The Depot: Live Game Blog, News, Notes And Alex Rodriguez Update

ARLINGTON - The newest round of Alex Rodriguez allegations are out. Get ready for a whole bunch more of these as the May 12 publication date for Selena Roberts tell all book on Rodriguez nears. In short, this round of allegations suggests he used steroids in high school, used them after his trade from the Rangers to the New York Yankees and that while with the Rangers he “tipped” opposing hitters to the pitch that was coming.

What is your preferred date for Inside Corner Night at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington? All are Saturday nights.
June 13 vs. L.A. Dodgers
June 27 vs. San Diego Padres
July 18 vs. Minnesota Twins
August 1 vs. Seattle Mariners

An excerpt from the ESPN story:

A-Rod “pitch tipped” when he played for the Rangers by letting opponents at the plate know which pitch was coming in lopsided games. A-Rod expected players he helped would reciprocate when he was having an off night and needed to get his batting average up.

Ran this by Michael Young, who played with Rodriguez in the middle infield during Rodriguez’s entire time in Texas, and got the following answer.

“No,” Young said. “When I played with Alex, all he wanted to do was win. This is getting ridiculous. When he was here, the media gave him heat for trying to help our catchers out by helping them call games. And now they are saying he was helping the opponents out, too. This is just getting completely out of hand.”

Also checked with Eddie Guardado, who was playing for Minnesota at the time. Guardado said he never heard any such rumors about Rodriguez.

1:25: Another good day of eatin’ in the press room. BLT without the “T”. Piece of pizza. Delish. … In the meantime, RHP Kris Benson’s bullpen session went well and he is expected to make a rehab start on Sunday for Double-A Frisco. If that goes well, he’ll probably make another start for the RoughRiders on Friday, May 8.  So RHP Scott Feldman gets at least two more starts.  … Also RHP Dustin Nippert’s back is not responding to back treatment. He will receive a second opinion tomorrow. Don’t expect Nippert to be an option for the bullpen for at least a month.

1:40: 1B Chris Davis walks.  This may be a sign he’s starting to figure things out with his swing. Davis walked twice in the first 15 games, but has walked three times in his last four games plus one at-bat.

1:44: C Taylor Teagarden has entered for Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who struck in his first at-bat. More dizziness for Salty?

1:46: A look at the Rangers’ stats today indicates that these are the six lowest batting averages on the team entering today’s game: Hank Blalock (.271), Elvis Andrus (.264), Josh Hamilton (.242), Chris Davis (.194), Taylor Teagarden (.158) and David Murphy (.097). That the list would include a 20-year-old rookie (Andrus) and the backup catcher (Teagarden) should surprise nobody. You know what’s remarkable about the rest of the list: It’s all of the Rangers’ left-handed hitters. The Rangers are hitting just .257 against right-handers this season, which ranks 11th of 14 teams in the AL. This club was supposed to have issues with left-handed pitching because the lineup might be a little too left-handed. The struggles of the left side of the lineup against right-handers, however, is perplexing. The Rangers began the day 4-1 vs. lefty starters and just 6-9 vs. right-handers. Guess it’s a good thing that today’s Oakland starter, Dallas Braden, is a lefty and that the Rangers will face two more lefties (Mark Buehrle and John Danks) this weekend.

2:00: Jarrod Saltalamacchia left the game with eye irritation.

2:13: Has anybody had any problems voting or viewing the results of the vote in our poll?

2:30: A note on plate discipline. First, I must couch this by saying the Rangers have taken three walks in the first four innings against Dallas Braden, but for most of the first month, this team has been far too imptaient at the plate. Consider this: Entering yesterday’s games, the Rangers had faced a 2-0 or 3-1 count, counts that heavily favor the hitter, only 170 times. That was tied for 10th worst in the AL with the Chicago White Sox. Only Oakland (163), Minnesota (161) and Seattle (151) had been more impatient.

2:33: Also worth noting is that the L.A. Angels had seen only 171 such counts. Why is that worth noting? Because among the AL West teams, the Rangers seem to be pretty darn patient. To win the division, a team need not necessarily be patient within the West.

2:39: Second and third, nobody out in the fifth inning. Nos. 3-4-5 hitters up. Oakland starter Dallas Braden at 99 pitches. Rangers MUST score here.

2:44: And there is your wasted golden opportunity right there. Second and third, no outs and no runs scored. Bases loaded and one out and no runs scored. DH Hank Blalock waved wildly at teh first pitch he saw from tiring Dallas Braden and eventually popped to second for the second out. Nelson Cruz swung at three straight pitches to end the inning.

3:00: With Taylor Teagarden’s sixth inning strikeout, the Rangers have 179 April strikeouts. It’s the seventh most April strikeouts since the team moved to Texas in 1972. The  record, which seems untouchable without lots and lots of extra innings, is 196. The thing is that the Rangers are playing only their 21st game in April. In each of the six seasons with more April strikeouts, the team played at least 25 games.

3:25: I can understand the frustration that Eddie Guardado displayed that led to his ejection (after he had already been removed from the game), but I just don’t think Guardado had much of a case. The frustration comes from his inability to retire left-handed hitters, which is now his sole job. He’s allowed three of the last four he’s faced to reach and lefties have a .571 on-base percentage against him after Jack Cust drew a four-pitch, bases-loaded walk. Guardado, on his way back to the dugout had a long jawing session with home plate umpire Angel Campos before getting ejected. But I thought all four pitches were wide, at least from up high in the press box (never saw TV replays of pitch locations). Guardado threw his hat and glove into the stands after the ejection, which I think is bound to get him disciplined. Not sure if it’s a suspension or not, but there will some kind of pennance.

3:52: No HR Pool winners today. Sorry. Thanks for playing. Maybe tomorrow. Everybody picks guys in the early innings, nobody ever goes for the later innings. Hmm, new strategy any one?

4:05: Ryan Sweeney takes home run away from Ian Kinsler and I’m suggesting it is, overall, a better play than Gary Matthews Jr.’s legendary catch against Mike Lamb. Matthews went higher and was twisted more, but the game was already out of hand at the time that catch was made. This catch came with two men on base and two outs in the bottom of the eighth. If Kinsler homer had fallen over the wall, the Rangers go from being down 3-1 to up 4-3 with three outs to play before clinching a winning April.

4:13: Thinking I’m heading over to Post-Game Show.

Must say I agree with Mr. Young. It is getting out of hand. The guy has already been through enough, lets just let it go and play some ball.

  • blalock

I have a really hard time seeing how anybody could get away with it, or that there would be any benefit for Arod to do something like this… It is pretty dang stupid, the logistics of it, and the reasoning for it just dont seem to be there.

  • Evan Grant

I’m not sure what technique could be used in such a system unless Rodriguez was calling games for catchers and that his relay system was simple, it was easy for opponents to pick up. I’ve just not heard of a player doing something like this before.

  • Ted Price

Plus, you’re assuming he’s involved in all the meetings between pitcher and catcher on what the signs are based on the situation: runner on second, etc. I also like to think that ballplayers are somewhat savvy enough to recognize if something like that is going on and would put an end to it.

  • Chris

Why would this be hard to believe? Afraud is a d-bag…

  • Ted Price

Does Padilla have a date or something?

  • becca

i hate that work frowns upon me watching baseball games on tv during business hours.

@ted: does he look all gussied up or something?

  • Auditor

At the game. This might be a record low attendance if more fans do not show up.

  • Dr. Pepper presents Batface McGee

I hate padilla. I really, really do.

  • Ted Price

@becca: no, he started the game a few minutes early. We come back from commercial, and he’s already pitching to the second batter.

  • Little O

There’s more than enough factual things to criticize Rodriguez about without adding stupid stuff. No way he would be allowed in a clubhouse doing that.

  • Evan Grant

@Ted Price, becca: If Padilla works fast, that’s a good thing. It’s when he slows the game to a crawl that it is painful to watch.

  • DallasManUFan

@ Becca – It may be time to quit that job…

  • b.money

    @becca Work from HOME! :)

  • becca

if only either of those were possible… but the mlb.com Game Day widgit majiggy is pretty fun. i just miss the sounds/scenes of the game. be sure to let me know when beanball starts.

  • b.money

Anybody have creative ideas on a fitting end to my A-Rod Rangers jersey? I regretted buying it before I even did. . . but I got suckered in by the length of the contract he had versus the guys I really wanted. Lesson learned.

I was thinking about trying to give it back to him but don’t want to get in trouble, so maybe I’ll just decorate it and use it as a flag when he’s back in town.

  • becca

maybe padilla’s lighnight fast game pace shook staly up.

  • Evan Grant

@becca: Are you typing in the dark?

  • becca

i meant lightning fast game pace. i doubt anyone’s night light would shake up salty.

  • Doug Fu

Not able to listen here at work…does the Oakland pitcher have good stuff, or are we helping him out?

  • becca

ha. the mlb.com gameday thingamajig said “Jarrod Saltalamacchia left the game with an injured head”

  • Auditor

Considering how vain and vindicative Arod was when he was here (remember his personal assistant fiasco) and how far the rangers were behind it would not suprise me that he would tip pitches.

That being said S Roberts cannot make a general claim that he did so and be credible. For it to have creedence she must site actual games. I bet the book will tell actual games and when it happened.

As for M Young he seems to be the biggest Arod fan ever. No crime or fault could be so horrible that he would have a discouraging word. Hello Jamey are you reading this? Great for the community and gives his time graciously but NOT the best person to seek a quote from for an independent view of Arod.

  • Evan Grant

@Doug Fu: Braden has thrown 67 pitches to get six outs as I type this. The Rangers appear to be taking a patient approach against him. Braden has pitched well this season, bringing a 2.52 ERA into this start. He’s not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his previous five outings and he’s pitched at least 5.2 innings in all of them.

  • Last of the Romohicans

@ Becca – my work frowns upon me commenting on blogs instead of being productive… but does that keep me off AIM all day? NO! And my industry’s going through a never-before-seen blood-letting (well, save newspapers and the auto industry)

  • Doug Fu

@ Evan Grant: Thanks. Stuff like that just doesn’t come across watching a box score online.

I do like seeing Padilla with only 56 pitches through 4. If he keeps that rate up he “should” be able to get us at least 7 today.

  • Last of the Romohicans

@auditor – there’s only a few guys left in the clubhouse from when A-Rod was here (Young, Blalock). If you’re looking for a quote, Young’s about the only one in the club house to go to.

  • jon

I’m unable to vote using firefox on a mac.

  • Evan Grant

@Doug Fu: By the way, that was 67 pitches to get nine outs. He’s now up to 87 and 11 outs.

  • t ball

I voted and viewed the results, but then couldn’t navigate back to this page, had to go to the homepage.

  • Doug Fu

@Evan Grant: Yeah, it’s nice to see they’re making him work. That’s two walks on full counts so far this inning.

Hope they can make him pay.

  • David C

How has Padilla made it 4+ innings w/o giving up a run yet?

Eric & Dave are talking about him throwing 88mph fastballs again. Whats up with that? Is the gun in Baltimore THAT much faster than normal?

  • Connor

Did anyone else catch this…after the Teagarden walk to load the bases in the fourth, the telecast on FSSW zoomed in on the Oakland manager mouthing to the pitcher and catcher to change signs. Evan, do you know of Rangers using opposing teams’ signs with a man on second? Is this common in all baseball?

  • Jed E.

    Evan,

Are we still trying to pull everything against this guy?

  • Last of the Romohicans

I’d think that if you know the signs, you use the signs. Just don’t want the other guys knowing you know the signs. Unless you’re A-Rod – in which case you tell everyone what’s coming.

  • Working?

    Poll not working for me

  • Doug Fu

Poll not working for me either.

  • Pedro Cerrano

Padilla appears to be on a complete game pace. Less than 15 pitches an inning. Does he look pretty fresh?

  • Ehren

I hate being at work during a game! Just got out of a 2 hour meeting! Evan, you need and assisstant?

  • t ball

Odd to see Oakland on that list of least patient teams.

  • Ehren

I couldn’t see the vote either

  • James

As Andruw Jones is intentionally walked to load the bases with one out, it provides another opportunity for Evan to tell us how opponents are respecting Andruw’s bat rather than playing lefty vs. lefty…

  • Auditor

@Last I agree not many have been around since 03. But it is like asking D Cheney what he thought of his boss – the answer is a given.

If you were S Roberts who would be the best person to actual quote?

  • becca

i got to hear a bit of the 5th on the radio. i enjoyed that the mic picked up a fan screaming “Make ‘em pay, Hank”. sadly, he didn’t.

  • Pedro Cerrano

OK fellas, Vicente’s pitching well… Give him some help! Don’t make me get Joboo!

  • Last of the Romohicans

I don’t think in that circumstance there’s a single “best” person to quote re: A-Rod’s character. I think you ask alot, find a bunch of different answers and put them all out there with the facts.

My thoughts about the pitch-tipping – it’s a very, very rare thing to be discussed. In fact, I don’t remember anyone ever being accused of such a thing. To me, in the circumstance where something is unheard of is to believe it, because, well, there’s nothing to make up that lie on.

Also, “me and 24 kids” is enough of a statement FROM A-ROD for me to believe that A-Rod had no problem acting selfishly for his interests and not the team.

Do I believe it? Yes, yes I do.

Now, Young is going to defend his friend, because… well, A) It’s his friend, B) There’s no benefit to throwing him under the bus.

Guardado – well, there’s a code. We all know how rampant roids were in the game, and how many guys have come out and said “yep, saw it all the time.” They all go Col. Klink on steroids, history leads to the supposition that they’d do it for him tipping pitches.

When your A-Rod, you have earned enough bad-will that whenever you’re accused of something at this point, you have the burden of proof. Simple denials won’t do it.

What’s sad – at this point, don’t we all have to root for Barry to keep the home run record?

  • Evan Grant

@James: Different situation in game, etc. But, yes, opponents are respecting Jones’ bat. Why wouldn’t they? Right now, it makes sense to go after the left-handed hitters in the Rangers lineup. They are overanxious and impatient and getting themselves out, which is exactly what happened with the bases loaded in the fifth.

  • Jed E.

Evan: Is Teagarden so good defensively that the Rangers can get away with ignoring his bat? He is really struggling to make contact, much less getting on base.

  • Evan Grant

@Jed E.: Hard to ignore the bat issue right now, but if the team was firing on all cylinders, so to speak, yes, you could carry one non-offensive guy at the bottom of the lineup.

  • Jed E.

I just wonder if it would be smart to call up Ramirez, so he could catch some and play first against lefties since Davis looks lost against LHP right now.

  • Evan Grant

@Jed E.: If the Rangers sit Davis right now, they will play Andruw Jones more. Not sure if they’d go with Jones at first and leave Hank Blalock at DH or the other way around, but Jones, not Max Ramirez, would be the first option.

  • JB

RE: Poll. Can’t vote or view either. Using firefox.

  • James

I guess we have a different definition of respect. If the runners had been on 1st and 2nd rather than 2nd and 3rd would they have walked him with a lefty coming up? The situation was begging for an intentional walk with one out and a righty hitting versus a lefty. Who knows, they might have intentionally walked Teagarden to go lefty-lefty.

  • idiotbox

Been unable to vote on bot firefox and IE.
And who didn’t see that coming when they brought in every-day Eddie?

  • JL

Eddie’s done…. time to cut him loose. I loved the guy last season, but his arm is D-U-N done…

  • Auditor

Getting some sun in the outfield and I am sure the TV did not pick it up but Byrd just was schooled by Jones on the throw home. Byrd is NOT a CF. Jones may be slow but he can hit the catcher at home.

  • becca

someone wants to punch auditor. it’s me. but i’m not violent. it’d probably be a noogie. and it’s only cause i’m jealous.

  • Brett in SD

I saw on tv that Jones was talking to Byrd, and Byrd looked apologetic – thought maybe Byrd was wrong to call off Jones or something.

Any idea what Jones was saying to the umpire in his last AB?

  • Auditor

Jones could not have made the catch and throw it home. Think he was giving him pointers on being a CF.

But byrds throws were horrible. Draw a straight line and he was no where close.

Also, did TV catch the great arse showing of Padilla when he left the mound? OMG!

  • lsbs

Ryan Sweeney molests collies. That is all.

  • JustSaying

@b.money Burn it a) in front of stadium on Inside Corner night b) burn it when the Yankees and here and A-Rod comes to bat……c) take it back to the Rangers store and ask for refund claiming it was a fraudulent transaction……….d) go out with those crazy ladies and buy some eggs and boil them……..
