7:13: Wow, Presidential traffic put us way behind at The Depot. We will try to catch you up as quickly as possible. But let’s just say the Presidential Suite gathering was very nice and very hot and if you see anybody wandering around town in a red Rangers jersey with the No. 43 and “Bush” on the back, you’ll know who it is.

7:18: Taylor Teagarden allows passed ball to advance runners to second and third. First passed ball he’s allowed this year and only second by Rangers catchers.

7:19: It took Frank Francisco just nine pitches to get through his inning of work for Double-A Frisco against Corpus Christi. Nine pitches, seven strikes.

7:27: Michael Young homers, making him 11-for-14 in his career and making “Jonathan” a home run pool winner. Had the situation (1st inning, nobody on and a 2-1 count) exactly right. Missed the distance by 19 feet. Jonathan called it 401; Young’s homer went 382 feet.

7:32: Eddie Guardado blames his recent struggles on trouble with his splitter and just plain bad decision-making.

7:38: Revisited the ninth-inning decision-making process with Ron Washington before the game. Think what it comes down to is this: He doesn’t he really have much confidence in the bottom third of his lineup right now. When Marlon Byrd led off with a double, I don’t think he necessarily saw the same scoring opportunity that others did. To try and score by playing small ball would likely have meant having to take out both Chris Davis and Jarrod Saltalamacchia and replace them with lesser defensive players. Think he was content to play along to the 10th when he had the more reliable top portion of the lineup coming up.

Not saying I agree with the thinking, but that seemed to be where he was going with his explanation.

“I’m a defensive man,” Washington said. “I’m always going to try and keep my best defense on the field.”

7:46: 1B Chris Davis homered in the bottom of the second. It was the Rangers’ 12th consecutive solo homer. They haven’t hit a multi-run homer since 2B Ian Kinsler hit a three-run shot at Boston on June 5. It’s the longest streak of solo home runs for the club since Sept. 6-13, 1986.

8:06: And now the Dustin Nippert rehab report. Nippert followed Frank Francisco into the game against Corpus Christi. Nippert’s line: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K…25 pitches/15 for strikes. … The Rangers are planning on building Nippert up as a starter so they would have the option of either using him as a long reliever or a starter in the majors.

8:08: FYI, the Rangers PR department informs us that the last 12 homers all being consecutive homers ties the club record of 12. The streak of 12 was previously done in 1986. I don’t think we are going to find out who holds the major league record for this.

8:12: My hometown newspaper, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, asked me to catch Braves fans up on the rejuvenation of Andruw Jones. Admittedly, Jones has hit a bit of a slump lately, but nevertheless he’s picked up the pieces of his career and has carved out a niche with the Rangers. Here’s the story, in all its glory.

8:27: Elvis Andrus walks for the second consecutive time after failing earlier in the at-bat at bunting for a hit. Brings up the second part of the conversation with Washington today. It was about bunting. The Rangers have very few players who are competent at it. Washington’s thought: Start putting more emphasis on the art in the minor leagues. I agree. I don’t think any player – whether he’s Justin Smoak or David Paisano – should be promoted from one level to the next until he’s shown he can get a bunt down a certain number of times. A half-dozen plate appearances a year in the minors is certainly a tradeoff for one or two wins in the majors over the course of a season.

Chris Davis has no professional sacrifice bunts. David Murphy has three. Hank Blalock has three. Jarrod Saltalamacchia has two.

“I’m not going to ask guys to do something up here that they can’t or have never done,” Washington said. “It’s something that’s got to be done down [in the minors]. If you are ever going to make it to the end of the year up here in the playoff race, long ball is not going to win. You’ve got to be able to get a bunt down when you need to.”

8:52: Well, it will go down as another quality start for Vicente Padilla. Not a dominant outing by any stretch, but to last six in this heat and with less-than-stellar stuff is an accomplishment. The Rangers have gotten three consecutive outings like this from Padilla.

9:12: By the way, since we’ve been talking bunting so much lately, let me say I was not a fan of Cecil Cooper’s bunt with No. 2 hitter Jeff Keppinger in the top half of the inning. It’s one thing to bunt in the first in order to take an early lead with your ace on the mound. It’s something else entirely to play for one run in the seventh with the bullpens involved in an AL-rules game in a stadium known for offense.

9:36: Maybe it’s just knee-jerk opinion, but I think two things: First, four hits off Brandon Backe and Wes Wright in seven innings is not what I’d call a robust performance; Second, is this not a kind of boring game?

10:05: Chris Davis must shorten up swing, particularly with two strikes. He’s now at 97 strikeouts and could very well pass 100 before Summer officially starts this weekend.

I was gettin worried Evan. :) thought you might crash the tv booth again.

  • TD

I see the Padilla SQUEEZE is in effect tonight.

  • TD

oh yeah….and glad you could make it Evan.

  • scooper

MLB Gameday showed all 8 of the pitches to Keppinger as strikes.

  • scooper

@evan: as TAG pointed out, that was a touch passed ball. TT was set up outside and the pitch was way inside.

  • Dylan

@Evan! Cookies in the Press Box!!!!!!

  • scooper

    “tough”; sorry about the misspelling.

  • Dylan

That’s a win for someone in the pool. Saw a lot of Youngs in the 1st in that thread.

  • wes

2 nights in a row hr pool winner?

  • TD

is there any free stuff left???

  • The Beer Guy

    @Evan (7:13): Josh Brolin?

  • scooper

Johnathan – he even got the count right.

  • wes

wow, rangers are 2nd in AL for double plays this year..impressive

  • Jack Daddy

    Evan,

2 baseball 101 questions for you:

    1. Read somewhere that Rangers were having Beavan throw more 4 seamers to buid up his velocity. I understand that 4 seamers are thrown about 2-3 mph faster b/c held with looser grip (less friction). But how does throwing “build up” arm strength/velocity? Was that just a mistake in the article I saw or am I missing something?

    2. Re/ Young and his crazy #s on Backe (and other similar situations of player on player dominance over several years): do you attribute that to a pure vision thing, ie. picking the ball up earlier/easier? I wouldn’t think its a situation of knowing how they are being worked (there is no real magic there), nor a mechanical thing (over that many plate appearances). It would seem to me that it has to be a case of Young just sees the ball really, really well out of his hand. Thoughts?

  • Johnathan

Woot! I’ve got to give the assist to Evan there! :)

  • scooper

    Way to go, Crush!

  • Dylan

Really glad to see that from Davis. Rather see him work some singles and doubles into the mix, but anythign to maybe give him some confidence is good for me.

  • TD

    CRUSH makes a cameo!

  • Jack Daddy

Wash is an idiot for not pinch hitting for Chris there. Jeez, its a 1 run game.

  • wes

can there be multiple winners in the hr pool?

  • The Beer Guy

Woohoo! I had Davis in the HR pool, can I have half your free stuff Jonathan? :D

  • scooper

@wes: count and distance are the tie-breakers.

  • scooper

    @jackdaddy: lol

  • The Beer Guy

@Jack Daddy: Of course! And you know what else? Did you hear that the bat boy hit his head on the top of the dugout? I think Wash is to blame for that, too, since he asked the bat boy to bring him a drink. I’m still trying to find a way to blame Wash on the back ache I had today…

  • Dylan

I heard Wash doesn’t support the resistance in Iran.

  • Jack Daddy

just read this in ESPN the Mag:

“Even though Rangers reliever CJ Wilson has the velocity to be a premium closer, the lefty has a tendency to shy away from his heater. “He doesn’t just want to strike you out-he also wants to embarrass you”. says one scout. “Se he’ll try to make you look bad on a 0-2 breaking ball when he’s just thrown two fastballs right by you. It’s not necessary”"

-I also raise an eyebrow when I read this stuff – you think a scout is really talking to ESPN Mag about things like this? That being said, sounds like CJ. Knucklehead!

  • Dylan

Man, I just never get tired of Elvis. No knock on MY, but SUCH an improvement.

  • scooper

45 pitches thru 3 innings – Padilla has rebounded nicely from that 1st inning.

  • David

    @ Evan

The Rangers last 12 home runs have all been solo shots … what is the MLB record?

  • The Beer Guy

    @Dylan: Global warming? Wash.

  • The Beer Guy

@scooper: Nice to see him handle adversity well. Good game so far for Padilla!

  • wes

    @scooper: thanks

  • TD

    Mortgage crisis: WASH

  • Evan Grant

@Jack Daddy: I’ve heard the same thing about Wilson from scouts, so I have no doubt that has been their take. But I think the best scouts also watch and learn. C.J. is spending a lot less time trying to strike guys out this year and more time getting ground balls. It’s been a big part of his recent success.

@David: Checking on the consecutive solo homer record, but it will take some time.

  • Dylan

@The Beer Guy – Also, He forgets his mother’s birthday on a regular basis.

  • David

    @Evan

Thanks … I’ve been searching since yesterday and couldn’t find anything … figured you could give John Blake or one of his minions something to do

  • The Beer Guy

Re: CJ, he has definitely been more successful lately, but he still has a habit of putting 1 on base. I think his WHIP is around 1.40 or so. Wish that were lower, for late-innings guy…

  • The Beer Guy

(for A late-innings guy, that should read)

  • Evan Grant

@Jack Daddy: In regards to Beavan, the “rising” four-seam fastball has always been considered the pitch thrown with more velocity. Obviously, it’s a physics question and I slept through physics. I was much more into Earth Science.

As far as Young’s numbers vs. Backe or any other crazy matchup, such as Ian Kinsler vs. Wandy Rodriguez, I’d attribute it to a combination of things. Repertoire plays a part. The guys delivery and how early or well a hitter can recognize the pitch plays a part. And once a hitter has a good game against a particular pitcher, I believe he gets more confident.

  • AJM

Taylor Teagarden is a lesser defensive player than Jarrod Saltalamacchia?

  • The Beer Guy

@Evan: There has been some talk here and there about 1B Nick Johnson of the Nats. I know you expressed a bit of skepticism about that, but I think it’s not an entirely bad idea, only if Davis’ struggles continue.

ESPN’s Jayson Stark writes this today: “He’s still an on-base machine (.415 OBP, eighth in the NL). He hits left-handers (.333 average, .536 slugging percentage). And he’s played in 20 postseason games, back in his Yankees incarnation.”

  • David

    @AJM
sure looks like it lately … something you’d get laughed at for saying last season

  • TD

Now that is some ugly defense!

  • wes

@Evan: what is the general make-up of the official scorers ie. are they in any way associated with umpires or the umpires association, just baseball knowledgeable people, or something else?

  • Greg

Man, I had Kinsler in the 1st yesterday and Young in the 1st today in the pool and lost both times :(

  • Jack Daddy

@The Beer Guy – I’m with you! Been begging for that for a few weeks. My sense is that we would have to move Blalock’s salary though (they make the same). I also wouldn’t give up much (I would give up what we got for Laird, not much more – if that doesn’t get it done, I would have to reconsider).

Evan doesn’t like it because he’s a DeRosa guy :)

  • DC

This ump misses more than he gets right.

  • James

Love to see Elvis take charge on that foul pop and call MY off.

Why does it seem that only a certain “type” of player is fully capable of bunting in the majors? Regardless of your star level, or skill profile, you should be able to bunt at this level. You never know when a good bunt will win a game for you. IMO, CD should be fully capable of putting that bunt down in the 9th last night. Although the reality is that he probably is not.

  • Evan Grant

@AJM: David makes a good point.

  • Rangerette

“the velocity to be a premium closer” is awesome.

  • Jolly

nick johnson wouldn’t be a bad deal……when you want a defense day then davis plays and nick can dh on those days…..

  • The Beer Guy

@Jack Daddy: DeRosa’s multi-position ability has value, for sure. And yeah, we’d have to move Blalock I suspect, but hopefully could parlay that into some pitching. But Johnson’s a FA after this year, too. Do you consider retaining him? A lot depends on what Davis would do in a AAA “rehab” stint I suppose.

  • Evan Grant

@Jack Daddy, The Beer Guy: I have two issues with Nick Johnson. First is his health. He never seems to make it through a full year. Second is the fact he hits left-handed. If the Rangers need anything desperately, it’s another right-handed bat. That’s why I favor DeRosa. Plus you know DeRosa is a clubhouse asset, is more versatile and is cheaper.

  • David

at this point you’d have to hope someone claimed Blalock on waivers

  • James

I don’t see Johnson hitting left as being an issue, he’s hitting .333 against lefties.

  • The Beer Guy

DeRosa has been on a tear lately. But are you sure he’s cheaper? Aren’t they both making about $5 million this year? Johnson would be a free agent, what about DeRosa?

Also, noted this from the same Stark article:

“You can add Texas to the list of teams interested in Nick Johnson, or some kind of left-handed bat who could play, or platoon at, first base. “They’ve got to send Chris Davis back [to the minors],” said one scout. “This kid has lost all feel for the strike zone. They can’t let him keep going on a 250-strikeout pace. You can get him out anywhere in the strike zone right now.”

  • wes

    cruz has a canon…

  • James

Thanks for that last post (8:27), Evan. We are in agreement.

  • The Beer Guy

Wash was angry, don’t blame him. Salty where are you?

  • Phil

Ah yes, the Padilla meltdown inning.

  • TD

    GIVE ME DeROSA ANYDAY.

  • Fred

Teagarden is having a rough night. 1st time I’ve seen it in the field, aside from tossing one into CF last week. 2 PB”s, and what I thought was a pretty weak effort on the play at home for the 2nd run. Sure would have taken a dive at the guy, rather than the wave.
Then there’s Padilla: if he had covered 1st, he’s be out of it by now. Takes himself out mentally.

  • Dylan

@Phil – Really a “new Padilla” inning to me. Got in trouble, got rattled, gave up the lead, but didn’t give away the ball game. Not ideal, but last year would have been a whole lot worse.

  • scooper

    @dylan: good point!

  • Fred

    Dylan-and didn’t cover 1B.
    It’s who he is.

  • Jack Daddy

both Johnson and DeRosa are free agents to be.

Evan – I would completely agree with you if this was January. Johnson CANT stay healthy. But there is only 3 months to go and by all accounts he is as healthy as ever now. I just think DeRosa would cost a TON more in prospects. Based on that, I say Nick. Would think the Nats would give him away to escape his salary.

I also actually PREFER him because he is a lefty. You are thinking we need a righty because we have Blalock and Davis here. I assume if we brought in Johnson that we would move Blalock and send Davis down. Bingo, need Lefty.

No, I wouldn’t consider resigning Johnson or derosa after the season. you still have DAvis and smoak and they are the future. This would PURELY be a rental move, which is why they both are attractive.

  • JustSaying

no padilla did his job 5 innings 3 runs…..and jennings did his

  • Dylan

@Fred – Not saying it was a great outing (or inning) by Padilla, just saying it wasn’t a meltdown.

  • The Beer Guy

Totally agree on the bunting comments re: starting in minors. We’ve been a slugging power team for so long, it’s as though bunting has been totally sidelined. That needs to change.

  • scooper

    @justsaying: padilla went 6 innings

  • Auditor

Kinda strange seeing Texas 6th in all of MLB in stolen bases….

  • scooper

@beerguy: I agree that bunting should start in the minors, but it is a copout to say that he’s not going to ask these guys to bunt because they never had to in the minors. You can practice bunting in the big leagues, too. I do understand what he is saying, but he is also saying that Davis, Blalock, Jones, Salty, TT, Hamilton, etc. will NEVER bunt. I sure wouldn’t want my opponent to know that I was never going to ask these guys to bunt. And, if you are hitting below, say, .250, you should expect to be asked to lay down a sacrifice bunt rather than be allowed to swing for the fences. Wash says he likes smallball, but now he is saying he won’t play it unless there are a very few particular players at the plate.

  • scooper

Re: bunting in the minors – did this thought just occur to Wash? If he had implemented a plan for everyone to learn to bunt in the minors a couple of years ago, then Davis could have got a bunt down.

  • The Beer Guy

@scooper: Good points, it can certainly be practiced in the bigs. These guys aren’t beyond improving on it.

  • Fred

    Scoop- Not Wash’s job.

  • scooper

@fred: but he has no input?

  • JustSaying

@scooper my bad…….felt like five….he really struggled and fought and scraped…..really smellled like a meltdown but he walked out alive and tied…….

  • The Beer Guy

This offense, despite Tuesday’s outburst, still has issues…very frustrating.

  • scooper

@fred: I guess what bothers me is that he is using that as an excuse for not bunting. They didn’t learn to bunt in the minors, so I can’t have them bunt now. Do you think, for example, that the Angels’ manager would ever say that? And I actually like Wash and think he does a good job. This just seems like a copout to me.

  • JustSaying

this team has schizophenic batting tendencies……only a couple led by young and andrus can respond to a situational hitting spot……the others are lost in the power hitting locked down mode and unable or unwilling broaden their approach…..

  • JustSaying

    and murphy……

  • scooper

@justsaying: you are right, so, does that mean we just give up? Our players aren’t good at situational hitting, so we just won’t do it! If we can’t manufacture runs, we’re not going anywhere.

  • DC

But the Rangers have the greatest hitting coach in baseball.

  • Phil

So, am I the only one that feels Jennings is nothing but a spare part?

We already know he’s not good with inherited runners, but I have ZERO confidence if he’s pitching under any circumstances.

  • Kyle

“But the Rangers have the greatest hitting coach in baseball”

When is it okay to talk about what a bad job Rudy has done this year?? I’ll start…We’ve got 3 guys consistently hitting this year–one (Cruz) had to go to the minors before he could get his swing straightened out, another (Anrus)is too new to be influenced and the other (Young) has refound his original opposite field stroke that he had when he broke in with Toronto..

But Rudy will be around forever–he’s nice to Grandapa Urine and he’ll continue to champion him

    Rudy=FRAUD

  • Ryans Dad

who allowed the 2 runs in the 8th?

  • Brandon

Nice outing by Grilli (at least through the ninth). He could wind up being a great pick up. He started the year as the Rockies set-up man and was an integral part of the 2005 Tigers bullpen.

  • The Beer Guy

    @Ryans Dad: Jennings

  • scooper

    @RyansDad: Jennings.

  • Clinton V.

    Chris Davis is pretty bad.

  • Juan Gonzalez

    Dear Mr Davis,

PLEASE STOP SWINGING at pitches in the dirt.

Everyone knows they’re coming, why don’t you?

    You make me look selective.

  • Clinton V.

Good job continuing to hand the division away guys.

  • DC

Why is Boggs on the team if your not gonna use him?

  • Kyle

Someone’s going to have to grow a testicle in this organization and send Davis down..that was just sad

  • The Beer Guy

Davis swinging at balls 90 feet out of the strike zone, and Jones sitting there taking strike after strike.

Thank God I am going out for beers tomorrow and not watching the game. I’m frustrated with these guys right now. Ugh!

  • Fred

I understand you, Scoop, but my point is that minor league training isn’t Wash’s job. That comes down from the top.
    On other things–
    2) Elvis needs to learn a thing or 2 on base running–even with his speed.
    3) Clinton–I guess you missed the HR that supplied 33% of their runs (and the stretch that made the DP.
    4) What the hell was Byrd doing running in the 9th? Idiocy! He couldn’t have done it on his own. Was it called?

  • Kyle

Davis has been great defensively and he’s a good kid..and yes, everyone saw the solo shot…but we’re almost 3 months into the season and he’s hitting 200 with an OBP not far from that…you just cannot have that from a first basement on a championship team all yr long—you just can’t…..by keeping him up you are just allowing the kid to demolish one of the most embarassing records in pro sports….and no, sadly his current hitting coach offers no salvation for him

  • scooper

All good points, Fred. I totally agree on Elvis. And I don’t know what Byrd was doing. He wasn’t even the tying run. There is no way that was worth the risk.

  • JustSaying

@scooper no we’re not giving up or pinch hitting for young….oops…be nice…….
@phil it goes in that repeated rangers approach to the bullpen…….we just haven’t invested there so we push all to their level of failure or exhaustion……

  • Fred

    Kyle–
Point is: Rangers are in no way a championship team, this year. they would have to be very lucky to be a playoff team, this year.
The stated objective was to develop the team for a 2010 run. You do that by developing players–not by jerking them up and down.
You see the good (like the Davis HR tonight and his fielding, all year) and you see the bad–and work on it. Davis was a hero last year. the league has caught up with him. You help him to adjust. Look at Sierra, Sosa and Gonzalez when they were kids…and none of them saved runs like Davis.

  • C.J.

@Fred: You’re right, we are in no way a championship team, and that’s because we keep putting Davis in the lineup. I don’t give a damn how good of a defensive first baseman he is, that produces absolutely zero runs. His offensive numbers are embarrassing, and anyone in their right mind would send Davis down to get his sh*t together. In these close games, his guaranteed 2-4 strikeouts a night could very-well be costing us games. And please, stop citing his home runs. He hit one last night and we still lost.

  • Ruffian

All – Let’s not get too carried away. Fred is correct – this thing is a work in progress, not a championship contender. Whether Davis stays up or goes down will not impact the outcome of this season. The Rangers have been alone in first place for 40-some odd days now because of a significant confluence of events, not the least of which is the pitching injuries to the Angels. There are many flaws and problems on this team right now, but anybody that thinks that this team could “go all the way” is drinking WAY too much Kool-Aid. Let’s enjoy the progress they’re making this year with the young guys (including Davis) and get ready for a significant run of a better brand of baseball in the next several years than we’ve seen here in a LONG, LONG time.
