I hate to run out on y’all after we set a record last night with all those cheeky comments and prescient questions, but Bowling For Soup calls. So, I’m going to leave the live blog to you tonight. If you are around, please feel free to comment and converse.
A couple of quick notes:
• Omar Vizquel is getting his first career start at third base tonight for Michael Young. Vizquel did start a very nice double play from third after Young left.
• Young said the infield was very wet last night and that he slipped on it when trying to make a diving play. First thought: Was there a little White Sox gamesmanship involved? The White Sox have had trouble shutting down the running game this season (opponents are 29-for-31) against them, so maybe they soaked the infield to try and slow things down a bit.
• Speaking of Young, the Rangers have done OK in those rare games he’s missed since he became the team leader in 2004 (after the Alex Rodriguez trade). The Rangers are 11-9 when he doesn’t start, but only 9-9 when he doesn’t play at all.
• Tonight is OF David Murphy’s first start of the year against a left-hander. He last started vs. a lefty on August 5, 2008, the night before his season was ended by a knee injury.
• Chris Davis, who has struck out in 25 consecutive starts and 26 of 27 starts this season, is getting a day off. Davis is just 4-for-28 (.143) vs. lefties this season and he has struck out 17 times in 28 at-bats against them. He has struck out in each of his last five at-bats vs. lefties. Hank Blalock is starting at first. Blalock hasn’t been much better vs. lefties. He is 6-for-32 (.188), including just four hits in his last 28 at-bats against them. Blalock has not taken a walk against a lefty this season. His .212 OBP against lefties ranks 100th of 102 qualifying players.
• On the other hand, DH Andruw Jones ranks third in the AL in OBP vs. lefties at .517.
OK, you are on your own.
on the WGN broadcast, Hawk says “sit back, relax, and strap it down”
Good to see the Hawk working blue tonight…
“thome 0 for his last 15″ sounds so nice to the ears.
howdy all
nice walk elvis – gotta get danks pitch count up
happy rangers baseball to you, sir
You think that kid knows he can buy a ball for $4?…
whew i think he was out
Whatever happend to diving back into first? Jeez, that was close.
Millwood will have to go strong to take this one because I don’t fully trust Padilla tomorrow. We need two out of three if a sweep is not there.
fair ball ump!
wow we got screwed there
tom b! don’t give up on padilla! that’s my boy! and even if he doesn’t pitch well, he will surely cause a few goose eggs on the white sox batters. which is just as good.
he did have a pretty good start last time out, didn’t he?
yes! he should have gotten the win, but got the no decision.
So, maybe he have figured some stuff out – I have faith in him.
Between this, the Mavs, NASCAR and FC Dallas at 8:00, I’m going to kill my remote tonight…
How about a little effort getting out of the way of the pitch????
Down Goes Getz! Down Goes Getz!
i was with you until you said NASCAR. but i hear you can buy new remotes if you bust yours. good luck!
After all the questions about signing (and keeping) Andruw Jones, he’s really made the Rangers a far better team against lefty starters this year.
@i agree. i was so down on that decision, i really wanted that spot for some one they would bring up. but the rangers braintrust must have known what they were doing.
I’ll reserve my judgment about Jones until the All Star break
Let’s give Jones one swing thru the AL before we go all crazy…but so far, so good…
i liked it better when danks wasn’t doing as well against the rangers.
Me too, becca. I won’t give him the win yet though. If any team can get to him, its this lineup
BTW Razor doing the color on the Caps-Pens game on Versus
I think I saw a lefty throwing like this last night…
go pitt!
Razor makes everything better…Stars games, Versus games, The Musers…
@Little O There is another channel i have to flip to now lol!
I used to like you, Becca….
I hope you all enjoyed the Dallas Mavericks 2008-2009 season…
The Nuggets just cut their heart out and fed it to them in the very last second. Those kind of losses stick with you.
twice in one game! awesome!
The hockey game is getting a bit chippy after the Ovechkin hit the other night
There you go, Nellie…nice job.
Come on Salty, I’ve got you in the Homer Pool ! ! !
Its officially Rangers Season in the Metroplex
The kid comes thru
Danks is determined to get elvis at first.
This is great – a Rangers team that scares opponents on the bases to go with the power
Millwood at a cool 13 pitches/inning.
@Evan: Have fun!!!!!
Lets take the lead right here.
They are reporting on another site that feliz has been cleared to start throwing again.
Danks at 99 pitches through 6. Hopefully we get someone new for the 7th.
We need a soft fly to kinsler.
Byrd has been terrible in center.
methinks we miss our leader.
Gotta wonder why Ozzie went to the lefty out of the pen after Danks. odd.
@scooper – tell me you mean Young.
No Soup for us
probably because he’s their 7th inning guy.
The time is now.
@last: nope. I meant Evan. A lot of times it’s people asking him questions that gets the conversation going.
but I do think we miss Michael!
Yeah Baby!
Kins comes thru
the amazing, wonderful, perfect Ian comes through again!
Lets just switch it to ask scooper for tonight.
Anyone have any question for our one night expert?
Well, their 7th inning guy just gave up a run. Booya. I think you go RHP after Danks, when possible.
Steal home
(I can dream!)
Great at-bat!!! Don’t know how he laid off some of those close 2 strike pitches!!!
now, now! be nice!
I was being nice, I am giving you the floor.
At least we tied it up. Let’s see what we can do off of their 8th inning guy.
If only someone actually wanted my opinion! That’s what makes it cool. We actually care what Evan thinks!
Scooper, what do you think of this Feliz shoulder injury thing? Should we be worried? JD said if it were anyone else it wouldn’t make the papers…
@Scooper – when’s the last time the Rangers whiffed 12 times, AND won?
also – is it odd that they strike out 12 times without Crush in the game?
also – what do you scoop? I’m guessing first baseman, or animal waste containment specialist.
also – Millwood’s likely going to be at, or above 100 pitches after this inning. Since Harrison gave them a full day off yesterday, do you think they’ll go to the pen for the 8th?
See there, people care.
I think it is probably much ado about nothing. obagain said earlier that there is a report on another site that he has already been cleared to throw. If that is the case, then it isn’t anything structural and there shouldn’t be anything to worry about.
or Icecream! Dang, Ice cream – so obvious.
On the name thing, it is strange how people take things differently, I would have guessed s cooper as in your name.
@last: couldn’t tell you
it seems odd to me
actually, I was a catcher
I would let him go back out, but I’d have someone (C.J.?) up in the bullpen.
@obagain: wow! maybe they do!
Ok, thank goodness hadn’t read that yet. That was a funny Crush question @Last.
Surely they’ll go to the BP now…What do you think scooper?
@obagain: Got it! Sharon Cooper.
Scoop – knowing CJ Wilson is, let’s say “touchy” and takes stuff personal – would you be more or less inclined to put him in vs the Sox and Ozzy?
@last: I’d be more inclined to put him in. I think he would want to prove something to Ozzie.
Now that they know you are a woman they will ask more questions.
@obagain: not when they realize I’m probably old enough to be their mother.
I’m really liking these stolen bases!
C’mon, Nellie! Make them pay!
It would be nice to get a hit and drive in a run here.
@obagain: not when they realize I’m probably old enough to be their mother.
I’m really liking these stolen bases!
That was a funny statement coming from a catcher…
As a Baylor alum, I’m pulling for my boy Murph.
@one: they’re not stealing them against me!
@s.cooper – I worked with a guy named Chris Lukers. The station put our first initial with the last name, so I only ever called him “Cluckers” – I actually can’t remember if the second “c” was a part of his name or not.
Looked it up: T-4 in SB. I don’t remember a Ranger team being that high, well, ever.
29th in BB, though, T-17 for OBP, yet T-5 in runs.
Oh, well! We’ll try their 9th inning guy!
Dang, I was really hoping for a run there.
Good point scooper, they’re stealing them against one of the most hated players in the Major Leagues. It’s easier to get behind them this way. Dang Murph!
I was Super Coop in high school and scooper in college.
Wait, does that mean your name is O. Bagain?
Milly back out, surprising.
@last: I’m hoping that yours means you’re a romo fan, too.
Holland and O’Day in the bullpen. that’s interesting. not wanting to pitch C.J. in a tie game?
No, in high school I started playing golf.
I would hit a ball and ask the guys where it went, they said ob (out of bounds) so I would hit another and ask where that went and they would say ob again by the end of the year I wouldnt even have to ask, and the name stuck.
Caps – Pens going to OT
I’m the last of the Romohicans, and people say I have a little bit of an unhealthy affinity for Romo, considering I’m a married male. Then, last eason people were jumping off the bandwagon like mad and I felt like the “last of the romohicans”
I also use words like “romodemption” “romomentum” and other various Romo-speak terms.
Nice brush on Dye
Come on millwood.
You are going to get one of our guys killed.
It is holland time, the bases are loaded.
@last: I haven’t jumped off the bandwagon. I think this will be the year!
Holland to Thome w/ bases loaded, Act II.
see – out of bounds again is how I actually read it.
@last: you must be a golfer! that is a great way to get a nickname, though (obagain).
I really wonder if wash is trying to ruin holland.
You bring in the rookie in a bad situation when you have the vet in cj in the pen?
This is his third appearance already with the bases loaded.
@obagain: I think he trustr Holland more than C.J.
scooper, it grew on me but as a kid it was not a plesant experience.
way to go Salty! Get the ump to ask for help!
What a play!
FANTASTIC Play!
@Super Coop – Rate the bullpen in order of most trusted, on a scale of Frank Frank to Benson.
@obagain: yeah, it wouldn’t be much fun as a kid.
Beautiful play there Salty
Holland just couldnt get out of the way.
Got hit by the bat and kins nearly beaned him with the throw home.
@OB – nope, I just only know one other “OB” and I don’t think someone would use that as a handle. It’s some kind of chick-product. Every round of golf I play turns into golf-cart polo by about the 14th hole.
Frank
Jennings
O’Day
Holland
C.J.
Benson
Duh! my age is showing! who am I missing?
The corpse of eddie guardado.
between C.J. and Benson, but only situational
I think Wash is suffering from ‘Road Rage.’
Chill, Wash, Chill…Take a deep breath
was I imagining things, or did Josh say they turned 2 on that play?
it took forever for that ball to come out of byrd’s glove!
scooper, he did
To damned casual backing up the play
I’m not being fair to C.J. When his head is on straight, he’s right behind Frank.
We have some good guys coming up so we can get that run back.
If i was an MLB player, I’d check the standard headshot they use on like mlb.com and espn and make them pick one I liked.
I’d also smile.
@Little O: you’re right. the ump obviously didn’t think that he had touched the plate. Otherwise, he would have signaled safe.
@scooper – do you assess that on a day-to-day or some longer basis? Like, I don’t think his right would be right for many of us…
Man, it’s times like this I wish MEY was playing tonight.
For the guy looking for more BP help.
Kiker in frisco tonight is thru 6 and has 2 hits, no runs, 4 BB, and 7 K’s.
It would be nice to see him in the BP later this year.
You’re reaching critical mass on lefties if you bring up Kiker.
In our park we cant have too many.
@ last: some longer basis. he enjoys being the eccentric lefty (maybe a little too much). Evan seems to think that he’s come around, and I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. I don’t have the numbers, but I believe that his last couple of outings have been pretty efficient. I just like him better when his objective appears to be getting batters out quickly, rather than setting them up for strikeouts by using all of his pitches.
Davis isn’t up there playing small ball.
I told you millwood would get one of our guys killed.
That’s a bit much! We have not obviously thrown at anyone! The ump has the right to eject him without a warning.
Padilla’s foaming at the mouth right now.
Throwing behind the batter is the message
Tough loss but it was fun with a new leader.
Thank you scooper for saving the chat tonight.
Yep! I’ll guarantee you that Padilla hits someone tomorrow!
Any time! but I’m looking forward to having Evan back!
Padilla was going to hit someone anyway.
I hope it is the first guy so everyone gets warned and someone doesnt get hurt.
Good point! And if they issue the warning after the first batter, they won’t have a chance to retaliate this year!
Post game show:
*Millwood has a quality start, but another loss.
*Letting him go back out for the 8th seems to fit the philosophy of the team this year, but some times you have to go against percentages – agree or disagree?
*Ian Kinsler ends the game on a pop-up, goes 1-for-5 – not helping his road average. Are you wondering if he’s got a “Coors Field Effect” at home?
*Davis pinch hits for Andrus in the 9th, another example of going against the philosophy of letting the young guys take their lumps – is it just “feel” guiding decisions?
*Holland is brought into a pressure situation and succeeds. Where’s your level-of-faith in him right now? Asking another way, do you turn to him or Wilson if you need a big out late?
@last: good job on the post-game show
Millwood’s been good.
He’s your ace. You have to send him back out.
maybe not “Coors Field”; maybe just a mind set.
I would have let Andrus hit.
You still have to go with C.J.
I agree with letting him go out but I wouldnt have waited until the baese were loaded before pulling him.
Kins needs to get some hits on the road, I dont think it is a problem yet though.
Elvis has stepped up to a lot of challenges this year but davis could tie it with 1 swing, I am ok with that decision.
Holland is going to be good in any situations. I wish they would give him some more innings but I dont thisnk wash trusts him yet.
We need a few more, lets reach 150
@obagain: I agree with you on the bases loaded part. And you’re also right that Kins is doing fine. And I can go with the Davis thing (a big, strong lefty against a RH closer). Holland is going to get his shot before long.
Scoop – You have now rated Holland above and below CJ tonight.
in the home run pool, if you say no home runs and give the amount of runs, is that our runs or total runs? if it is total runs, Brent won.
I would put holland above cj but that is not a knock on cj, holland is good.
@ last: I know! I go back and forth on C.J. all of the time. I really think he’s too smart for his own good (and he knows it!). that can get in the way of playing good baseball. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I still have questions. Personally, I trust Holland more than I trust C.J.
Scooper – I like your interpretation, but I think it’s Ranger runs. However, we do have a benevolent dictator, so I’m crossing my fingers.
Leader, dictator – Evan’s been called many things tonight.
that’s benevolent dictator to you, Last!
@Brent, if Evan were to ask, I’d say give it to you.
Well, guys, I’m out of here for tonight! Talk to you tomorrow!
Tonite really has to go down to a loss pinned on Hicks lack of failure to give JonBoy money to go get a couple of bullpen arms this off-season and a little blame also has to go to Nolan and JonBoy for not pushing the issue………Wash just used what he was given tonite…………
just got home and nice work! i am sad i missed it. but you guys covered everything. and i want to grow up and be just like super coop.
You’re sad you missed it – I’m sad I was here for it.
I really need more friends.
If you grew up to be just like me, then you would find yourself sitting here on a Saturday night with nothing better to do! Be careful what you wish for!
I wil have the latest post on this thread.
37 days, how is it the BP, they didnt give up any runs.
I would put more blame on letting millwood pitch to 2 guys too many.
If you believe hicks is so cheap how do you explain all the improvements to the stadium just to make it a better experience for the fans?
I don’t like the “hicks is cheap” thing – he has, and is, paid a lot of guys a lot of money. I wish someone would look up all the players we DIDN’T spend on and see how they’ve done. Maybe one day I’ll get antsy and do it.
