About Last Night: Battle Of The Bullpens

Newest theory: Bullpens, not starting pitching, will determine the outcome of this series and maybe the AL West race as a whole. Addressed a lot of the issues yesterday in the series preview.

What’s disconcerting, if you are the Rangers and obsessing over bullpen pitch totals as I am, is that the Rangers threw considerably more pitches out of the bullpen last night (74) than did the Angels (36) even though Rangers starter Kevin Millwood once again pitched deeper into the game than his opponent. What mitigates most of that consternation, however, is that Derek Holland threw 58 of those pitches, so the bullpen workload wasn’t spread out among too many people. Holland won’t be available for the rest of the series, but he wouldn’t have been available even if he’d have come out after the eighth inning last night.

In the event that RHP Vicente Padilla doesn’t go at least seven innings and allow one hit for the third straight outing, the guy to watch in the bullpen today is RHP Jason Jennings. It’s part of the reason he ended up not pitching or warming up last night, giving a fifth consecutive off night. The Rangers can’t use Holland or Jennings on back-to-back days, so one was going to have to pitch one day and one would have to be available the next.  If Padilla makes it through the middle innings, the Rangers should have Jennings to fill the role Holland did yesterday and LHP Eddie Guardado, RHP Darren O’Day and LHP C.J. Wilson to mix-and-match in the ninth inning.

With a bullpen that is currently limited on several fronts – Frank Francisco’s unavailability, the inability to pitch Holland, Jennings or seemingly forgotten-about long man RHP Kris Benson on back-to-back days – its going to take some creative management out there. On one hand, last night, it looked like Ron Washington left Holland in a game longer than he needed to. On the other hand, using Holland as long as he did last night, gives him the widest array of weapons to use today and Sunday.

The other thing to keep in mind today is that Angels starter John Lackey is making his first start of the season after dealing with arm problems and isn’t going to stick around long. In each of his two rehab starts for Triple-A Salt Lake, Lackey threw 75 pitches, so he should be limited to about 90 pitches. If the Rangers can make him work at a pace that matches his career arc against Texas (a 17.4 pitches per inning average), he might make it through five innings. That puts more pressure on the Angels bullpen, knowing they are going to have to go at least four innings. Angels relievers have thrown 200 more pitches than their Rangers counterparts over the last 11 days, so there is a fatigue factor that the Rangers could potentially exploit by making Lackey work even harder than he traditionally has against the Rangers.

Holland would have been okay if the umpire hadn’t squeezed the heck out of him. How can you change the strike zone in the 9th inning? That was just crazy and horrible. I really hate strike zone inconsistency. Big or small I don’t care, just call the same zone the whole darn game.

EG, what’s the latest on getting the game in today? I am planning on heading out there and buying tix at the ballpark.

@DPPBM: Game? What game? I’m just worried about the Robert Earl Keen concert afterward. Actually, today has been a big concern all week. Latest weather.com update has it raining through 3 p.m. with isolated and scattered storms thereafter.

    bobblehead day!

Once the decision was made to bring Holland in after the headache, then letting him try to close the game was the a good decision by the coaches and manager! Holland needs the work, he needs to learn how to deal with inconsistent umpires, and he needs to develop the ability to concentrate when the game is “in hand”.

Let’s see how Jennings and/or Benson do as needed. If Benson continues to under perform, then Eyre is close to ready. A worthy experiment by JD did not work but at least he tried.

Evan: Any news on the recent pick-up from the Nationals? What’s the deal with his low ERA.

    Evan,
I thought the bull pen management last night was terrible. You don’t think that if you pull Holland after the 8th he is available for one inning or at least one lefty hitter on Sunday? Be nice to run him out there to get Abreau in the 7th or 8th. Especially after he had the head-ache problem before the game…Stupid.

That doesn’t even cover bringing in O’Day to face a lefty, and then CJ to face a righty. Wash screwed the whole inning up. I know they were up big, but he ended up burning three pitchers in that inning for nothing. CJ is likely going to have to pitch all three days and he looks terrible at the moment.

    Evan,

Are the injuies to Francisco and Feliz serious? What are we looking at?

    Evan,

Will you post an update on the weather as soon as you have it? I have two little ones and don’t want to head out there before I need to (and can keep my littlest napping — why do kids need to be woken up on school days but on weekends wake up at the crack of dawn?!!).

I’m curious about how much confidence the coaching staff has in Benson and Jennings. If you can’t use them ahead by 7 when can you use them. Neither have pitched in quite awhile either. Is there a reason for that? Of course if Padilla throws another complete game that solves that problem. But it’s obvious the Angels hit a little better than the Sox and the Mariners.

@Michael- I’m sure Evan has better info than me, but Mike Hinckley was DFA’d by the Washington Nationals after walking 11 men in 9 innings, including a walk that scored the winning run just before his reassignment.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we had an arm in the bullpen we could actually use instead of the washed up Benson taking up space.

Get him out of there and try somebody else. Anybody would be better than he’s been and nobody would do any worse. If the first one doesn’t work, try again until we find somebody.

I just don’t understand keeping a worthless veteran who is not going to be here when things really get going.

@Evan Where has Jennings been? He seems to have been relegated to a mop up role……
