While Jeff Miller puts the finishing touches on the game story, please feel free to answer these questions amongst yourselves:
• At what point do you stop worrying if Brandon McCarthy is going to get hurt in a start and just expect him to be a reliable member of the rotation. It’s just four weeks, but he is 3-0 and has a respectable 4.33 ERA while running second on the staff behind Kevin Millwood in innings pitched. Not sure I’m there yet, but I’m getting closer.
• Repeat: If the Rangers can’t trust Luis Mendoza with an eight-run lead, when can they trust him?
• Understand there is a lot of frustration over Eddie Guardado’s struggles to this point, but I must remind of his 16-year track record vs. the last four weeks. So, given that, how long are you willing to give him to try and work his way out of it?
NEW FEATURE!!!
Lone Star of the Game: Brandon McCarthy’s sharp rain-interrupted five-inning outing in his first ever start against his original club would normally be good enough to win, but, who can ignore the grounds grew? They had to spread and remove the tarp a half dozen times (twice just to dump water and then replace it). I’m surprised none of them collapsed. That ain’t easy.
Shoot, why not add a second star: You guys. 122 comments on the live blog at game’s end! Outstanding work folks. I’m going to assume you all blew off big-time cocktail parties and fancy dinners to hang around The Corner all night. Whatever, I’m indebted to you for your participation and truly want to say thanks for a fun, if very long, night.
to be fair, evan, 122 comments in 5+ hours can’t be that remarkable. i mean, what else were we going to do? watch Rangers Insider for the 4th rerun for the night?
have fun in seattle. watch out for communicable diseases.
You couldn’t find a flight sometime in the afternoon tomorrow? I mean, it is almost 48 hours until the game Monday in Seattle starts…
Evan might be meeting Meg Ryan and be “Sleepless in Seattle.”
A good crew you have obviously found by visiting bars and Night Court. Baseball fans are the same all over. Unreasonable, slightly adled and loyal to the core.
It’s a good group. I will be in the stands tomorrow night.
I’m liking this O’Day guy. Maybe he is providing more positive leadership than Eddie. They gave Mendoza a 8 run lead and said “take us home.” He couldn’t but he didn’t walk anybody and he basically threw strikes. Give him another chance or three. He threw 22 pitches and got 3 outs with that one long ball and all those runs. Get him back on that horse in Seattle. The Rangers now have some good pieces down in the pen. Holland will start and somebody will join them. Feldman just needs to build up arm strength and stamina. He is a natural born starter. Some people just have that every 5th day rhythm. It is looking pretty good.
I had nothing better to do, anyway! Is it always this much fun? I’ve been out of town for a month and I’ve had to catch the games archived on MLB.TV. It was fun to be able to watch live and participate a little bit. Thanks!
I’ve seen enough of Mendoza. He’s not a major league pitcher, plain and simple.
How can Washington put him out there again?
I’m willing to give Guardado another two weeks.
I have to admit that I like Feldman as a starter. He just needs to be stretched out. I wish we would stop trying to make him a reliever. I’m ready to give up on Mendoza.
@scooper: you can use the interwebs even when you’re out of town!
Yeah, but I wasn’t watching the games live.
Guardado was wretched at the end of last year in Minnesota so this isn’t new for him. I think the guy is blown.
Mendoza needs to go to the minors when Benson comes off the DL. He needs another pitch that he can throw for outs.
Leave Feldman in the rotation until he stops getting it done
Guardado is probably done, but I’ll give him a bit more time because of his track record.
Get Mendoza out of here. I don’t even care if he becomes a servicable pitcher somewhere eelse. Its obvious he’s not going to become tthat pitcher here. Hitting a batter and walking a batter with two outs and an 8 run lead? Pathetic.
Agree about Feldman, he’s made for the rotation. Put Benson in the bullpen if you are that intent on keeping him. He’s better than Mendoza anyways.
