7:00: With SS Omar Vizquel one hit shy of tying the record for career major league hits by a Venezuelan native, Ron Washington said he wants Vizquel to break the record in Arlington and penciled him in tonight. Washington said he plans to start Vizquel once in next week’s homestand-ending series against Houston if he’s still short of the mark, before the Rangers head off to San Francisco and Arizona. (Becca has already picked tonight in her Vizquel Pool.)

Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw from Highland Park is scheduled to pitch Tuesday at home against Oakland. He said there’s an upside to the downtime, he said: “I get to hang out a little bit more.” Had plenty of folks over Thursday night and reserved 15 tickets for Friday’s game. He’s 3-5 with a 4.50 ERA, got popped last time out against San Diego – 2.2 innings with five hits and four walks.

Dodgers pitching coach, famed former Ranger Rick Honeycutt, said all the expected things about the 21-year-old Kershaw: “If there’s one thing, that’s been a little inconsistent. But you still see great things, positive upside. On-the-job training type thing. He’s got electric stuff. It’s coming down to command a lot of times.”

Kershaw didn’t think his teammates were going to welcome tonight’s temperatures in the 90′s: “They complain about the L.A. weather. Like, ‘You’d better get ready.’ ”

7:42: Byrd, he of the two-out triple in the second, has hit safely in 13 of his last 16 home games.

7:57: Padilla rarely puts himself in the position of a sympathetic figure. But after two up and two down, Orlando Hudson’s single off the first base bag made Vinny struggle more than he deserved. Ended with 67 pitches.

8:10: The Michael Young RBI single snapped an 0-for-17 streak for him.

8:23: For followers of the shutdown inning, Padilla used 19 pitches but got it done. (By the way, the sky to the north doesn’t look good.)

8:30: Lightning (following another opposite-field C.Davis hit?) and a rainbow and the Rangers need three outs for an official game.

8:38: Wind really blowing in hard from the south. Would take Ruthian effort to hit one to right.

8:51: Maybe the last meteorological note, but what looked as bright as a fire over the north stands 10 minutes ago is now dark in all directions.

8:52: Padilla done after five scoreless and 108 pitches. Enter Jason Jennings.

9:08: Kuroda exits having allowed eight hits in 5.1 innings. In his previous 11 innings against the Diamondbacks and Phillies after returning from the DL, he gave up only five total.

9:22: Teagarden has hit safely in seven of his last 10 games. After he caught Padilla’s win last Sunday in Boston and started tonight, Washington has maintained Teagarden isn’t Padilla’s current personal catcher. Even after Matt Harrison’s return next week, maybe he should start more than once every five games.

9:35: (Brief NHL interlude as the Penguins celebrate: what if Pittsburgh hadn’t won its last three while Philadelphia dropped two of three, pushing the Pens into fourth in the East and home ice in their series?)

9:39: Following Angels closed-door meeting following latest loss, LAA comes out and scores first in the first at home against the Padres.

9:43: In the ninth, the Rangers will be going for back-to-back home shutouts in the same homestand for the first time at The Ballpark and for the first time since 1981. On a couple of occasions, they’ve had a shutout, gone on the road, come home and added a second.

9:49: Jennings has thrown 47 pitches. Jason Grilli has warmed up but now is standing but not throwing.

9:58: Grilli in.

10:07: Another blanking to the delight of 36,591, and Padilla has won four of his last five starts, sandwiched by the unsightly outing at Yankee Stadium.

I’m giving NBC about 10 minutes to fix the hockey audio before I turn on Nadel et. al.

Since I can’t see how he’s doing, Jeff, I hope you’ll let us know if it’s good Padilla or bad Padilla tonight.

  • Last of the Romohicans

Seems like he’s “could go either way” Padilla through 1.

  • Jeff Miller

@Last: It was a shaky first, like in Boston, he’s unscathed after two walks and 26 pitches. Velocity seems OK.

  • Last of the Romohicans

Is the internet in DFW down cause of the storms this week? I’ve seen slow starts here, but – this slow? At some point, you’ll just have to start texting me score updates.

  • Stephen R

The strike zone for Padilla is ridiculous.

  • Chuck

Did Kinsler’s failure to break out of the batter’s box in the 1st look as bad as the radio guys made it out to be?

  • Jeff Miller

@Chuck: Must admit I was watching the ball.

  • scooper

@chuck: they didn’t show him running or breaking from the box, but it sure did look like he should have had time to get to first.

  • Chuck

Barnett said there was no excuse for him not being on first and Eric agreed it should’ve been an error instead of an out…

For a moment I hoped to hear he’d been pulled after the inning with Omar sliding to second as a message to Ian about his lack of hustle, but then I realized I must just be getting old… :)

  • Last of the Romohicans

@ Chuck – there’s a difference between sending a message and showing up a player.

  • DC

Ian should have thrown to second

  • Chuck

@ Last: You’re right of course, but I guess I’m a little sensitive to lack of hustle after watching some of the antics of our HS baseball team the last three weeks… Not to run this in the ground or anything, but didn’t Bobby Cox yank Andruw Jones out of a couple of games in his younger years for lack of hustle?

Nice hit by TT and back to our regularly scheduled programming!

  • DC

Padilla 67 pitches thru 3 innings

  • DC

CD has the third best BA on team in june

  • Dylan

Can they get to three outs before the skies unload?

  • Chuck

And lest someone misconstrue my last post, I work at a local high school and wasn’t referencing the Rangers! :)

Nice to see (hear) CD get a hit…

  • Dylan

Wow… I know it’s easy to pick on CD these days (and it’s been done by me from time to time too), but he does do some great stuff with the glove.

  • Last of the Romohicans

OK, I’m doing a rain dance.

  • Dylan

@LotR – Me too, but that’s just because I’m doing my special dance of Friday night solitude that I always do about this time of night.

  • C.J.

    Solid frame from Jennings

  • Chuck

Just watched the play by CD via MLB app on iPhone… wow!

As Berman would say (back when he wasn’t a total beating) “This just in Tommy… he’s pretty good!”

  • C.J.

    Alright HANK!

  • TD

MAN!!! I have never experienced my DIRECTV being out for this LONG. BOOOOO.

    Haven’t seen a pitch yet.

  • C.J.

@TD: I don’t own a TV. It’s called ESPN Gamecast, make it your best friend. It’s literally a second or two behind what’s going on on the tube as long as you’ve got a decent connection

  • C.J.
  • TD

OK…thanks….let me give it a try.

  • C.J.

Come on, Texas, this is as good an opportunity as we’ll see tonight to blow this thing open

  • TD

Yeah C.J. thats very cool. Thanks my friend.

  • Dylan

Nice to see John Krazinski… I mean Taylor Teagarden have such a good night.

  • Chuck

Is a 5 run lead enough for me to temporarily mute the radio and give the hockey game my full attention? I’d feel better if FF was available…

  • C.J.

Not a problem, dude. It’s obviously not as good as the real thing, but the ability to see stats, plays, spray charts, etc. makes up for it

  • C.J.

Nope, Cup is essentially in the Pens’ hands unless Detroit pulls out a miracle

  • TD

    Word.

    Hell yeah….5-0 on the Dodgers.

  • Chuck

Man, Detroit is really buzzing right now… GOAL!

    And I want Pittsburgh to win… :(

  • Michael in LH

    Pitt’s up 2-1

  • C.J.

    DP, hell yes

  • Chuck

I wonder how those whistles taste? The refs have completely swallowed them…

  • Chuck

Oh yeah, nice DP! I’ve got a potential ADD overload situation going now… Volumes of both games turned up…

  • Chuck

Anyone have the comparable ERAs when TT and Salty are catching? I know the sample sizes aren’t equal, I’m just curious…

Hockey side note: that was real close to a goal for Detroit…

  • C.J.

Man, this is an intense hockey game

  • DC

    awww poor red wings…….NOT

  • Chuck

Dang that was close but Pittsburgh did it! IIRC, according to Sturm that’ll be only the 3rd team in NHL history to win a game 7 on the road…

Anyway, here’s hoping the Rangers finish this one off…

  • Michael in LH

    Jennings better not blow this.

  • Michael in LH

That was a close one. Is CJ coming in to close it down?

  • Ehren

    Evening everyone!

  • Fred

@Evan-Thanks for the shout out, last night.
I’m here during the game, tonight.
    1) The Davis play a few innings back changed the game. Also nice to see him battle to thet double. I keep hanging with him.
    2) Goota give the rook catcher some credit from avoiding another Padilla meltdown and getting him thru 5. Look like Padilla was ignorning him when he came out early.

  • C.J.

I’m not going to speak too soon, but back-to-back shutouts would be amazing

  • Ehren

Gotta love the Pens skating the cup in Detroit!!!

  • Ehren

    Nice play by hudson!

  • Ehren

Wow, Gabe Kapler with a PH home run!

  • C.J.

Men on the corners, no outs… somebody better cross home plate

  • Ehren

@Chuck: still looking for the answer to your question. google is useless. maybe Ted Price would know.

    Ted you there????

  • C.J.

@Chuck: Yes, the Pens are only the third team to do so. The other two are the ’45 Maple Leafs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1945_Stanley_Cup_Finals) and ’71 Canadiens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1971_Stanley_Cup_Finals)

  • C.J.

    BALLGAME

  • Ehren

    HELLO WIN COLUMN!!!!!!

  • C.J.

And now I will say it: 2 shutouts in a row

  • Last of the Romohicans

    Feliz + Smoak = Halladay

  • C.J.

    Easy there, Romohicans.

And as for the two shutouts in a row at home… that’s the first time in 29 seasons for Texas

  • Chuck

@ Last: Careful what you wish for… Radio guys said The Doc left in the 4th inning tonight after grimacing on the mound. I’ve got no idea if it was serious or not, just passing it along…

@CJ and Ehren, thanks for looking!

  • Chuck

Sorry for the posts in a row, but Halladay left with an injured groin according to MLB app…

  • Last of the Romohicans

    @Chuck – groin strain. I want Doc going 9 in 1, 4 and 7.

PS – I may have had a few shiners this evening.

  • Last of the Romohicans

@ Chuck – post many in a row… we’re like A&M recruiting vs the DMN “longhorn” coveritlive blog

  • Chuck

    Mmmmnnnn…. Shiners…. Shiners are good…

  • Last of the Romohicans

so are shriners… help the community so much

  • scooper

@last: if we could get Halladay for Feliz and Smoak, I’d do that trade without thinking twice!
