Late as usual, but here we are …
7:18: The breakdown on Derek Holland’s first inning of work against the New York Yankees goes like so: He threw 21 stressful pitches, one of which was hit for a two-run homer by New York’s Mark Teixeira. He threw 15 fastballs, which average 92.5 mph in velocity and he got three swings and misses . By comparison, RHP Kevin Millwood average 88.5 mph last night.
7:39: Holland allowed back-to-back two-out doubles in the second, resulting in another run. He averaged 91.7 mph on his 10 fastballs. He has thrown first pitch stikes to seven of the 12 hitters he’s faced.
7:42: It is looking more and more like RHP Tommy Hunter will join the team to start Friday’s double-header opener against Oakland. Hunter threw 123 pitches on Sunday, one less than Brandon McCarthy did on the same day. McCarthy is having his start moved back a day and GM Jon Daniels acknowledged an extra day of rest is a benefit, but, Daniels said, the most signifiacnt reason is it will allow the Rangers the most flexibilithy with a number of pitching moves that could be made Friday.
7:51: Holland averaged 91.2 mph on fastballs in the third. I know somebody mentioned concern about the “dip” in velocity, citing a pair of 89 mph fastballs to finish it off. Wouldn’t read too much into it. The gun at this park is slow – why I don’t know – but it is. Holland did have a stressful first inning and, if you are looking for a reason, that’s as good as any. In Houston, on a gun that might have been a tick fast, he started out at 94-96 mph and averaged right about 93 mph with the fastball. Entering the fourth he’s averaging right at 92 mph for 30 fastballs. The velocity will probably leak a little towards 91 as the game goes on, but don’t think there is anything to be concerned about.
8:11: Official word from the Rangers is that LHP Matt Harrison’s shoulder soreness is not serious, but until the guy gets back on the mound, you never know. With an off day tomorrow – and more importantly – one on Monday, the team has some flexibility in making a decision about a potential DL move. They could push Harrison, originally scheduled to pitch Saturday, back a full week without really causing themselves any issues. For now, they are operating like its just a touch of crankiness. He received some oral anti-inflammatory medication, but did not have an MRI exam or a cortisone injection. Those are steps more typically associated with real long-term concern.
8:16: Interesting that Ian Kinsler (514,645 votes) leads Dustin Pedroia in first round of All-Star game balloting. Second base and the last outfield spot look like the interesting voting battles. At first, Kevin Youkilis (my favorite hitter in the game) has a 115k lead over Miguel Cabrera. At short, Derek Jeter is trouncing Marco Scutaro (273,589 votes) and Elvis Andrus (258,243) by nearly 300k. At third, Evan Longoria has a big lead over Michael Young, who has a 50k lead on Alex Rodriguz. And at catcher, Joe Mauer has a 100k lead on Victor Martinez. In the outfield, Jason Bay and Josh Hamilton have significant leads on the first two spots, but only 12k in votes separates Ichiro Suzuki, Ken Griffey Jr. and Nick Markakis. I think Kinsler and Pedroia, once college teammates, will be linked together as the best second basemen in the game for some time.
8:23: If you are looking for a pitch count for Derek Holland tonight, 100 is a nice number. But the total is not as important as the per-inning count. Holland has had three stressful innings tonight. He is at 63 pitches through four innings, but it would not surprise me if this ends up being his last. If it takes him 15-20 pitches to work through this, I think they might call it a day. But that’s just complete conjecture. Even brief at-bats against the Yankees are stressful. They make pitchers work for every out and every swing.
8:46: Holland is starting the sixth. He has 79 pitches. He had 38 through the first two innings; 41 through the next three.
9:01: I realize it’s curently 6-0, New York, but 1B Chris Davis just demonstrated why he remains in the starting lineup. He leaped to tip and then snare Johnny Damon’s liner with the bases loaded in the sixth. He’s the only 1B option on the team who has a shot to make that play. If he doesn’t make it, it’s 8-0. That’s two runs saved right there. He may have struck out with a man on to end the second and with two men on to end the fourth, but if you are going by a plus/minus scale, he’d have to be at least even.
9:20: Chris Davis just obliterated a bat after being called out on strikes to end the sixth. Now, he may not have been happy with the call, but that’s the kind of body language that gives me a little pause. To this point, Davis hasn’t once taken his offensive frustration into the field. But I also don’t recall him being as expressive in his frustration as after the last at-bat.
9:33: Want to talk about dangerous? A.J. Burnett threw 118 pitches in six innings, an average of 19.7 pitches per inning. It matches Boston’s Josh Beckett (against Tampa Bay) for the highest pitches-per-inning average for a single outing of at least six innings by an AL pitcher this year. Both Beckett and Burnett, once teammates in Florida are max-effort strikeout pitchers. But averaging 20 pitches an inning to me is still a recipe for trouble. Of course, that probably doesn’t mean much to you with the Rangers trailing 8-0, but nobody can say the club hasn’t made the opponent work tonight. Making pitchers throw lots of pitches doesn’t guarantee an offensive outburst, but it does improve the chances over a three-game series. Problem is, if you don’t force the pitchers to sweat until the third game of the series, you kind of defeat the purpose of “working them” in the first place.
9:55: The Rangers have allowed New York 52 baserunners – er, make that 53 after Derek Jeter took a walk to start the eighth – in 26 innings this series. Putting two runners on base every inning against the Yankee lineup is a good way to kill any confidence a pitcher has built up over the course of the season. Talk about stress-inducing.
10:15: I’m assuming we are watching the last appearance of Kris Benson’s Rangers career. A homer, a walk and a single and he’s got one out. He’s allowed 41 baserunners this season in 18.1 innings pitched. Yep, a 2.28 WHIP ratio. That’s a WHIP-ing is what it is.
10:20: About Benson, make that 42 in 18.1. Dee. Lish.
Summer donna, DH.
I don’t think I can remember the last time I wanted to win a regular season series so bad
OK. Here we go!
I will be surprised if Wash makes any odd or unusual moves today. It is one thing to be questioned locally (excellent job Evan) and another to be second guessed on national TV.
@auditor: if he believes in what he is doing, he won’t care who second-guesses him.
Time to pick up the rookie…..Teixera got him good, nothing to be too ashamed of…
@Evan: Any update on the night out with Evan? I noticed that DMN is doing the same thing on the night that we had planned. Shocker…
I would hope that any major league manager does not consider the scope of televison coverage in his decision-making process
One lesson learned: against the Yankees, you can’t wait until the second time through the order to work in your other pitches.
Kinsler. 1 pitch. Brutal yet again.
Hope this does not signal our approach this game
Anyone hear a little more explanation for Slusarski getting let go from Frisco? That was Nolan’s hire.
@adios: he is who he is. no one complains when he hits a home run on that first pitch.
my thought exactly scooper.
Kinsler getting “big league-itis?”
By that, I mean did all the success and hype from the beginning of the season go to his head?
Silly mistakes, less discipline at the plate, etc.
He needs to get back to the basics.
that was a good slide by Michael (it looked like the ball was there in time)
I know the reason, but I always wonder why they TAKE the best pitch they see the whole at bat, maybe the whole game…..
I think Kinsler is just pressing, nothing more, nothing less….in my opinion.
Though none of you care, a Ranger series win would certainly lessen my pain from today…that and a couple of more Miller Lites.
I am hopeful that holland isn’t terrorized too badly on his way back to the bullpen…..
evan, any word on MH. Is this serious or just soreness?
@TD: I think Kins has gotten a little “homer-happy”. This also happened that year he hit so many HR’s in April. He needs to settle down and use the whole field. The homers will still be there.
@justsaying: you’re giving up on DH mighty quickly tonight.
@ManU, 2-0 tisk tisk, might need more than a few Millers to ease that burden.
@scooper: Don’t get me wrong, It drives me crazy with that first pitch pop out…..You could be right. I am just waiting for him to get in a groove again. PLEASE HURRY.
Now THAT is how to pitch!
@TD: it IS taking longer than I thought it would, but I’m confident that he will be OK.
So far, young guys getting ripped, Millwood (veteran) battled and was in control of the game…..coincidence against a quality opponent? I think not…..
maybe its too early to say RIPPED, but hit and scored on early….
@TD: you are right – no coincidence. they have a veteran line-up that knows how to hit.
good ab
Nice lead off walk…..GOOD AB.
I am curious at what Wash expects of DH today……And what the front office expects……And what do the inside corner bloggers expect?
On the local broadcast, they are talking all-star voting…has anybody voted the 25 times (for free tickets)? And how long does it take?
@scooper I’ll be happy with 5 innings and 4 runs……we’ll just have to score more runs……
CRUSH time………
@TD: yes, I have. it takes maybe 10 minutes (the website “remembers” your picks each time).
I have also voted for my 2 housemates and my dog (yes, Bernard has an e-mail address!)
that was an ugly swing
@scooper: Ok, Thanks for the info.
Salty better be careful! He’ll want that pitch called for his pitcher.
At some point we have to wonder how Crush is going to handle constantly being embarrassed by pitchers. Is this really what is best for the guy’s development?
shut down inning for the kid…gain some confidence against the heart of the line up
Tex is locked in
as far as expectations for DH tonight: maintain poise, battle, 6 innings.
That’s the way to get out of the inning!
@Manu: Miller Lite for a Man U fan, really? I’d think you guys like something a little more…hardy
Sweet double play
very nice…now go get the kid some runs
Hey Evan- Have you heard anything on what Chris Davis is doing to fix his swing? It hurts watching him strikeout. Last year he was hitting so much better.
@adios: good point! I would figure something like Bass or Guiness, at least!
@evan(or anyone else): do we have a pitch count on DH? and Burnett?
@scoop– I agree Kins is who he is…what else would he be?
I’d suggest he may be more of a middle of the lineup hitter now.
i hear or read dh was around 100
Anyone know why first Harrison, and now Holland have experienced a dip in velocity? Last 2 FBs were 89 MPH from Holland, and Harry was down around that area also, after touching 96-97 at times earlier this season.
@evan: has Elvis introduced his folks to Vizquel?
@adios: I would have no problem with that.
AJ is at 54
@Evan A)How low does Kinsler’s average go before we start to worry?
B) Does it seem like the Rangers struggle against power pitchers?
DH is at 45
@adios: thanks!
@scooper sorry thought you were asking about limits
@wes: thanks, anyway!
@scoop– you might like the Game Day feature at mlb.com…just click on the little baseball diamond next to the Rangers score on the front page on the left.
It track pitches, balls & strikes, box score, etc in real time.
Fun to follow as you watch the game
Well, near real-time. And its free.
Thanks!
Greetings from the ballpark
@Ehren: Yes, after we decided we’d do a night, others acted fast to scoop up said night. Guess that’s what happens when you have a good idea. Others want to emulate. Which is why I’m basically stealing the idea Jamey Newberg created several years ago to bring all of his loyal readers and the NMLR community together. Anyway, the current plan is for a weeknight game (bad news), but against the Boston Red Sox (good news) in late July. A ticket link is being created and I’ll be posting official details soon. If there are issues with a weekday game, it’s going to be up to you to speak up soon.
Anybody seen the site to vote Manny in to the all star game?
http://voteformanny.blogspot.com/
So does anyone know how you obtain your free tickets for voting the 25 times?? I just did my voting.
Nice inning by the kid. PLEASE get some small ball rolling here guys!
@TD- last year they eventually sent you an email with your options
I am not/would not be surprised if Manny gets in via fan vote. I just myself blatantly voted for all TEXAS RANGERS, so it’s such a wacked out system anyways…I feel okay doing it just to fight the YANKEE/RED SOX fans.
@adios: OK, cool….thanks.
A little late to the boards tonight -
The kid has been solid. No shame getting dinged by Tex. He hit more than his fair share of homeruns to that spot while he was here.
I’ve been impressed with his curve, impressed with his fastball. He’s battling against a very good team.
Andruw Jones sure doesn’t run like he used too. He looked very slow on that last double to left.
@evan: that would also indicate that Harry isn’t too concerned. If either party is concerned, they usually do an MRI just to make sure.
@alex: VERY VERY VERY SLOW, almost geriatric!
@alex thats b/c hes put on 30lbs since getting off the sauce
I think DH is doing great! He’s bounced back nicely, he has a good chance to get at least 6 innings, and he will learn from this start. He’s only given up 3 runs and that certainly is not embarrassing. Now we’ll see if we can hit Burnett.
crush needs a quaility ab here
NO COMMENTS on that Davis AB….lol.
I don’t be Captain Negative, but I think we are rapidly approaching the time where we have to consider what to do with Davis. He’s offense is canceling out his defense at this point.
What do you guys think? Am I jumping the gun?
@Dylan: WHAT TO DO though???
@Dylan: I think you are jumping the gun a little bit.
In my opinion: Minors may help, but then he still has to come BACK up and face the big boys and what if the strikes out a bunch in his first 2 weeks back? Then what did that accomplish? We are 4 games up, good team chemistry, he hit 2 bombs last night and plays great D. That AB right there just hurt bad, got to pick up at least one of those runners. Such the conundrum, but if I am GM: Keep him in his spot for now, give Hank a few days a week at 1B and let’s ride the wave and see if he gets his confidence “overnight”.
I guess all pitchers probably experience a dip in velocity when they are continually pitching from the stretch — and he’s allowed a lot of baserunners tonight. Maybe that’s why Derek’s fastball is down a little.
@dude: good point about pitching from the stretch.
@Evan: The Boston game sounds great! I have no problem with a weeknight game. Any game is good news.
@dude in Af: DH probably is only showing full speed when he is needing it.
a-rods hands are so strong. he was way out in front of the pitched, completly fooled, but still had enough stregth to pull a line drive…all arms…..hate that i am complimening that guy
C’mon DH……you got this!
DH is through 5 @ 79 pitches and the bottom of the order coming up. I’m betting that he goes back out for the 6th.
Definitely. Let’s get him off the hook here just in case!
yea, i bet he goes one more. would be nice if he goes back out there with a least one run
@Dylan: Two homers last night and there was lots of sentiment that maybe Davis fixed his swing. Two strikeouts tonight and the “what to do questions arise again.” It’s not just going to click in one day and stay in. Even when he’s going good, he’ll have bad at-bats.
On this discussion, I go back to one point and one point, only. Davis is doing such a good job at run reduction that he’s still having a positive impact on the game’s outcome. If – or when – the team decides that is not the case, then they will discuss what to do beyond an occasional day off.
“Even brief at-bats against the Yankees are stressful. They make pitchers work for every out and every swing.”
Evan, think you could write this on a Post-It and attach that to the bill of Jaramillo’s hat?
Way to go, Elvis!
BUZZ KILL
thats what playing with a legend will get you. omar used to do that so many times in his prime… get 3-4 pitches into an ab let the 3b move back, and lay one down.
cs hurts
He seems like he’s lost the placement battle a few times against righties…….
Burnett: 93 pitches thru 5
@adios: thanks for the new toy to play with!
Now a lefty gets to him…..ok done.
is that the slowest hr trot in baseball?
this thing is about to get out of hand….ugh.
@Evan I agree in one respect. I, on the other hand, thought that last night his two strikeouts were more indicative of where his swing is at than the two bombs.
I just sort’ve think that if he’s gonna continue to strikeout 40% of the time and go 3 for 35 (or whatever) then something’s give.
Re: his defense – I totally agree. His defense is the reason he’s still up with the big club right now.
Evan, don’t forget Chase Utley on the list of best 2nd basemen. He’s having another terrific yr, but he is past his 30th birthday; he won’t last as long as Kins and Pedroia…
well…would have liked for him the get through 6 with 4 or less, but hopefully jj will pick him up and keep the line where it is
I plead ignorance on this – but my wife wants to know this: it seems that all the pitchers are wearing some sort of black necklace – is there some significance to this?
@Junior – titanium, supposed to help w/ energy, joints, etc. C.J. actually wears 4 braided together.
@Junior – I don’t know if there’s any significance or if it is just a fad, but those are those Titanium necklaces that are supposed to balance your energies or some such.
*shrug*
@Junior: if you notice, DH is out of the game and has taken his off.
@junior: I don’t know, but I did just notice that Holland took his off now that he is in the dugout. Not that that helps you in anyway,
Ayyone who wants to see him in the rotation right now should read up on the David Clyde story…….he a great prospect he’s just not ready for prime time yet…….the bullpen is good for now……
@scooper – sounds like another baseball superstition
I need a titanium shirt to wear to work then.
what a CATCH!
Wow… Touche, Evan.
Great play, Chris.
don’t know if they still do, but 6-8 years ago alot of the guys were wearing titanium inlays int their shoes.
Can we please DFA Jennings?
He may be a good guy or great in the room, but he’s a gas can on the field.
Has he ever kept inherited guys from scoring as a Ranger?
Let’s go all-in on the youth movement and get rid of the journeymen, veteran pitchers (Jennings, Eddy, Benson).
Let’s start the great 2010 now.
@Junior: I think it was some time last year that TAG was talking about those necklaces. He said he had tried one and he could tell a difference in his energy level. He also said that he doesn’t understand how C.J. can wear 4 – that he had tried 2 and it made him dizzy.
uh oh – guess we are throwin in the towel. here comes mandrigal
@scooper: seriously? where can i get em? lol
@phil i’m with ya if we were 6 games under .500
Gotta luv the luv that jennings is getting from Wash……not……..
@Evan – Re: Davis +/-. He’s absolutely playing the best first base this team has seen for a while.
I’m pulling for the kid to show something at the plate like he showed last year. My only concern is that this hasn’t just been a slump, it’s been all season.
@TD: If you really want a titanium shirt, you can get one here: http://www.phitenusa.com/
I have one at home. Hasn’t done me a lick of good. Phiten is the company that supplies most of the titanium dust necklaces that players wear. Me, I’m looking for pixie dust.
hmmm *chomps on his foot*
I think Jennings okay in a intermediate/long/mop-up role.
Its a staff that includes Jennings plus Benson plus Warner that is problematic.
We have basically zip from the right side.
Wow – Great play by Damon.
man we gotta get something going
@ bob….i think your forgetting our best middle reliever in o’day, he has been solid
@all: Davis is 23. he has hit for average and power at all levels. it isn’t like he has never hit for average. i still believe that he will learn from this and that he will come around.
@Evan: THANKS, let me know if the pixie dust works any better.
jennings is consistent in that he does insure those inherited runners get in…..
where can i get some of that pixie dust?
And one more note on the titanium: Why don’t the HITTERS wear them???? Hmmm….those silly pitchers.
@scooper we all hope your right, my one fear is that there are plenty of examples of young players comming up to the bigs and making a big splash their first few months. then once the book is out and teams learn to pitch to them, the hitter never adjusts to big league pitching. hope this is not the case with crush
Jennings has allowed 4 of 9 inherited runners to score.
@TD: excellent point! I guess you can be dizzy and pitch, but you can’t be dizzy and hit!
OK, 3 run BOMB to half the score and put us back in it right here.
If Davis gets a hit here I’ll look like a pretty big dope for starting the anti-Davis bandwagon for the night
Wow, Burnett had some choice words for Murphy.
Wow… he just looks LOST out there.
humph.
Sure, O’day has been fine, but we still have 3 scrubs from the right side.
CD needed to back Murph up there… but it’s gotta be hard when the umps calling those pitches..
FYI – Nuggest/Lakers tied at the half.
CD got hosed on two of those pitches.
I would think it is hard as hell to break out of this slump when the ump enlarges the strike zone 2-3 inches on the outside……I feel davis frustration……how do you influence the ump here? something has to give….
anybody read his lips?
@bob: sorry, not that talented!
@evan: at least he had a right to be frustrated!
seems like th ump has been consistent with that outside corner, guys gotta adjust at some point
@scoop- has game day been showing those to be balls?
Geezy Creezy.
that HR trot’s even slower?
and the hitters showing their youth and always seem to be one strategy behind the yankees…..
@adios: don’t know – I stopped looking at it when Holland left the game.
Good AB for Salty!
Great at bat by Salty there. He’s had his struggles like Davis, but his mixing his fair share of AB’s like that I don’t worry as much.
Another difference w/ Salty is that Wash told him to concentrate on defense. Offense is gravy.
Kins got his HR!
Whew… the team AND Kins both needed that.
Boom.
Good on Ian
good to see that
would like to see hambone get a here in this inning, to start his climb back up
Might have been low, but that pitch looked pretty good to me.
@dude in Afghanistan–are you really a dude in Afghanistan? Just curious.
Let’s see if the ump gives those outside pitches to Eddie (since Eddie likes to pitch there).
that’s a good inning for Eddie.
wow! i had heard he was struggling, but thats taking it to a new level
Chris has no luck tonight…
Goodbye Kris Benson
Nice job Benson.
Please see my post @9:04 pm
So do they release him immediately after the game or do they do it during tomorrow’s off day?
nice throw
Whoa, Nellie!
Can they release him during the inning? Or do they have to wait until the half inning?
GOOD RIDDANCE YANKEES. And don’t come back…
Unless it’s in October.
GO RANGERS! FIRST PLACE TEXAS RANGERS.
I hope that all of the Rangers’ minor league pitchers are watching how Holland is doing (and I think he’s doing just fine). They need to understsand that it is not easy to get big league hitters out. Derek has a ton of talent, but even he isn’t dominating yet. It is a learning process. If they can master the art of learning from other people’s mistakes, it will be easier for them when they get to “the Show.”
hi evan. richy here (new mexico).
13-1? what is up?
