Road To Arlington: Rangers Minor League Report (6/10)

beavan_bakersfieldEight innings, four hits, two walks, three runs, six K’s. He allowed just one run through seven and then they sent him back out for the “extra” inning. He retired the Cal League’s most dangerous lineup in order in five of the eight frames.

Five wins, four losses, 4.30 ERA. Throw out his one disasterous start in early May, and his ERA is 3.48. Pretty salty for a 20 year old in a league and a ballpark that chews up pitchers and spits them out.

I don’t think that Blake Beavan will be in Bakersfield much longer.

Oh, and Julio is still bad. He is the irresistable force…and the immovable object. He leads horses to water and then makes them drink. He understands the peace that passes all understanding.

Triple-A: Oklahoma City 4 @ Albuquerque 2

Making his first start in about a month, The Lizard (3-4; 4.11) held Albuquerque to a run on four hits and a walk, fanning seven in six innings while LF Julio Borbon (.304 / .363 / .376) once again led the RedHawks offense, going 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring twice from the top of the order.

SS Joaquin Arias (.222 / .253 / .266) doubled in a 2-for-5 outing, driving in a pair and stealing his seventh bag of the year.

Double-A: Frisco

Off

Advanced-A: @ Bakersfield 5, San Jose 3

1B Ian Gac belted a solo shot for his only hit in four trips while DH Mauro Gomez — one of two Blaze players selected to the Cal League All-Star team — went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Bakersfield’s other All-Star, 2B Matt Lawson (.311 / .366 / .435) went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, driving in one and scoring once from the top of the order.

Class-A: @ Hickory 7, Kannapolis 2

Making his third appearance of the year, RHP Joe Wieland (1-0; 2.63) earned the victory by holding the Intimidators to two runs on four hits and a walk, fanning two in 5.2 innings before handing the ball to the white hot RHP Fabio Castillo (1.42 ERA) who finished up with 3.1 shutout innings, scattering three hits and a walk.

The Crawdads banged out a dozen singles without notching an extra-base hit. As usual, RF Mike Bianucci (.350 / .407 / .637) led the way with a 2-for-4 outing, adding his sixth stolen base of the year and SS Leury Garcia went 2-for-3.

So who pitched for the Blaze? Sorry I don’t recognize the photo or follow Bakersfield’s starting rotation closely enough to know who pitched last night. Whoever it is, nice to see The Lizard, Weiland, Castillo, and “Mystery Man” all pitch so well on the same night.

Blake Bevean pitched for the Blaze if I’m not mistaken.

  • Clint

Thanks Willis (and MJH for the update with Blake’s name). I was hoping that’s who it was, great to hear.

So, when is Bianucci gonna move up? It seems that all he does is hit…every day! And Bakersfield could use some offense.

    Mike,

Any idea what kind of velocity Beavan has on his fastball these days? It was reportedly around 96-98 mph in high school, but 89-91 last year.

Is his recent success a function of him recovering the velocity he supposedly lost on his fastball (assuming he ever really threw in the upper 90′s), or is he simply throwing better pitches despite a low 90′s fastball?

With Hamilton on the DL why hasn’t Borbon been called up yet? Seems like a good opportunity to give the kid a shot.

  • Hightower

I’m starting to think Borbon’s improved BB rate in Arizona wasn’t a fluke…

  • Mike Hindman

    Brett: He’s 91-93 now.

@Yamestown I agree with you 100%. A speedy guy who gets on base is exactly what the Big Club needs right now. From everything I’ve heard is that he is an oustanding defender as well. Why not give him a shot?

  • Rossometown

I think you’re mistaken on a “speedy guy who gets on base”. Borbon has improved his walk rate, but by no means is he walk machine. I could see him having a .350 ish OBP, and hopefully develop into .380ish at some point, but definitly wouldn’t be now.

@mjh — What’s going on with MaxRam? A slow start in AAA isn’t unexpected, but half-way through June… I figured his bat would have heated up by now. Injury? Too much work on C defense? Eyes too dry and having to blink too much???
