ARLINGTON – Everything today must be preceded by “in the event of a game tonight.” So, in the event of a game tonight, C Jarrod Saltalamacchia will return to the lineup after leaving Thursday’s game and missing Friday’s game with eye irritation. Saltalamacchia wasn’t at the park on Friday, as doctors suggested he stay in relatively dark rooms to allow eye drops to alleviate the irritation.
Saltalamacchia said doctors determined that something had “contaminated” his contact solution, which is why the irritation spread from one eye to the other. He said he was having trouble with the eye before Thursday’s game, but thought the issue would resolve itself. By the time he came to the plate for his first at-bat, he couldn’t see out of the right eye. He grounded to third, then came out of the game.
“I probably shouldn’t have even hit because I couldn’t see,” Saltalamacchia said. “Making contact while I was blind, that’s pretty good.”
Saltalamacchia did not lose his sense of humor during the eye escapade. He playfully accused backup C Taylor Teagarden of tampering with his eye solution, then acknowledged he’s already had a year’s worth of bizarre injuries in a month. He also had to leave a game early this season because of dizziness.
“I definitely lead the league in weird injuries,” he said. “I’m embarrassed, really. Somebody asks you why you came out and you say ‘Um, I was dizzy.’ And then they ask you again and you say ‘I think I got something in my eye.’ I’d much rather be run over, that’s more manly. I played last year with some injuries and I want to play every day. I don’t want anything to keep me out of the lineup.”
6:46: Weather appears to be clearing, though there may be one more shower in this current line. Current best-case scenario is a start somewhere between 7:30-8:00.
8:08: Rangers began first inning with a leadoff double from Ian Kinsler and didn’t score a run. Omar Vizquel bunted him to third. Michael Young struck out and Hank Blalock grounded to first. That’s 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position over the last three games for the Rangers.
8:13: Couple of quick points on Blalock’s struggle in run-producing situations. He has two hits in his last 14 at-bats with runners in scoring position. And the problems magnify as the game wears on. He’s hitting .077 in “close and late” situations and .167 after the sixth inning.
8:25: On discipline/patience: The Rangers have two of the bottom 10 in the AL in average number of pitches seen per plate appearance. Hank Blalock entered Saturday ranked 85th (3.30) among 92 qualifiers and Marlon Byrd (3.19) ranked 89th. Blalock’s inning-ending ground out in the first came on the third pitch. Byrd lef off the second by popping to second base on the second pitch.
Said manager Ron Washington of the offense’s approach: “It’s just not happening right now in those big situations. We’re getting into situations where one base hit will win us a ballgame and it just isn’t happening.”
Asked if he thought the offense had been too antsy with runners in scoring position, Washington said he did not think so.
8:38: And there you have it. Spend all morning discussing the RISP situation and the first two innings of this game and the Rangers go and make you look like a shmoe. I’m the shmoe. Hank Blalock delivers a three-run homer with two outs in the third to break the team’s 0-for-12 stretch with runners in scoring position.
8:41: No winners in water-logged, watered-down home run contest.
8:42: While the Rangers have hit lots of homers this season, they’ve not done much damage with them lately. Blalock’s homer ended a stretch of 23 homers for the team, dating back to April 15th, that had either come with the bases empty or one man on.
8:47: Green wins dot race. Green is a mudder.
9:06: Little update from Ballpark. Rangers score six in fourth. Idiot runs on field. Rain falling. Delay. Game is not official.
9:27: About to resume play. Rain delay short enough that Brandon McCarthy is going back to the mound, but he’s not pitched in a very long time when you factor in the Rangers’ six-run inning in the bottom of the fourth. We’re talking about 40-45 minutes of inactivity.
9:30: Rain has resumed. But if McCarthy gets Chris Getz, game will be official.
9:32: McCarthy retires gets Getz (hey, that sounds funny). Game is now official if another delay comes around. Groundskeeper Dennis Klein on his way to discuss weather with crew chief Tim McClelland. There is more rain in the area.
9:32: Play halted again with another shower. If this lasts ends up ending game, I can’t imagine the White Sox are going to be very happy. But this may be a quick shower.
9:45: Rain is slowing again. I suspect we’ll begin play again, but there are other showers in the area and there could be more rain delays. We are on our third now. Exciting. Good thing I have to leave the house tomorrow at 7 a.m. for flight to Seattle. Jeff Miller will be here tomorrow night to cover the game.
10:03: Grounds crew huddling on tarp. Rain slowed again.
10:10: Water dumped off tarp, but another cell of storms is expected in 10-15 minutes. Decision coming once that cell either hits or passes by.
10:15: Can you just imagine the things that might come out of Ozzie Guillen’s mouth if this game is called official after resumption of play that lasted just long enough for White Sox to make three outs?
10:28: More activity on tarp. Looks like it is about to be removed. Another idiot goes on field for a slide on tarp.
10:30: Play scheduled to resume at 10:45.
10:41: Lance Broadway warming up for White Sox. Luis Mendoza will apparently replace Brandon McCarthy for Rangers. Shortly, Jeff Miller will replace me.
11:03: In case you were wondering, the last time Mendoza pitched in a game was April 19 for Oklahoma City. He’s working on essentially two weeks of rest. No wonder the bases are now loaded.
11:05: No longer loaded. A.J. Pierzynski hits grand slam. Now, the Rangers are going to have to turn to the relievers they actually trust to try and get through this game. Thought that crosses the mind is that if the Rangers can’t trust him to pitch in any situation, then maybe they’d be better served by simply going to 11 pitchers until they find themselves in need of a long man. The Rangers have refused to pitch Mendoza in anything resembling a close game and they hoped he’d be able to keep this game close. Not sure if he’ll be able to give them anything more than one inning.
11:08: Mendoza is supposed to be a long man. He will apparently give the Rangers one inning in a game they led 9-1 when he entered. That simply doesn’t cut it. Eddie Guardado is warming.
11:17: Upside of having to go with Guardado here is that he can potentially get in some necessary work. That may be the thing he needs to help him rediscover command.
11:24: Things not getting any better for Guardado. Allowed three hard hits while retiring only two batters. Here’s the bottom line on Guardado: Rangers aren’t yet ready to cut the cord on him, valuing the track record over 16-plus seasons vs. four bad weeks. But if he doesn’t rebound quickly – and my guess is like within the next week – the club is going to be looking for another left-handed option. A.J. Murray has allowed one run on five hits in 10.1 innings at Double-A Frisco. He might be the next choice.
11:39: It is embarrassing that in a game the Rangers led 9-1 going to the sixth, Frank Francisco is now warming up. Yes, embarrassing.
11:46: Fourth rain delay of the night. Night officially disaster. Live blogging postponed for remainder of night, though the conversation line remains open. Jeff Miller will write a story on the game tonight. He will be with you tomorrow. Go gentle on him. He’s new to the live blog community.
11:52: Tarp coming off the field again. I’m officially declaring this a record for most rain delays in a Rangers’ nine-inning game. Ran this by master of PR John Blake who couldn’t confirm but did acknowledge “It does seem like a lot of rain delays.” Well said, Mr. Blake.
@Evan: Good to hear, really wanted to watch this game tonight after how last night’s game ended.
Game is on.
looks like mccarthy has been doing some training with padilla.
@becca: Oh, so you are back after ditching us for a band, huh. Not that our feelings are hurt or anything.
Can anyone tell me what Cruz’ walk-up music is?
Evan..it looks to me like Blalock is washed up ..what do you think Rangers do with him?
i wanted to make it out tonight, but thunderstorms scare me. you think if there are left over nolan figurines, they’ll pass them out some other night?
and i agree with alan. blalock’s hit some big hits, but i’ve never been a huge fan. and no, it’s not because dale hanson thinks he’s a chump. there was trade talk in spring training. what ever happened to that? i would think the rangers would be happy to deal him. is there just no interest?
is it me or have we bunted more tonight than we have all season?
@Alan: I’ve got to say Blalock has been a disappointment for much of the season. He’s hit six homers, but the numbers in key situations have just not been good and with the team needing somebody to step up as a run producer in Josh Hamilton’s absence, he has not done so. Don’t think he’s washed up. He’s 28, for Pete’s sake. Disappointment, yes. Can’t argue that.
TAG calls it!
Nice call by TAG.
great hit. double might be my favorite hit. not that i’m rating them.
Well, I guess you are sorry you called Blalock out now. Just kidding!
and two in a row
@Tom B, if it means he starts hitting well, i’ll start talking about his mother as well!
holy mc crap. 3 doubles. i’m in heaven.
The Michael Young at bat just before Hank’s home run in the third was the single worst at bat I’ve ever witnessed in my 55 years of watching baseball. Period. I will never understand why he chooses to stand in left field when he’s hitting, and then swinging at pitches, one after another, that are outside. And why are we batting this type of hitter third in the order?
Jerry, that at-bat by Young was terrible … but I remember some of Juan G’s at-bats … those had to be the worst ever!
I agree that at-bat was bad, but let’s not crucify the guy! He’s actually doing pretty well this year.
Also, we probably didn’t trade Hank in spring training because the 6.2 mil turned out to be high in the current market.
Remember, He’s playing a game where he can fail two out of three times and still be a star and three out of four failures and be pretty dang good.
Maybe Josh going on the DL (instead of being day-to-day) is what the offense needed. Now they know he won’t be there and other people will have to step up (not that Josh was doing all that well). What do you think, Evan?
if the game is called before the end of the top half of the 5th, will they finish the game at a later date from this point forward, or do they start all over again?
start all over
does that mean that all the stats get wiped away?
yes
that stinks. makes sense. but still stinks.
everyone enjoy their rain delay. i’m grabbing a beer.
so the one time in the last few weeks that the Rangers didn’t need an offensive barrage to erupt, they get one. these guys are snake bit. however tv just said this is only a cell and it should move through, more baseball tonight. I hope so.
that beer sounds good! are we picking this back up when the rain delay is over?
Don’t think Ozzie doesn’t know the rules. He has probably told his pitchers to walk and go long on the pitch count and changed pitchers just looking for a cloud from the West. Give up some hits. All the guys from Venz. are hooking up tonight.
While I admit that is possible, I don’t think that even Ozzie would tell his pitchers to give up hits/runs in the hope of a rainout. You may stall, but you don’t give up runs! (Do you?). I’m curious. How many of you think that Ozzie was willing to give up hits/runs in the hope of a rainout because his team was already behink?
sorry about the typo — behind.
We are about to resume play.
@Evan This would seem a good time to hit the press dining room…….we’re done tonight…………
Geez I’ll be starving now!
i guess it’s possible. i don’t know if any of us could ever understand what’s in ozzie’s head. but i wouldn’t think it’s likely.
maybe one of their players was just tipping our guys on pitches.
Wow! Sorry guys! I guess there are new rules that I didn’t know about! TAG says it would have been “suspended” and resumed at that point! Damn, I’m behind the times. Why didn’t someone correct me?
Let’s see how effective McCarthy is after the long layoff. I hope they bring Padilla in if he isn’t effective and let him hit a Sox player or two. Just to keep Saturday night interesting.
@tom b: i like the way you think.
It’s up to the umpires now. It can be stopped and be official.
well, the bulls/celtics game is at least an interesting stand-by.
On this early exit from the ballpark I remember the great Billy Martin stories at the Arlington bars……..who should we expect to find at the bar tonite?
Had the game been called before the top half of the fifth was complete, it still would have been no game. Stats would have been washed away. The only thing MLB has done away with is tie games.
Thank you! That makes me feel a little better!
Message to Ozzie (And don’t tell me isn’t watching this) You have Danks in the rubber match tomorrow. Let it go. Omar will buy you a Mequita or something similar. Take a break Ozzie.
I’ll buy Ozzie a shot or two…….for the team of course……
scooper – i heard Tom say that too and scratched my head. Took off for the rules.
See Rule 4.12(a) here. I see Evan has already clarified the mistake. Only 6 ways a game is suspended. Bookmark these rules. Helpful about 6 times a year.

@JackDaddy – Thanks! I hate to feel stupid!
jack daddy is showing us all up by pulling out the smart on a saturday night. show off.
Jack Daddy – is pretty pathetic that he’s sitting home at a Saturday night (relieved his boys are snoring) and contemplating whehter to go to sleep before 10!!
Also, trust me, Jack Daddy didn’t know the rule — had to look.
We needed this kind of win tonight. I told a buddy today that I can’t remember a stetch to start as season where we either won or were in 20 out of the 22 games. The hitters had been pressing.
btw, i actually can speak english and spell — too tired to correct typos!!
@JackDaddy – it says something about me that I was so willing to believe that I was wrong! In my younger days, that would have never happened. I was just too lazy to look up the rules. Thanks for your help!
@Jack Daddy Thanks cause now I know what the umpire is supposed to call out as the game begins…….It’s “Play” not “Play Ball”……Really think that rule has to change…….
JustSaying – interesting, didn’t know that.
Look at the intro – Rod Carew is on the rules committee?
Scooper, you were right, Tom was mistaken.
Anybody staying up for this finish? Anbody think they WILL refinish? Raining like a SOB here (near White Rock).
what’s wrong with me tonight? refinish? moron.
Evan,
I was wondering same thing (about ozzie), but i’m sure they confer with the managers, don’t they? The radar looked completely clear behind that first storm. Cells are popping up left and right, right over us. Can’t predict them.
F ozzie. Also, PLEASE let’s rip Danks tomorrow. I can’t bear to read all the b.s. on the DMN blog that is sure to follow if he dominates us (best part of this blog is that those guys haven’t seemed to migrate over here).
I’m ok with Rod Carew on the rules committee….but what about Nolan, he should be on it to discuss the rules on mound charging…….LOL
i am waiting for ozzie to turn our north texas storms into a conspiracy, maybe brought on by our fancy lights in the outfield signaling the rain gods that also have something to do with allowing multiple doubles in an inning. regardless, i can’t wait to hear what he says.
especially after justsaying buys him a few shots.
Wilmer Font – 5ip, 2 Hs, 1 run just 1 walk tonight.
@evan: tell jim knox that he can get on tv without resorting to silly tarp sliding antics.
Ozzie is entertaining! I’m sure he’ll have a lot to say about this game, even if we end up finishing 9 innings. It will still be some kind of conspiracy!
Game resumes at 10:45. Chuck just announced it.
I still love Ozzie’s comment about A.J. Pierzynski. This isn’t verbatim, but it’s close and the gist of it is correct: He’s the kind of guy that you hate when he is on the other team, and you hate a little less when he is on your team!
Ozzie is into that soft underbelly we call middle relief. 8 runs is a lot to make up. Throw strikes!
Ozzie has to be po’ed about this……first he was was to get to the bar early and now he gets his nose rubbed into to it in a slow painful motion……Rangers bullpen can’t give up 8 runs in 4 innings right?
LOL thanks for sharing scooper…..I know the Giants still hate him………
@justsaying: since cj pitched last night, you’d think the worst risk of it happening would be gone.
Hey Evan,
Might I recommend that you use something like Cover It Live to do the live blogs? That way we won’t have to constantly refresh the page and comments can be left that way as well.
Just a suggestion.
@becca — are you a cj hater? I think he would be a very good pitcher if he could ever mature emotionally and stop acting like a spoiled little boy! “If I can’t play with all my pitches every time out (no matter what the team needs), then I’m gonna pout!”
i’m not a hater! i just get frustrated with him. after he was moved from the closer spot last year, it just doesn’t seem like he’s ‘in’ it when he’s pitching. i don’t believe it’s just that he doesn’t care, but it’s definately concentration issues.
i’d love him to be great. but lately, he seems to be more of a liability than a sure thing.
and for real. maddox has GOT to keep padilla from haning out with the bullpen guys.
I actually like the guy (most of the time). I really do think he tends to pout a little though. He’s always said he either wants to start or close, and it doesn’t look like the Rangers are going to give him another chance to do either. He’s going to have to learn to deal with not getting what he wants.
Get him outa there……..
Jennings is available yes? He wasn’t used last night……Is Wash SAVING him?
I am really getting ticked at hearing excuses why we’re not using Jennings…..geez he’s a free agent after this year….let’s get our money’s worth and stop this painful coddling………
He probably was. Why waste Jennings in a 9-1 game. I guess it’s different, now.
9-1 was a perfect spot to get Mendoza in the game for the first time. I doubt if a grand slam homer was part of the plan.
Nice 36 ERA, Mendoza.
Eddie was just mad the other night that he’s old…..I totally understand that and would lower his fine using the AARP clause in the rulebook……I still love Eddie………
@Dylan: We will use coveritlive some, but more for chats than live blogs. I like the separation here of my commentary and our conversation. In coveritlive, it’s all kind of bunched together. There are some issues with that, too, but overall it’s really good software, I think.
Can we lower his ERA the same way? Say maybe an old age ERA
ouch. why couldn’t they have just called the game after the 5th?
@scooper, @David C: The point is to not waste a guy like Jennings, but the Rangers have absolutely no trust in Mendoza to pitch in any situation in which the game could still be won or lost. But if the Rangers don’t have faith in their long man, they might as well not have him.
@Evan: I agree. If they can’t trust him to pitch in a 9-1 game, he doesn’t need to be here.
if he’s not our long reliever, who is?
Thank God for Kason Gabbard! Oops! Darren O’Day!
someone who’s down on the farm right now.
@becca: He is the long reliever and the Rangers had a chance to go to him last week when the club took a 5-4 to the sixth inning in a Brandon McCarthy start. That’s where the long man can demonstrate real value to the team. Instead, the Rangers went to their right-handed setup man, Jason Jennings. And it meant another five days on the shelf for Mendoza. So, he’s not only untrusted, but rusty. A bad combo.
please release Mendoza. I don’t care if somebody picks him up and the light goes off. More power to him.
And please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please,
scroll down
please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please,
Can we end the Eddie Guardado experiment? There are guys pitching in the D.I.S.D. with better stuff. He is finished. If we blow this game, it will be the worst loss that I can remember.
I think it’s almost unanamous how we feel about Eddie but he is starting to remind me of Charles Heston in Solvent Green as he is being carted off at the end of the movie……….WE LOVE YOU EDDIE
Just got home from wedding in Paris, tx and I’m shocked that I’m able to watch the game. Why do I feel like we need to score 16 to win tonight?
Actually, Holland should be. He should never have been used last night in that situation. This was his place tonight. Heat and strike.
Let him drive the bus home but Nada Wash job.
Right handed set-up man? Really? When is he going to be used that way? Then what’s O’Day and why is he setting up? I’m going to have a Jennings misuse corony if this keeps happening…..
another beaned player and an ozzie outburst. fantastic.
3 moves we must make:
1. release Andruw Jones and recall Boggs. I know Jones has hit some home runs. But he does nothing else. we need the energy and station to station baseball that Boggs can provide.
2. shoot mendoza and bring up ANYBODY (presumably this is Anna Benson’s husband’s spot once his injury is healed).
3. Find the closest cemetary with a finished grave and dump Guardado’s slightly pulsating corpse into it.
4. Find the shortest leash they sale in the metroplex and attach it to CJ’s neck. The minute that leash tightens, option him to OKC
i guess that’s 4 moves
nice job, darren o-d
Jack Daddy is a Radical Ranger. I like your style if not your substance
@Tom B: You, sir, are a winner. The sixth should have been Holland’s job tonight.
If I’m Frankie’s agent I’m just licking my chops over this opportunity for Frankie…..add another save in a high percentage situation……strange how business effects the game…..
Can we get a Frankie Cheer for the 9th?
@Evan – yes, it IS embarrassing! Any suggestions?
Really? Another delay? Just call the ****ing game.
so another rain delay…are they just going to call it? i don’t know if i can bear anymore alternative fox sports network programming. it might be bed time.
I’m usually more subdued and rationale. Feeling feisty tonight tonight. Haven’t slept much since Sweeney made that catch to rob Kinsler.
2 things burn me more than anything else in sports – losing a football game due to a missed extra point and blowing an 8 run lead in baseball.
This team gets my support even through the thin. But dang, I’m frustrated tonight. I’m going to the game tomorrow and now our pen is going to be at less than full strength for no good reason.
Evan – I guess Vizquel showed me tonight, huh?
I also usually don’t mispell every third word. I think I’m drunk.
@JackDaddy – if you only THINK you’re drunk, then you’re not!
After tonite’s painful yo-yo game I think a Inside Corner reader should be designated as a “game gopher” for Evan to run back and forth to the press room and then cover for potty breaks in case of 5 hour marathons…….Becca I know he would go for that if you volunteered for initial duty…….maybe even have a special uniform (RED) and an “EG” cap……I’d fly in for that special duty……pay would be a special patch……..
@jack daddy: at least you’re not banging a white paint bucket and screaming at your computer screen.
and yes, losing an 8 run lead is not acceptable. ever.
Evan,
I know A.J. is coming back from a major injury and I also knew he had been dominate so far in Frisco. But can you run a piece on him soon to catch us up on his story? It’s been a while and I have kindo lost track of him. Also, why they call him Pirate.
Safe flight to Sea.
@justsyaing: i’m in. and i just have to drive from dallas. i will still insist that my red uniform have julio franco’s name on it. but that cap can be all evan’s.
@JackDaddy – it is frustrating, but pitching has always been our weakness. It’s just ridiculous because we have a better team than this!!! The closer we get to being a really good team, the less patience we are going to have with the pitching. Things that we have learned to tolerate (like tonight) are going to really drive us crazy! That feeling of frustration is a sign that we believe the team can be really good. Wow! Enough amateur psychoanalysis! I think I’m the one who’s drunk! ‘Night, y’all!
How Evan can find this many seemingly reasonable people with obviously nothing better to do to hang around for 6 hours and this quality of baseball and still stay up to talk about it….even when Evan bails. Why didn’t he just go straight to DFW and take a Redeye to Seattle? So, anybody for breakfast and a beer? Joking!!
I love it……it’s only 10 on the west coast folks…….c’mon buck up!
@JustSaying: Great idea. You can have the weekends.
@becca: Hired, but please leave any paint buckets at home. Thanks.
Is their an artist in the crowd to design Evan’s goghers caps……..maybe we could be “Evan’s Kids”…….or “Evan’s Drinking and Smokin’ Buddies”……..I like kids better cause that keeps it family friendly……
and not at all creepy.
scooper – you nailed it. the frustration is increasing because we are CLOSE to being a really good team. There aren’t a ton of missing ingredients right now, but they are big ones.
I didn’t realize until just now that we have one, ONE, lefty arm at OKC (Michael Ballard). Kiker and Young need to move fast – we’ll need them in pen next year.
EVAN – does the A.L. still have the 1:00 a.m. curfew rule, where an inning can’t start past that? I was trying to explain it to my 6 year old, and I hadn’t seen it come into play since I was in high school.
i agree with all the talk of us being a close to actual threat in the division. and i know lots of folks blame wash and JD…but for me, i think so much more of the blame is on tom hicks. but seeing as how late it is and scooper and jack daddy have been forcing me to drink beer, i will offer no evidence to back me up.
@ becca : I thought YOU were forcing ME to drink!
shh. i thnk hazing is a crime.
You’re right,Evan, the 6th tonite would have been a good spot for Holland but who know that yesterday? Today could have just as easily been postponed or called after 5 inn. That’s the problem with Holland being in the ML bullpen. When and how do you get him regular work and still manage the bullpen effectively. What’s the priority?
and we made it! good game. way to stay with it everyone.
We survived! Good night!
Hello Win Column!
A thing of beauty is a joy forever.
Seamheads of the world Unite
on the bright side, my important fantasy team (read big payout) just got 13 points from Frankie and I’m in a dog fight this week.
Night all.
@becca If you keep making so much sense then we’ll just have to let you have your own locker with your name engraved above it…..
McCarthy was great tonight. I really like what he has brought to the table this year. Now let’s hope he can stay healthy.
“see” everyone tomorrow night.
Good article. Its always a good idea to take your time and get advice from a professional about snoring.
