Guillermo Pimentel: The Other First Rounder?

Guillermo Pimentel from Kiley McDaniel on Vimeo.

While the Rangers go into the 2009 draft with the #14 overall selection and the #44 pick (as compensation for losing Milton Bradley in free agency), giving them two picks before the second round begins (and yet another exellent opportunity to load up high-upside talent to the game’s best farm system), it is widely rumored that they have already bagged the elephant of this year’s amateur class by having successfully wooed Dominican outfielder Guillermo Pimentel, who turned 16 in mid May.

Pimentel is said to have plus power and an extremely smooth stroke from the left side, tremendous athleticism and a below average arm (as opposed to the Guillermo Pimentel that Rangers already have, whose cannon might be the best among all oufielders in the system right now).

The signing date for international free agents is July 2, but Pimentel is known to have a strong relationship with the Rangers already — a product of the intensified scouting efforts by the organization in the DR over the past few years — and he has worked out at the Rangers’ Dominican academy. In recent months, however, nobody has seen him leading to speculation by other clubs that the Rangers are hiding him. Having been beaten to the punch by Oakland on Michael Ynoa last year, it may be that the Rangers decided to pounce early on Pimentel — even if it means irritating other clubs — rather than risk losing him .

Are they ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE that he just turned 16???

  • Mike Hindman

Ehren: I’m sure they’ve taken steps to make sure. This is the type of thing where they’ve gotten to know the kid and his family very, very well over the course of a year or more.

@mike: While I don’t fault the Rangers for “signing” Pimentel early, its pretty clear that mlb is going to have to step in and fix the early signing problem for international FA. Otherwise, we’ll see 14 year-olds go into “hiding” awaiting July 2nd of their 16th year. My question is, what do you think the best solution is for all of mlb, and what is the best solution for the Rangers. Clearly the Rangers do not want an international draft. Do you forsee stiffer penalties for draft violations in the future? Thanks

There are rumblings that left-handed hitting outfielder Guillermo Pimentel, who almost seemed destined to land with the Texas Rangers, might now be talking to the Seattle Mariners. It’s believed Pimentel will get a signing bonus in the $2 million range.

i bet it is just a smoke screen to get mlb off the rangers back

  • Dr Pepper presents Batface McGee

Wait. We’re going to have TWO Guillermo Pimentel outfielders? Awesome.

If he signs, I shall dub him “Guillermito.”

    He’s built like Dave Winfield.

That kid looks pretty good swinging the bat.

it’s almost as good as having two Germans. i like the direction this club is heading.

Jonny, Nolan, Tommy, AJ, get it done. Invest your money this way, not high price CC/Tex’s of the world. You can get talent & depth in your major league team & farms to continue the machine rolling. It has started a year early. This is how you keep it going by pay guys like this.

Evan–As a high school teacher, I’ve got a problem with signing foreign teenagers before they have finished school. Did Pudge or Juan Gonzalez ever finish high school? How does it work these days?

  • rdave

    Bobby,
Who cares if Pudge or Gonzo finished high school? Its the thousands of other singings that drop out and never make it to a 40 man roster that we should be worried about. Sure minimum wage here is better than there, but they probably aren’t going to be able to retire on it. That said, I’ve heard that the acadamies also focus on high school education (dunno how much) which could be better than what some of them would get outside of an acadamy.
