The Depot: Texas Rangers Live Game Blog, News And Notes

I’m back and refreshed. Hopefully, for the Rangers, Josh Hamilton will get the same benefit from his off day today.

Just read Brad Townsend’s piece in the DMN on Dirk Nowitzki’s scammer/fiancee Cristal Taylor. If you ever see a Brad Townsend byline, do yourself a favor and read the story. The guy never misses. It’s also a reminder to me just how off base Gary Cartwright was in Texas Monthly in what reads like a bitter old man screed about today’s sportswriters. But if you read Cartwright, you owe it to yourself to read Houston Chron columnist Richard Justice’s rebuttal. Good Sunday morning stuff.

11:52: 1B Chris Davis is sitting again today, second straight day. This is elongated break (he’ll have three days off with tomorrow’s off day) is the most recent attempt to “fix” his swing. He is expected back in the lineup on Tuesday. … That said, things can always change. You come out of the lineup and people who fill in step up, there is no guarantee you will get your spot back. … Davis did arrive in the clubhouse today in a sporty fedora. If he turns things around, I expect he’ll be wearing that daily. … I still believe there is one more step beyond this rest period the Rangers could take and that’s to drop him to eighth in the lineup behind Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Davis has had a lot more at-bats with runners in scoring position, i.e., pressure situations than Salty has. Maybe one way to relieve the pressure is to reduce the number of pressure situations.

12:43: Josh Hamilton will see a sports hernia specialist to insure he’s not dealing with that injury.

2:07: In FOX sports news, I’ll be appearing on Ch. 4 this evening with Mike Doocy at 10 pm (or maybe a few minutes thereafter) to discuss the Rangers and baseball. What you thought I’d be on to discuss Copper River Salmon? Also, I’ve been told that FOX Sports Southwest’s John Rhadigan will be on the upcoming road trip as a “sideline” reporter. I like Rhadigan, especially since he’s my colleague, but I do feel compelled to point out the team went 1-5 last year during the trip he made to Baltimore and Boston.

2:10: Kevin Millwood allows homer to second batter of game, Adam Kennedy. Rangers will have to hold A’s to two runs or less the rest of the way to break Ballpark era record for monthly ERA (3.511).

2:55: Jarrod Saltalamacchia has stopped his experiment of going to the plate with uncovered hands. Apparently he doesn’t want to ugly up those hands with big old calluses and blisters. Or maybe not.

“No, the hands were already ugly,” Saltalamacchia said. “I just wanted to see how it felt. Turns out I feel more comfortable with the gloves on.”

Actually, it appears he hasn’t been terribly comfortable with or without gloves for the last two weeks. He entered today hitting .206 over that time period and he had 20 strikeouts in 34 at-bats. During that time, he also struck out 20 times. Saltalamacchia struck out in his first at-bat Sunday, too.

3:31: Millwood seems to have thrown an awful lot of breaking balls and changeups today and his fastball, when he’s thrown it, has been in the 87-90mph range. Last time, I averaged out the velocity it was about 88.5 mph. That’s in line with his last start, but a good mile or two below what he’s averaged at home this year. It was 91.2 mph in the season opener, 89.8 in his epic matchup with Zack Greinke and 89 or above in his other home starts to. Last time out, Millwood made 51 of his 98 pitches fastballs. Right now, above 100 pitches, the split is pretty similar. I’m starting to wonder if his arm is feeling a little sluggish.

3:41: Jason Giambi becomes the first opponent to ever reach 20 homers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. … But Kevin Millwood, obviously tiring in the 93-degree heat won an eight-pitch battle against Jack Hannahan to end the inning with just the one run scoring. Millwood must be done with 116 pitches. Well, unless Augie Garrido has taken over the Rangers. He let a kid throw 169 pitches. As somone up here said “A coach can’t buy a kid a cheeseburger without creating some kind of violation, but he can abuse his arm all he wants.” Me, if the coaches won’t act responsibily, I’d have the NCAA legislate pitch counts. I know Austin Wood probably didn’t want to come out of the game, but 169 pitches is just shameful.

3:48: A note on the earlier strikeout of Jarrod Saltalamacchia. The Nos. 7-8 spots in the Rangers order have combined for 141 strikeouts in 364 at-bats. That is 38.7 percent of the time. That is unacceptable.

4:00: Derek Holland balks in a run. It’s the second balk for him this year and I’ll tell you it sure looks to me like he crosses a plane of going towards home plate before throwing to first. Maybe something that will have to be addressed. In the meantime, though, Holland has faced four hitters and hasn’t retired one.

4:05: Oakland’s two runs in the seveth mean that unless the game goes extra innings, the Rangers will not finish May wihth lowest monthly ERA since The Ballpark opened in 1994. Currently, the lowest Rangers could go is 3.53, which would fall just behindMay, 2005 (3.511) for second lowest.

4:41: Bob Geren on his way to the mound. That’s got to be good news for Rangers. Sorry, I still can’t get over his first-inning intentional walk of Chris Davis the other night.

4:58: And so Frank Francisco’s streak without allowing an earned run is over, squashed at 28.2 innings by a one-hout from Adam Kennedy ( who also homered in the first). He hadn’t allowed a homer in 32 appearances dating back to last August 12.

Hey, Evan! I’m impressed! We’re starting early on a Sunday!

  • Ehren

Evan: You think there is still interest in trading a catcher to BoSox? I figure if Teagarden is going to play it’ll be in Boston.

  • bigskinny

So, I guess sportswriters don’t all get along? They don’t all tell the truth? Who am I supposed to believe EG? Where do we turn from here?

  • Dylan

@Evan – We talked about this a little two days ago, but let’s assume for the sake of discussion that the Rangers DO drop him to 8th and there is no improvement. How long do you think before they consider running with Blalock at 1st full time and letting Chris work it out in the minors?

  • JohnnyMel

Seems like the Rangers are finally starting to make some believers outside of the Metroplex:

  • Auditor

@Evan, thanks for the links above. Nice detail by Townsend.

I actually have to agree with Gary Cartwright (and yes I am too young to know almost all of the writers he mentions AND the newspapers). But most of the sports writing today lacks wit/humor and tends to be too fact oriented. As RJ notes, blame those real editors (and RJs piece makes it sound like all writers today are saints… whatever).

In my opinion, the thing that lead to the decline of sports writing was the lack of competition. 4 newspapers in the DFW area back in the day? Wow, how could that be a bad thing with everyone reporting the same topic they would have to be creative to have an interesting writing style. Darn real editors.

  • Dylan

    Game on.

  • Dylan

Wow.. No doubt about that one when it left the bat.

  • Dylan

@JohnnyMel – Can you give me some insight into what Olney says in that article? I don’t have ESPN Insider (and would never, ever pay for it).

  • Dylan

I sort’ve feel like this could shape up to be Millwood’s worst outing this season.

I also sort’ve feel like I’m the only one in here.

  • scooper

@Dylan: Nope. Just not much to comment on yet.

  • TD

I am officially predicting a 10-8 style ballgame today.

  • scooper

@td: I hope not. I think Millwood will settle down.

  • Dylan

@scooper… see, that’s the difference between you and me. Some people throw a dart and try to hit the bullseye. I pick up a handful of darts and hurl them at the board, hoping believing that the odds are in my favor that one of them will hit the mark.

  • B-A-S

    keep shooting

  • JustSaying

@evan how can you say with certainty that the Rangers are not shopping an outfielder in their quest for a bullpen arm? or are you saying they are not looking for a bullpen arm?

  • mike

regarding the dirk article, was there a compelling reason to print the photo of his house? not brad’s call, but where’s the need?

  • Tom B

Millwood at over 50 pitches and not out of the 2nd. Blalock error and Kinsler follows; So, what is the value of Davis in the field?
If CD stays sharp and fields would Kinsler be more ready? Would Millie throw less pitches? This could be the anatomy of a loss.

  • Dylan

Polar opposite of yesterday’s game so far. Everything clicking yesterday. Today, nothing.

  • JohnnyMel

    @Dylan –

But just for argument’s sake: Is it possible that isn’t going to happen? Is it possible that the Rangers are a good team that’s getting better, maturing right in front of us? They’re 23-10 since April 24, and they’ve posted a staff ERA of 3.70 in the month of May, the fourth best in the majors.

Here are a half-dozen reasons why we should believe that the Rangers are for real, and that the Angels might really be in trouble:

    1. The Rangers are a good team that’s getting better. They really haven’t hit their stride offensively, with Chris Davis off to a poor start and with Josh Hamilton having been on the disabled list for much of the first two months of the season. The Rangers have been respectable on offense, ranking ninth in runs scored, but they probably haven’t hit their full stride yet.

    2. They might have the best reliever in baseball right now. Spring is about to become summer and Texas closer Frank Francisco still hasn’t allowed a run. The Rangers have done a good job of protecting Francisco and the other Texas relievers, and in Francisco’s 17.2 innings, he’s allowed just 10 hits and walked five.

    3. Vladimir Guerrero’s slow start. David Ortiz’s slump has been the most notorious in major league baseball this year, but Guerrero — the anchor of the Angels’ lineup for so long — is also raising eyebrows in the scouts’ section with his poor start. Activated earlier this week from the DL, having completed his rehab for a torn pectoral muscle, Guerrero is now hitting .208 with one homer in 48 at-bats this season; the single home run is his only extra-base hit.

    4. The Rangers have the depth to fill holes. Texas will have the option of promoting some of its young players from a deep farm system, or perhaps using some of those pieces to make a trade for a starting pitcher. If a bidding war develops for an elite starting pitcher late this summer and the Rangers choose to flex the full muscle of their farm system in a push to win the American League West, they could outbid others for the likes of Erik Bedard.

    5. Ervin Santana’s stuff. Talent evaluators who saw him in his most recent start report that Santana is throwing well enough to win, with his fastball in the range of 91-92 mph, but that his stuff is still a long way away from the overpowering repertoire he had in 2008, when he was one of baseball’s best pitchers.

    6. The expected player exodus out of Seattle and Oakland. The Mariners and Athletics will consider trading some veterans before the deadline, in order to bolster their organizations for 2010 and beyond. This means that while the Rangers run through a second-half schedule that includes 21 games against Seattle and Oakland, they might not have to cope with the likes of Bedard, Matt Holliday, Brad Ziegler, Justin Duchscherer, Adrian Beltre, Jarrod Washburn and Russell Branyan.

  • Dylan

    @JohnnyMel – Thanks for that.

  • I'm With Incaviglia

@JohnnyMel – Thanks. Buster makes a lot of good points there.

  • scooper

sometimes TAG blows me away. i agree completely that manny shouldn’t be anywhere near the all-star game, but does TAG really believe that manny has any common sense?

  • Leemer in Austin

@JohnnyMel – Like the others, thanks for that. I saw the tease on ESPN.com this morning and it had been bugging me all day…

  • scooper

@all: it’s gone quiet! is anyone still here?

  • Dylan

@scooper – I’m still here. Waiting for something to happen.

  • Tom B

This has to be the inning for the Rangers. Millwood has to be finished. 92 degrees at the ballpark; this guy has to be getting a little tired. Andrus, Kins and MY. This must be the place.

  • Dylan

Wow.. How does that ball not get caught?

  • scooper

it’s about time something fell in!

  • scooper

@dylan: i thought you were the one who threw the handful of darts.

  • Dylan

@Tom B – Please knock on the nearest available wood.

  • Tom B

The thing I don’t like about AJ in the three hole. Slow and DP prone. Get Cruz up there

  • Dylan

    @scooper – I am. I succumbed to peer pressure.

  • Dylan

    Wow.

  • scooper

    @TomB: no wood handy, huh?

  • Tom B

Cruz is going to get splinters in his shoulder with that bat stuck up there.

  • scooper

@evan: do you think one of the reasons they are waiting until saturday for Holland to start is so that he won’t have to face the Yankees at Yankee Stadium? That sure does sound like a good reason to keep everyone else on their regular rest!

  • Dylan

I’ve been watching baseball for a long time, but I just don’t understand what constitutes a balk.

  • Phil

Holland just doesn’t have it today.

    Neither does the offense.

    Oh well, on to NY!

  • scooper

@dylan: think of a 90 degree angle (plate to rubber to first base). then draw a line at 45 degrees. on a pickoff throw, the pitcher’s front leg has to go past the 45 degree line.

  • scooper

correction: CANNOT go past the 45 degree line.

  • scooper

@evan: i agree, it does look like he breaks that plane, but I thought it was just our angle watching on TV. I knew it was close, but, more often than not, they haven’t called it.

  • scooper

now they are going to say that he’s hurt? aren’t they supposed to tell the ump it’s an injury issue BEFORE he gets to the mound?

  • Dylan

Thanks @scooper. Seems like that happens 97% of the time anyway.

Was gonna call BS on this injury until I saw the blood.

  • scooper

    way to go, Salty!

  • Dylan

BIG hit by Salty. Good to see him get a clutch AB.

  • scooper

did kins just chase that same pitch 3 times? or was there something else in there for one of the strikes?

  • Doug

That AB by Kinsler was one of the worst ever. Chasing 3 straight slider’s low and away from a pitcher whose only decent pitch is a slider.

  • Oz

same pitch. worse, it was the same pitch, same location for the last two strikes on andrus. easiest five pitches and two k’s he’s thrown

  • scooper

    THAT was a lot better!

  • Doug

Wow – Derek sure made quick work of that inning. Too bad it took him a few batters to get things on track….the game would be tied right now otherwise.

  • Dylan

Spectacular inning by the kid. Makes me feel better about starting him against the BoSox in a week.

  • TD

    Rallllllllly TIME.

  • Dylan

Wow… That’s the kind of break that can come back and haunt a bad team.

  • TD

A little break like that can go a long way…

  • Dylan

That slider is just making good batters look silly.

  • Doug

I can’t believe Andruw just did that. Really disgusting. Make the guy throw a strike.

  • Dylan

Suzuki has had a real nice game, both blocking the plate and throwing out runners, despite the bad throw on the Young dribbler.

  • Doug

Dylan – the Rangers are making that slider look really good.

  • scooper

I have no idea why he didn’t keep throwing the slider, but I’m glad he didn’t.

  • Dylan

    Excellent!

  • Dylan

Tie ballgame! Take ‘em however you can.

  • scooper

    this is more like it!

  • Phil

My reverse mojo worked! (see post 4:01)

It was all part of my devious plan to snap Holland and the offense outta their funk.

  • Dylan

Would LOVE to see them get that go-ahead run and put this away now.

    Pinch hit Davis? (j/k)

  • scooper

I don’t like that camera view from behind home plate with the pitch coming.

  • scooper

    @phil: that works for me.

  • TD

Amazing. Just an amazing, resilient team we have here….

  • scooper

you know that the A’s have to be saying, “Here we go again!”

  • Dylan

Good teams beat bad teams. What they do against other good teams isn’t so cut and dried.

That’s a major difference this year: The Rangers are beating bad teams.

  • Dylan

    Holland in the 9th?

  • Dylan

Really surprised at this move, going with Frankie in the 9th. Why not bring in O’Day or Eddie and save Frankie for if they get a lead?

  • TD

    FRANK THE TANK.

  • TD

@Dylan: because were going to win it in the 9th, OBVIOUSLY! lol.

  • Dan

Now we just need this game to go 25 innings and we’ll shatter that ERA mark.

  • scooper

@dylan: we won’t “get ahead” any more, we will win the game (either in the bottom of the 9th or in extra innings).

  • TD

    WHAT!???????????????????????

  • Dylan

Apparently I can’t say “Wow” again because I already said it and the boards think it is spam.

    Can I just curse instead?

  • Ben

Poor Franky, it had to happen sooner or later. =(

  • Dylan

    @scooper – Good point.

  • Doug

I hope the Rangers come back, but if you give up 2 HR’s to a guy like Kennedy, you deserve to lose. Incredible.

  • Doug

Dylan – in answer to your question, if the Rangers get a lead, then the game is over.

  • scooper

@TD: was that “WHAT!?..” to me or to the HR?

  • Tom B

Wash is managing with his gut again. Thjat isn’t always good. Usually your primo closer does not come in during a tie at home.

  • Dylan

Well, at least it won’t be a blown save.

  • scooper

@dylan: think positive, it will be a win! and you are right, no blown save.

  • Dylan

    I LOVE this move.

  • Dylan

I promise I typed that before the ball dropped in.

  • scooper

@TomB: in the 9th in a tie game (or in extra innings) at home, he either pitches in a tie game or he doesn’t pitch. the second we get a lead, we win.

  • Dylan

Damnit. Ian has not had a good day.

  • Dylan

Tough loss. Still, great series. Bring on the Yankees!

  • Tsing Sao

There should be a great explanation to bring Frankie – Frank on an even game. Either you’re absolubtely convinced your bottom ninth will make it happend or what? What if we don’t score, would you bring him to pitch another inning? Bringing Crush to cover 1st base was a good move, bringing Francisco in a non save situation mekes me wonder… and you start the inning with Josh Hamilton who, by the way is injuried.

Just Venting and wondering about MOMENTUM killers.

  • C.J.

    SH*T!!

  • Tom B

Wonder what O’Day and CJ are thinking? We are the Prep guys; Frankie is the surgeon.

  • TD

    @scooper: The HR.

  • scooper

    3 out of 4 ain’t bad.

  • Tom B

Scooper: You still leave two very good guys waiting out in the bullpen.

  • scooper

@TsingSao: if the game is tied going into the 9th, there will be no save situation. as soon as we get ahead, it is over. or, in this case, when they score and we don’t, it is over.

  • scooper

@TomB: yes, but you’ve used your “best” rather than “very good”. would you rather use “very good” and lose, or do you want to give it your best shot to prolong the game?

  • Tsing Sao

scooper, with all the respect, that’s a very mediocre way to put things up. In my mind, if you win today you go out of town with a HUGE momentum (4 game sweep of a division rival?) to face contenders (NYY & BOS). Today your momentum ‘could’ get down because:

    a) You lost a home
    B) with your “ace”
    c) using your closer on a non save situation

The next series is a very good way to determine if we can be contenders or ppretenders… and for the most part will show you how mentally prepared are these players.

    Good luck on the road!

  • scooper

@TsingSao: Wash brought in his best guy in an effort to keep them from scoring. If he brought in anyone else, and we lost, he would be second-guessed forever for NOT bringing in Frankie for the same reasons that you are using. At that point in the game, there would not be a “save” situation. Frankie either pitches in a tie game, or he doesn’t pitch at all.
Should he have brought someone else in in an effort to win the game? Wash brought in his best available pitcher.

  • Tsing Sao

tie game, at home, you don’t bring in your closer… period. you bring your very good arms of O’day, Eddie or (god, forgive me) CJ, he wont be questioned for those moves, because if you DONT score you still loose him for the game, or do you make him pitch the 10th?

  • scooper

doing it your way, Frankie would not have pitched in this game at all. is that what you are saying should have happened? Use everyone else, but not Frankie?

  • Tsing Sao

I bring Frankie with a man on base, that’s what Im saying… otherwise I stick to the bullpen. thanx.
