Dad’s Day Depot: Rangers-Giants Game Blog, News And Notes

Here we go. … Most of my commentary will be in the comments section again. That is if I don’t take a little tiny nap at some point.

3:24: One reason Marlon Byrd is getting a day off today, besides his general struggle is perhaps to get him back on track on in terms of hitting philosophy because he’s gotten away from what made him so dangerous in his first two seasons with the Rangers. In those two seasons, Byrd swung at the first pitch 35.2 percent of the time. This year, it’s jumped a full 10 percent. It’s a big part of why Byrd’s batting average is down 20 points from the last two years and why his OBP is down 59 points.

I think Byrd and Hank Blalock, two free agents to be, have spent more time trying to slug this season than doing the things that will get them the best possible job security as they go forward.

4:35: With Elvis Andrus at plate, Josh Lewin remarks that Rangers are hitless in last 33 at-bats, which by the way is the equivalent of 11 innings. Then Barry Zito retires Andrus to make it 34 at-bats and six innings of no-hit ball in this game. Did anybody ask for a no-hitter for Father’s Day?

4:46: No hitter alert over as Andruw Jones hits a two-run homer after Michael Young walks to lead off the seventh. Also ends the Rangers’ streak of 14 consecutive solo homers. And so now we go from discussing possible no-hitter to discussing whether Rangers can get out of here with a win.

4:57: Before anybody goes all ballistic on Nelson Cruz’s defense, let me say this: I think just about every problem he’s had this year has been sun-related. I think something can be done about that. I don’t think he’s had much problem in night games.

5:35: Well, now first place is up for grabs after Rangers lose 3-2 at San Francisco. Angels can take first with a win over Dodgers tonight. Not sure what the next move is for this club. Not sure they have a bunch of them to make. If they are going to stay the course, thye are going to have to let guys work through their offensive problems.

    Let’s go Rangers….

Get a win today, watch the Angels lose tonight and get things back on the right side.

  • scooper

Check out Elvis’ eye black. He’s getting exotic.

  • scooper

2 walks – nice way to start the game. Double Steal? there’s a lefty on the mound.

  • TD

    7 years, 126 million for Zito….

  • Rangers Fan

I wonder what Jones avg is since April

  • Evan Grant

Hitless in three straight at-bats with runners in scoring position in the first inning. Rangers are hitless in their last nine.

  • TD

The good news is we are all but guaranteed a solo homerun at some point today!

  • Evan Grant

@Rangers Fan: Counting the first inning strikeout, it’s now .207 since May 1, .210 since April 21 (the last two months).

  • walrus

Evan, as pitchers adjust to individual hitters, can teams adjust to batting coaches and their approach? I have the greatest respect for Jaramillo, and his work speaks for itself.

But I read in a post on another site where they discussed how pitchers are struggling but when they face the Rangers they are sharp then the next start they struggle again. Dontrelle Willis for example, who is now back on the DL due to nerves. Could it be the league has gamed Jaramilla’s approach to hitting and that is the reason for a whole team to be struggling at the same time?

  • Michael in LH

That was a great inning by Millwood. He looks to be on today.

  • Rangers Fan

So why exactly do people want him playing over Davis? He’s hardly hitting better and definitely not as good in the field.

  • Fred

    @Rangers Fan-Good question

  • Evan Grant

Posted a little note about Marlon Byrd in the blog proper.

  • TD

Love Tom Grieve but this is the part where he starts talking about HOW GREAT our OUTS ARE!!!

    WOO HOO!! That’s AWESOME!

  • Red

Because Chris Davis is a strike-out waiting to happen.

  • Evan Grant

@Walrus: It still comes down to the players executing. Jaramillo is an excellent tactician, but his weakness as a hitting instructor is still philosophy and approach. Nobody can help players understand their swing better than Jaramillo. But it appears most of the hitters – particularly the young hitters and the free-agents-to-be – have struggled to grasp pitch sequences and scenarios.

  • Red

Wow, Davis actually put 1 in play

  • Evan Grant

@Rangers fan: Jones is still hitting 50 points higher than Davis for the year and his on-base percentage is more than 100 points higher. Jones has a longer track record of success and still seems more of a threat than Davis in the lineup. But I’ll turn your argument on its head. I’d suggest the reason Jones ISN’T playing regularly is because Davis is so good defensively.

  • scooper

@evan: the way you did the byrd post was good; it is still separate, but you let us know that it was us there. and I still like your comments in the commenst section.

  • TD

Well….what about if we make an organizational decision and decide we will not resign Byrd if he continues what Evan spoke of in the blog…is Boggs a part of the future? If we can ride with Davis then why not give Boggs the full time job in the OF (until Hamilton comes back).

I am a Byrd fan, but I think the Rangers are in the strange postition of Contending and Rebuilding…Boggs will not be swinging for a new contract, he will be doing whatever he can to stay on the field. I hope Marlon gets it together because he seems like a great guy and can play great defense.

  • Rangers Fan

@evan true enough…but do we really expect him to be here next year? I don’t so I don’t see the productivity in playing him.

  • Fred

@Evan-Yes,Jones has a long track record. But he’s not the player he was. Fun with stats: Compare the 2008-2009 numbers for Jones vs. Davis.Figgers lie and liars figger. Of course, Davis may never again be what he was in 2008, Just like Jones career numbers are meaningless, at this point.

  • Dylan

I’m not really a fan of Josh Lewin’s new decision to start calling Millwood “Milly”

  • Red

@Evan – Are the Rangers giving any thought to bringing up Borbon? Seems to be the type of hitter this lineup could use.

  • TD

@ Rangers Fan: I am with you, Jones won’t be here, but maybe he can heat up again and give us a better chance to win?? *unlikely* but maybe….

  • scooper

@Dylan: the players call him “Milly”

  • TD

Eli Whiteside HAS to be a fake name.

  • Evan Grant

@Red: Borbon has certainly improved his on base percentage, but I wouldn’t say he’s exactly the type of hitter this lineup needs. This lineup needs disciplined hitters and while Borbon is more disciplined than he once was, I don’t think I’d yet call him a disciplined hitter.

  • Dylan

@scooper: I’m sure they do. Just the first time I’ve heard Josh use it. Kinda urking me.

Then again, “Nellie” urked me for a while too but finally grew on me.

When I say this, keep in mind that I’m trying to bash Josh at all, cause I honestly really like him, but there are times when he adds just a bit to much “familiarity” for my taste.

  • Dylan

Tough inning, but love the way “Milly” battled through.

  • scooper

at some point this year (maybe sept., maybe earlier) borbon and smoak need to get their feet wet in the big leagues. they will both be here next year and they need to get a taste before then.

  • Rangers Fan

As much as I see the trying to win now…I don’t want to set us back if we don’t win this year..if that makes sense? I think we all know truly contending for it all is not happening this year. We are making great progress this year. Contending and getting that kind of experience is an added bonus. But not letting players work through slumps, learning how to make adjustments, etc will only set us back.

  • Red

Well when I meant kind of hitter this lineup could use, I meant a non homerun hitter. Plus he could make Josh move to left or right when he comes off the DL.

  • Dylan

@Evan – Been to a number of Frisco games this season and it seems like, with the exception of Smoak and now Beavans, the AA team isn’t quite as prospect heavy as this time last year. Is it just a matter of the top notch prospects being a year closer (OKC) or really young (Bakersfield)?

  • Rangers Fan

Can someone please explain the “baby got back comment”? That’s 2 way off comments by Josh this week….

  • Dylan

@Rangers Fan – Must have missed it. What did he say?

  • The Beer Guy

Talking about nicknames, I wish they came up with names for players like in the old days. Names that were unique and funny, not just shortening someone’s first or last name. That is so common in baseball and hockey too, it’s lazy. Nellie, Milly, Salty, Hammy, etc. “Crush” for Chris Davis, although inaccurate lately, is at least creative!

  • TD

    a few bad sequences there….

  • Rangers Fan

Cruz is struggling…at the plate and in the field. Just too many things not happening right now.

  • Red

This ballpark is horrible. Too easy to get a triple.

  • Fred

I really think Cruz is over rated as an OF. He has a lot of trouble with his jump and his angles.

  • alan

Here is what I dont get if the Cowboys can get rid of a cordinator then why cant the reangers do the same with Rudy. I mean I know he is considered great and all but if he cant teach someone like Chris Davis and Salty to stop swinging so freely and be more patient at the plate then this team will always be what it is no discipline.

  • scooper

@beerguy: but even “crush” came about by copying “crash” davis in Bull Durham. still lazy.

  • Rangers Fan

@Dylan he was talking about how San Fran inspired Tony Bennett to write “Baby Got Back” and then he goes “oh my notes were wrong, it was I left my hear in San Francisco”…very strange

  • scooper

@alan: Rudy is only bad in the eyes of some Rangers’ fans. They are not going to get rid of him. He would be snapped up by someone else in less than 30 seconds (and the Rangers would be a laughinstock around the league).

  • Tippett's 'stache

@Fred I’ll agree with you on that, it just doesn’t burn him as often in the Ballpark, probably would if he played LF or CF.

  • Dylan

@Rangers Fan – Probably just trying to be funny saying that Tony Bennet sang “Baby Got Back.”

  • Rangers Fan

Could Nellie be considered for DH next season? If you move Hamilton to right, Borbon in center, Murphy/a righthander and Nelly DH? Blalock and Jones most likely won’t be here.

  • The Beer Guy

@scooper: True, but it requires a bit more thought than just generically lopping off the last few letters of a name and adding “ie” or “y”

There just aren’t many “original” names left…The Big Unit, Pudge are two that come to mind. Heck, even just a nickname based on something obvious (The ‘Stache) would be good. Whitey Ford was called thusly because of his extremely blond hair…

  • Dylan

millwood should have caught that ball. That was a decent relay. Don’t think they’d have gotten the runner, but should have been caught.

  • TD

    Bad inning for the ROOKIE.

  • Dylan

    Nice catch, Andruw!

  • TD

@Dylan: maybe, but should not make that throw EVER. He would have been safe anyways. That’s on Elvis.

  • scooper

@beerguy: I agree with you. But no one even really calls him “Crush”. He is pretty much just CD, now.

  • Rangers Fan

I think the team actually calls Davis… Chip or chippy or something like that.

  • Red

@alan – Remember the Espn game against the white sox? Steve Phillips said Rudy is considered by everyone in the majors as the best in Baseball. Line would form to the left to get him.

  • The Beer Guy

I’m sure these guys have funny names for each other. Maybe the media should do more to get them out there.

  • TD

@JOSH LEWIN: We are beyond COLD, we are more like ARTIC!!!

  • James

At some point, Rudy HAS to begin to feel some heat for this craptacular performance we are seeing at the plate. Josh is still trying to pass it off as a “slump” but this is beyond ridiculous.

  • Dylan

@TD – I dunno. I can see where you are coming from, but if you can get the throw there in time, the inning is over and you give up no runs. Worth the try.

  • Fred

“Lettuce” for Kinsler is a good one (his hair)

  • scooper

@beerguy: that’s kind of the point – even the players call each other regular stuff.
    Millwood: Milly
    Cruz: Nellie
    Harrison: Harry
    Davis: CD
    McCarthy: B-Mac
Even the players aren’t very creative.

  • Tippett's 'stache

This team couldn’t hit water if they fell out of an effing boat.

(Figured it was appropriate with all the talk of Chris Davis’ nickname.)

  • DC

Best in baseball or not the aggressive aproach or not listening to Rudy is really killing this team.

  • James

I always refer to Kinsler as Lettuce.

  • The Beer Guy

I think in general fans give way too much credit to the impact of a coach and manager. When players do well, the praise is for them, but when they struggle oddly blame is given to the coaches and managers. As always, I say blame the player first for any failure. Sure the coach plays a part in that, but the players have to actualize what the coach says.

  • Rangers Fan

He is also used to making those throws and Davis who is more able to make the acrobatic catch/save.

  • alan

Rudy gets a pass for everything let me get this straight if the Rangers pitching goes bad the coach has to go but if the bats dont then it is because rudy has a great reputation for helping guys. I guess thats why we will always be 2nd because are hitting approach will never change

  • The Beer Guy

Sorry Alan, I think I will take the opinion of an overwhelming number of players, GMs, and analysts across MLB over yours. No offense.

  • scooper

@fred: you are right. “lettuce” is good
@beerguy: I agree. Rudy can’t go out there and do it for them. Rudy has a track record of helping mediocre hitters become good to very good hitters, but he just gives them the tools to do the job. The players have to go out there and do it.

  • walrus

If I were a manager and were about to face Texas I would be tempted to rearrange my rotation to allow my struggling pitchers to face Texas to build up their confidence. Poor Millwood, he’s only given up 2 runs but with these guys it must look like it is already out of reach.

  • DC

I’d like to see this teams OBP for the last 15 years and where it ranks league wide……betting it’s in bottom half most years.

  • Dylan

It doesn’t help that Zito really has that breaking ball and his changeup going well today.

  • scooper

@alan: The Rangers always hit. Check the stats for any year since Rudy has been here. Now we are having trouble hitting, and all of a sudden Rudy is a bad coach.
The Rangers NEVER pitched well. the pitching coaches couldn’t have been doing too great! Now Mike Maddux comes in (and Nolan Ryan is the pres.) and we are getting good pitching from basically the same guys we had last year.
Either way, coaches can only do so much. The players still have to perform.

  • The Beer Guy

Really, we just don’t know and its all just fan speculation, which is cool as that’s part of the deal.

Either Rudy says and teaches the right things, and the players don’t put it into practice.

Or, Rudy says and teaches unproductive things, and the players put those into practice.

Now tell me, how are any of us supposed to know that? Unless you’re there following every session, every BP, every meeting…it’s just guessing as to who is to blame.

  • TD

We need to start a big time JINX:

    Zito has the NO-HITTER going….

  • Dylan

It’s halfway through, but I think we on the verge of seeing something special today.

  • scooper

@DC: Texas has never been about OBP, they have never emphasized it. Check runs scored.

  • alan

2 to 0 the way this team his it might as well be 20 to 0. I guess turning guys from okay to great gets u a pass in life then I wish everybody in life could get that kind of pass

  • Fred

That’s 70 K in 184 AB for Salty. He’s right up there, too.

  • Tiger Woods' Front Teeth

220 ABs, 101 Strikeout. Courtesy of your Rangers 1B.

  • scooper

@beerguy: look at his track record. do you think we’ve always hit IN SPITE OF Rudy? Nope.

  • Fred

The way they’re going, just a matter of time before the Rangers get no-hit

  • scooper

@alan: I don’t know about you, but I haven’t turned anyone from good to great lately.

  • Rangers Fan

Is anyone else getting tired head of Chris Davis strikeout talk? Clearly we all know thie hitting is horrendous right now. We know his defense is stellar. Some say let him play through it. Some say send him down. Have I missed anything?

  • Evan Grant

@Dylan: Remember three guys from the Frisco team last year are now with the Rangers: Andrus, Davis, Holland. …

This year’s Frisco team is not as prospect heavy as it was a year ago, but Smoak and Beavan are premier prospects, Lemon, Poveda and Pina are legit prospects and there are a handful of other prospects there. It’s a lot different than a few years ago when each team had maybe one prospect.

  • Gravypan

@scooper Here’s the thing about Rudy. When a pitcher just doesn’t have it, this offense has shown a propensity to be aggressive and jump all over said pitcher.

But when you’ve got a pitcher who does have it, they turn this team’s aggressiveness against them. It’s absolutely ridiculous the number of at bats this team gives away because they’re striking out so damn much.

If Rudy is going to get tons of credit when this offense is hitting on all cylinders, guess what? He’s going to get the blame when this offense is struggling and hasn’t done a damn thing to make the necessary changes.

  • Rangers #1 Fan

@Rangers Fan: Yup, you summed it up.

  • scooper

@rangersfan: Yes, I am sick of it. And I think you summed it up nicely.

  • TD

To me the strikeouts of Chris “CHIP/CD/CRUSH” Davis don’t matter, because no one is ever on base anyways these days!

  • The Beer Guy

@Gravypan: Are these guys T-Ball players? Aren’t they capable of making adjustments on their own? Are they so dependent on a coach to tell them how to get out of a slump? Too much of a free pass for my taste.

  • alan

I guess my whole problem is I understand he cant go out there and do it for these guys but man why cant someone get Salty and Davis and others to be more patient. If A 20 yr old ( Andrus) can do it then surely he can point to those guys and say see what happens when you dont swing at everything in world.

  • scooper

@Gravypan: the fans may blame him (and you are entitled to your opinion), but no one in baseball blames him. Have you heard ANYONE from the national media say one negative thing about Rudy? Didn’t think so.

  • The Beer Guy

And from a cynic’s perspective, at least strikeouts work the pitcher more than those first pitch pop flies… :)

  • TD

So if Tony Romo goes 0-12 in the first half, it’s all on Jason Garret right??

  • alan

Thank you Gravypan at least someone else can see through their homer eyes and be honest here

  • scooper

@alan: you are entitled to your opinion, too.

  • Rangers Fan

We should give props to Kinsler. He’s been hitting better and of all differnt kinds. Even got down a bunt for a hit the other day and several walks. I’ve been happy with Andrus. The rest of the line up…not so much.

  • Prange Mantis

Can I just say that I liked it better Evan when I didn’t have to read through all of these comments to read what you have to say? The whole reason I check this website is so that I can see your opinion. These guys can create their own blog if they want. I think a lot of people, including myself, will stop reading if this continues.

  • The Beer Guy

@Alan: I am not celebrating Rudy in spite of the slump. I’m mad and frustrated. But my frustration is targeted toward the players. I would suppose we’re all “homers” if we’re fans…

  • TD

Oh it’s just a forum…go cry to your mamma.

  • scooper

@rangersfan: you are right. since Kins had his “revelation,” he has been doing a much better job.

  • Dylan

I agree with someon upthread – Tom using the “Our outs are hard!” excuse is getting a bit repetitive.

  • DC

Texas Rangers 196 walks 28th in league 541 strikeouts 25th in league .260 16th in league. But no need to change anything.

  • Michael in LH

Uh, what I said in the home run pool about the bats coming alive, scratch that. If we get no hit, I accept all the blame except for CD.

  • jb

I second the vote to keep Evan’s commentary on top. It won’t stop me from reading the blog(as i usually read the comments as well), but I do prefer the original format.

  • The Beer Guy

@Prange Mantis: Sorry but that doesn’t make any sense. Anything Evan says *within* the comments section is in one way or another a response to something others have posted here. So you’re complaining that you have to wade through comments from others to read what Evan writes, which is a response to what those others have written?

As far as I know, the things Evan posts that are unrelated to the chat are posted up top time-stamped.

  • Gravypan

@The Beer Guy: For the veterans, your point is valid. It’s one thing when it’s a guy like Chris Davis who isn’t able to either move a runner over with nobody out or get them home from third with one out. It’s another when it’s Michael Young stepping up to the plate and giving away an at bat with a strikeout.

I know I’ve knee jerked and called for Rudy’s head. But honestly, if they made a switch at the hitting coach position, it’s still on the players to get out of this funk.

  • Dylan

I’ve gotten the impression that Evan is just taking a couple of days off from heavy blogging.

  • scooper

This is going to be really embarassing if we get no-hit! Can you imagine, with the pitchers that SF has (Lincecum, Cain, Johnson) and we get no-hit by Zito?

  • Rangers Fan

I still think Zito is a legit pitcher with good stuff. From what I’ve seen of him it’s all in the head.

  • scooper

I don’t mind Evan’s commentary being at the top, but I like it when he lets us know in the comments that he has posted something up there. And when he is answering our questions, it is good to do it in the comments section.

  • alan

okay lets do something fun here how about a hitting pool I am going for Nelson Cruz anybody else venture to guess who will be first

  • Evan Grant

@Dylan: Taking a couple days off from HEAVY blogging is right, though, it could be argued that any blogging done by me is heavy. I’m, unfortunately, a heavy blogger.

@All: I think my experiment indicates a couple of things. I think it is more effective to separate my in-game commentary from our chat, but that it is also kind of a pain for many of you to keep going back to the top to see my comments. Now, I’ve got to come up with a system to best address both those needs. Who’s a tech expert?

  • Dylan

@alan – I’ll play. I think Jones gets the first hit.

  • caleb

I know Zito has been better this year, but if we can’t touch him up for a least a few hits, we are in trouble. He is a ten years younger Jamie Moyer.

  • TD

I predicted a no-hitter in the HR pool, so I will stick with that.

  • TD

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dylan

Holy Crap – I pulled that out of my butt.

  • alan

    I lose

  • Evan Grant

Well, I guess Andruw Jones does serve a purpose!

  • TD

I suck at predictions THANK GOD!

  • scooper

    Thank you, Andruw!

  • Gravypan

    Hanging curve

  • The Beer Guy

@Evan: I think what scooper suggested works for me, just a note down here to say there’s something new up top?

  • The Beer Guy

lol…my MLB.com feed is several minutes behind real time apparently! I just now saw Jones’ HR

  • Dylan

@Evan – There are some tech solutions out there (I’ll get some names for you as the game goes on).

One thing I’ve thought about mentioning was maybe you can “promote” some of the comments that move you to respond in comments to the main post as well (Community building, whut WHUT!), that way people who just want the highlights can get them and those in the comments get in on the action too.

  • Rangers Fan

So the SF fans choose to boo a clearly fair ball instead of applauding a pither who took a no-hitter in the 7th? Classy.

  • alan

Evan I appreciate anyway you do it I just appreciate your insite and glad you still have a place to give us your opinion.

  • Dylan

    http://news.cnet.com/8301-17939_109-9849503-2.html

This is a good tool. Downside is that it doesn’t play well with comments within it’s system but it does help the constant refresh. It’s one option.

  • Dylan

A couple of rough innings, but really a hell of an outing for Millwood today.

  • Dylan

    Rought day for Nellie, however.

  • Rangers Fan

Any more thoughts on Cruz as the DH next year?

  • Fred

As I said earlier, Cruz is an over rated OF

  • The Beer Guy

@Dylan: Definitely. Gotta give it to him for keeping us in this despite a no-hitter.

  • Rangers Fan

@ Fred…I’m not sure anyone has ever really said he was a great fielder.

  • Evan Grant

@Rangers Fan: I suppose it’s a possibility regarding Cruz at DH, but I really think once Borbon is in the big league lineup, the Rangers could rotate a number of outfielders through the DH spot to keep everybody fresh. I would try to keep Cruz off the field in day games per my suggestion above.

  • Fred

Going into this year, there was talk about him being a plus fielder. He does have a cannon, though

  • Dylan

    Damnit.

  • Rangers Fan

When the offense isnt going…you can’t make errors. And we made 2 errors.

  • Rangers Fan

oh no…eddie warming up. I get the give up feeling when he comes in these days.

  • Fred

Giants announcers said they haven’t seen range like Andrus’ all year

  • Rangers Fan

I’m calling the Omar pinch-hit thats coming next inning…gonna get the record breaking hit

  • 86 Davis

I’m now officially frustrated with this team.

Hitting. For the 30+ years I’ve been watching this team, I’ve been BEGGING for pitching. Now, when it FINALLY appears that we’ve got decent pitchers, our offense goes in the tank.

I’m SICK of watching Davis, Blalock, Salty and the rest FLAIL when up at the plate.

Does Davis need to get bellow .100 before he’s sent down? Sickens me.

Shut down inning. Do the pitchers know what they are?

RP. I now expect late inning losses (like last night). Not ENTIRELY the pitchers fault, because the offense stinks right now, but Jenning’s wild pitch was no surprise.

Cruz’s play in the OF (and at the plate) has been bad this series.

I’ve been working on not posting when frustrated (which has been a lot lately), but it has become too much, so I had to let it go.

OK, I feel a bit better. Sorry for the rant.

  • Fred

Well, Cruz cost Millwood an unearned run, a lot of pitches….and, I hope not a loss. He’ll get another AB, maybe he can do something positive

  • Auditor

Evan, is in not possible for you to cut and paste your time comments at the top into the the comments section below it? Simplest solution as you, on average, have about 12-15 game notes at the toop. Just leave the time stamp so we can tell the difference.

Yes it would be twice, but once the comment field starts getting to 100-200+ comments- the top is pretty far up.

Which is a nice problem to have. ;)

  • Dylan

It would be a real shame for Millwood to get a loss for this performance.

  • DC

Something to take your mind off the hitting this is pretty wild…..http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Wicked-video-Minor-leaguer-performs-major-leagu;_ylt=AtK1taYfKs8_Pf8va02a.BF0fNdF?urn=mlb%2C171207

isnt the purpose of a pinch hitter to get on base oh yeah we are talking about the Rangers who never saw a pitch they havent liked

A solution to the posting issue that’s more user-driven is just to open a new browser tab. Keep one on the comments and the other up top on Evan’s comments. Refresh as necessary.

  • Fred

    @Dylan-Couldn’t agree more

  • Auditor

4:57: Before anybody goes all ballistic on Nelson Cruz’s defense, let me say this: I think just about every problem he’s had this year has been sun-related. I think something can be done about that. I don’t think he’s had much problem in night games.

  • Rangers Fan

I have no idea why Omar didnt pitch hit there…

  • scooper

@beerguy: good point; I feel kind of silly for not thinking of it.

  • The Beer Guy

Ya know that old expression “That ball had eyes!” Well, ours have gone blind. Nothing finds a hole or a gap…

  • alan

oh my gosh a patient hitter you see it can be done thanks gosh for Andrus

  • Fred

I just think Cruz has poor instincts. Bad jumps and bad angles. Hard to lose a line drive in the sun. Problems have been day and night

  • The Beer Guy

@scooper: hehe, no worries, it just occurred to me.

  • The Beer Guy

WOW. I mean, just WOW. How frustrating is that?

  • DC

    New nic for Eddie Firestarter.

  • Rangers Fan

I’d much rather see Grilli pitching here.

  • Tim Perkins

Should we lose, the only positive I can take from it would be that surely this sweep will force JD to pull the trigger on something. My guess is that Davis is going down to OKC. And that his replacement will be with the team in time for the Arizona series. Also, if Everyday Eddie bombs here, I could see him being DFA’d.

  • DC

Anyone watch the video i put in ?

  • Dylan

@The Beer Guy – on the separate tabs: So simple it is genius.

  • Rangers Fan

I think Wash and JD have made it pretty clear Davis is not going down right now. They are not adding salary that is not pitching, imo.

  • Rangers Fan

@DC is it the minor league player that swings the bat with no hands?? That is crazy!

  • DC

    yes

  • Phil

Stunned that Eddie did well, but pleased; sadly, I expect no comeback from the offense.

  • The Beer Guy

@Dylan: I’ll just say it’s more like the notion of the ‘1000 typing monkeys’ :D

@DC: Just watched it, that’s pretty wild!

  • Rangers Fan

Uh Boggs…just watched 2 strikes right down the middle of the plate. Sick.

  • Dylan

Damnit. Hard not to feel like the arrow is pointed down right now and not just that they are in a slump.

  • Phil

    Wow…terrible AB for Boggs.

    WHERE DID THE OFFENSE GO??!?!?!?!?!?!?

  • Fred

    Hello, seep column!!

  • Clinton V.

I hope the Angels win tonight.

If this is a division-leading offense that’s an embarrassment to the American League.

  • DC

And they go meekly into the night.

  • Rangers Fan

I’m not sure any Ranger fan roots for them to drop in the standings.

  • Evan Grant

5:35: Well, now first place is up for grabs after Rangers lose 3-2 at San Francisco. Angels can take first with a win over Dodgers tonight. Not sure what the next move is for this club. Not sure they have a bunch of them to make. If they are going to stay the course, thye are going to have to let guys work through their offensive problems.

  • The Beer Guy

Terrible. Happy for the off-day tomorrow. Less frustration for me, better for the blood pressure. Cya all

  • Doug Fu

Last two games the starters’ ERA is 1.28. To go 0-2 is ridiculous. We have MAJOR problems on offense.

  • Phil

I see signs that this team has the same moxie as the Cowboys, Mavericks and Stars have, which is to say, none.

When things go bad for this team, I see no fire, and it frightens me.

Also, watching the other teams for years, the Rangers seem to have the same leadership void that the others have.

Romo, Dirk, Mo and MY are all reluctant leaders.

  • Tom B

Dump the age and start bringing up the youth. Have tryouts for next season. I would say after the ASG. The Rangers schedule does not get any easier. Batting a pitcher in these NL games is double tough for a team hitting like the Rangers are. A batter has to be able to hit his weight. These old guys as mentors are great when the team is winning. Let’s see the young guys.

  • Jack Daddy

Guys – this isn’t a leadership thing. It’s not a “hunger” or “drive”. This isn’t football. If anything, they are beign too aggressive. They have entirely last their way at the plate. Hitting is contagious, good and bad. I don’t know if Rudy has been spending too much time with Davis and has hasn’t been able to spend as much time with the rest. I don’t know what it is. But yes it is frustrating.

I do think there is something to Evan’s point about the FA’s to be (Blalock and Byrd becoming over agressive free swingers). I don’t have any interest in the old veterans taking ABs from young guys. Not sure the young guys are ready, but it sure looks like Borbon might be. Ramirez looks to be close. When he gets in a groove, there will be no excuse to not get him up here. I don’t care if it means releasing a contract. By August 1st, Borbon and Ramirez should be in the starting lineup as CF and DH. Holland needs to stay in the rotation and Felize should be up in the pen for a month, and moved into the rotation in September.

In the meantime, Boggs should be getting some PT. I’m not sure what else the coaches can do, other than start issuing strategic take signs to most of the hitters, to help them work the pitchers in the early innings.

  • Fred

@Evan-Are you posting under multiple names? I saw your 5:47 post was listed as “Auditor” in the comments, and remembered having seen “Auditor”, among other names high lighted in blue from time to time.
Just wondered. Curious minds wanted to know who’s who.

  • JustSaying

just got back from the game…..sat behind nolan and i swore he and the blond he was with had on giants caps………but neither of us had anything to cheer about except on a couple of andrus plays…..then as was discussing the superb defense that davis had he muffed the elvis throw…..i had said his defense was what kept him in the lineup but that “we expected better defense from a .200 hitter”………………….

  • JustSaying

we need to step up the nick johnson rental talks…….

  • Jolly

    of last 4 losses in a row….jennings has 2 of them…..cj hasn’t been used

  • becca

here’s to rooting for a dodgers win!

  • Auditor

@Fred, I was doing the first one as an example.

  • Jon

I think that the Ranger’s pitching improved dramatically after Nolan replaced Conner.

Although the players have always sworn by Rudy most seamheads think very little of him. The Ranger hiiting benefits from home park effects and are the the team is the worst at all or none; always swinging for the fences as a team. The solo homeruns are no suprise. Home runs are all they try to hit anyway.

Does Nolan know any good hitting coaches?

    I am serious……………..

  • Coach Willingham

    How bout Andruw!!!!

  • matt

Remember guys, most of us were not expecting this team to be much over .500 this year. So far they’ve far surpassed expectations. As much as I hate to say it, this would be a great time to trade millwood. He has been solid this year and chances are that we could get a pretty good return for him.

Even if the rangers get to the playoffs this year, do you really think they have the talent to beat the yankees or the tigers?

  • Jack Daddy

I think the biggest question, from a management and structure standpoint, that the rangers must figure out this year in order to get this thing to the next level is whether Rudy is the guy or not. I’m not opining because frankly, I don’t know. Nor am I qualified to weigh in. But if there is a philosophical difference, that MUST be addressed. I thought we went through this in mid-07 and found a middle ground.

All I know is, the season will slip away if they bat .200 as a team too much longer. I don’t mind this season not ending up in the playoffs, if we are developing players in the process. We are on the pitching front, for the most part. I would like to see Murray up here, but not sure anybody else is really ready. With respect to the bats, probably not yet, but they need to be watching Smoak, Borbon and Max very closely. I would rather lose with youth than lose with temporary players.

Btw, I mentioned to my son that last night wasn’t a total washout, that I would rather lose and have Holland pitch great, than lose and him get shelled. He thought about it for about 10 seconds and came back with, “yeah, I suppose so, but why not have them win and he pitch great? And, besides, winning with him getting shelled would still be better than losing and him getting shelled”.

    Genius.

  • Jack Daddy

one more thing – I said this last night, but I’m mystified. I’ve NEVER seen a team wide batting slump last this long. .200 for over a month? That’s insane. That makes that Brad Wilkerson look good. That makes Kevin Mench look good. When you it in those terms, it really is remarkable that Chris hasn’t been sent down. Which really speaks to how pathetic Blalock has been, meaning there isn’t really another option. Just shocking.

I keep saying it will turn around, but will it?

  • JustSaying

what seems WACK right now is that the Rangers don’t have any hitters in the system ready to be called up…….in the best minor league system in baseball and no one is ready…..timing sucks right now…….

  • Jack Daddy

just saying – agree, though that’s not an indictment of the system or management. in the last 14 months, you’ve seen Salty, teagarder, davis, andrus, boggs (frustrating they won’t play him) pulled up. Outfield was week, which is why they traded for josh. Murphy also was just a rookie last year.

Again, Borbon is close and he definitely isn’t BEHIND schedule. Max would probably be up if not for the abbreviated spring and then the injury. Arias and/or duran would be up, but they brought in vizquel.

smoak should NOT be up this year, but they may have to (though I think they resist that tempation and either ride out Blalock or trade for a rental (please Nick Johnson).

  • JustSaying

i winced when they picked up the $6 mil on blalock…so little in return for that $ $$ ..the bullpen needed that cash….

@jack i forgot how bad the veterans had been and why we had to deplete the farm so quickly……

  • Jolly

I would love to have Cat at 1st right now…….where is cat? can we pick him back up?

  • JustSaying

Nolan just didn’t look like a guy in the middle of a $450 million deal……..but it was pretty funny seeing him and the beautiful blond in giants/bank of america caps…….my wife swears she was rooting for the giants……..good sportsmanship…..

  • CJ'sAgent

don’t be disrepecting my boy now…….CJ wants to be paid in euros next season……seems he believes the euro is more solid than the dollar…….probably has to do with that nude french beach deal i got him……

  • JustSaying

missed bp today but as i arrived saw one lone ranger running on his own in the outfield……..39………scott feldman…..guy is just determined to be a ball player…….

  • Jack Daddy

Gill LeB. has a piece up making my same point. If this continues, you get Borbon and Ramirez up here in place of Byrd and Blalock’s ABs. You go with the young guys that will be here. I think Byrd will still be a valuable piece to this thing this year, but he needs to re-boot.

Its amazing the steam that this Nick Johnson idea is getting. I threw that out 4 weeks ago, based on a quick look at the rosters/contracts of the bad teams at the times. Its sticking like glue now. It makes so much sense, that I fear the Nats are going to be stupid in what they ask for back.

  • Jon

Why with the the world’s greatets hitting instructor is everyone looking to the minor league instructional program to improve hitting?

But then again why did Cruz have to keep going down to re-learn hitting?

Couuld it just possibly be the world’s greatest hitting instructor?

  • AB

Evan, I know you’re not serious when you say Marlon Byrd is swinging for a contract! There’s not a player on this team who goes all out EVERY game like Marlon. He’s swinging for hits and that’s what will get him his contract next year.
