’s looking at a 250-plus strikeout season. But let’s just be clear only once has a batter had more than 200 strikeouts in a season (Arizona’s Mark Reynolds last year). He’s on a terrible pace, but there have been others to have this kind of start. … And I can’t believe you used “functionality and usage” on my blog. What is this techno-talk?
well, at least he didn’t hit anybody with a pitch? so much for his fast ball looking better tonight.
Anyone remember the last time an actual grand slam was hit during the Sonic grand slam inning?
IMO opinion even if the pitching got a lot better right now, this team is striking out WAY too often to beat anybody..what in the world is going on with the bats?
last season i think.
@ Evan – I’m using all of my big words before the beer kicks in and I’m forced to start working monosyllabically.
teagarden too. who would have thunk it?
Evan: You should go out to center field and get some Boog Powell BBQ……that will make you feel better after all those strikeouts…..after that you’ll only need a dozen blue crabs…..
@Becca: Really? Man, I really have no memory left. Too many dead brain cells.
i’m not 100% on that, though
Another disappointing April…….
Hey, who put on the Padilla jersey?
but i know there was a huge one last year. i’ll get my internet searching brain on in a minute. have to finish beer first. (i’m inspired by dallasmanu)
ok. sept 16. and it was teagarden.
@Becca: Thanks – You would think important info. like that would stick.
i just remember thinking MAN i always forget to enter those things. and to be fair, it may have been the 15th. but it was sept…you get the idea.
didn’t padilla lead the league in balks last year?
I was thinking the same thing ernie. He sure balks and hits batters quite a bit.
As for TV coverage, I have MLB TV so problem solved. Then again, I don’t live in the Rangers coverage area so I’m not blacked out
Anyone had that Frito pie wrap at Sonic? Definitely a guilty pleasure (but not that guilty).
Wouldn’t this have been a good opportunity to pinch hit Andruw Jones for Elvis Andrus?
is it anything like that frito burrito at taco bell? because that’s pretty special.
also, evan, it seems like we’ve been leaving a lot of guys on base so far this season. are we around normal or does it just seem like anexcruiating amount to me becuase it kills me when we do it?
you have GOT to be kidding me. did padilla really just do that? sheesh. i spoke too soon earlier.
so we bring in guardado as LOOGY and he walks the batter on 4 pitches? Wonderful
Nadel just said that O’Day was making his Rangers debut…maybe he means his debut while wearing the correct uniform
I think Eddie might be done. Time to retire maybe? He has looked awful so far.
bigskinny I like that idea…..get that intidimating butt off the bench…..
Get up Andruw!!!!!!
Tyler..probably too much to ask that we could trade Eddie again, huh
and btw, what happened to Evan? has he turned the prison over to us inmates?
This is ugly…..
maybe he shaved the mustache a little too early.
Mother of God! ! !
Wasn’t that the time to put in Andruw Jones? Instead Wash leaves in a slumping hitter, who isn’t making contact…what, was Murphy too busy? He may have been the only worse option.
UN-FREAKING-REAL.
ok, i hate to say it, but the only way things could have gotten worse was bringing cj in. and lookie here
Evan: Why o why do they take a risk on Jones and then after he delivers they don’t use him in a prototypical situation? What am I missing?
but i hope i’m wrong.
@Becca – I’m really starting to like you…
Not to defend Wash’s decision to not pinch hit for Davis, but he (Davis) saw the same pitch over and over again in very nearly the exact spot. He says all the right things, but he has to know he’s getting offspeed stuff, and he has to know since he has been striking out (alot) he’s not going to get anything around the plate. He should have just kept his bat on his shoulder the whole time and walked.
Amen on Andrew Jones. Developing Davis is fine, but this is a winnable game in a season that the West is winnable even for this crew of Rangers. As Evan said, Jones should have hit for Davis.
Agreed Charles. Did you see the pitch tracker on those? Extreme bottom right corner, nowhere near a strike. Very bad move to not pinch hit with Jones…
Nice grab by Andrus! wow
whew. that was close. good fielding.
LOL LOL LOL
That Andrus play almost makes me want to cry…….
“8:42: Over the last two innings, the Rangers have sent the tying or go-ahead run to the plate seven times. And yet they have not tied the game. Once again, this is a team that has started the season playing for the homer and disregarding almost every other aspect of the offensive game.”
Just think how terrible they’d be if they didn’t have Rudy-the-all-knowing-”hitting”-coach there…
i was just thinking that. have they always been like that? i mean in the past few seasons? or is it just seemingly so much more apparent now? (and i’m not spell checking because it’s baseball time)
The good news is that Wash’s use of his bench should insure that he doesn’t survive another week…we need a different perspective and we need it now to have any credibility
Assuming Sherrill gets these last two outs to secure the Baltimore win, it will make 7 losses in 9 Ranger games that have been decided by one or two runs.
1) He was saving Jones for extra innings. Huh???
2) Manufacturing runs is a huge, huge weakness for this team, and for Washington (altho I recall it was supposed to be a strength after he was hired).
3) If you K, you don’t move runners up or score them from 3rd.
What’s so hard about that, guys?
fantastic!
My jaw is on the floor after watching what Michael Young just did… Seriously… Craziness!
Assuming Michael hits a 2-run home run and the Rangers hold the lead in the bottom of the ninth, it will make 6 losses in 9 Ranger games decided by one or two runs.
Booyah!
So, uh, is it okay to be a Michael Young fan again?
Michael Young deserves all the kudos he gets but he’s absolutely carrying this team all by himself…the other weaknesses cannot be overlooked, including the manager’s idiocy
Wow MY! That’s why you’re the face of the franchise…..and Ian you’re not so bad either……
if we pull this out, and i have faith in frankie, i’m jamming out to axel f and finding a dr pepper that with and will be sorely disappointed if i don’t win evan’s contest!
Hey, here’s a big question, how valuable do you say Elvis’ play to save a run prior to the top of the ninth is?
Not to mention Byrd’s hustle to get the second out in the bottom of the 9th…
Very very very nice finish.
stinking typing. evan, just wait, there’s gonna be a great photo entry for your dr pepper context!
Michael, you make me feel young. So glad I am not the only one reading a baseball blog on Friday night. Go Rangers.
Great job MY and gutsy win despite shaky bullpen action again. Night folks!
dic I think your point shows just how important a couple of off season bullpen arms under $10 mil total could really be paying big dividends right now….
Grumpy, thanks for using my pictures. The Baltimore Orioles were migrating through East Texas today. Any prediction on where they will land? Buh-bye, birdie.
