5:58: The pool is open.

6:00: Don Sanders is at the game tonight. Is he a potential future owner of the Rangers? He’s not sure, but he is sure of one thing.

6:01: Jon Daniels said typed many interesting things in a chat with the DMN. … Also in the where have you been lately department: RHP Willie Eyre will start a rehab assignment with Triple Oklahoma City tomorrow; RHP Dustin Nippert goes to Frisco on Friday. … More trouble for the Angels. RHP Ervin Santana was scratched from tonight’s start at San Francisco with forearm tightness.

7:13: On the rehab front, RHP Frank Francisco will begin one on Thursday at Double-A Frisco. If all goes well, he’ll end one Thursday, too, and then join the Rangers over the weekend in San Francisco.

7:21: While we in the leering press didn’t pepper Ron Washington with any questions about the lineup (I was late to the party after conducting a couple of video interviews, so I held my tongue in case it had previously been asked), Eric Nadel did. Washington answered that he didn’t want to send a message of no confidence or panic to his players. That would have most applied to Ian Kinsler, who might have been dropped temporarily from the leadoff spot. As it is, the intended message apparently made its way to Kinsler: He worked the count to 3-and-1 against LHP Wandy Rodriguez, then homered to start the bottom of the first.

7:24: Interesting thing about the Kinsler homer: He hadn’t exactly murdered pitchers after getting to that most advantageous count this year. He was hitting just .250 (6-for-24) on or after 3-and-1 counts this season.

7:27: Maybe that HR breaks Kinsler’s slump. It certainly breaks ours. Mattio was one pitch and 14 feet off with his leadoff prediction (By leadoff, I mean he was the very first to make a prediction). He thought Kinsler would go deep on a 2-and-1 pitch and it would land 405 feet away. It was 3-and-1 and 419. I give Mattio the edge over Greg (leadoff, 2-2, 392 feet).

7:36: Mattio, if you are out there, you are going to have to email me to confirm your win.

7:37: Pudge Rodriguez gets a nice hand from crowd before first at-bat as he ties the all-time games played record for catchers. I hope he gets something nicer than a nice reception tomorrow when he breaks the record.

7:43: The always alert Ernie asked me a question today in regard to Pudge breaking the all-time games played record for catchers. He wanted to know who held the records at the other positions. Well, turns out that tomorrow, two of the nine position leaders will be in the stadium since Omar Vizquel (2,669 games) leads at short. The others: 1B Eddie Murray (2,413), 2B Eddie Collins (2,650), 3B Brooks Robinson (2,870), LF Barry Bonds (2,714), CF Willie Mays (2,676), RF Roberto Clemente (2,295) and P Jesse Orosco (1,252). It should be noted that Stats, Inc., does not have data for outfielders positions before 1954. It also doesn’t calculate games started at pitcher since 1954, but if you go by the last 50+ years, the record for most appearances as a starting pitcher is held by Nolan Ryan at 773.

7:50: Kinsler homers again. You don’t think it’s possible he was motivated by this kind of talk, do you?

7:53: Ian Kinsler now: 9-for-12 in his career against Wandy Rodriguez.

8:02: Through 17.2 innings in June, Kevin Millwood has not given up an earned run. He has given up one earned run in his last 22.2 innings.

8:04: David Murphy hits his first homer of the season against a lefty.

8:34: Nicer round of applause for Pudge after his homer breaks up Millwood’s shutout. Millwood went 18.2 innings before allowing an earned run in June.

8:39: Here are today’s draft signings: OF Braxton Lane (7th round), RHP Braden Tullis (8th), RHP Justin Jamison (13th), RHP Keith Campbell (15th), RHP Chris Matlock (21st), OF Kyle Rhoad (33rd), OF Jared Prince (34th), LHP Shane Zagarac (42nd), 2B Joe Bonadonna (43rd). This gives the club 14 signed draft choices.

8:50: Some chatter on blog tonight about Kevin Millwood’s All-Star chances. I’d say they are still long at this point. Let’s assume five or six starting pitchers are named. Zack Greinke and Roy Halladay (if healthy) are locks. Cliff Lee and Justin Verlander have to be close also. Then you get into Millwood, Edwin Jackson, Erik Bedard, Jered Weaver and maybe even Felix Hernandez. Gonna be crowded. He’s pitched like an All-Star, but to make the team he’s going to have to not have another bad outing between now and the naming of the team. Personally, I think the Rangers would love for him to miss the game, start the final outing of the first half and the first of the second (the club has a four-day All-Star break).

Please break out the bats tonight!!

  • walrus

More Angel bad news from today’s Newberg Report:

“Meanwhile, in the last 24 hours Scot Shields has decided to undergo season-ending knee surgery, Kelvim Escobar (who was going to replace Shields as a high-leverage righthander in the Angels bullpen) has gone back on the disabled list with a shoulder that’s still giving him trouble, Ervin Santana has been scratched from tonight’s start with tightness in his forearm (MRI results should come today), and Torii Hunter bruised his rib cage running into a wall and will miss at least a couple games. The Angels aren’t going away, but Texas has played itself into a position to take advantage of an opportunity that shouldn’t be going away anytime soon, either.

  • Evan Grant

@walrus: Yep, forgot to include the Shields note in the blog as it was announced yesterday and we didn’t do a live blog. Blame me for being a dolt.

  • TD

Hey Evan…has there been any talk or rumblings about any lineup changes? Kinsler out of leadoff, or splitting up Salty and Davis, the strikeout kings, or moving up Andrus. And will Teagarden get more time?

  • TD

@Walrus: Do you think it is more of a draw though? We lost Josh, McCarthy and have had Francisco out. I think it is the attrition of the season.

  • Evan Grant

@TD: Will address that in the blog proper. Think it is worthwhile.

  • TD

OK. Cool. Can’t wait to read it.

That has to be a HR pool WIN!

  • wes

    boom…hope your back kins

  • wes

its kinda bitter sweet to see kinsler lead off with the home run. glad to see him get a much needed hit, but also would like for hime to start taking line drive swings not hr swings.

  • Evan Grant

@TD: Your answer has been entered.

  • TD

    Amen Wes.

Congrats to PUDGE….I have to say he is my all-time favorite Ranger.

I remember how excited I was when I saw him on that cover of SPORTS ILLUSTRATED. “A KEEPER!”

    Alas…we did not keep him.

  • The Beer Guy

    Now that’s a good sign!

  • AJM

What did Brandon Boggs do to make Ron Washington mad at him? David Murphy in the lineup against yet another lefty?

  • TD

Washington answered that he didn’t want to send a message of no confidence or panic to his players.

SMART….but you could play the other side of the card and try and shake things up.

    FOR FUN:

    TD’s lineup

    1. Andrus
    2. Kinsler
    3. Young
    4. Cruz
    5. Byrd
    6. Jones/Blalock
    7. Davis
    8. Murphy
    9. Salty platooned with Teagarden

  • Dylan

    Congrats on the win Mattio.

Nice to see the rangers get a couple of runs early. Not that you want to assume you’ll beat the Astros, but it sure would be nice to see them get the bats healthy.

  • Fred

Best AB for Kins in a while. Worked the count, got his pitch.

  • walrus

TD, I agree, kind of a wash. But for the last month we’ve been hearing just wait until the Angels starters get healthy, and as of yet that just hasn’t happened. So at the very least when we are hurting they are going through the same stuff.

  • AJM

David Murphy is now 4 for 28 this season with 12 Ks against lefties.

And yet he continues to start against them, and is hitting 5th.

  • Dylan

Millwood doesn’t really have his best stuff but so far he’s creating ways to make things work for him.

  • TD

@AJM: I would love to see Boggs get some AB’s as well…..I DUNNO.

  • Jeffrey

well, maybe Kinsler IS out of that slump now

  • TD

    WOO HOO! So long slump??

  • wes

    lets hope so

  • Dylan

Wow… I’m ok with him hitting leadoff with his uppercut swing if we get THIS occassionally.

  • TD

@Dylan: this will only fuel his uppercut swing fire, lol…but I will take it too! What a fickle fan I am

  • JoseCardenal

Would I feel better about Kinsler breaking out of his slump if he hit two doubles instead? I know its weird – just worried he’ll keep swinging for the fences like he has been.

    Just me, gang?

  • DC

    I would prefer 2 doubles

  • Ryans Dad

Greetings from Amarillo, thankfully they are Ranger affiliates up here. Afraid I will be dark for the next few evenings though.

  • DC

Like yall said he will just keep swinging for the fences now

  • Evan Grant

@AJM: On Murphy, Ron Washington is trying hard to give Murphy vote of confidence against lefties. That’s why he keeps playing him.

  • Evan Grant

@Ryans Dad: We shall keep you posted like a beacon at sea. (That sounded awful the minute I typed it)

  • JoseCardenal

    OK…Now we have the:
    Homer Pool
    Padilla Bean Ball Pool
    Millwood Bare Hand Ball Pool

  • Ryans Dad

Pretty bad I agree EG, but I know what you mean and I appreciate it immensely.

  • Zhigh63

Murphy can do that against lefties too.

  • Juboon

Go Murph! Good call for Ron, I guess…

  • Evan Grant

@AJM: Back to you. … (just kidding)

  • Jeffrey

And now Murphy responds…starting this game off right

  • TD

Looks like the day off really helped.

    Whew.

  • wes

dang i had murph in the 5th..i need him to do that again

  • Evan Grant

@JoseCardenal: I hated you with a vengeance during the early 1970s as you always were the toughest out for my Braves in the Cubs’ lineup. But that said, I like your thinking. Next Millwood start, we will have a Meat Hook Pool (if someone reminds me) regarding who hits the first ball of Millwood’s mitt.

  • adam

Maybe all we needed was for Houston to come into town…

  • TD

Wow…longhorns came back from a 6-0 deficit against Matt Leake (16-1) , the number 8 overall pick. 6-6 in the 4th.

  • wes

who says the silver boot dosent mean anything to these guys?

  • The Beer Guy

Glad to see this offensive outburst. I was somewhat anxious, as Way-Rod has been pitching pretty well thus far.

    Let’s get some more runs!

  • TD

Yeah…go Kevin. He is heating up now.

  • TD

    EVAN: Millwood an all-star??

  • Jeffrey

what is millwood’s ERA now? Isn’t it something like 2.72?

  • Dylan

Ok… secondary homerun pool… I’m calling Salty will hit a homer this at bat.

  • Dylan

    Just kidding.

  • TD

    Here goes #3

  • Jeffrey

    good, patient AB for kinsler

  • TD

That is my favorite AB of the night for KINS.

  • wes

@evan: the rangers have elvis listed at 6′-0′ is that accurate? he looks deceiveingly (don’t know if thats a word or if its spelled right) taller than that.

  • The Beer Guy

I think you can make a good case for Millwood as an All-Star, especially if he can pick up a couple more wins and hold the ERA more or less where it is (or at least sub-3.00)

  • Reagan

Evan who has officially signed? I’ve got a personal count of nine but TR says 14 have put their names to ink. Can you tell me the missing five?

My count is Sierra, Tullis, Lane, DiFazio, Jamison, Campbell, Brown, Landry, Vail.

    Who am I missing?

  • Jeffrey

even better AB by m. young

  • The Beer Guy

@Jeffrey: His ERA is 2.61 right now

  • Reagan

Go Mike. You’ve got to love playing Houston to cure what ails this offense.

  • wes

really great to see this kind of production tonight

  • Dylan

Was it just me or did that seem like a cheap double? It looked like a single coming off the bat, and it’s not like they threw home.

  • Jeffrey

    @The Beer Guy thanks

  • TD

YOUNG and KINSLER HOT = Rangers rolling.

YOUNG and KINSLER COLD = Rangers sucking.

Just one game…lets hope this is a sign of their respective slumps being over.

  • The Beer Guy

Maybe I should play the Astros…I might get a raise, get a girlfriend, win a new car or something.

  • TD

    LOL

  • Dylan

God the Knoxy segments make me wanna end it all.

  • The Beer Guy

I don’t mind that by Pudge at all.

  • Ghost of Jeff Kunkel

Nice reception given to Pudge by the fans after his tater.

  • Bob Bland

I guess all the Rangers needed to wake up their bats was for the Astros to wave their Magic WANDY…ROCK ME!

  • Ghost of Jeff Kunkel

    BTW,

As bad as Knox is, I would GLADLY welcome him over the Astros crew I am listening to. Their Lithium-esque delivery makes me appreciate Josh and TAG.

  • DC

Knox has to give Bad radio drops

  • Dylan

@GoJK – The worst is those White Sox games you can catch on WGN occassionally. Terrible southern drawls and AWFUL homerism.

  • The Beer Guy

Yeah the Astros crew are pretty monotonous…But really you can’t get any worse than “Hawk” for the White Sox. That guy drives me bananas. Rex Hudler a close second there.

  • DC

    Feliz pitching good tonight

  • jb

i never get all the knox bashing… i think the way he handles the crowds shows a subtle humorous side.. i find it entertaining

  • Evan Grant

@Reagan: List of today’s signees is now on the blog. Sorry for not getting that up earlier.

  • TD

That was an UGLY swing by Crush Davis. UGH.

  • wes

i know its almost sacrilegious to say around here, but i have a hard time rooting for pudge with steroids hanging over him. i really liked him while he was here, but i have put him in the same pot as a-rod, gonzo, and raffy. just another juicer and we wont ever know what was real and what was the roids.

  • Evan Grant

@wes: Bad with heights, but I’d be OK with him listed at 6-1.

  • Bob Bland

Pudge’s body would never have held up to all these thousands of games behind the plate if he did roids. Call me naive, but I think he’s clean.

  • TD

@wes: good point…you know, one thing I wonder too, and never hear one PEEP about it is HANK BLALOCK. I mean…what happened to that guy?? He was a 2 time all-star….he had some injuries, but that doesn’t explain it ALL. Does anyone else think he was on the juice?

  • Ghost of Jeff Kunkel

    @wes – it’s a fair argument about Pudge.

I was 17 when he broke in, so he was one of the 1st sports stars I can remember that seemed my age. So for me, PEDs or not, he gets a pass. Suspension of Disbelief to preserve a younger man’s memory.

  • Reagan

No worries Evan I’m just being anal wanting to know right this second. I appreciate you posting the info and if you don’t know more than a few of us will eagerly accept any and all information you can pass along.

  • Evan Grant

@wes: Get your point on Pudge, but let me say this, when he was lean and mean and not much of a hitting machine, he was still the best defensive catcher in the game for a very long period of time. I wasn’t here when he broke in, but I’d say that if guys brought you warm and fuzzy memories when they were here, hold on to them.

  • Bob Bland

Blalock would make sense, but I’m more inclined to think he’s just injury prone.

  • wes

@TD he definately fits the profile, but never heard anything on him other than that.
@Bob Bland: i know the arguments against citing Canseco as a reliable source of information, but as far as i know he has been proven correct on all the players he named as juicers. and in his book he said he injected pudge on numerous occations

  • DC

Pudge looks the same today as he did at 19. I saw most his games his first year and he was great from day one.

  • The Beer Guy

Hmm, do you send Millwood back out there? He’s at 97 pitches, so the tendency would be to do so. But if you’ve got Jennings warming up, and the plan is to bring him in only at the start of innings…maybe give Millwood a bit of a rest?

  • Dylan

I’ll never forget being a kid and watching that first game that that Pudge played. He pinch hit late in the game and settled in behind the plate in the defensive half of the inning.

The pitcher (cant’ remember who now) allowed the leadoff batter to get to first. Understandably, the runner was gonna test 19 year old kid in his first Major League game’s arm, and Pudge threw what would be his signature bullet to second.

One of the few times my jaw has ever dropped watching a baseball game. Balls just didn’t travel that quickly from the catcher to 2nd.

  • Auditor

If anyone did not get the chance yesterday, here is an article with Bill James about how he supports Nolan Ryan and increased pitch counts… at least for “mature” pitchers.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/joe_posnanski/06/15/james.pitchcounts/index.html

  • Dylan

@DC – I disagree. He got much bigger, but he’s also played for a long time and the girth could be natural.

  • cameron

Favorite Pudge memory: One time at the Ballpark, he was chasing down a foul ball that was in about the 1st row of the stands. After catching the ball, he helped himself to a fan’s nacho sitting right next to where he caught the ball. It was a great show of him connecting with a fan right in the middle of the game. Pudge had a great big smile while he was doing it.

  • Fred

Lawyers, especially divorce lawyers, tend to try to make thieir case, no matter what the facts are.
Murphy was .259/.292/.379/.671 (since the counsellor is a stat guy, (vs. a baseball player).
As I said the other night (before the HR) not an all star, but better than a platoon player. Time to look at the numbers and not the in-going bias.

  • Dylan

IF you had the 7th inning for the Meat Hook pool, you’re the winner.

  • TD

My favorite Pudge memory is his 9 RBI game vs the Mariners, in Seattle. LOVED watching PUDGE play, and if he juiced, I forgive him.

  • Dylan

I know it’s not his rookie year, but here’s Pudge at 18.

    http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/sports_sportsstuff/images/2008/07/30/irod1989.jpg

  • LC

I really like it how kinsler keeps it real with his socks. That’s old school.

  • Fred

Looking better…but, as PacMan would say..dude, it’s the Astros”.

  • DC

From what Tom has said tonight Pudge came in working year round from day one.

  • Dylan

@DC – I agree, and he definitely could have transformed himself from that picture above to who we saw in the 90′s and who we see today naturally, but you can’t rule the juice out (especially when you consider that the 90′s Rangers were ground zero for it).

I’m not hatin’ on Pudge, just saying it’s just impossible to rule it out.

  • DC

True he could have given what went on here. Still think he would have put up the numbers he has no matter what.

  • Fred

Murphy 2nd HR. 1st was against Baltimore. 1st hit of the year, if I remember correctly.
Lord, between you and AJM, he gets no respect!

  • JoseCardenal

@Evan – its ok, I used to torture Cub fans (even 7 year old kids ) by stranding runners all the time… :-)

@ the board – Pudge looks like he could run a marathon now compared to his beefed up days. For me its just la la la la la I can’t hear you. Loved him too much while he was here!

  • Fred

@Evan–got it. Off a lefty. Slow on the uptake. Point still out there.

  • Evan Grant

    @Fred: No worries.

@LC: How are things up in The Hills?

@The Pudge Debaters: I do think Pudge’s body changed in the late 1990s and I think he’s slimmed down considerably in the last couple of years. I’m not about to connect that with anything, just an observation about body type.

  • DC

Feliz didn’t finish as good as he started
    ip h er bb so
    6.1 8 4 0 3
    shutout for first 5

  • Fred

Kins looks like a different (more mature) hitter, tonight.

  • wes

@evan: i’ve read on some blogs and i think even an article or two mentioning brad hawpe as a possibility of a trade to the Rangers. are these just speculations because the rockies, up untill recently, are not having a good year? or has colorado been shopping or at least left open the possibility of listening to a trade?

  • Last of the Romohicans

This is a couple times in the last few years they’ve had the 4-day ASB. There should be a full slate of games that Thursday, period.

There’s so few off days in the season, it’s really detrimental to the team to have one taken away by making it come after the All-Star Break.

Another way: That’s another day in the Texas August/September that the team will have to play instead of rest.

  • TD

THE SILVER BOOT IS OURS!!! BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. (EVIL LAUGH)

    Great game!

  • Dylan

Nice win. Can’t ask for much easier than that.

  • Jack Daddy

    wes,

that was me re/ hawpe on several occasions. That was before they ripped off a double digit lead. However, a week ago their gm did indicate everything was up for discussion. I think he would be a great fit (not a rental) and would love to include Huston Street. However, this is DEFINITELY STEP 5, and would cost more than I would probably want to give. I would imagine something along the lines of Main, Davis (they would ask for smoak and feliz), Kiker and one more hitter. A lot huh?

Have heard no response from anyone on it. Either way, with Rockies playing better, any trade with them is on hold I would think.
