The Depot: Live Game Blog, News, Notes

Disclaimer: The live blog this evening is coming to you from the comfort of my faux leather office chair. The old stand-by, Campisi’s, should be showing up at the door any moment. Rangers baseball is coming up. So, if you have nothing better to do (now, there’s an endorsement if I’ve ever seen one), let’s talk some ball for the next couple of hours.

7:02: Josh Hamilton took live batting practice today and is now expected to go on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday at Round Rock. Might just be a one-game rehab, possibly two. The most important thing for Hamilton has been that he’s increased his workload every day this week and had no residual soreness the next day.

7:04: Also on the newsy, note-y front, RHP Neftali Feliz is not starting tonight for Triple-A Oklahoma City. Had a bit of shoulder soreness. After seeing a doctor in OKC this week who said there was no structural issue, Feliz was asked to take a couple of days off. So, for now, he’ll be skipped once through the rotation and then take his next turn. And now for the baseball.

7:20: So, 2B Ian Kinsler leads off with a walk, steals second and scores on Omar Vizquel’s single. The significance: He’s reached base to start the first 13 times now this season. The Rangers are 8-4 the first 12 times it happened. Also: It was only the fifth walk he’s taken on the road this season. Kinsler entered the game hitting .183 on the road, which ranked 85th among 91 qualifying AL players. Know who is currently last: Mark Teixeira (.159). Kinsler’s .246 road OBP just went up, but it was 84th among the 91 qualifiers to start the game.

7:31: The best line in the Rangers’ “Built For Fun” TV spots is the girl talking about ice cream in “little tiny helmets.” Now, I’m not sure if that was meant to be intentionally funny, but it makes me laugh.

7:47: Josh Lewin just called Jim Thome “The Thomenator.” Pardon me. Has anybody – anybody – ever heard him referred to as this. Or is just me?

7:55: Lewin on deep dish pizza now. Cites Pizzeria Uno. If there is a worst location for true deep dish pizza in Chicago, Uno, a national chain, would have to be it. This is two innings in a row of over-shtickiness. Josh, you’ve got a first-place team to discuss. Please, just let the game come to you.

7:58: But, wow, Tom Grieve ripping on Manny. Just TAG being TAG. It’s good stuff, the kind of strong baseball opinion that you can spend whole innings discussing.

8:14: I guess we should open it up for thoughts on Ian Kinsler’s bunt with David Murphy at third. Wasn’t a straight squeeze play (or if it was, it was a late start by Murphy). But I like it. Most important thing with a lead is to keep tacking on runs, whether it’s a big inning or one run at a time. You expect Kinsler to try and drive the ball for at least a sac fly. The bunt was just as effective and is the kind of thing that will make people think twice when playing defense against him in similar situations.

8:29: Good discussion point by Lewin, talking about pitching and defense making things fun. I’ve got to tell you the last week has been as much fun around the club as I’ve had. Games where every pitch matters, where things move quickly, where specific plays can be discussed for days afterward, how much fun is that? Seriously, there is no sport better to watch than good baseball and there is often nothing worse than bad baseball.

8:37: All: Kind of at mercy of the broadcast tonight to inform on Michael Young’s condition.  Disadvantage of not being with club.  Sorry.

8:43: In case you were out doing laundry, walking dog or greeting the pizza delivery man, Michael Young has lower back stiffness. The last four days have been tough with a lot of travel and alternating night and day games for four days. Young played all nine innings yesterday, then flew nearly four hours to Chicago. Don’t suspect it is serious.

8:51: Let’s assume Young needs a day or two on the back as he has in the past. Rangers could call up an infielder, most likely Joaquin Arias, for the next couple of days and send Greg Golson back to the minors. Arias is 3-for-3 tonight for Oklahoma City (at last check he was still in the game) and is hitting .370 over the last week.

9:34: Harrison at 98 pitches. Does he come out for ninth? I’d give him a shot.

9:39: No Post-Game Show tonight. We can just continue the Matt Harrison praise-a-thon right here. Maybe we can carry this thread above the 300 comment mark. That would make my comment pants very happy. But to be fair, I think there needs to be some more discussion of the teammwork between Harrison and Taylor Teagarden.

9:52: You know, this game was over so nice and quick (Rangers 6, White Sox 0), I could almost go out and enjoy the night, but that would require me having a life. So, nah, I’ll just cuddle up with the dog and marvel at the pitching juggernaut that is the Rangers. I will, however, be working on getting a tutorial from Eddie Guardado on shaving cream pie technique. I’m not even going to get into the velocity he threw his shaving cream pie vs. the velocity of his fastball. Who am I kidding, of course I will! Look for that coming on tape sometime soon.

OK, let’s start another win streak!

  • obagain

    Good news on hamilton.
Is feliz going to go on the dl or will they just give him extra rest?

  • JB

and lets keep harrison’s scoreless streak intact!

  • Dr. Pepper presents Batface McGee

    Let’s go with a 8-3 Rangers win.

  • Evan Grant

@obagain: Plan is just to skip one start with Feliz. No mention of DL at this point.

  • obagain

Kins with a walk and a steal, great way to start.

  • obagain

Then a single scores him. Very nice start.

  • becca

my gosh. i put the laundry in the washer and we’re already up 1-0. fantastic!

  • DallasManUFan

    MOTHER OF GOD.

Evan, did you see that A-Rod hit the first pitch he saw out of the yard for a three-run bomb?

I don’t have the words for how much I hate him, and the Yankees in general.

Nice start tonight for your First Place Texas Rangers…

  • obagain

That is why you wash before the game.

  • traydog

    running wild!

  • becca

    my timing is off tonight.

  • obagain

Didnt they teach you timing is everything?

  • scooper

@becca – it’s early! we won’t give up on you yet!

  • becca

they’re about to call the bullpen in the first! oh. well i guess the double play helped them.

  • traydog

    ouch…that’s an ender..

  • obagain

Now it’s our turn for a DP.

  • Evan Grant

@DallasManUFan: I was going to mention A-Rod’s first-pitch homer. To be honest, I’m much happier to read about that than whatever the latest allegation is.

  • becca

has salty said or seemed upset by the happy couple of teagarden and harrison? is he just happy to have a night off or does it seem to get to him? we’ve heard what wash has said…is salty buying it?

  • Jeffrey

    there’s our DP

  • obagain

That wasnt how I thought it would go but I’ll take it.

  • becca

and did you see that pick? know who helped get that going? do ya? it was that catcher. they call him teagarden.

  • obagain

The nam kid in hickory continues to impress.
In a spot start he goes 5 innings giving up 1 hit (a HR) with 5 K’s and 1 BB.

  • becca

    he was safe!

  • becca

is that normally scored an error?

  • obagain

That makes you appreciate davis at first.
He has made a couple of those look easy.

  • obagain

    Way to go teagarden!

  • traydog

    salami time

  • DallasManUFan

Is it too late to take Kinsler in the Bases-Loaded-Walk-Pool?

  • DallasManUFan

    Nevermind…

  • obagain

We got one and young has a good rbi chance here.

  • obagain

    Ment visquel

  • Evan Grant

@becca: There has never been a starting catcher happy about the backup being matched up with somebody as a personal catcher. The player always looks at it as if its some reflection on him, rather than a compliment to someone else. Put it this way: I can’t be all things to all people on this little blog. Same thing goes for a catcher; he can’t be all things to all his pitchers. If the Rangers win with the Harrison-Teagarden coupling, then everybody should be happy about it.

  • walrus

Evan, Rangers are 7-3 over the last 10, but so are the Angels. Are they healthy or are they doing that with some of their big guns still on the DL? Should we be worried? They’re a game and a half behind us.

  • obagain

If we keep scoring each inning I like our chances. :)

  • Jeffrey

I’m gonna say that until someone dethrones the Angels as the best in the West, we should always be worried about them

  • traydog

@evan: isn’t more common for a veteran pitcher to have a personal catcher? i can’t recall a situation like harrison-teagarden where a young pitcher just kind of fell into this. seems like in the past it has been a veteran pitcher actually requesting a pairing.

  • scooper

@evan – I’ve never even heard Josh say it before.

  • scooper

@traydog: wash said he wanted teagarden to be more than just a “backup”; I believe he said in spring training that teagarden would catch once or twice a week. he helped get harrison straight in that one game and no one has scored off of him since, so why change? it’s just a way to do what he wanted to do anyway.

  • becca

@evan, i was with you until you said you can’t be all things to all people on this little blog. hogwash!

  • Jeffrey

OT: @evan, what is your gameday routine when you’re watching the action from home? I’m guessing it’s a little different than being at the ballpark…

  • obagain

Scooper. This give teagarden the impression he is an important part of the team even if he only starts 1 game a week.
    I like the thinking.

  • becca

i am happy that TAG is talking about throwing up. we don’t get that every game.

  • traydog

@scooper: gotcha..not suggesting a change at all..just wondering how common it is for a young pitcher to be paired with a personal catcher.

  • traydog

@evan: heard TAG mentioning canseco. i was wondering what your impression was of Juiced when it came out. did you think it was bs or that it had some validity?

  • scooper

@evan: is it bad etiquette to answer a question that was directed at you? If so, I apologize for my many lapses.

  • AJM

Expecting Lewin to actually talk about the game is like expecting Hank Blalock to stop trying to pull everything. It is reasonable and would be great, but is completely unrealistic.

Here, btw, is a great parody of Lewin/Grieve by an M’s blogger who caught too many of their broadcasts on MLB Extra Innings:

    http://www.lookoutlanding.com/2007/7/24/4140/13406

  • Evan Grant

@traydog: I think in general it is more common for veterans to have personal catchers. But it’s been tried with all levels of pitchers. More often than not, though, it doesn’t work and you don’t remember those experiments. I mean outside of Steve Carlton-Tim McCarver and Greg Maddux-Anybody but Javy Lopez, I can’t think of a whole bunch of examples at all.

  • obagain

Hickory played a double header today.
Here are the era’s of the pitchers that saw action.
    Font 1.89
    Hamburger 1.64
    neveraz 2.16
    In the second game
    Nam 1.10
    Tufts 2.00
It doesnt get much better than that.

  • Evan Grant

@scooper: It’s never bad etiquette to jump in the conversation here. I love our little community.

  • scooper

@evan – thanks! I was starting to feel bad!

  • becca

hickory has the best picher names in the system. fyi.

  • Ryans Dad

    Evan
How much longer does Davis have before he runs out of leash?

  • traydog

    that’s gonna piss harrison off!

  • obagain

Small ball, score any way you can!

  • scooper

if anyone can take one on the butt and live to tell the story, it’s teagarden.

  • DallasManUFan

Evan, I just wanted to thank you for inspiring me to order Scalini’s tonight…Rangers, beer, pizza. Nice little Friday night going.

  • Worls

@AJM – You may want to get the MLB package. I currently live in Florida, so I watch all of the Ranger games on it. Trust me, the TAG/Lewin combo is so much better than anyting else out there. I hate not getting the Ranger home broadcasts all of the time.

  • becca

ha. think harrison is gonna start playing bean ball now? at least it was just his bottom.

  • Evan Grant

@Jeffrey: Routine at home today was: Pick up dog at my adopted granny’s home, sleep for several hours, order delivery, and sit in front of TV. It’s glamor city over here.

  • DallasManUFan

@scooper – …I am doing everything in my power to avoid offensive post…time for me to scoot over to grubesismyleader.com and post it there….

  • becca

    don’t forget radio interviews.

  • traydog

@worls: agree wholeheartedly…you don’t do san diego charger play-by-play as well as mlb if you’re terrible…

  • obagain

Just like I imagined it evan. :)

  • becca

man, as much as rangers pitchers have pissed me off (can i say that?) i never agree with booing them.

    stay classy chicago.

  • scooper

@becca: he has to stand up for his personal catcher!

  • DallasManUFan

Evan, you don’t have your butler or housekeepers take care of the dog while you’re gone? I’m shocked.

  • becca

@evan: isn’t that kinda what they were/are trying to do with hamilton? he bunted some in spring training…i don’t remember if he’s done it yet during the season.

  • scooper

@evan: it was a super play, the kind a smart ballplayer makes. what’s your dog’s name, what breed, and how old. mine is Bernard, terrior/schnauzer, 8 1/2 yrs.

  • Evan Grant

@traydog: I read “Juiced” because I had to. Didn’t care for it for the same reasons Grieve mentioned on the air. Canseco has had no change of heart and is not concerned about the good of the game. He was the worst steroid cheat in the game’s history and you got the feeling he wrote the book because he was basically blackballed. That said, it is amazing, as Lewin mentioned, that so much of what he alleged has proven to be true. It’s amazing. And it is sad.

  • obagain

I have a 6 week old mini schnauzer at my feet right now.
My wife wants a dog and the dog wont leave my feet.

  • traydog

    lotta bad wood tonight.

  • obagain

    I love these quick innings.

  • becca

7 pitch inning? i heart that almost as much as steak. and bacon.

  • scooper

@obagain: aw, c’mon! you know you love it! what’s his name?

  • DallasManUFan

My hound (dachschund) is taking up all the foot space on my ottoman right now…and remarkably enough, not that big a deal.

  • Evan Grant

@becca: I always thought the Hamilton thing was more ruse than anything else, but, yes, it was designed to at least make people think twice before over-shifting against him.

@Scooper: OK, first the disclaimer. The dog is a rescue. She is a black lab/spaniel/cur mix (we think). She came with the name Princess. I am comfortable enough with my (slovenly) masculinity to leave her name alone. But I do call her P-Nutty often. Also recently found a stray chihuahua wandering towards certain death on Northwest Hwy. Currently looking to find a home for her since nobody has claimed her. Have taken to calling her Nacho.

  • traydog

what i love about the ranger staff these days is the fact that they don’t nibble around the plate. they attack the hitter…only real nibbling i noticed was benson in detroit.

  • DallasManUFan

    Likes Ranger baseball – check
    Likes steak – check
    Likes bacon – check

  • becca

i’ve got a cat. and no, i’m not a crazy cat lady. but she is named dooley. so every time dooley in dallas comes on to comment, i instinctly have to look and see if she’s on the computer in the other room. she never is. but she is usually drinking out of the toilet.

  • scooper

    @becca – at least you’re not a vegetarian!

  • Ryans Dad

Think we are gonna see C.J tonight? What’s the over/under on pitches?

  • obagain

Her name is geegee, some soap opera person.
    My wife is into those.

  • scooper

carrasco looks good, but we’re up 5-0 and harrison is dealing.

  • becca

    so…why’s young out?!?!

  • obagain

Can you find out why MY is out of the game?

  • Jack Daddy

was giving sons a bath and missed the kinsler bunt. Saw sacrifice on CBS Sportsline and was wondering if a squeeze. Knew I’d get the skinny here. Nice work.

And, yes, I love it. But of course I do – Ian is the greatest living human being walking the face of the earth.

  • scooper

    Uh, oh! Is Mikey OK?

  • Jeffrey

is the radar gun “inflated” in Chicago like it was in Seattle? They just clocked Harrison at 94 (so says Nadel)

  • Ryans Dad

Who knows with some of the decisions our old school leader makes.

  • scooper

@JackDaddy: you are right again! Ian is the best!

  • obagain

Harrison can hit the mid 90′s.
    Another quick inning.

  • Ryans Dad

Our starting pitching makes me wanna cry. I almost can’t believe what I’m watching.

  • walrus

the gun on MLB showed him at 95 a couple times in the 5th. he seems to get stronger as he goes along.

  • obagain

He is at 52 or so pitches, he is just getting warmed up.

  • Evan Grant

@Jeffrey: Seattle, Baltimore and Oakland are the parks I’m familiar with that have reputations for higher-than-normal gun readings. Don’t recall Chicago ever being mentioned as being way out of range. And in Baltimore, I know there were a couple of Harrison pitches listed at 95 mph.

  • dic

Evan: How could you forget Doug Mirabelli and Tim Wakefield? On a serious note, where does Josh bat when he’s activated from the DL. I like the top three we’ve seen lately, and would like to see Josh at four, leaving the top three as is.

  • scooper

@evan: what? you’re not going to tweet Josh to get the info?

  • traydog

    nice f-bomb.

  • Ryans Dad

Davis needs some help. He is swinging at horrible pitches.

  • obagain

Speaking of seattle, they are down 7-0 in the 5th.

  • scooper

@obagain: thanks! you just made my evening even more pleasant!

  • walrus

bottom of the order starting to hit. good job teagarden.

  • scooper

nobody’s mentioned it yet, so I will. Josh says stiff lower back for MY.

  • Jack Daddy

@Jeffrey – I was at game last Sunday and Matty H hit 94 several times. From the stands, if you didn’t know the history of the pitchers, you would have absolutely came away from that game thinking Harrison had the better stuff and was the better pitcher. Danks hit 91 a couple of times but mostly sat at 90. I’m not sure if he was off that night or if that’s just how hard he throws. If it is, and he added the cutter after landing in Chicago, then I understand why JD traded him (though he does have a nasty change).

  • Ryans Dad

    Another bunt?

  • walrus

chicago announcers are saying Young left with back stiffness. If it were to be anything serious, who fills in at 3rd?

  • Greg

Harrison had a fastball clocked at 97.7 on the iPhone MLB app, which uses MLB Gameday data. That can’t be accurate, right?

  • Ryans Dad

    Should’ve bunted

  • James

Howdy… sorry im late – looks like i missed five runs!

  • Jack Daddy

you call up German Duran for 2 days (and send Golson down) until Hammy comes off DL

  • James

    oops six

  • scooper

he’s had back stiffness before and I don’t believe that it was ever anything more than a day or 2.

  • Jeffrey

@obagain, @Evan, @Jack Daddy, thanks for the heads-up. I’ve watched Harrison pitch before, but I didn’t know he could consistently hit the mid-90s (not that I’m complaining)

  • James

Im ignorant when it comes to minors… but don’t they have a limit for call-ups before they have to clear waivers? whats that limit

  • obagain

Could be we are up big so they are picking spots to give him some rest so the back doesnt get worse.

  • Red

@Evan – What do you think about Norm’s thought on the Rangers having Erik Bedard on the radar?

  • obagain

jeffery, that is why when he was struggling early I tried to get people to give him time.
Lefties that throw mid 90′s dont grow on trees.
You think atlants is kicking themselves after watching the start harrison and elvis are having?

  • Ryans Dad

Red, that will never happen. Too many teams will be offering at that guy. We are in their division and there will be too many other teams making good offers.

  • obagain

Red, they would want a huge package for him and those would be the kids you will be facing for the next 10 years when you trade within the division.

  • Red

Norm’s contention is Rangers have the better prospects

  • scooper

I find it hard to believe they would trade an “ace” within the division.

  • Ryans Dad

Pitching prospects would have to be involved and Daniels cannot afford to trade another one of those until the Rangers have some playoff cred.

  • Jack Daddy

Jeffrey – caught me by surprise too. I knew he could dial it up to 94 but he hit muc more consistently that I knew he had it in him. He is definitely throwing harder than I thought he had it in him.

Jeffrey – Each player has 3 options before he has to be exposed to waivers. Runs for whole year (ie. not 3 times). Duran can be run up and down as much as they want, because he is on 40 man roster. However, he can’t be sent down and brought back up with 10 days (I think its 10). But you can send down the day after calling up.

  • Ryans Dad

I think Norm forgot his medication this morning.

  • Jack Daddy

sorry, meant to address that last in respone to James.

  • Red

He said you wouldn’t have to touch Holland, Feliz, or Perez or Smoak… I find it hard to believe myself but Norm knows best.

  • obagain

    Harrison needed that.

  • scooper

luv the DP and luv Vizquiel!

  • James

    wow gotta love it

  • becca

omar is looking quite spritely in all of his 42 years.

  • obagain

When elvis was a kid ( a few months ago)
Do you think he ever invisioned being part of a DP with vizquel?
That had to be special for him.

  • James

6 innings and only 70 pitches… great job… CG maybe?

  • Evan Grant

@Red: Sure they would have him on the radar. But that’s a long, long way away. Seriously, talk about it in July. M’s were only a half-game out entering tonight. Trading days for them are a way away. But let me say this: If the Rangers are in the race and if they choose to be buyers, they will be able to match any club on any offer. That’s part of having the deepest farm system in baseball.

  • Greg

@Red – Norm was crazy to even suggest that. Of course Seattle wouldn’t mind trading Bedard here. They’re get 3 or 4 really good prospects while the Rangers would have him for 3 months. Meanwhile the Rangers would potentially face those same guys for the next 6 years or so. It’s the Rangers that say no to any deal for Bedard unless Seattle takes Mike Ballard, Adam Fox and Nate Gold.

  • scooper

Seattle knows our guys (Wak, Adair), but I still don’t know if they would trade Bedard within the division. also, has Norm said why they would trade Bedard in the first place? it’s not like they are out of the race!

  • Jeffrey

I love it that the Rangers have been scoring without hitting “as many” homers lately. Like Evan said, proving that you can knock in 1 run at a time inning after inning wears a team down more than anything.

  • Ryans Dad

    Good Point Greggo

  • obagain

Seattle down 10-0 in the sixth.
They are still in the race right now but they are fading fast.

  • scooper

@evan: vizquiel at 3rd and Arias as backup, or Arias at 3rd?

  • Greg

Unfortunately Norm doesn’t know best anymore. Most of his baseball/Rangers ideas this year have been off the wall insane.

  • Red

Norm thinks Seatle will start decline fast. And Bedard is in a contract year and has no interest in resigning with the Mariners.

  • becca

would they even bring up someone for experience, or could vizquel be an everyday guy for a few games? i guess experience for someone else in the minors is important. i don’t even know. i’m just going to go check on my laundry.

  • Jack Daddy

Bedard is a F.A. after 2010, which fits the profile that you would want (have an extra year of control – like Teixeira two years ago). There is another name on that list that you might pay attention to (though they have a 2010 option like we do Padilla) — that’s Brandon Webb.

Arizona is having bad start, I’m sure $$ is an issue, like everything else in Phoenix right now. I would move Beavan, Kiker, Betre and Teegarden for Webb. Not sure if they would do it. Probably not.

  • Red

    Don’t want Webb… Arm issues

  • scooper

Man, I’m getting old! I can’t remember where I read/saw this, but SOMEONE (JD?) said that Webb would be the perfect ace for the Rangers.

  • Jeffrey

@ALL, I’m not watching the game (don’t get it down here in SA, have to listen to it on MLB radio), so based on how Harrison’s looking, if he keeps it up will they let him go the whole game?

  • Evan Grant

@scooper, becca: If they have to put Vizquel in the starting lineup, they need an extra infielder. My guess is that just like they’ve done with Max Ramirez and Golson in that spot, they’d use the minor leaguer as insurance.

  • Ryans Dad

This year is not the right time to be buyers anyway. Let this chemistry cook for another year maybe two. Then we can start moving into free agent talk.

  • obagain

For those not paying attention, there is a tornado warning for montague and some more storms trying to build, be careful.

  • Red

@Evan – what happened that the trainer had to come out to talk to Harrison?

  • scooper

If he stays out of trouble and has quick innings, sure.

  • walrus

Cruz is having a bad night. 3 breaking balls out of the zone for the second time. missed all 6 badly.

  • becca

harrison is still looking filthy. i know i should be embracing it, but WOW who would have thought that most of our starters would still be pitching in the 7th inning!

  • scooper

@Ryan’s Dad: basically, I agree. but, if we are in contention and can get an ace-type who will be here in 2010 (when everyone thinks we will contend) I’d have to seriously consider it.

  • scooper

And there is still Ben Sheets.

  • Jack Daddy

Greg: Bedard has next year on his K. But I wouldn’t trade blue chip guys for him. 6 months ago, Seattle would have gladly dumped that K. I’m not a believer in trading blue chippers for pitchers, unless they are one of a handful of true aces. And I mean handful. Think 10 or so (Lackey, Felix, Verlander (maybe), Greinke (jeez, if we could have pried him away), Beckett (maybe), Halladay, Webb, Peavy (though a buddy of mine is tight with him and the guy can’t lift his arm for 2 days after his stars). That might be it for the veteran F.A. types. Harden is better than all of them, but wouldn’t touch him. Zambrano has warning flags. The other guys I like are young guys and would never hit market (i.e., Hamels, Billingsley, Josh Johnson, Gallerdo, etc.

  • Red

You have to consider everything. Don’t forget Ruben Mateo.

  • scooper

@becca: these last couple of weeks just emphasize how important good pitching is (and defense!).

  • obagain

He is at 83 pitches so he could finish but chances are he will finish the game.
He could get a few quick outs and make it, I would love to see that.
FYI his era is now at 5.08.

  • Jack Daddy

    that would be gallardo

  • Red

Davis had a 3-0 count and he strikes out???

  • Jeffrey

    seriously chris davis?

  • Jack Daddy

wow, take the maybe off of verlander. heeeee’s baaaccck.

  • scooper

@JackDaddy: don’t tease us like that! what do you know about Verlander that we don’t?

  • Ryans Dad

I love Chris Davis, but he needs help. Somebody please help him. Please!

  • becca

scooper!!! they just mentioned you on the broadcast!

  • becca

i didn’t know that you played fantasy football with the boys in the broadcast booth.

  • Jack Daddy

Evan – i assumed Duran b/c I keep thinking about the talk on Arias shoulder. I know he started late in the Spring at 3B, but I assumed that was a ploy to drive trade interest. But I guess you are saying that Viz would start at 3B and Arias would be the backup for the weekend.

What has been the report on Arias’ throws at OKC? Is he playing ss or 2B?

  • Ryans Dad

    Becca, heard that

  • obagain

A quick inning here and his era is under 5 witch seemed impossible a few weeks ago.

  • scooper

    yeah! and they were laughing!

  • Evan Grant

@All: I don’t want to discourage anybody on the ambitious trade talk, but if the M’s were to fall quickly, the bigger problem in consummating a trade within the division is that the Rangers would not want to see the guys they’d have to deal 19 or 20 times a year. And let’s just call it like it is: If you are going to acquire a legitimate ace this season, be prepared to surrender two from this group (Smoak/Davis, Teagarden/Salty/Max) plus pitching.

  • Red

I think he needs to be sent down. I could deal with the strike outs if he would mix in some hits.

  • becca

and murphy and teagarden have both hit tonight. those have to be considered the other 2 liability at bats. i don’t understand what davis is trying to do.

  • Ryans Dad

Hey Evan- enjoyed you on the Hardline today.

  • scooper

    @becca: you didn’t know? I kick ***, too!

  • obagain

Tough play but kins has to make it.

  • Jack Daddy

josh just mentioned he went all the way on a 2 hitter. That’s 16 straight scoreless innings. Was responding to my own post when I said I would MAYBE trade for him.

  • obagain

    Davis calling off kins?

  • scooper

    @evan: good point!

  • Brett in SD

    Evan,
In light of the Manny fiasco, and the fact the Dodgers command a five-game lead in the NL West, what are the odds the Dodgers and Rangers may have increased their trade chatter since the Dodgers have an outfield spot to fill and the Rangers seem to have a surplus of outfielders?

  • Red

    that was a close 1

  • Ryans Dad

Call me crazy but a 95+mph lefty hitting his spots has “ace” written all over him. Who cares what his pedigree is.

  • obagain

Red, he has a hit tonight. He does mix some in but it is getting close to time to send him down and build some confidence.

  • Jack Daddy

Evan’s right. You don’t trade that kind of package in the division (unless its Lackey and he’s hurt — do you really feel goood there?) and you definitely don’t do it for Bedard.

You’re trade pickup for next year is Millwood if he keeps this up. Remember 9 weeks ago, we were hoping he didn’t pitch 180 innings and vest?

If we make a trade, I’m thinking we just rescue some down on their luck team that has an owner sucking wind in this meltdown and basically absord a K without giving prospects(the only flaw to this is that our owner fits that same description!!)

  • Red

consistency and command and tuff is what ace projection is all about.

  • Jack Daddy

    Here’s on for you:

Josh Hamilton for Kershaw? Would ya? That’s good baseball talk. Let me hear your thoughts.

  • Ryans Dad

Davis needs to get his head out of his…uh glove.

  • scooper

    @JackDaddy: yes.
does anyone have harrison’s pitch count?

  • obagain

It wasnt pretty but no runs.
He is at 98 pitches, do you let him finish it out?

  • Red

1 hit 3 strike outs. Umm not a good ratio.

  • becca

    134ish

  • Red

Dodgers would never do that. It would have to be Hamilton and something else.

  • walrus

yeah maybe the Dodgers would trade for Andruw Jones.

  • Ryans Dad

I say let him finish. I cannot stomach seeing CJ tonight. We ate Mexican earlier.

  • obagain

Jack daddy, that is a tough one.
I would say yes but I believe you always go after pitching.

  • scooper

@obagain: I let him go out in the ninth w/ Frankie warming up.

  • obagain

A nice long inning would help harrison here.

  • dic

Hamilton for Kershaw, and I’d throw Feliz in too

  • becca

    oh. maybe not.

  • James

Milly has an option for next year if he pitches 180, right?

  • JohnnyMel

Evan -Given the Rangers pitching prowess lately, should there be a pool for when the Rangers’ pitcher gives up their first hit/run? Seems their almost as scarce as Ranger home runs lately. And I mean that as a good thing.

  • Evan Grant

@Brett in SD: I don’t think the Rangers would consider trading Marlon Byrd at this point and he would seem to be the best fit in L.A. Maybe they could talk about Andruw Jones. Uh, maybe not. Think the Rangers are currently in sit-back-and-watch-what-happens mode. There is no pressing urgency to make a deal. They could use some relief help, but so could everybody in the league.

  • Jack Daddy

You definitely let him finish it out. This is what Nolan has been preaching. he’s at 98 and hasn’t been threatened all night. they have one well hit ball. He can go 115-120 pitches.

BTW, Kins dropped that ball on purpose, just so Matty H. could fight through it and develop as a pitcher. Another reason why Kinsler is the best player in baseball.

  • obagain

    DIC, are you crazy?
Maybe kiker or poveada but not feliz

  • scooper

didn’t we try to get Kershaw last year? I don’t think the Dodgers will trade him.

  • Red

Feliz is considered better than Holland. No way do I trade him. He’s your # 1 prospect.

  • Evan Grant

    @James: Millwood’s option vests at 180 innings.

  • alan

Kershaw hasn’t shown nearly enough to trade Josh for to this point…I don’t think we need to trade proven players for “potential”…and Kershaw has had “potential” for awhile

  • becca

hmm. they said o’day was warming up. i think it wouldn’t kill me to see cj.

    but on a short leash.

  • gordosan

Bedard isn’t going happen. I should probably extend that to any major trade for a rent a pitcher. We are going to build from within the system. With the salary structure that Hicks has given him; Daniels knows he has to build this team around the young talent we have in the system.

Evans: Tell us about Harrison tonite. This is the first time that Harrison and dominant performance could be used in the same sentence.

  • Ryans Dad

This is good baseball that is fun to watch.

  • Jack Daddy

dic – I’ve seen Feliz and Kershaw in person. I don’t know that I’d trade Feliz for Kershaw straight up (thought I probably would since he’s a lefty). I sure would add him to Hamilton.

James – I don’t think its an option on Milly. His year vests if he hits 180

  • scooper

    can’t beat it!

  • becca

    here comes harrison!

  • James

    here he comes! Go matty

  • obagain

That’s ok. It gave harrison a chance to catch his breath.

  • Jack Daddy

meant sure WOULDN’T add him to Hammilton.

If none of you have seen Feliz, you can’t appreciate how effortless he looks pitching. Don’t we swayed by his control problems this year. The guy is filty.

Btw, say a few Novinas tonight when you go to bed that “shoulder stiffness” doesn’t translate to rotator cuff surgery. I swear, that would throw me into an unrecoverable depression. Hurley was painful enough. You just rarely come back from RC.

  • Red

Kershaw is a stud… If you went to the Dodgers with a Hamilton for Kershaw deal they would tell you F’ off.

  • Evan Grant

@gordosan: I don’t have a whole lot more to say about Harrison than you guys have all discussed. He’s worked quickly. That’s huge. Steve Busby discussed on pre-game show. Tom Grieve discussed during broadcast. Makes fielders happy and alert, makes batters uncomfortable. It’s been the singles biggest change in the staff. It should be noted that Harrison did have a complete game shutout of Oakland last September, too. The guy has ability.

  • James

Well I’m sure glad Millwood, even though its a contract year, decided to set the tone for these young guys…

  • Ryans Dad

    Ugghhh

  • Red

    2 more outs

  • James

    very nice

  • Jack Daddy

That was nice!! Sit down Fields. Matty H, are you growing into a MAN before our eyes?

  • becca

i sure hope he gets through this. cj’s warming up. and i said earlier that i’d be ok with him coming in. but just seeing him in the pen, well, it didn’t feel good.

  • James

    1 more

  • Evan Grant

@Jack Daddy: Rotator cuff not as traumatic as once was. But again, we’re going WAY, WAY, WAY down the line. For now it’s one skipped start for Feliz. No DL.

  • Ryans Dad

James make no mistake about it, Milly did not set this tone. Nolan Ryan did. Millwood is being lead and there is nothing wrong with that.

  • obagain

That was scary. Last thing we need is a line drive at harrison.

  • Red

1 more Matty. Boy the Tiexiera trade looks like a bank robbery. What’s Tex’s average .192 still?

  • Jack Daddy

Evan – can you ask Matt next time you talk to him whether he mentally “filed away” Ozzie’s comments about him after the last game, where he essentially played down his start and his stuff?

  • becca

it’d be great if he single-handedly got all 3 outs this inning.

  • James

Ryan, I do agree with you on that. But there is no doubt that the young guys are gonna look at what the vets are doing.

  • Ryans Dad

    Awesome Awesome job Matty

  • scooper

    Great game!

  • Red

    That a boy Matty!

  • becca

a complete game and a shut out. by the RANGERS!

  • obagain

    Great game!
His era is all the way down to 4.79

  • James

Do you ever let salty catch harrison again?

  • Red

I’ve always felt Teagarden was this team’s best option at catcher. Salty might be able to rake supposedly, but I want defense first with my catcher. The rest of the lineup can hit.

  • gordosan

Feliz will need to be shut-down until his shoulder inflamation calms down, and then will need to start on a much more serious shoulder stablization program to prevent further problems.

  • giantbenmav

salty does not catch harrison, unless teargarden’s arm falls off …

  • Jack Daddy

    I’m proud of Matty. Awesome!!

Evan – I hear you on the Rotator Cuff, but I think of Justin Thompson. I was also a high school buddy of Chris Holt and it ruined his career. I remember the doctors telling him that you can try to strenghten the muscles with weight traning, etc. but that the socket will never be as tight again. just scares the bejeezus out of me when I hear shoulder soreness.

Enjoyed the game, IC crew. Good stuff.

  • obagain

Rangers winning, seattle loseing and oakland loseing.
Everyone needs to be a KC fan tonight.

  • JB

So now Matty is giving Franky a run for his money with the scoreless inning streak – after tonight its 19 innings in a row.

  • giantbenmav

Salty has been the better of the two … his defense has been pretty good this year … teargarden and harrison just click, you cannot argue with it …

New record on the # of comments… Congratulations Evan.

Side note, I HATE trades when you are giving up such young and promising prospects for an ace. It took SOOOO long for this organization to get so deep, keep the prospects and play this year for a so-so maybe good year and really look forward to next year and beyond.

  • becca

  • Red

  • Evan Grant

@Ryans Dad: Glad to have you. Hope you won’t be a stranger.

  • scooper

    @James: Never!
@Auditor: we’re going to have to trade some of the prospects, they can’t all play in Arlington. and we don’t contend often. if we’re in it and can get ace-type pitching, go for it!
@Evan: this has to be more fun than writing for a newspaper, right? it’s fun to talk baseball with Rangers’ junkies during the game!

  • Ryans Dad

Hmmmmm, might have a good point JB…hint Evan!

  • Chris

I agree. Trade not a soul unless they are aged veterans. Let this team develop as they are and see where it goes in 2009.

  • becca

how nice of a guy. saying yes sir and everything. it is fun to see any ranger pictcher throw a complete game. but one who shook off some missteps, got confidence back. it’s great. you have to root for guys like that.

  • Ryans Dad

I’ve never met a stranger sir

  • scooper

back to Feliz for a second. As a general rule of thumb, I wouldn’t trade a pitcher that Nolan Ryan gets legitimately excited about.

  • Red

Mental make up. Its what pitchers, Quarterbacks and NBA Superstars have to have.

  • Ryans Dad

    And talent Red, and talent.

  • Red

Back to tonite. No question that the Harrison/Teegarden connection deserves discussion. I’m impressed enough to suggest that Tee. should be given an opportunity to catch McCarthy in addition to Harrison for a couple of outings, and see what the results are.

  • Jeffrey

Great job tonight crew. I’d like to think that we all had a hand in the victory tonight…

Evan, great job of coaching us.

Thanks for the great convo everyone. See you tomorrow

  • JSickles

Good stuff, Evan. Keep it up!

  • giantbenmav

when is it time to just believe that Harrison is a solid major league pitcher … he had what, 9 wins last year … the guy has had 3 very good games in a row, he does not have the best stuff, but he just looks like a major league pitcher … a very solid 3/4 kind of guy … with room to grow …

  • Red

Evan, I have a question. I remember McCarthy throwing 95 when he was with the White Sox. And now he barely hits 90. Is that due to the arm problems he’s had in the past or to the tweaking of his mechanics?

  • scooper

@Gordosan: McCarthy/Teagarden is an interesting thought. You have to be careful with Salty (if he is going to be your guy), but Taylor deserves a chance.

  • JB

Didn’t the great Greg Maddux have his own personal catcher in Atlanta?

  • becca

@gordosan: i concur. i mean, if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. if teagarden could just wake his bat up a little more, salty’s going to have real competition.

  • scooper

I don’t recall who it was earlier that mentioned The Trade, but: Elvis, Salty, Matt, Feliz . . . looks pretty good!

  • becca

and i bet eddie felt bad about the extreme face smash. matt’s gonna get a hug for sure in the clubhouse from everyday eddie for sure.

  • Red

hey Teagarden showed he could hold his own with the bat last year.

  • giantbenmav

it is hard to justify taking salty out of the lineup … he is playing very well right now .. if McCarthy continues to struggle then you should consider matching him up with Teagarden … but he has pitched OK this season, I think he just needs more time on the mound … he is still pretty young, and has had a couple of rough years regarding injuries …

    1st place texas rangers

  • scooper

If this is really Taylor making this kind of difference (rather than Matt just pitching well), I don’t care about his bat. If a catcher can make that kind of difference in a pitching staff, he’s worth his weight in gold. this team will always be able to hit.

I wonder if we give catchers too much credit sometimes. I know we don’t hear much about catchers screwing up pitchers.

  • JB

It just dawned on me that Harrison’s last start was also against the WhiteSox. So that’s 14 scoreless innings in a row against the same team in back-to-back starts.

  • JSickles

Hmmm. Road trip to see Josh in Round Rock? Weatherman says sunny and 90 there on Sunday. Could be a great day.

  • giantbenmav

could be more than a promising reliever … could be up in the majors soon …

  • Red

Yeah but it makes a huge difference. Look at Pudge. He didn’t work with anyone here. But he did with Florida and Detroit and he went to a world series with both teams.

  • becca

@scooper: i agree. but the powers that be seem to really be happy with salty. and i think they don’t want to upset him.

how many decisions are made on ego/keeping someone happy? yeah, it’s still too early to knock him out of starting. i’m not saying that. sheesh. again. i don’t even know.

  • giantbenmav

you are right JB … 14 innings of scoreless ball against any team is pretty impressive …

  • Ryans Dad

On a side note, I think the return of Hamilton might spell the end for Davis, for at least right now.

Hey, now! Catchers can be extremely important. but they are like umpires, when they do their job well, you barely notice them. Salty’s been doing fine, and I think most of the Harrison stuff is just Matt pitching better. I’m just saying … if it IS Taylor doing a great job, you’re doing the team a disservice if you don’t give him a chance.

  • Auditor

IMO The Tex trade is the exact reason you DO NOT trade at the deadline. Honestly, or at least statistically speaking (this is baseball after all), how often does trading to help you make the playoff/go deep really pay off? The only really good trade was Randy Johnson by Houston. Amazing like 10-1 and 1.9 era run.

The Tex trade, Gagne Trade, and the opposite or flip trade to trade “up” Mccarty for Danks and Eaton for Young. Till JD has a better track record when he is trying to trade to improve the team I cannot agree with a trade what so ever. At least not prospects…. now current starts I would consider (Davis, Byrd, Murphy, Salty)….

  • giantbenmav

so much of pitching is confidence … if Matt gains one iota of confidence with Teagarden at the plate then there you have it; a personal catcher …

Salty has been playing well … he has handled Millwood … and he has been doing ok if you ask me …

  • Ryans Dad

Red, Pudge did take some heat for not working well with the pitchers here. Then he left and our pitchers didn’t get any better. He has wound up in the playoff’s almost every year since then.

  • scooper

@Auditor: everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

  • giantbenmav

Daniels won the Tex trade … Daniels won the Boston trade … he lost the two before that … he won his last two and has drafted well … to me that is a winning streak … JD still has a lot to prove, but his arrow is pointing up if you ask me …
