Here in the new media world, we’ve got new duties. So, today we’ve spent some time hanging out with the Sisson Family of Waxahachie, who were the April winners of our Dr Pepper SportsSnaps Promotion. If you haven’t entered the SportsSnaps Promotion, it’s incredibly easy and the entry form is located just to the right of everything on InsideCorner’s front page. You don’t even have to be as adorable for tonight’s special guest, Kylie Sisson, to win. It does help, however.
In between being entertained by Kylie, we will be running our usual blog. So, away we go.
7:16: Perhaps the biggest reason that 3B Michael Young has gotten off to a stronger-than-usual performance in the power department is that he has moved his feet about six inches closer to home plate. Last year, pitchers started to give Young a steady diet of pitches away. Because he was so far from the plate, he couldn’t drive those pitches. And because pitchers had some degree of success with the away, away, away approach, Young was forced to make a change. This stance has allowed him to drive more pitches to the outside part of the plate. It’s also invited pitchers to try and come inside on Young. He likes pitchers to throw in, because those are pitches he can drive.
“That was our goal, to make an adjustment to the way he was being pitched last year,” hitting instructor Rudy Jaramillo said. “If he was worried about being able to handle that pitch, that would be a different story. But he likes that pitch. And he trusts his swing on those pitches.”
7:25: McCarthy allows a leadoff homer to Adrian Beltre to start the second. It’s the eighth homer he’s allowed this year, tying him for the AL lead with four others. The rest of the statring rotiation – RHPs Kevin Millwood, Vicente Padilla, Scott Feldman and LHP Matt Harrison have combined to allow just 18 homers.
8:05: McCarthy now leds the AL in homers allowed with nine after surrendering a two-run homer to Kenji Johjima.
8:11: After Hank Blalock strikes out with runners on second and third and nobody out, I feel compelled to point out the significant chasm between his batting average with nobody on base (.309) and his average (.200) with runners on base. Blalock has 55 at-bats in both situatiuons.
8:14: 1B Chris Davis had been 4-for-29 (.138) against left-handed pitching entering the Seattle series, but another small sign he might be emerging from his season-long slump is the fact that he is 2-for-4 against lefties the last two nights. He lined a soft single to left with one out and the bases loaded in the fourth to score the Rangers’ first run.
8:51: By the way, there were no winners in tonight’s home run pool. Lot of folks had Josh Hamilton. Nobody went with the fifth. Tempted to just make Ghost of John Rheinecker the honorary winner. I’d so like him/her to be happy for a change.
8:58: Few minutes ago in the comments, I made reference to this looking like a Rick Helling-like start. Just went back and looked: In 1998-99, his best years in Texas, Helling made three starts where he allowed three homers, but still managed to get into the sixth inning or later. the Rangers were 4-1 in those games. My point: A lot of homers doesn’t necessarily mean a lack of success. And just to reiterate a point we made last night, McCarthy has managed to outlast his opponent. Seattle now has David Aardsma in the game to start the seventh. McCarthy got through seven. The Rangers starter has outlasted his opponent 14 times in the last 17 games.
9:25: Big, big inning for the bullpen. Eddie Guardado gets big strikeout of Ken Griffey Jr.. Darren O’Day strikes out Adrian Beltre to end a scoring threat.
9:50: Let’s just call it right now: Rangers win. Elvis Andrus’ play up the middle on Franklin Gutierrez’s grounder snuffed out a rally and brings Josh Hamilton to the plate with the score tied. If the Rangers do win this game, it will be twice in four games against Seattle that a fielding play has made all the difference.
10:04: C.J. WIlson needs a strikeout. He believes he is a strikeout pitcher. Now is the time to prove it.
10:08: Or a double play.
10:09: Wilson also gets fortunate on that play. Counting spring training, that was the third time, he’s had runners at the corners and one out and had a hard one-hopper hit back at him. On each of the first two occasions, he took too long looking at third when we absolutely could have had a double play simply by immediately turning and firing to second. Well, today, he glanced quickly to third, but also seemed to make the adjustment more quickly to realize he had an inning-ending double play hit to him. Also, it helped the ball was hit very hard and that the batter, Ken Griffey Jr., is now very slow. So, he was able to recover from the slight hesitation and get the double play to squash the rally.
10:16: Thoughts on Nelson Cruz pinch-hitting for Elvis Andrus here. Make ‘em quick thoughts.
10:29: Given that this is coming after the fact, I suppose it will come as second-guessing, but I’d like to think I was just giving you guys some time to discuss and myself some time to gather thoughts. But the decision to pinch hit Nelly Cruz doesn’t sit well in my tummy. First, manager Ron Washington has said that, until he proves otherwise, Elvis Andrus is going to hit with the game on the line. He’s doing nothing lately to prove otherwise. He entered the game hitting .272 and was 2-for-4 in the first nine innings. He beat out a double play relay that I don’t think anybdoy else on the team would have beaten out in another at-bat. He’s made 16 unproductive outs this season – 15 strikeouts and one double play ball. Cruz entered the at-bat with 33 such outs. And on top of it, if you are pinch hitting Cruz, you are hoping for a game-winning double at the least. Why leave a catcher at first base to run. He’s got virtually no shot to score on a double. You are going to be bringing Omar Vizquel into the game to play short in the 11th anyway. Why not have him run for Jarrod Saltalamacchia at first? Those are just my thoughts. And I had to spill ‘em.
10:38: As I was saying: With the game on the line and runners on base, nobody you want up there more than Hank Blalock. I gotta admit, there are times I like being made to look foolish. Tonight, I’m happy to play the fool.
11:22: I really did type the update at 1o:38, just didn’t hit the update button. Damn update button!
Hey, Evan! Congrats, Kylie, I hope you are having a great time.
6 inches! It sounds so simple, but it takes a pro to see what needs to be dome and then to do it consistently. Kudos to Michael for adjusting and producing.
@evan: do you think C.J. is ready to close? does he have his head on straight?
Chris can really stretch! I thought his foot stayed on the base long enough.
@scooper: I think he’s been throwing the ball significantly better for the last three weeks, though the numbers don’t necessarily show it. I think someone got through to him about being a teammate, carrying his weight and the opportunity he has. I know that others have tried to reach him without success, but you never know what voice is going to actually resonate in a specific way. Giving him a chance to close for a couple of days might just be the kind of carrot he needs to really accelerate his recovery.
That blown DP looks alot like the 2008 rangers.
@evan: he’s a talented kid and I wish him nothing but the best. he’s going to have to earn our trust (the fans), though.
And thank you! I was beginning to feel abandoned!
@Ryan: yes, it does; but c’mon, it’s only one play.
Last night my MLB game on Comcast was in Spanish…….It was painful……but Jim Knox. I think would be better if he was in Spanish……….
Why is Hank Blalock hitting 5th against a lefty? Or starting against a lefty, ever, for that matter?
It was a double play….the ump was in a horrible position to see it……and therefore he didn’t see it…..it was a double play that shows clearly on the replay……….let’s make sure this umpire gets a tape to review so he doesn’t continue his bad habits……..
@Evan Blalock has RISP numbers like that his whole career……$6 mil we could have spent on the bullpen…….What a complete waste before or after the slow winter…….good managers anticipate the market, Rangers sure as Hell didn’t anticipate much this offseason…….getting a coach on the cheap may be effective but he until Maddox can come out of the bullpen I’m going to complain about Hank’s $6 mil……….Dumb dumb move……..
Oh my, what a shot
Wow! Josh smoked that ball!
@just: I’m not really sure that anyone anticipated the market would be as slow or as low as it was (baseball wise). when they picked up Hank’s option, it still looked like a good deal. it is easy to say now that it wasn’t, but it was generally considered a good deal at the time.
2 games. 2 homers. josh is surely officially back.
that’s the josh we all know and love! HE’S BACK!
Definitely need to get Mac a permanent seat in the booth. I’m sure Hamilton would love it.
This team can be pretty frustrating about striking out when they need to move runners over with less than two outs. Blalock and Davis lead that group.
@becca: how about our boy chris? I think he’s coming out of his funk, too.
anyone win the pool?
i sure hope so. it’s looking good so far.
Did Davis get enough playing time last year to be considered a rookie or is he a rookie this year?
Hank wouldn’t be so bad if he was playing against lefty and batting 5th.
Always baffling to me how much deference managers give to veterans
any one else see rick renner talking to washington about the ‘wash shuffle’ in the pregame? that was some fancy moving by the skipper. i will now have to constantly watch the dugout for the greatness of ron’s dance stylings.
McCarthey looks like he’s got a big curve starting to work. Let’s hope he gets some sink on that fastball
@Ryan’s Dad: I won’t swear to it, but I’m pretty sure he’s NOT a rookie.
@becca: yep, I saw it. ron seemed a little embarrassed about being caught on tape.
i hate that mccarthy’s given up 3 homeruns this game. if he were padilla, he’d bean the next player. i probably would too if i could throw the ball all the way to the plate at more than 15 mph
great comeback to stike the next guy out, though.
anyone else think we need to keep our names as well as our language unoffensive?
Just get the feeling Brandon is never really going to work out here
@Ryans Dad: Davis had too much service time and too many at-bats last year to retain his rookie status for this season. The rule is no more than 130 at-bats for a position player (Davis had more than 200) and no more than 50 innings pitched for a pitcher and no more than 45 days of service time (before Sept. 1) for either.
Not really
@Deloris: Realizing we love all things Seinfeldian, just wondering if maybe we couldn’t pick a, um, more appropriate screen name like say “Man Hands” or “Low Talker” or “I don’t wanna be a Pirate” or even Crazy Joe DaVola.
But to answer your comment: The number of homers is disconcerting, but Rick Helling gave up a lot of homers, too. If McCarthy can stick around games, it doesn’t matter how many homers he allows. It will mean they have mostly come with nobody on base. He’s allowed three tonight, but still a manageable four runs.
Anyone got a read on how good the mariner bullpen is?
Elvis rules!
Mccarthey also looks a lot better as a #4 as opposed to a #3– yet another reason why it would be really cool of Harrison is for real
@scooper Actually I miscommunicated on Hank’s RISP numbers……In 2008 and 2009 his RISP is 70+ lower……but 2006 and 2007 he was much better with a higher RISP……..but every year he has gone down 20-70……
There was some discusion in the media whether the Rangers would pick up the option so at least someone was thinking not to……
@Evan please go distract Jim Knox and put him out of his misery…….
McCarthy might be a number 5 but I’d be real nervous if someone thought about putting him in a playoff game…….and isn’t that our “new” standard?…….
@Just Saying: I personally want to hear how Knox would sound in Spanish. That, I think would be hysterical.
i too would enjoy knoxy in espanol. nadel knows some spanish. maybe he could tutor him.
Wasting too many dang chances.
@becca But Nadel understands what he is talking about!
i agree. i hate hate hate that. we can’t depend on stinking homers all the time. if guys are on base, sheesh…get them over the plate.
and i too love spicy food.
Is Eddie overthrowing?
and either twitter is paying josh a lot of money, or he is just like a kid with a brand new toy. my gosh, he is excited about technology.
I’m guessing Lewin gets excited about his toast every morning.
O’Day’s got some nasty stuff
wow. o’day’s stuff looked filthy.
This umpire is an embarassment……
I know it’s early in the season still… but how did we get so lucky in landing O’Day. Do the Mets really have that much relief depth that they could lose him?
Eddie and O’Day, great job!
@becca: FS Southwest is paying Josh to be excited about their twitter site.
@Jacob: I’m guessing if he had looked this good in NY, they would have kept him.
I wish Lewin would at least make an attempt at pronouncing Guiterrez’s name correctly….. it’s a T, joth, not a D
if we’re tied, do we bring in cj? or does o’day stay in? what if we pull ahead? who’s in charge here? i need answers!
Personally, I would rather see the peanut vendor with the crazy glasses come in to pitch if we’re tied than C.J.
@becca: in a tie, I’d leave O’Day in and save C.J. for when we get a lead.
we still have Jennings, too.
remember when we had frankie? and he was available to pitch? that was awesome. would have felt good right about now.
@becca: already missing him? me, too!
Elvis is doing a great job as long as he doesn’t get picked
whew! i love when the excessive throwing to first becomes an overthrow/missed catch/easy steal! fantastic, seattle!
C’mon, Michael!
they need a double steal right here
and there you have it, jacob becker!
I love when the pitcher is so distracted by the baserunners that they do something like throw a wild pitch.
wild pitch does the trick too.
correct passed ball
darn!
eh, either way, it just means we left two runners in scoring position on, instead of just one.
which we’re really good at.
Would love to see a walk off tonight.
no freakin way. how the heck did he do that?
does it get any better than that?
onohedidnt
holy crap Elvis.
holy cow. that was amazing.
The King!
Evan was that the best play you’ve seen in Texas?
Twice in a week Elvis may be in that sports network Top 10 plays…. wow. Rangers and key defensive plays. Who would have thunk?
I am amazed by Salty’s improvement behind the plate. Forget tonight’s earlier bad throw. he’s doing well all the things I criticized him for last year: blocking most balls in the dirt; cutting down base runners, and, most of al, framing pitches, and not lunging at them like last year.
I’m going to sit down and write a letter to the Braves tonight saying thank you.
just like pitching (and hitting), i really think good defense is contagious. with elvis playing like that, how can anyone else dare to be nonchalant?
Do we have a count on LOB’s?
Good to see documentary class didn’t lead to me missing a good game or anything.
@ryans dad: 726 or so.
ugh. my gut.
CJ YOU HURT MY GUT
this is not going to be good for his confidence! sheesh!
Darn it, CJ…. Cardiac Kid in action…
Good grief.
Could CJ lose this game 100% by himself? 2 errors back to back?
go ahead at 3rd…time for some more timely defense and good pitching
salty has most definitely improved his defense!
holy crap, ceej. i mean, um, thanks for the stop, salty?
maybe CJ is actually TRYING to load the bases and pitch for an inning-ending DP? Maybe???
Ya probly not
is jennings warming up yet?
Is there something wrong with Jennings that we don’t know about? Why isn’t he in this game?
i guess i should have said that this isn’t going to do anything for our confidence in him, huh?
Wow. Salty is earning his keep right now.
(sigh) I may have to go check the Mavs score. Dunno if I can gut through this (sorry for the pun, becca…)
whoosh. everyone, it’s ok to exhale now.
ok, so he WAS setting them up for the DP…
He makes it so much harder than it has to be, but I’ll take it.
Thank God! I just hate the fact that everything involved with C.J. involves drama. and that’s the nice thing about Frankie – 1,2,3 is pretty common.
Well now, this is interesting.
@scoops – that’s what it is. drama. nailed it.
davis vs. a lefty? not too optimistic
Some of that “A” would be good from AON
I guess CJ can start to call himself a DP pitcher.
I just want you to know that CJ and I are making great progress……ALL of you know that just a few weeks ago CJ would have found a better way to lose this game……see how our couch sessions have reeled CJ in…….just think if we didn’t have this couch time?
Anyone want to volunteer to apply Gestalt therapy to CJ?
Davis’s approach is much improved , recently. Like you could see Murphy was coming out of it–if you knew what to look for.
PH for Elvis? Hmmm…
just by instinct i keep thinking about dr pepper when you guys say DP. and so, i’m thinking to myself, well, that’s great that cj and dr pepper are tight, sure would be nice if he got an out though.
then i realize we’re talking about baseball and not delicious carbonated beverages and i sit silently in shame.
@evan: that note about C.J. scares me even more! You have to know before the pitch what you are going to do if the ball is hit to you. when you need the DP, you don’t hesitate – you throw to second immediately.
and i’m only ok with elvis PHing if we don’t have to go back on the field.
i meant nelly PHing for elvis.
i’m still shamed by my dr pepper musings.
Didn’t like pinch hitting for Elvis one bit. Even moreso that Nellie just sat there and watched strike three.
well, we still have Omar!
the longer the game goes the bigger the strike zone gets
obviously, wash doesn’t think he can live through another inning of C.J., either!
Tough call for Nellie? That pitch was right down the middle.
that, at least, was not C.J.’s fault.
oh holy crap. last thing we need is jim knox and a bunch of punks yelling cj. my gracious. have we not suffered enough?
who closes tomorrow?
It was only a matter of time.
still just one out, too.
you have to pull him now, right? please?
Oh, sweet moses smell the roses.
That was CJ’s fault. Left it up.
I think it’s time to call up Madrigal and unconditionally release CJ for better or worse. If I ever run for President, that will be my platform.
@Last: I think that is my new motto.
@ryans dad: i’ll be your acorn-type PAC. i’ll canvas the metroplex for you.
It’s a Seinfeld…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Butter_Shave
at least we have 2, 3, and 4 coming up
@JD hey buddy are we still on for lunch tomorrow to discuss CJs contract extension?…….
Been thinking that $1.75 mil contract is a little low considering you were willing to give Hank $6 mil……
way to go, Michael!
I was just thinking, hopefully the rangers come back, but unfortunately you have to put cj in that situation so that you can find out what you have in him. I’m personally on the release cj bandwagon, but that’s just me.
Mavs are almost out of it. FYI
ya, the mavs handled the thuggets like CJ handles pressure situations
that morrow cat is fond of 97 pmh fastballs. guess that’s why he’s in the majors.
Check that Jeffrey, any situation….any situation.
double steal?
@scooper I like your thinking.
Should have bunted.
Hey now.
ballgame!
man, i give blalock crap. but he did it again.
@evan: we know you weren’t second-guessing. and everything you said makes sense!
hello win column!!!
sincerely,
YOUR First Place Texas Rangers
I’m kinda glad Blalock was in there.
$6.5 million for Hank doesn’t look so bad now!
Amazing what a little tough love on Inside Corner does to motivate this group……we love ya and we not letting up…….
I do believe that’s a hit w/RISP for The Hammer.
Gawd, don’t hurt him!
Hank just earned some of that 6 million
HANK!!!
I’ll be at the game tomorrow… Hopefully it is exciting as this win! Great win for the guys…
Even if that’s the only “win” you credit Hank with, 6 mil/win is still a value when you compare it to CHoP.
I love winning AL West series.
Ok I smell blood……want a contract extension for another $6 mil? oh, c’mon…..
If this team can win with CJ on the mound and Hank in the batters box with RISP then anything is possible……..
In baseball you win a 3rd, lose a 3rd and what you do in the other 3rd determines what kind of team you are.
We’re a bit ahead of our 3rd 3rd’s projection/expectation – so while I don’t want them to lose tomorrow, I’d rather it happen then instead of vs. Anaheim. So I promise not to hyperventilate tomorrow.
I totally agree with Evan on the PH for Elvis. Why? But when things go counter intuitive to standard baseball logic, I already know what Wash answer will be: Gut.
and cj rips mine up
I propose a rise of the proletariat to determine a “comment of the night” to be awarded in the comments the next day.
I nominate Jolly @10:42 for tomorrow.
2009 Dallas Mavericks, R.I.P.
oh I forgot and Wash making the bullpen and pinch hitting decisions with CJ and Hank as heros ….it’s a funky nirvana night……..
that’s a lot of pressure for jolly.
and i’d say that scooper is probably the closer.
Not a commenter, DP. A specific comment from the past, like Jolly’s at 10:42: “If this team can win with CJ on the mound and Hank in the batters box with RISP then anything is possible……..”
I think the Rangers smell blood. They are playing well right now and are catching the Angels and Mariners at the right time.
If they can get out to a 5 or 6 game lead in this division by June they might be hard to catch. Sweep the lowly Mariners tomorrow and sweep the Angels after that. The Rangers should kick the Mariners because they are chumps and kick the Angels while they are hurt.
Stab and twist, that’s the plan.
also, why are there several small dots, then 2 bigger ones at the end of the comment? does the thing recognize elipsi as different punctuation marks than periods? seems so.
Morse code test… . . … . . …
your games confuse me. but i whole heartedly support them. and what jolly said at 10:42. rangers baseball, where amazing happens. and dr pepper. and twittering with josh.
@becca Thanks…I’m strickly setup
@all of you……now get up and stretch your arms out and give my client a big hug…….c’mon wussies a bear hug……now doesn’t that feel better
that outing is supposed to make us feel better?
uh, oh! Wash just said he still trusts C.J.!
Wonder who we could get for CJ from the Braves?
I still trust CJ.
There’s no one I’d want to run my guitar hero event more than him.
Or drive your sissy foreign race car.
@RyansDad: why don’t you ask them when you write that thank-you letter?
Someone owes Blalock an apology.
Good Idea Scooper
Beware if you let my client slip into your dreams on another team…….if you think it is painful with him on the team just think how painful it would be for him to come back and beat you………a Freudian nightmare…..
trade him to the N.L. we’d only see him in the World Series and he’s sure to choke.
I’ve got an idea. We could sign him to a 10 year $250,000,000 contract, then trade him to the Yankees.
that’d work!
Just pump him full of steroids for about three years, give him Madonna’s phone number and bodda bing, bodda bang. Problem solved.
i like the way you think.
Why do we trust DH to come in with the bases loaded and no one out and we don’t trust Andrus in the late inning with RISP and a tie game…..if you are going to baptize your young pitcher with fire then Elvis needs the same opportunity to hone his skills…..just Saying…….
i agree.
Man this is a tough crowd……my kind of people…….
@evan: are we not having a post-game tonight?
I guess Hamilton really is healthy if he can make that semi-diving catch and slide into home without hurting himself. sure was nervous when he dove for that fly-ball though
Good night ladies and gentlmen. Need sleepy.
@ryans dad: don’t forget the part about making his lips look purple during night games. i think that has something to do with it too.
so much for Boston wearing out LAA bullpen. Angels up 8-4, bottom of the 8th. Matt Palmer (starting pitcher for LAA) is going back out for the 9th. Ervin Santana has his first start of the season tomorrow afternoon.
Evan: Nobody believes you.[smiley face] Sweet win .
ok…we need a few more comments to get to 200. come on, for evan
good nite!
Please change the name, Doris. I like this site because contributers are polite, listen to each other, and are serious about their baseball. D maganine’s got a good thing with Evan here–don’t cause people to start leaving for another site (you’re not a DMN mole are you?)
I’m guessing DMN never wanted to do something as comprehensive, informative and interactive as this… and that’s why Evan doesn’t work there anymore!!
