ARLINGTON – OF Josh Hamilton said he felt better Wednesday afternoon, 24 hours after beginning a corticosteroid (non-anabolic)-based drug treatment for his left intercostal (side) muscle strain. Rangers manager Ron Washington said he is prepared to wait on Hamilton through the weekend before suggesting he be placed on the disabled list.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen with it,” said Hamilton, who was supposed to be idle on Wednesday. “I think it needs some rest, but how much I don’t know. I know that I feel like I heal quicker than most people, so we’ll see.”
Rangers GM Jon Daniels said Tuesday he was not planning on making any decisions until Thursday and also indicated the possibility the team could wait longer than that if it doesn’t have other injuries pile up. Hamilton was out of the starting lineup for a fourth consecutive game. Marlon Byrd was scheduled to play center again.
5:06: Weather update – Tarp on field. Players taking batting practice indoors. Latest Weather Channel forecast calls for showers between 7-8 p.m. tonight and then mostly cloudy conditions until 11 or so. That’s when the Weather Channel site predicts a 70 percent chance of precipitation that could include severe thunderstorms. The Rangers are pretty optimistic about playing. Me? I’m always optimistic about playing.
6:28: Looks like a line of nasty ol’ showers are going to sweep through here around game time and delay the start.
8:07: Game banged (that’s postponed). Made up as part of a doubleheader on May 29. Doubleheader will start at 4:05. Vicente Padilla will be pushed back to tomorrow. Not sure about rest of rotation.
8:24: So, everybody in the rotation will be pushed back a day beacuse of the rainout. Perhaps biggest up-shot is that RHP Kevin Millwood will get an extra day of rest after his 121-pitch outing on Tuesday. Millwood won’t face Chicago this weekend, but will instead make the first start of the seven-game, three-city road trip in Seattle on Monday.
If Hamilton does go on the DL, who gets called up?
@Doug Fu: All three outfielders at Triple-A Oklahoma City are on the 40-man roster. If you go by current performance it’s likely Greg Golson, who has a slight advantage over Julio Borbon in batting average and an 80 point edge in on-base-plus slugging. If you go by major league experience, it’s Brandon Boggs, but he has struggled at Oklahoma City this season. Personal choice would be Boggs, but the Rangers might want to reward Golson for performance.
How far down the list do we have to to before we think about bringing up Ben Harrison?
they’ve updated the forecast and we’re looking clear. latest radar shows the rain is almost past Irving by now. headed to the park!
How many K’s can this team handle if Golson is called up?
What’s the likelyhood they call up a reliever instead of an outfielder. Especially if Holland and/or Mendoza has to go long today in relief of Padilla?
@Chris: If Golson is called up, it’s as an extra outfielder, so his plate appearances would be limited.
@Reagan: My guess is if Mendoza goes long tonight and the bullpen is used up, then Mendoza gets sent out tomorrow and somebody else gets called up.
Evan- since its raining and you might be bored at the ballpark right now, i have a amateur question: how many different pitches (fastball, slider, etc.) does Padilla employ and which of those is his best pitch?
Should we play the “How many trips by the trainer” tonight?
@Evan-
Assume you’ll keep us up to date on the weather so I’ll know when it’s time to wrestle with mlb.com. How bout periodic updates for planning purposes?
Any news if theyre going to play? Im sitting in the parking lot… without a radio.
Love this stuff with Chuck Morgan they are showing right now… but, a question. Why did he go to Kansas City for one year??? Disagreement with Rangers mgmt?
Still no wire from the ballpark.
Word
OT: Greinke just gave up his first earned run. Darn SI cover jinx!
Since we have no baseball to watch, has anyone noticed that “our” Edinson Volquez has tossed six shutout innings tonight?
DMN says delay should be 45-75 minutes. Thank God for some info–altho, of course, weather predictions in Texas are usually worthless.
and that “our” Doug Davis was not scored upon today?
I guess Evan went out to find some chow.
…still in the parking lot.
let’s not cherry pick all the numbers…like a whip of 1.87 for Volquez.
No winner in the home run pool. at least the pool is filled to the top by now.
Aww, I was ready to give Nadel and Barnett my first listen of the season!
Dang field crew/umpires… Oh… and rain!
So that means Danks against Harrison on Sunday? That’ll be fun…
@Evan I’ll bet it’s good to have a rainout every so often so you can take full advantage of the press dining room…….
A Friday doubleheader(May 29) when school is still in? What are the Rangers smoking? Saturday the 30th is better and let the planned Casting Crowns concert be in the stadium between games! Are we sure the Rangers really want to attract people to the stadium?
IDIOTS!!
Who will look after Hamilton while he is on the DL? Didn’t the Rangers fire Hambone’s mentor last season?
it was wet at the ballpark. stinking texas springs with crazy rain. looks like everyone gets a day off.
@jaydub…..Thought he left on his own? Evan, watja know on this one? I think the answer is family and thats not a bad idea……
Overheard in tunnel outside locker room after game called…..Geet yet?
@Evan How does a rainout effect the press dining room? Do they get the word in time and cancel some dishes or is it too late and the place is flooded with wings and beer?
I generally consider myself a creative person, and infact a few times people have told me, in private, that my flames of the creature Evan Grant are fairly original an entertaining if a little bit juvenile. Despite this creativity, and my decent technical background, I cannot imagine a method to create a worse writer if you tried. If you had an infinite amount of financial resources, academic resources, and social resources, I do not think it would be possible, even then, to create a writer who is even close to as offensive as Evan Grant.
Who makes a gang-bang play on words to describe a rain out? This question is easy, and I’ll tell you the answer. A sociopath.
