As I referenced earlier, I think this series is far more important for the Rangers than for the Angels. The Angels have past performance and slew of stars on the comeback trail on which to fall back. The Rangers need to win this series to assert themselves as a team that will be hanging around the pennant race all summer. Winning this series would only build the Rangers’ confidence and would possibly create a littlle self doubt in the Angels about their superiority.
I typed all that before the Rangers allowed five runs in the ninth inning. Now this questions confronts us: The Rangers got the win tonight, but how much of the club’s confidence might the Angels’ ninth-inning rally dampen.
at least we won’t be over-confident.
You must play (and manage) all 9. Let’s hope LESSON LEARNED!
We definitely miss Frankie. Holland didn’t even make it out to warmups due to a migraine and yet he gets called on to pitch the longest outing he’s made since he got to the bigs. He seemed to wilt after the 2nd out in the 9th. the last inning it seemed like Holland also got squeezed on several pitches in the strike zone. Anything at the bottom of the zone was a ball. But we won.
if score is 10-3 or 10-9 Rangers are still 2.5 games ahead of the Angels. 2 outs in the 9th and all those guys reaching is more of fluke
Bah, if Holland doesn’t get squeezed like he did on the zone this game ends 10-3. Shouldn’t have any effect on their confidence.
i didn’t say that it will hurt their confidence; i said they won’t be OVER-CONFIDENT.
Another point is that the Angels are good…real good. It won’t be easy to outrun them this season, but if they can it might mean a deep run in the playoffs. Very similar to the Rays last year.
None. There is another game tomorrow to worry about. Ballplayers have to move on to the next game.
I think this came at the perfect time to keep them from overconfidence and keep them focused and professional. There weren’t really any egregious errors. They got squeezed on strike zone and the Angels had a run of luck. just focus on playing your game and convert this chance to win the series. go deep on their bullpen again tomorrow and good things, and maybe Ws, will come.
He got squeezed and the Angels got lucky on some nasty pitches. What’s important is that Texas will be looking down on the rest of the AL West next Tuesday in Detroit no matter what happens the rest of this weekend.
Go Rangers!
i ran some calculations.. it only negatively affected the rangers confidence by 1.6%… nothing to worry about
Nothing to worry about. We know that we’ll never lose with any lead in the 9th, much less a seven run lead, after Frankie gets back. I’d be more worried about O’Day’s confidence against the Angels more than the Rangers overall.
jb, really? By my calculations it only negatively affected the Rangers confidence by 1.2%. Where do you get your info?
Good but scary game. Kinsler = MVP, D
Holland..learn from this, it happens…you belong here. C.J…really wish you weren’t a Ranger. No more shirtless d bags asking scripted questions on the air please
Go Rangers!
Greatness LSBS, couldn’t say it better myself.
Post game show on The Ticket is revealing some fair weather fans starting to sniff what what we’ve been smelling since the Texeira trade.
Holland was hitting his spots and not getting the calls. Give them extra an pitch and they will drill it. The strike zone was way out of control on both sides.
I’ve really been unimpressed by the umpires over the last few games……they don’t really seem to be able to believe the Rangers pitching……..they have been an issue and they need to stop being an issue……..you can expand it but you sure as hell can’t shrink it like these yardbirds are doing…..
I know how I would feel if I was in that dugout. I’d be a little bit pissed off. I’d be happy that we won, but not satisfied with HOW we won. I would want to come out tomorrow and stomp on them from the beginning. And that is also one of the marks of a good team. In the past, we would have simply been happy to win; now, we care about HOW we win.
Also, a couple of thoughts about Holland. You need to push him. He needs to find out just what he can do, and what he needs to work on. I’m sure he didn’t feel 100% (I get migraines and they can be really bad), but he’ll practically never feel 100%. Yes, he was squeezed on some of those calls. That’s something else that he needs to be able to pitch around. I love the fact that he throws a lot of strikes, but he also catches a lot of the plate pretty often. He’ll learn. And he’ll get even better. This is all part of the process.
I’m a believer in this pitching staff right now. All 5 guys in the rotation are capable of delivering 7 innings most every night, although BMac is still a work in progress.
The back end of the bullpen is more than capable of getting the last 6 outs, also, but there are certain situations you hate to see them in. First off, Guardado is the very definition of LOOGY right now, so his value is limited. Also, O’Day is nearly the exact opposite…he should not be asked to get important outs with men on and a lefty at the plate. He is devastatingly effective against righties, however.
Once Frankie is back, I think CJ and Eddie can handle those tough lefty hitters rather than leave O’Day in there. That means we’ll win way, way more than we lose when the starter hands a lead to the bullpen to start the eighth.
When needed, Holland and Jennings are great weapons to pitch multiple innings, and both can keep the game close or protect a lead. In my mind, the Rangers will probably win at least 15-20 games this yr where they trailed or were tied after 6 innings. I believe we will definitely win 90 games, unless the rotation gets hit by the injury bug…
