Brandon McCarthy has a stress fracture in his right scapula, a similar injury to the one that knocked him out for a month in the second half of the 2007 season. After he struggled against New York last week, McCarthy complained of the sore shoulder. An MRI on Monday revealed the stress fracture. McCarthy is going to be out a while. GM Jon Daniels said it would probably be “several weeks” before McCarthy picks up a ball.
If RHP Doug Mathis is not needed out of the bullpen tonight, he will start on Tuesday. If the Rangers do need to use Mathis tonight, RHP Guillermo Moscoso would be the likely callup. Moscoso has been scratched from his scheduled start at Triple-A Oklahoma City tonight as a precaution. RHP Tommy Hunter is currently scheduled to pitch for Oklahoma City tomorrow and could also be an option.
F!
Well, that sucks…
Kris Benson’s sorry Ranger career lives another day I suppose.
Question EG. Now that 60% of our rotation has spent time on the DL, is it time to start questioning the thought process behind pushing our pitchers to throw more innings, live BP in the Spring, longer bullpen sessions between starts, etc….
Not to mention Frankie’s trouble started right after he pitched 3 straight days with the 3rd not even a save situation. Just seems like we have a ton of shoulder issues already.
If you think back to last year at this time, after the starting rotation and the bullpen put up about 2 weeks of really good numbers in May, the same thing happened. Starters were hurt right and left, and it only got worse from there. That was without an emphasis on longer games and pitching BP in spring training.
Now that didn’t affect Frankie, but it did put Millwood, Padilla, McCarthy, and almost everyone else that was a starter on the DL with the addition of C.J., who was the closer at the time.
So that makes it hard to tie this rash of injuries, which although it is early yet, still pales in comparison to what the pitching staff went through last year.
seems like benson or jennings should be in line for the next start??????????????????
The “injury prone” players are all injured.
McCarthy’s stress fracture concerns me because he has had the injury before. Is it a coincidence that it happens again shortly after he starts throwing his curve again? If not the curve, then it is probably an issue with his mechanics. Either way, we have no way of knowing what kind of pitcher he will be when he “fixes” whatever is wrong.
but harry’s coming back. wouldn’t he just pick up his place in the rotation? or am i missing something.
