Just going to throw The Depot thread up here for the time being. Going to grab some dinner – eating is what I do best – and will be back before game time. If you’ve got issues to address, you can get a head start on them now.
6:57: OF Josh Hamilton will NOT go on the disabled list today. He has been diagnosed with an intercostal muscle strain (thanks, Jeffrey!) on his left side and has been given a prescription of anti-inflammatory medication. As we mentioned earlier, the Rangers can afford to slow play making a decision on Hamilton because of the abundance of left-handed pitchers they will face this week. Dr. Keith Meister indicated that it would probably take about 48 hours to determine if the medication has any significant impact.
“We’ve got an opportunity to wait a day or two to make a decision,” general manager Jon Daniels said. “We can play it day by day right now. We will keep checking with him.”
The muscle strain rather than the bruising he suffered when he ran into the wall in Toronto last week could be the more significant injuries. Ribcage and side muscle injuries make it difficult to follow through on actions like swings that require torque.
7:32: Don’t worry about the strangeness of seeing Nomar Garciaparra in an A’s uniform. He’s left the game after that ole’ play. Bobby Crosby is now at third.
7:36: Made an interesting discovery that has absolutely no impact on this game, but I think is worth asking about for the weekend. You know what it is: Taylor Teagarden caught Matt Harrison one time in the majors last year; it was Harrison’s complete game shutout win over Oakland last September. Teagarden and Harrison worked very well last night, making adjustments in the game that led to a stunning turnaround. Wonder if it is just coincidence or if it is worth pairing them up again on Saturday when Harrison faces the Chicago White Sox.
7:53: A’s now move Crosby to second to replace Mark Ellis and Jack Hannahan becomes the third third baseman in three innings.
7:54: Ian Kinsler’s error to allow Oakland to tie the score at one in the top of the fourth was his first since August 1 of last season. It snapped a 33-game errorless streak for Kinsler.
8:07: Becca, you are still alive in hammy pool. Both Oakland players (Garciaparra and Ellis) left with left calf injuries.
8:08: Dot race: Blue wins.
8:20: In other injury news, RHP Kris Benson threw off a mound in the bullpen this afternoon and said the session went well. He threw about 45 pitches. It appears he will throw again before going on a rehab assignment. It sounds like Benson won’t be back before the middle of next week – at the earliest. At this point, it makes sense for the Rangers to go conservatively. There is Benson’s injury history to consider and the fact that RHP Scott Feldman pitched well in his first start of the season Saturday in place of Benson. Feldman will start again on Thursday.
8:43: While we have this break, just a reminder, in case you didn’t see it earlier, we are discussing possible InsideCorner night at Ballpark. If you are interested, we need to hear from you. Please go here and give us your thoughts.
8:45: Two on, no outs. Imperative Rangers get something out of this opportunity.
8:46: Andruw Jones: 5-for-6 with RISP this season.
8:54: Now, the Rangers have an issue following Chris Davis’ ejection for arguing balls and strikes. Do they move Hank Blalock to first (best defensive option) and lose the DH? Do they move Andruw Jones in from left and put David Murphy in the outfield? Do they move Saltalamacchia to first and put Teagarden behind the plate? Bad timing for Davis to express frustration, though it certainly looked like home plate umpire Eric Cooper encouraged the argument. Cooper may have been bothered because Davis said something after striking out in the fourth, but the idea is to diffuse an argument before it happens.
8:57: Jones it is.
9:00: So much for shutdown inning. Ryan Sweeney hits his first homer of the year on the third pitch from Kevin Millwood in the seventh. And again the Rangers let a lead slip away as soon as they grab it.
9:05: Another interesting move, or rather non-move, here. Ron Washington sticks with Kevin Millwood to face left-handed hitting Jack Cust even though Millwood has allowed 10 hits and has thrown 106 pitches. I’m assuming Cust was the whole reason Eddie Guardado was up in the Rangers bullpen. Guardado is now a left-handed situational guy, even if the Rangers don’t say as much. Guardado believes that’s what his role is and that’s what he’s trying to prepare for. He’s come in to face one or two batters in each of his last three appearances over the last two weeks.
“I’ve just got to figure out a way to be ready more quickly,” Guardado said. “No excuses. I’ve been 2-and-0 on every hitter every time I’ve come in there and that’s no way to pitch, especially when you’ve just got one guy to get.”
9:12: And now that the seventh is done, the game should belong to C.J. Wilson. Confidence issues aside, he is supposed to be the Rangers’ setup man. Wilson is warming but apparently won’t enter to start the inning. Guess the Rangers are holding him for left-handed Travis Buck, due up third. He will pitch here with a tie game, but at home, you use guys in a tie game just as you would with a one-run lead. I’d just as soon give him the ball to start the inning and go from there. But, then again, one goal has been to push the starting pitchers farther this season. Millwood, with 108 pitches and not his best stuff, is definitely getting pushed here.
9:23: Say this for Millwood: His offseason physical conditioning program seems to have done wonders. He was definitely pushed an inning tonight by going back out for the eighth. He handled the challenge magnificently with a 13-pitch 1-2-3 inning. It pushed his pitch count to 121 for the night. It’s the fifth consecutive time Millwood has thrown at least 110 pitches in an outing; that’s the first time in his career he’s had that kind of extended work load for that many starts. Also, it matched the highest total for pitches thrown by a Ranger starter in the Ron Washington era. RHP Vicente Padilla threw a 121-pitch complete game against Minnesota last April 27.
9:38: Frank Francisco closes it out with a six-pitch save. Very efficient.
Why isn’t Josh Hamilton on the DL? For this team to be good, he needs to be good; and he needs to be healthy to be good. He’s looked to be in great pain in the past couple of days. Why take a chance on his getting hurt worse?
Quote E Grant
“eating is what I do best”
You had me fooled. I just knew sleeping was your best talent.
@dic: If the Rangers feel like Hamilton can be back in a week or 10 days, rather than having to wait the full 15 days, they’d rather play with a 24-man roster than risk not having Hamilton for every game possible.
@CorditeSmoke: Good at sleeping on job; not so much at bedtime.
it is just plain fun seeing millwood pitch well. sure, it’s the first inning. but seeing that cust kid strike out is even funner. i seem to remember him lighting us up last year.
and evan, why no red tonight?
“He has been diagnosed with an intercostal muscle on his left side…”
I’m really not trying to be a jack-A here, but everyone has intercostal muscles on their left side, and since I know you know that, I’m assuming that sentence is just missing a word.
Judging from the last paragraph, I take it that it’s a muscle strain – is that correct? Hopefully that’s the case; a muscle/cartilage tear would be much worse.
And sorry in advance for talking about meaningless stuff during the game, but I just needed some clarification on J. Hamilton, since he’s extremely valuable to this club.
does it seem weird to anyone else seeing nomar in an oakland unimform?
oh. well. josh and tom just said it. so i guess it is odd.
@Jeffrey: I don’t recall where, but I believe I read earlier that doctors think it is just a strain. He was going on anti-inflammatory medication and they should know within 24 hours if it was more serious than a strain.
@becca: it’s only weird since he’s actually playing in an Oakland uniform unlike the time he spent in LA NOT playing in a Dodger uniform.
Seeing Nomar in any uniform other than a Boston one is still odd to me. I think the SNL skits help contribute to that for me.
to be fair, i spent all last year also not playing in a dodger uniform.
do yall think that Ian can win MVP this year?
THAT is what a shutdown inning looks like.
Did I just miss the Farm Report from this morning, or was one not posted? Help!
Oops, just noticed almost everything I said was already posted above other than the part about it being a strain. Sorry, it’s been one of those days.
@Jeffrey: Thanks for the catch. It’s a strain. I’ve included that now in the updated copy and also given you thanks for being tonight’s Copy Editor of the Game. No, seriously, that was a dumb omission on my part. But I’m sure there is someone, somewhere who is lacking an intercostal muscle who would like to have a talk with you.
@Tippett’s ‘stache thanks for the info
Man, I just feel bad for that guy, he just can’t stay healthy it seems.
you think it’s our fault for pointing him out? maybe if we hadn’t noticed him he’d be fine… let’s talk about crosby. maybe he pulls a hammy next?
Evan, don’t sweat the omission (not that you were) – your incomparable writing and reporting skills would put mine to shame any day. I am, however, quite a nerd, so thanks for putting up with the grammar police.
Back to the ballgame now…
@Tippett’s ‘stache: neither can the guy who replaced him at 3rd. This could get interesting before the series is over.
frickin time warner has the wrong guide!
@Ted: who is the 3rd base back-up to the back-up?
If the Athletics and Rangers were in different divisions (or even better, leagues), could there be two better trade partners?
@Ehren: whoever is sitting in section 304, row 12, seat 3.
Pair the two of them up one more time and see what happens. Salty would be due for an off day.
Ellis looks like he’s on the way out.
oops. looks like i lost on the hammy pull pool.
Ellis seems to be out of the game now…
@evan: shockingly, i think that teagarden should get the call. try not to let that blow your mind.
wow! i thought that giambi ball was GONE.
I think even Millwood thought that was out when Giambi hit it.
The Athletics’ base runners better be careful tonight, their legs might just fall off before the game is over.
Well there’s a brain freeze by Kins…1st error of the year. I’ll take 1 error every 20 games.
@becca: May have trouble finishing blog tonight. Mind blown.
@Evan: Thought I heard a pop.
@Ehren: could have been an A’s hamstring.
Kins shoulda had it, but try backhanding one hit fairly hard over the bag, sometime…not that easy. I think he just didn’t get his glove down.
Looks like Elvis works better on instincts – and he’s 20!
Blue hats… blue dot.
anyone know Millwood’s pitch count thus far?
You’re my boy Blue!!!!
@Jeffery: total 59-39 strikes
59
gotta love the rangers’ commitment to watching pitches today. they’re really taking it to extremes (i.e., ending every inning looking at strike 3)
59 pitches
@Ehren, @becca thanks
@j. thanks
How very awkward that was…
at least he had jerkey? or the play in the corner. not super smooth.
All of the above?
You know, I used to live in San Francisco and would go across the Bay to see the Rangers play the A’s. They had fans in left field who would play drums and horns all game long… never sat by them. Can’t remember if any of them painted their faces.
The myth of Cruz being a plus outfielder should now be over. He has a cannon, but he looks like he put on weight since he came to the Rangers, and he’s a step slow, gets too many bad reads and gets sloppy. On the other hand, he’s hitting with power. But let’s just keep things straight.
blood blisters/busted finger nails are much better in high def.
@Evan: Try not to bring up injury news again after seeing everyone on the mound. You think they’ll make Benson play an extended rehab to see how well Feldman does?
I must agree about the blisters!
Yeah, but Kins got lucky, a few games back, when he did a typical zone out play and dropped a pop–got lucky by getting an assist, when the runner had to wait cause it shoulda been caught, and he assumed it was.
Ho ho ho, Cruz gets an RBI on a walk!
are you kidding me?!?!? this ump is a chump. (rhyme unintentional)
Why is the ump staring Davis down! He was looking to throw someone out. TAG is right. You make the call, give one reply and don’t look at him.
he’s ripped his mask off and stared at every single batter he’s called out on strikes. or at least several of them.
Times like that make me wish the umps were forced to face reporters at the end of a game. I want to hear an explanation for that.
Umps are there to officiate the action, not become a part of it. Ump Fail.
@Ted: I couldn’t agree more. We still need to work on perfecting the shut out inning.
A kid like Davis has no collateral. He has to take the bad calls in silence. he has no skins on the wall. They will take no crap from a kid, especially after a bad call. You don’t show them up!
MLB is terrified of the umpires union. Players just have to suck it up and forget it. You’ll never win no matter how outrageous the ump is.
2 games in a row. starting pitcher gets through 7. 4 runs allowed in each. still, for the rangers, not too shabby.
is it smart to leave millwood in? oh…well, after hearing that cj is warming up, i’m fine with leaving kevin in.
they’re not that terrified – they told them to go home a few years ago.
@becca – I’ll take 7ip and >7 runs every game. (why is there no “less than or equal to” key? and why have my standards fallen so low? I blame the Ho for both)
i love ron’s non-move right now.
love even more after he got buck out!
Is anyone’s stomach turning over at the thought of Millwood out there again next inning? I mean, 121 pitches is a little scary now that we’re here. It’s all well and good until you actually start pushing guys. Hate to see him pay for going too long.
Good Lord
Looks like another hammy injury for the A’s!
45-31 Mavs lead!
giambi is looking old. and not because of the “error”.
can Frankie close again tonight? How many in a row has he pitched?
so much fun watching a game where we only use two pitchers.
When did Roger Dorn start playing 1st base for the A’s!? I liked that “Ole” BS.
Let’s hope it’s only 2 pitchers.
HELLO WIN COLUMN!!!
Nice, easy 9th. I like that.
only two! happy game! it’s happy pants time!
@becca-
Don’t know if you got an answer the other night, but, if you pinch hit for somebody ( as they did for Andrus), he’s gone–out of the game.
That’s why Omar was in there in the 9th.
