2B Ian Kinsler and  OF Josh Hamilton continue to lead at their respective positions in the latest round of All-Star balloting.

2:15: OF Brandon Boggs is here, but OF Josh Hamilton isn’t. Hamilton is currently seeing sports hernia specialist Dr. John Preskitt to rule out the possibility of such an injury. Boggs is here as insurance.

2:28: Tarp now on field. Expecting a little of the wet stuff I’m afraid. Forecast was iffy for tomorrow night, but no so much tonight. Maybe just an afternoon shower headed this way.

2:35: Vote for Rangers May Player of the Month here.

3:57: Tarp off. Batting practice commencing.

4:09: Josh Hamilton going on the DL with an abdominal strain that may or may not be a sports hernia. Rangers will wait a week or two before making a determination if he will have surgery. At present, the most accurate projection is he could be out two weeks or two months.

6:38: Chris Davis’ latest attempt at slump-busting: He’s turned to the Magic Thong. He also had a long conversation with an unnamed A’s slugger who may have used the slump-busting trick in the past.

6:47: To answer some questions about the use of Hank Blalock and not Andruw Jones today, let me explain: Blalock probably won’t play tomorrow or Thursday against left-handed pitchers , so manager Ron Washington wanted to get him in the lineup. Ditto OF David Murphy. Washington also needed to get 1B Chris Davis back in the lineup after two games (three days) off. The only choice would have been to play him at DH, which is what Washington did last week. He reversed his course this week. As we’ve mentioned before, he can be unpredictable.

6:56: Vicente Padilla steps off mound with wrong foot for the second time this season, balks in a run, hits Mark Teixeira. Yep, it’s gonna get interesting. Teixeira is no fan of Padilla’s especially since he believes some of Padilla’s hit batters during the duo’s time in Texas together resulted in Teixeira getting hit with payback pitches.

7:19: With Josh Hamilton out, expect Ron Washington to try a lineup that features Andruw Jones in the No. 3 spot (or Hank Blalock when the opponent is right-handed) and Nelson Cruz hitting fourth. With each passing day, Washington is growing more confident in Cruz as the cleanup man. And by simply swapping out Jones and Blalock whenever possible it impacts as few as possible other bats.  Washington also said he expects Jones to play some more outfield in Hamilton’s absence. Jones would swap positions with David Murphy on those days, but would likely remain in the No. 3 spot in the order. Washington wants to leave Michael Young in the No. 2 spot because he is most effective there.

7:24: Also, Washington made it clear that while Hamilton is out, Marlon Byrd will be the center fielder. Brandon Boggs is here as a backup.

7:25: A throwing error by Jorge Posada ends the Yankees’ MLB record 18-game  errorless streak. Posada threw into center on Elvis Andrus’ steal of second.

7:38: Mark Teixeira coming to the plate for the third straight at-bat with runners on base. Not a recipe for success.

7:41: In case you missed it, Teixeira was mouthing “That was (bleep) (bleep)” after slamming his bat to the ground when he got hit for a second consecutive plate appearance. It’s the third time Padilla has hit Teixeira in 12 career plate appearances. Padilla began the bad blood in 2005 while with Philadelphia when he hit Teixeira after a homer.

7:44: And then you saw Teixeira go out of the baselines and barrel into Elvis Andrus at second base to break up a double play, right? If Andrus had been carted off the field after that play with a broken leg, who would you have to thank? Well, Padilla would get at least an assist. No way Teixeira goes in that hard if not getting retribution for being hit.

7:51: I’m going to say that Washington has a lot of confidence in LHP Derek Holland to bring him in here in the fourth down by two runs. But I’m also going to say it’s a huge vote of “no confidence” in RHP Kris Benson. Benson hasn’t pitched since last Wednesday and is the freshest arm in the bullpen. If not to pitch in this situation, why is he here? To pitch when games become blow outs?

8:00: My bad. I thought the dugouts were warned after the second HBP by Padilla. Thus the reason for Teixeira getting retribution on basepaths. I’m not certain why they didn’t at that point. And I’m not certain I’m crazy about A.J. Burnett head-hunting on Nelson Cruz.

8:18: Suppose this score holds up. Yankees will have won three of the four meetings between the teams with each win coming by at least six runs. That is ominous to me.

8:23: Check that. If this score holds up, the Yankees will have won three of the four games each by at least seven runs.

8:40: Toronto holds off Angels, 6-4. Rangers can’t lose ground to rivals in the AL West, so they’ve got that going for them.

8:56: Avmalone brings up a good question, regarding wins on this road trip. I asked the question myself in the luxurious press dining area here before the game. Won’t give you the answer so as not to betray any off-the-record talk, but I’m wondering what do you think is realistic?

8:59: I’m not sure why, after a 1-2-3 inning that took all of 11 pitches, RHP Kris Benson has been relieved. Perhaps manager Ron Washington wanted to get LHP Eddie Guardado work (he last pitched on Saturday). Not sure. But it’s worth asking about.

9:14: And now, on to the Post-Game Show.

guess who has two thumbs and loves a line score? this gal. nicely done, mr. grant.

  • James H

Guess the yanks doing a rain dance

  • Matt Maj

Any tarp sliding planned for Kinsler & Co. this afternoon?

  • jb

They were just discussing this on the Ticket – it looks like Michael Lewis’ ground-breaking baseball book, Moneyball, is going to hit the big screen, with Brad Pitt starring as Billy Beane: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1210166/

  • Matt Ryan

Somebody text or call Josh Hamilton and ask him kindly how is Doctor Appointment went.

    Surely it’s over by now.

  • Matt Maj

Well from the looks of the last series, it looks like they would be better off making a movie about the genius of Nolan’s baseball philosophy. POW POW!!!

  • Jed E.

Will Elvis move back to the #2 spot in the lineup?

  • Vatt Vaj

    That was weak.

    POW!

  • adiosmofo

I cannot believe this game is not on TV in Austin

  • pirate

i am ready to get this on! lets go rangers.

  • GhettoBear04

@jb: that’s been known for a while. if you go to lonestarball.com and search for it, there’s even more info about it, including other cast members and info about the plot.

  • scooper

@evan: no home run pool tonight?

  • Ryans Dad

    Greetings everyone, GO RANGERS

  • obagain

    Come on padilla, settle down.

  • adiosmofo

Perfect to slide Kinsler down to #3 spot. But instead we get Hank.

  • Evan Grant

@All: Sorry about the lack of a home run pool tonight. Got involved with Hamilton story and neglected to put up a pool. Can’t be so sloppy. Will remember tomorrow night. Based on the lack of winners recently, I detect mental fatigue out there anyway. Maybe you guys could use a night off.

  • becca

THERE it is! back that punk off the plate! i mean, technically, it wasn’t the bean ball, but it’s fun to see it back on the field

  • obagain

It would have been nice to see elvis in leadoff and let kins hit 3 but wash is set with kins at laedoff.

  • adiosmofo

@EG: any insight on decision this time to start Hank over AJ? And the decision to put Hank in the 3 spot.

  • Ryans Dad

    whew

  • adiosmofo

    Stolen from LSB:

Blalock vs Burnett .100/.250/.100 in 12 PAs

AJ vs Burnett .286/.469/.600 in 49 PAs

  • obagain

Looks like burnett is going to come inside to combat padilla pitching inside.

  • Raoul

the Hank decision is even more perplexing in that 1.) it’s the exact opposite decision of the one he made last time Burnett pitched (AJ played, Hank sat), and 2.) Hank’s been sitting mucho lately.

  • Ryans Dad

I think he’s looking at the homerun possibilities in right field.

  • Dylan

Hey, have you guys heard that Chris Davis continues to maintain a great attitude?

Well, just hang on, Josh Lewin will mention it 4 or 5 more times tonight.

  • obagain

ryans dad, so you bat a guy that is hitting 186 points lower hoping for a HR?
And we wonder why these guys are always swinging for the fences?

  • adiosmofo

I’ve moved from feeling bad for CD, to feeling uncomfortable, to thinking now it’s just silly

  • obagain

Part of the K is on wash, he had the runner go and davis swung to help protect the runner. I dont know if it would make a difference by why put a struggling player in that situation?

  • obagain

And I thought the rangers made some stupid base running mistakes.

  • Ryans Dad

    That was definitely boneheaded.

  • Ryans Dad

Obagain, I wouldn’t I was just trying to help explain what might be going through Wash’s head when he filled out the lineup.

  • obagain

Ryans dad, I know but it gives us a little insight into the thought process which I believe is flawed.

  • adiosmofo

I made the comment about the CD thing being silly before I read about the thong. Good grief

  • Ryans Dad

This could be a long, long game.

  • adiosmofo

Question for the crowd: assuming Nellie Cruz stays on his same pace to the all star break, is he an all star outfielder?

  • adiosmofo

I think I’m glad this game is not on.

  • Dylan

Geezy Creezy… Pads is in headhunter mode.

  • becca

bean ball on tex is an ok reaction after the balk call. surely he got a warning, though

  • obagain

This looks like a typical padilla meltdown.

  • Ryans Dad

This is vintage Padilla we are watching tonight so far.

  • becca

    i still like the guy

  • Ryans Dad

That could have been much worse. Good job

  • becca

i mean, he DID still get out of the inning with only two runs scored…

  • Dylan

I’m with you @obagain and @Ryans Dad – The tough mental game that Padilla has played this year has not made an appearance so far tonight.

  • adiosmofo

all in all, coulda been worse.

but my turkey burger sure was good

  • scooper

Nope. Vintage Padilla would have melted down. Current Padilla got out of it OK. Plus, he would have drilled Tex in the ribs, not just throw up and in and barely nick him.

  • obagain

Becca, I dont mind him pitching inside but he was mad about the balk and took it out on tex, that will get one of our guys hurt.
The retaliation wont be a 80 mph pitch to the hip, it will be a fastball high.

  • becca

@obagain: good point. but there’s always the chance that they don’t come back and hit one of our guys. but at the same time, that’s just what he does and he always has been. it’s just the risk you take running the guy out there.

  • Avmalone

Anybody listen to the Rangers podcast in Arlington and notice how the guys said we haven’t had a pitcher go just two or three innings yet in a really bad game…Anybody feel like that right now?

  • scooper

@evan: did you see the ump issue a warning? I didn’t. And, believe me, if he was mad and trying to hit Tex, he would have done a better job of it. If the ump thought it was on purpose, with Padilla’s reputation, he would have issued a warning.

  • becca

unless padilla gets thrown out, i bet he’ll be around at least 5

  • obagain

I understand that is what he does but when someone breaks youngs hand in retaliation then what do you do?
There is a time and a place and if he hits another batter and the yanks score a few more runs they wont care about putting 1 guy on base.

  • Ryans Dad

    Nice

  • becca

well, if we had another pitcher to take his place or he had trade value, it’d be a lot easier decision. and unless management does something, it will stay the same. i’m not saying i root for his bean ball. it just seems inevitable. and i do worry about retaliation. but it hasn’t seemed to stop him before.

    and good job hank!

  • Ryans Dad

    JUMANJI

  • obagain

At some point they are going to stop pitching to cruz.

  • becca

and how great is it that nelly’s dad is there. great job, cruz!

  • scooper

    way to go, Nellie!

  • Avmalone

Wow that was awesome. Totally changes this game

  • C.J.

    Awesome… Burnett’s already at 56 through 2 2/3

  • Dylan

Crushed it too. Nellie is so money right now.

  • scooper

Do you think the guys were embarrassed by those last 3 games against the Yankees?

  • becca

the rally is ripe for davis to break the slump

  • Dylan

Crap… Chris can’t even hang onto his bat.

  • obagain

The guy must not like pine tar, great reaction.

  • becca

@scooper: well, it looks like they definately studied some more tape on burnett

  • scooper

Padilla is only at 51 pitches, he’ll be around a while longer.

  • Dylan

That’s a tough break for Chris, but he hit that hard which is a good sign.

I hear all that talk from Josh about his good attitude (and I’m sure he has one) but he’s just so demonstrably lost after each at bat.

I feel for him, but I’ve just gotta believe that he needs some time at AAA to take the pressure off.

  • obagain

It is tough on a pitcher to see the same team again so soon, the rangers are not fooled as bad this time.

  • Dylan

To add this: I know that’s not an original opinion (and I know Evan doesn’t agree) but it’s just seems like it’s becoming inevitable.

  • obagain

    Nice camera work.

  • adiosmofo

    need a shutdown inning

  • becca

why is it that so many away games the radar/pitch tracker doesn’t work? josh says it’s ‘technology’ but is it just that some ballparks don’t want visiting teams to use it? or is it legitamately a tech issue?

  • Avmalone

Great shutdown inning by padilla after scoring 3. We need to see some more of that

  • obagain

I dont worry about the pitch tracker as much but I would like to know why different stadiums use different radar guns?
Arlington is known for it’s slow gun, why not everyone use the same so we know what the real numbers are.

  • scooper

    there’s your payback.

  • scooper

    and there’s elvis’ payback.

  • obagain

Speed kills, I love them running every time someone is on.

  • AJM

Why do the FSSW people seem to think Rangers fans want to stop watching the game so they can watch some reporter in the stands talk about something unrelated to the gaem?

  • becca

looks like the retaliation turned into a double steal. that’s fun.

    except for elvis getting hit.

  • obagain

MY with a chance to get his avg. up with RISP.

  • scooper

@becca: elvis is young – he can handle it (obviously).

  • obagain

AJM, this is the first visit to a new stadium so I will cut them some slack.

  • obagain

Did anyone read the blog on millwood over at the DMN?
Some of the stuff I found was really strange.

  • Evan Grant

@becca: I’m not seeing mph on the scoreboard right now, so it might be a legitimate technical issue.

  • Dylan

    Ha… TAG cracks me up.

  • becca

    TAG wins the hammy-pull pool

  • DallasManUFan

    I know this is a little late, but;

I’m not baseball historian but doesn’t 18 games sound like a rather short streak for a team record in errorless games?

I’m probably just being baseball ignorant…

  • obagain

Can padilla please slow things down a little?

  • obagain

Angels losing 6-0 in the 6th.

  • becca

    don’t balk don’t balk don’t balk

  • becca

oh. well, then there’s just hitting him. and some words.

  • obagain

Tex is not going to be happy about that.

  • Dylan

What did Tex say? I couldn’t tell.

  • scooper

Now THAT, looked like it was on purpose!

  • becca

did you guys hear that?!? TAG just said if you’re really that mad, go out to the mound. he’s trying to start a rumble!

  • obagain

You can bet one of our guys will get hit now.

  • Avmalone

Wow did any else laugh when they saw what tex said?

  • becca

he said “that’s effin’ b## s###” and something else.

  • Ryans Dad

That was payback for the Andrus plunk last inning.

  • obagain

Tag would have charged the mound, it was obvious that was on purpose.

  • scooper

@becca: TAG is from the school that says, “Don’t talk about it — DO something about it.” If you are not going to charge the mound, shut up and go to first base.

  • obagain

Becca the second part throw the ball over the plate.

  • scooper

    THAT was Tex’s payback.

  • becca

the yankees have the upper hand in this game it seems like, and in most games against the rangers, but they are all getting really upset. hopefully it leads to them losing composure. intense.

  • becca

thanks, obagain. i don’t read lips very well.

  • scooper

I am surprised that the ump didn’t issue a warning after that one. Either he is oblivious, or he is giving the Yankees a chance to retalliate again.

  • Avmalone

How can he put holland in there again? Very strange call

  • Dylan

I was just joking… It was pretty clear what he said.

  • Phil

Man, is Padilla the king of the meltdown inning or what?

I know he’s had a decent year so far, but the guy drives me crazy with all the hit batters, walks, etc.

My tolerance for the guy has been gone for a while, so it wouldn’t hurt me at all if JD decides to move him at the deadline.

  • obagain

Becca, I am almost deaf so I am pretty good at it. :)

  • becca

it’s still fun when tex gets all pissy. i don’t miss him much.

  • ernie

clearly the umps are letting the yanks get a free shot, as they should after the obvious hbp by padilla on tex

  • obagain

The yanks kill LH pitching and holland comes in with 2 on, what could possibly go wrong?

  • C.J.

@Phil: agreed, he frustrates the hell out of me

  • Phil

And…with his erratic-ness and failure to hold the lead, he just perpetuates the Yankees-phobia yet again.

  • Ryans Dad

Tex is a panty waste if that is ok to say here. He would have been in his rights to charge the mound. So why didn’t he, because he is scared…..and Padilla might carry a knife on the mound.

  • scooper

Wash had to get Padilla out before he kills someone! But I’m glad we pissed them off! That’s how it was with the Rays and Boston last year. When you get the emotions engaged, it takes the intimidation factor out of it.

  • obagain

Yea, the ump will let the yanks get their shot in and then he will warn both benches.
It should be a mandate before each padilla start you warn both teams.

  • relee

    Anybody’s better than Padilla.

  • Michael in LH

I love Padilla. I wish they could have turned that double-play on A-ROID so he could have gotten out of the inning scot-free after plunking Tex.

  • Dylan

I totally agree with what Ian said above. If Elvis had been carted off with a broken leg, Padilla gets a HUGE part of the blame for pissing Tex off.

Oh well, hopefully Padilla will get his head in the game in 5 days.

  • scooper

@ernie: No, the ump shouldn’t give the Yankees a free shot. He should have issued the warning after Burnett his Elvis. Then Padilla would have been ejected when he hit Tex the second time. By letting it go this far, they are just asking for someone to get hurt.

  • obagain

Salty has really gotten good at blocking the balls.

  • Phil

    “Ahhhh, it;s the Yankees!!!!”

    “We must melt down.”

Such is the Rangers battle cry for decades now.

    *puke*

  • Avmalone

Ughhh I hate the Yankees. I wish padilla had hit all of them

  • Dylan

    @obagain – That’s what she said.

  • obagain

Like I said, what could possibly go wrong.
Wash really needs to go, I dont care if we are in first, he dosent have a clue.

  • becca

well, that got out of hand quick.

  • Phil

How come the Yankess have to beat us by at least a touchdown every game?

Padilla set the tone, and the kid got spanked.

    Again.

  • Ryans Dad

I don’t mind the Rangers losing, but I don’t like them being shown up. It’s time to start a fight.

  • JustSaying

oh vincente you go and piss them off and look at us now……

  • becca

@evan: i guess benson can come in next inning then

  • relee

I don’t have a problem with showing the other team that you’re not afraid of them. But you (Padilla) need to have the talent to back it up.

  • obagain

Boy I am glad that missed.

  • Avmalone

At least they missed their chance to get even

  • scooper

I don’t care how pissed off you are, you should NEVER throw at someone’s head!

  • obagain

It is 9-3 and they made their point.

  • ernie

andrus getting hit by a curveball had nothing to do with any retaliationfor anything. burnett is a moron for throwing at cruz’s head though.

  • obagain

Scooper, he threw high enough to let him get out of the way but close enough to let them know someone could really get hurt.

  • Phil

I said it the last Yanks series…these games are over before they begin. The Rangers see the “NY” on the caps and curl up in the fetal position before the first pitch is even thrown.

    It’s like the Stars/Red Wings, Mavs/Lakers, Cowboys/Eagles.

I get so sick of our local teams folding like a tent to the teams ALL OF THE TIME.

  • Ryans Dad

Make no mistake Ernie, that pitch that hit Andrus was intentional.

  • scooper

@ernie: are we watching the same game? the pitch that his elvis was on purpose. And that is where the ump should have issued the warning.

  • Jeremy

This is not really the way to start a road trip, especially this particular road trip. Maybe Padilla should’ve stayed on the DL another week or two.

  • Ryans Dad

I heard the radio guy call it a breaking ball, but I don’t remember seeing it that way. I will go back and look in between innings.

  • Auditor

NY vs texas. Already know the outcome. Sad. How many people in here are really yankee fans, eh?

  • Ryans Dad

I’ll bet Damon is tired of hitting against Holland

  • becca

i agree that any time padilla pitches, warnings should be issued before the game.

  • Ryans Dad

    Nice.

  • Evan Grant

@all: Gotta agree with Ernie about the hitting of Andrus. It was a tight curve. Did a double take when I saw it labeled a curve ball on the screen, but in slow motion, there was a little hump in it.

  • Andrew in Boston

Dear lord, can we not get Jeter out? Does he hold some kind of secret magic over all the Rangers. He is hitting .529/.619/.647 against us this year.

  • pirate

maybe holland isnt quite ready just yet. maybe we are putting him into the pressure cookers too soon.

he’s a blowup artist now. when he pitches its like, “BOOM goes the dynamite.”

  • obagain

Evan, it looked like a slow pitch aimed to make a point.

  • Ryans Dad

    C’mon Crush

  • becca

well, at least chris davis is flying out now. baby steps, right?

  • Ryans Dad

LOL @ “BOOM goes the dynamite”

  • obagain

Angels coming back again, 6-4 now.

  • Ryans Dad

I think Madrigal is there to even the score. I hope anyway.

  • obagain

ryans dad, if he does he gets ejected, both benches were warned.

  • Raoul

    we have a crappy bullpen.

  • Ryans Dad

I understand that. Maybe it would be better to put Benson out there for that.

  • pirate

anyone else getting worried about being sweeped? if so then its RED ALERT time for us heading to fenway.

  • ernie

ryansdad, i think you are dreaming if you think a 69mph curve was a retaliatory pitch

  • becca

it sure would be nice to get an out this inning.

  • Ryans Dad

There is no way for you to know how fast that pitch was. The radar was not working at that time.

  • ernie

the fact is, padilla hit tex twice, once on purpose. tex took out andrus with a clean sliede that was legal.

  • pirate

    BOOM goes the dynamite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • becca

@ryan’s dad: i think benson’s spot in the line up is exactly for soaking up yankees innings after the ranger’s are down more than 5 innings. i can’t think of anywhere else i’d rather see him.

  • Ryans Dad

I think both Tex at bats were intentional as well.

  • pirate

to hell with Tex… he’s selfish. i am so glad he is gone.

  • obagain

Ernie, it was a purpose pitch, just to let the rangers know he could hit our guys if padilla was going to keep hitting their guys.
He didnt want to hurt anyone, just make a point.

  • becca

i meant 5 runs. not innings.

  • JustSaying

@evan if benson is the slop up man then what is madrigal? rushed because we won’t spend any money on our bullpen?

  • pirate

    mad dog is terrible.

i have total mind melt right now. someone please say something positive.

  • ernie

possible that both padilla hbps were intentional but you can only be sure about the second one. but burnett would not protect his hitter by throwing a breaking ball. that is NOT how it is done

  • becca

    first place texas rangers.

    there you go.

  • obagain

I have a feeling guys like aj murray and moscoso could be on this team very shortly.

  • scooper

I thought both pitches that hit Tex were on purpose. And Elvis was hit on purpose, too. Still, Burnett should not have gone at Nellie’s head.

  • Phil

    Unbelievable.

Does anyone on the Rangers actually get sick of being spanked by the Yankees?

    Anyone?

Pitchers serve up BP, and the hitters swing at anything as if they don’t care — every Yankees pitcher becomes Cy Young.

  • obagain

Ernie, he had to make a statement but he also wanted to get thru the 5th to get the w.
The second one was because the first didnt work.

  • Evan Grant

@obagain: Can’t bring back Moscoso without a DL move for at least 10 days. AJ Murray might be a possibility. Doug Mathis also. But if you added both those guys you would have to take two guys off the 40-man. At this point, I’m wondering if assigning Willie Eyre to the 60-day DL to create a roster spot might be an option.

  • Ryans Dad

And don’t forget, their guy threw at our guys head. That is worth a suspension in my book.

  • Avmalone

With all the double plays we’ve turned this why can we not get ONE tonight! Please?

  • becca

i don’t know all the baseball rules: say padilla gets suspended, or anybody gets suspended for that matter, do you move someone up from AAA or do you play with a 39 player roster?

  • pirate

    @becca

thanks for keeping me in line. being in first helps but i had such high expectations for tonite.

  • obagain

Evan, I know he cant come back for 10 days but after the 10 he will be an option.
I would like to see some new blood in the BP, it might not be any better bat at least we dont get the oh no, not him again, feeling.

  • scooper

@becca: you cannot replace someone on suspension.

  • obagain

ryans dad, padilla was the one that started it and for a stupid reason. Baseball would not suspend him unless he actually hit him.
You have to expect someone to get hurt when padilla is throwing at everyone.

  • obagain

Angels lose so at least we wont lose any ground in the division.

  • The Beer Guy

Hey guys, I’ve posted here once in a while, but I’ve been more a regular over at the DMN blog this year (and last year, under a different name). Anyway, I’m a bit fed up with the tone/nature of a lot of readers’ posts over there (snide comments, haters, juvenile idiots), so I’m going to try here to find a community of real Rangers fans.

    Tough game tonight :(

  • scooper

@thebeerguy: I hope you like it here, but I think we have some Yankees’ fans sitting in tonight.

  • pirate

    (power down)

  • pirate

    @the beer guy

the whole dallasnews forum areas are terrible.

  • obagain

Beer guy, I am on that blog when they have them and come here when they dont.

  • becca

i’m surprised tex didn’t try to trip cruz on his way to first. he still seems to be bitter.

  • obagain

Tex was always bitter when he was here.

  • Ryans Dad

Who in here is a Yankee’s fan?

  • becca

yeah. i remember that. good to see he got over it. stand up guy, that tex.

  • scooper

@becca: he’s afraid padilla will hit him again, but the joke is on him. I’ll bet Padilla hits him the next time they face each other, anyway.

  • Avmalone

    @Evan
Bad night for the first line score buddy. Boy that sure looks ygly

  • The Beer Guy

Thanks for the welcome. Yeah the actual live chats Richard does during home games are all right, it’s just the board postings…it’s sad when half of posters actually don’t seem to be fans! (Anyway, sorry enough about that)

I thought it was interesting that Tex was laughing the first HBP (as if saying “Yep, that’s Vinny”). Changed his tune the second time, eh?? Definitely think the Burnett retort toward Cruz’s head was ridiculous.

  • Evan Grant

@The Beer Guy: We are happy to have you.

@obagain: We’d love to keep you.

We are trying to build a community website/forum/blog (wefolog?) that caters to interested, engaged Rangers fans who are passionate about their club, but civil and courteous in their tone. If there is anything we can do to insure your regular returns, let us know. We try to please.

  • The Beer Guy

@obagain: Hey nice to see you. Yeah I read your commentary today. Interesting, although I may not agree with 100%, appreciate your effort. Some idiotic responses from the peanut gallery as usual though, unfortunately…

  • obagain

If he had only hit tex I doubt he would have done it but padilla was throwing in on everyone.

  • Evan Grant

@Avmalone: Good thing, though, I get to see if it breaks over into another line with double-digits. Hopefully, we aren’t headed for triple digits.

  • becca

if benson gets a shut out inning, i might have to stop talking about him so badly. man, who would have thought?

  • Ryans Dad

    True dat EG.

  • Avmalone

I was hoping we could take 2 of 3 from the yanks. No way with pettite and sabathia. Oh well maybe we can sweep Boston. Ha

  • becca

well, huh. sometimes it’s ok to be wrong about a guy. (benson, that is. i wouldn’t trust any of you to pitch even if the rangers are down 3-12)

  • obagain

Beer guy, this year is a perfect example.
He is really pitching great, right?
He had 5 starts in april and went 2-3 with a 2.39 era.
In may he had 6 starts with a 3.59 era, his record? 2-2.
He is called a hard luck pitcher because of no run support, seems logical.
So with 3.50 era he should do well if the rangers could score just 4 runs a game for him.
In 7 of his 11 starts the rangers have scored 4 or more.
No matter what he is a pitcher that just keeps his team in games, good for a 3-4 guys but terrible for a 1-2 guy.

  • CJ Love

My recent disgust with Tex leads me to ask this question – who is the most hated current player in baseball? I’m sure there will be tons of Steriod-related answers, but Tex tops my list because A. He’s a whiner, B. He’s arrogant, and C. He tries to act like a “family man” to the press but really is simply an a-hole in person (and yes, I’ve met him a couple of times and he couldn’t care less about the fans)

  • obagain

Actually his april record was 2-2 not 2-3.

  • The Beer Guy

@obagain, you’re right in that sense…he’s never really struck me as a 1-2 guy (maybe only for the really bad Rangers in the last 2-3 years)…he wasn’t in Atlanta (he was the 4th starter wasn’t he?), don’t remember about Cleveland…solid guy, yes…ace, probably not

  • Ryans Dad

I am happy with Davis’ AB’s tonight. Much better than usual.

  • scooper

At least CD is hitting the ball instead of striking out. I think he’s about to get hot.

  • obagain

Beer guy, yes he was the 3-4 guy in atlanta but in cleveland he only won 9 games and had a 2.39 era, cleveland won 93 games that year so it is strange a guy that leads the league in era only wins 9 games.

  • The Beer Guy

Now that Jeff Kent has retired (couldn’t STAND that jerk), I’d have to agree that Tex is my least favorite/most hated player…definitely has a bad attitude, terribly selfish, and it shows in his facial expressions. Runners-up include K-Rod & A-Rod. Burnett is a jerk, too.

  • The Beer Guy

Why not keep Benson in there? That’s odd.

  • obagain

Bonds used to be my least favorite, now it is arod.

  • Ryans Dad

Say Hey, It’s Ole “Every Once in a While” Eddie. Good for him.

  • becca

evan, i was wondering that too. i mean, the guy did what he was supposed to last inning.

  • Avmalone

    @Evan
I know wash is trying to get some pitchers some work, but shouldn’t we have saved maybe holland and eddie for later in the series/road trip

  • obagain

Beer guy, who knows what wash is thinking.
We are in a long stretch of very good teams and he is going to tire out the BP in the first game, makes no sense.

  • becca

maybe wash is doing a team building thing. one guy in the bullpen messes up, everyone gets to pay. it’s like the bullpen equivalent of running laps?

  • Ryans Dad

Those Yank’s are jerks, throwing bats at innocent women in the stands.

  • scooper

Holland is pitching Saturday, so he wouldn’t have left him in longer.

  • becca

@ryans dad: it’s payback for when chris davis did it, i think.

  • Ryans Dad

    That makes sense.

  • Ryans Dad

Nice job of all the guys sitting around her, bailing out and leaving her to take one off the noggin.

  • JustSaying

@scooper where are those damn yankee fans? off with their heads……..

  • scooper

@ryansdad: and did you see the guy next to her laughing?

  • Leemer in Austin

I’m picking what is possibly the worst night to express this opinion, but jeez… Has any Ranger pitcher ever been put under the microscope more than Padilla? Ok – possibly Chan Ho Park, so let me rephrase:

Has any other SUCCESSFUL pitcher ever been as castigated as this guy? I love having a guy with the ‘nads to pitch inside – or to send a message.

He may be more proactive (rather than reactive) than other pitchers, but I’ll take it. Yes, I understand the whole “what if one of our guys gets hurt in retribution” argument, but I find it nice to have a pitcher who is afraid of no one.

    Just my two cents.

Of course, since I am in Austin, while typing this comment, someone might have been hit in retaliation after the official “warning”. If so, I’ll take Pepe Frias in the homer pool for the remainder of the year.

  • Per EG - Josh Hamilton to DL

[...] Per EG – Josh Hamilton to DL [...]

  • Ryans Dad

Yeah, I saw that. But you have to admit that seeing someone take a 34″ piece of Maple off the dome is hilarious!

  • becca

i think i’d rather take a bat being thrown at me than a chair from the bullpen. but that’s just me.

  • The Beer Guy

I like it, Leemer, wish more pitchers still did that. I do think that Padilla tends to do it at bad times (2 men on and 1 out, etc.). Best of my recollection, you used to make a statement or retaliate with no men on base. He has a balk problem, too.

  • obagain

Leemer, I like the pitchers going inside to move a player off the plate but he hits guys when he give up a single or the ump doesnt give him a strike or like tonight he balks in a run so he hit a guy.
    That is just stupid baseball.

  • Leemer in Austin

@obagain: I agree in that Padilla does choose some odd times to plunk a guy. Tex’s second tonight comes to mind. However, you take the good with the bad, and I’d have to say his good far outweighs his bad (over the course of his Texas tenure).

I’m trying to think of the last guy the Rangers had that was not afraid to throw inside while hitting a few (Nolan excluded) that didn’t have a well documented control problem. Thoughts, anyone?

And beer guy? Welcome to the good site.

  • JustSaying

Vincente reminds me of “Scarface” when he’s getting beat…….he loves going down and getting shot up as he goes I think…..not exactly the type of foxhole buddy you want…….

  • scooper

@leemer: Kevin Brown? I don’t recall how many he threw at, but he had the attitude.

  • Leemer in Austin

@scooper – Good call. Brown would hit a few and then retreat to his locker to read some more Tolkien. Not sure why I remember that.

Charlie Hough – the GREAT Charlie Hough – would hit a few completely on accident and then go have a cig. Or three.

I keep wanting to mention Odell Jones, but I think that is more for shtick than anything else.

*Nod of the head to Scooter Feldman for his imbroglio with the Angels a few years ago. Of course, that was a one-time incident, but he sure didn’t back down.

  • scooper

@leemer: feldman was even ready when the batter charged the mound. there was no question that pitch was on purpose.

  • scooper

@leemer: not Ranger related, but I still feel sorry for the White Sox pitcher who didn’t hit our batter when Ozzie told him to do it.
