Bad news first because it begets the good news: RHP Thomas Diamond has gone on the DL at Triple-A Oklahoma City with a right shoulder strain. Couldn’t come at a worse time. It appeared at the start of this season that a combination of Rangers pitching struggles and Diamond’s full return to health from Tommy John surgery two years ago might just result in getting him to the majors. Well, that’s not happening any time soon.
The good news: LHP A.J. Murry, he of the 0.87 ERA at Double-A Frisco, has been promoted to replace Diamond. Murray. whose career has also been injury-plagued, allowed a run and two walks in his first outing of the season at Frisco, but none of each since. He is holding left-handed hitters to a .188 average and right-handers to a .111 mark thanks to a new side-arm delivery. Murray still hasn’t pitched on back-to-back days this season, but that might be the only thing keeping him from a spot in the Rangers’ bullpen. This promotion only moves him closer to that.
Evan, question about Murray….
He was up for a brief period last year, and had a pretty good start, if I recall, at Oakland. Then I don’t seem to rembember ever hearing from him again. I assume his start was as an emergency fill in to cover one of the ten million injuries they had last year, but I was kind of puzzled why he then faded away to obscurity.
Is he now a full time reliever, and is he projected now as a long man, setup, etc…?
Is his new delivery sort of the opposite of what they did with Scott Feldman?
Will Corey Young move up to Frisco to replace Murray?
