4:38: Trying even more wing-dings to the linescore. I’m so excited. Meanwhile, the homer pool is now updated with the Rangers lineup for your swimming/guessing pleasure.
4:49: No word on Frank Francisco’s availability. Rangers won’t make a decison until game time and aren’t about to sdhare the health reports on their pitching staff with Boston manager Terry Francona. Francisco said he felt somewhat better Saturday. Edie Guardado’s Friday night talk with him probably helped, but you can also bet Guardado challenged Francisco to understand the difference between soreness and pain.
6:29: Again, we’re in for the most exciting two or three minutes in sports as the umpire have convened to determine if Mike Lowell’s drive off the Green Monster was actually above the read line on the wall and therefore a home run. The Rangers were losers on the only other replay in club history.
6:30: Didn’t take long. Homer stands.
6:40: I thought the idea was for Derek Holland to mix his pitches a bit better than he had been to prevent him from becoming too dependent on the fastball. But if that’s what the plan was, Holland so far hasn’t shown much variation. He began the game by throwing fastballs on 11 of his 12 first-inning pitches and has thrown fastballs on all but five of his 34 pitches through two innings. Perhaps this is why he’s relying on the fastball right now: His slider to Mike Lowell wasn’t very sharp and Lowell hit it off the top of the Green Monster for a homer.
6:43: Jarrod Saltalamacchia has struck out for the 15th consecutive game and has strikeouts in 29 of his last 51 at-bats.
6:57: Not sure which is more amazing, that Jon Lester is perfect through four innings or that he has seven strikeouts in 38 pitches.
7:03: Lester has faced 12 batters and thrown first-pitch strikes to 10 of them. That includes four called strikes. That will make the Rangers even more aggressive, knowing the guy is throwing strikes from the outset. That may allow Lester to get a little tricky and throw more pitches off the plate and get swings on balls out of the zone.
7:12: I would say you could start sending out the no-hit alerts right about now.
7:21: Just so we can get way ahead of ourselves … Lester has eight strikeouts through five innings, putting him halfway to the highest strikeout total in a no-hitter over the last 20 years. A Mr. Nolan Ryan had 16 in his May 1, 1991 no-hitter. Said Mr. Ryan also had 14 in his June 11, 1990 no-hitter. … The fewest pitches thrown in a no-hitter under AL rules over the last 20 years was 88 by the Yankees David Cone against Montreal (at Yankee Stadium) in 1999. Cone struck out 10 in that game.
7:28: Holland committed third balk of the season this inning. No matter how good it may have been in minor leagues, it’s clear MLB umpires ain’t buying the pickoff move. It will have to be changed.
7:39: Lester has 10 strikeouts and 61 pitches through six no-hit innings. Michael Young had a decent approach in a fourth-inning at-bat that ended in a strikeout, but that’s about it.
7:51: Wild prediction: When Matt Harrison returns from the DL – he’s through three scoreless so far at Frisco tonight – Derek Holland will slide back to the bullpen and the Kris Benson era will come to an end in Texas.
7:58: Obviously, the Rangers strategy of allowing the Sox to bat for a long time in the bottom of the sixth has paid off and thrown Lester off his rhythm. Michael Young doubles. There will be no no-hitter or perfect game tonight.
8:02: Matt Harrison is done after three innings and 41 pitches at Frisco. He allowed a run on three hits. I’m double-checking to make sure there was no health issue, but we were told to expect an outing of about 50 pitches.
8:06: Lester has 11 strikeouts and has struck out everybody in the Rangers’ lineup except Elvis Andrus.
8:14: Word from Frisco is Harrison is OK. I would think he’d have to make one more rehab start, but he’s been out such a short period that maybe the club feels comfortable going back to 75 or 80 pitches with him pretty quickly.
8:20: Mathis in game; Padilla officially flying without a net tomorrow.
hot wing-dings!
I feel like this is a big start for Holland. Pitch well enough to win, and on we go. But go out there and give up a bunch of runs and just have a poor outing, you have to wonder where his head will be the next time out.
I have faith that holland will be fine today.
Of course it would be nice to give him a couple run lead.:)
97, looks like he is pumped today.
And holland responds with some 97 MPH heat of his own.
Derek is pretty pumped, too!
Nice quick inning.
nice first inning for DH!
12 pitches, 3 outs; and his fastball was 96 or 97 the whole time.
Yanks lose today so boston can jump back into 1st so I am sure they are wanting this game in the worst way.
derek understands the expectations even if they are a bit premature……..
facing the storied sox where the rangers have been consistent losing…….
this could go a ways toward establishing his spot at the front of the rotation……just follow millwood’s 7 innings 1 unearned run…..
Is it just me or does boggs look like he slimmed down some?
we made that inning way too easy for Lester, with Byrd and Boggs both swinging at the first pitch.
The way the Rangers lineup is playing this, they may allow Lester to set a Major League record for least pitches thrown in a 9 inning complete game.
Replay has not worked in the rangers favor this year.
Only on gamecast….what’s being reviewed?
that WAS a HR, but DH is still looking good.
Not lets get the K here and get back on track.
Thanks Evan
@mike: ball bounced off the wall and they were reviewing to see if it was a HR. It was, as shown by replay.
Thanks to you, Scooper
When things are going bad everything goes bad, ortiz fouled it hard off his foot.
Maddox need to go out and settle him down, dont let the inning go bad.
He is not being agressive right now like he started.
Holland= NOT OK
Tap the breaks dave, he has given up 1 run.
They are hitting him hard. Especially those with low low batting averages. I know, I know I’m a bit of a pessimist.
that’s the way to settle down and get out of the inning. limit the damage.
You’re right, Dave. Wash should have started Kris Benson instead.
@doug: for once, I recognize sarcasm when I read it!
I think he should be in there. In fact, if he gets shelled then I would chalk it up to a learning experience. I look at the schedule and pencil his starts in as an L. I still believe he belongs…unlike Benson.
It might be time to let teagarden get a few starts and let salty work on his swing.
Point well taken — sorry for the sarcasm, Dave.
@dave: you are a pessimist, aren’t you?
we really need to start making Lester throw some more pitches. this is ridiculous.
25 pitches through 3 innings for Lester — I wonder what the record is for least pitches in a 9 inning CG?
No if holland can get another quick inning we are ok.
self proclaimed…but typically only as it relates to this team.
Holland is fine on his pitch count; it’s just crazy that we are letting Lester get by so easily.
Wow…..25 pitches through 3 innings….looks like Lester is bringing it. Hope we get it figured out soon.
I just looked it up and the record is 58 — so it looks like the 75 that Lester is on pace for means the record is safe.
I love seeing Pedroia swing and miss!
THAT was really nice! K of Pedroia.
Very impressive inning.
Now if we could just find a way to get that first hit, more will follow.
Well he isn’t having any trouble with the top of the order.
When they interviewed Derek yesterday, he said he felt like he had something to prove. He’s pitching like he really means that.
Evan – I thought he mixed his pitches really well in the 3rd and it showed in the results. The biggest thing he needs to work on, IMO, is getting the ball down. He’s a good one, though. Definitely learning and improving.
a 3-2 count, there is some progress.
I smell a no hitter.
Everyone join in and maybe we can jinx it and get something going.
If Lester (and the Rangers) continue like this, it’s game over. Lester’s stuff is too good, that if he commands it, he’s virtually unhittable. He’s commanding his FB, cutter, and slider tonight and making it virtually impossible. And the Rangers help him by swinging early in the count.
angels losing 2-1 in the 3rd.
Why so careful with ortiz?
seems like every time we send dh out we make sure to make him pitch from behind……
Lester is pitching great, but Derek is hanging right in there with him – 62 pitches thru 4 innings.
Bunt single? We have to get to him some how.
obagain – where is Mr. 1-player-5-tools when you really need him?
I hate that once you get to the 7th everyone gets macho and will swing freely just because of the no hitter.
I say get on any way you can.
Holland gettin some bad calls according to gameday
Ump score one for boston, that was not a balk.
@obagain: you are right. that wasn’teven that close. you can tell that he has changed the move a little to avoid the balk call.
Need another visit to the mound, he needs to refocus.
MY went over to talk to him.
Looks like the ump has 2 different strike zones, holland is not getting any close calls and lester is.
If he doesnt get an out this should be his last batter.
Naw. He needs to learn to pitch thru adversity. He’s still throwing fine.
He is past 82 pitches and the mgr is treating him like dirt.
That is a lot of pitches for a guy not in a normal routine.
@evan: if you look at this one, he has changed it. I was surprised that this one was called a balk.
Good outing to bad in one pitch.
Now lets ruin his confidence by pulling him.
Wash is again doing his best to ruin that kid.
If Holland can’t hit the outside corner with any consistency, he’s eventually going to have trouble. But he was doing good, but I think they left him in a little too long.
@obagain: I don’t think this is going to ruin DH’s confidence. and you are confusing me: first you wanted him pulled, now pulling him is going to ruin his confidence. which is it?
he’s not ruining what is not ready….don’t think wash signed the roster move calling him up
Not a good night for the free-swinging Rangers.
Even with a one-run lead Lester was owning them, and now that Lester’s been given a four-run lead, they’ll abandon any remaining sanity they have.
I smell a no-hitter.
Worst part of the balk is wash never went onto the field, way to help your players wash.
He has to at least show he thought it was a bad call.
@scooper, obagain: From Press Box, still looked like he moved foot toward home plate, but I’ll take your word for it.
I’ll agree with @JustSaying. I don’t think Ron Washington is ruining Derek Holland’s confidence. It’s clear that Derek Holland, like any young starter who has been hurried along to the big leagues, still has lessons to learn. That’s to be expected. The Rangers, however, do expect him to learn those lessons more quickly. Still I think three starts is a pretty small sample to pass any long-range judgments.
scooper, timing is everything.
If they pull him with only giving up 2 runs he has something to build on.
After giving up 4 let him finish the 5th and see if he can build some confidence back.
hate to say it but dh hasn’t had any success like any of our starters this year….doesn’t go late in games….doesn’t pitch 1 hitters…….doesn’t have a complete game win…..isn’t 5-0……..so when you compare what he’s done versus the starters then why are we rushing him?
Why are we rushing him?
@evan: I’ve thought before that it was borderline balk, and I could see why it was called. this time, he lowered the foot earlier and slid it in the direction of home, but it didn’t look like he broke the plane of the 45 degree angle. It definitely looked different than his original move.
Holland gets a start and then waits 6 days for his next start but in the middle he got 2 innings of relief, that is messing with his head, is he a starter? If so let him pitch every 5 days.
If he is a reliever then put him in the pen and leave him there.
That is why I think wash is treating him like dirt.
Doesn’t this HAVE to be Benson’s last game as a Ranger?
What has he done?
Not only a no-hitter, but a perfect game. It might be time to sit back and enjoy history. Hope not, but might as well soak up the thing that makes baseball so great.
Dont give in mike, some how some way they need to get a man on.
I think I mentioned earlier that Benson doesn’t belong. Can someone tell me why he is still here?
@Mike in Reno: Rangers are Top-5 in strikeouts and Lester is making them look foolish.
I expect to see a lot more first-pitch swinging, so yeah, a perfect game is definitely a possibility.
angels still loseing 2-1, lets hope that continues.
@ob…not giving up at all, just not getting anxious. If it’s gonna happen, I’m gonna soak it up, watching gamecast with my son. Of course, if Benson doesn’t get moving, Lester’s arm may tighten up.
Wow. Benson is such a power down. We should just throw in the towel if that is the best we can put out there.
The question is will benson throw more pitches than lester?
Wtf is Benson’s purpose? Has he given up less than 3 runs in any outing?
Uh, can we please release benson and make mathis our long reliever. Also, how bout we use his roster spot on Thomas Diamond. I wanna see how he does in the bigs.
Benson’s been great.
If nothing else good happens, at least any illusions the staff has about the status of Benson have to be erased. Surely he gets DFA’ed soon. Bring on Mathis.
j/k about the roster spot. Forgot about Harrison
Harrison is making a rehab start in frisco.
3 innings, 3 hits 1 run, 2 walk and 5 k’s.
no perfect game, no no-hitter.
Buy that man a beer! good by no-no.
Way to go MY……Go Rangers.
Thank you MY.
At least one Ranger shows some pride.
MY is MY Hero
@evan: out after 41 pitches? does that mean one or two more rehab starts? assuming he is healthy.
I’m ready to see Harrison soon…..want to see if he is in the epiphany zone……….
And I’m looking forward to vincente tomorrow…..i know he wants to be a good boy and not hit anyone so that should be fun……….
When do we get to see vincente on the viral video?
Geez, 11 strikeouts on the night?
Rangers are gunning for Top-two in the league for strikeouts.
Is this season-long problem on Rudy, young hitters, all-or-nothing mentality or the perfect storm of it all?
Evan — Why on earth has Kris Benson lasted this long on the roster?
I think rangers mgmt will keep Benson on for no other reason to antagonize you evan.
What does Benson have to do to get pulled?
Why pull him? Let him eat some innings.
@Walrus: Even though Doug Mathis has warmed up three times over the last two nights, I think the Rangers are TRYING to hold him back as potential long relief for Vicente Padilla tomorrow. But beyond that, I have no real explanations why Benson is in and Mathis isn’t. It’s pretty clear that Benson has no future with this club; Mathis might.
@evan don’t be so hard on my boy evan………
Angels still down 2-1 in the 8th.
So much for holding mathis back.
Eck as a color man is the worst……..the man is in love with himself and can’t wait for his next word…….thought boston was classier than that…….
Angels lose 2-1
Angels lost 2-1, Jackson threw complete game, w/98 mph in the 9th
Eck is saying the complete game is gone and the shutout is long gone……HA! Harrison had 2 complete games in May and one was a shutout….and then McCarthy had a complete game shutout……..
That’s right eck the shutout is dead…….c’mon boston get someone on the broadcast that is informed…….
1 runs looks pretty good.
