The Depot: Rangers-Diamondbacks Live Blog

Here we go, I’m going to go back to original format tonite, but will try to periodically alert you to particularly pithy comments!

FINAL 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Total
Rangers 0 0 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 2
D’backs 2 2 0 3 0 1 0 0 0 8

8:40: Kevin Millwood, who was originally scheduled to start Saturday, has been pushed up a day to Friday’s game against San Diego. By doing that, Millwood, will be on schedule to start the final game of the three-game series with the Los Angeles Angels at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. If Millwood pitches the next time on four days rest as well, he’d pitch the series opener at the Angels. Derek Holland, who was scheduled to pitch Friday, will now pitch on Saturday and will not face the Angels in Arlington.

8:44: It occurs to me watching this lineup that there are so many players batting out of what should be their regular spot that maybe I’d just jumble everything up for a day or two. Hit Elvis Andrus leadoff, Ian Kinsler third, Michael Young cleanup and so forth. Just something to give a different look. In the time I typed this, though, the Rangers put runners on the corners.

8:47: Manager Ron Washington said he dropped Cruz to the fifth spot from cleanup today because he was trying to relieve some pressure from Cruz’s shoulder. Apparently, since Cruz had a double, triple and homer in the series finale at Boston, he’s been swinging for the fences. From the end of that game until the start of Tuesday’s he was hitting just .159.

“I’m just trying to take a little pressure off him,” Washington said. “He doesn’t have to swing for the fences. He’s strong enough to hit homers without trying so hard.”

Washington also put Marlon Byrd in the cleanup spot, noting Byrd’s 10-for-23 (.435) performance this year with runners in scoring position and two outs. He is 7-for-28 with runners in scoring position and less than two outs.

“It seems like the big hits we’ve been getting lately, Marlon has been getting them,” Washington said.]

9:09: Chris Davis now has 102 strikeouts and his season average has fallen to .193. My personal opinion was that if the Rangers wanted to try and send him down and get a quick fix for him, this road trip would have been the perfect opportunity. They could have subbed out Hank Blalock or Andruw Jones at first and gotten a necessary boost in offense since they were losing the DH in NL parks. And then Davis could have had another two weeks leading up to the All-Star break to get himself right. To me, the needed boost in offense would have offset the loss in defense. It would have also been productive in helping Davis get back to the big leagues with the most time to have an impact on the season. The Rangers opted to stay with the defense, which remains stellar. But I’m afraid, they are going to have to revisit the possibility of sending him to the minors for a tutorial and it may take longer now. He just really is messed up at the plate.

No pitcher is going to offer him a hittable fastball as long as he keeps jumping out and swinging at offspeed pitches, regardless of location. That brings me to this: The word going around baseball right now is that the Rangers are the easiest team in the league to pitch to. If you get in trouble, just throw a changeup. They’ll chase.

9:35: Instincts are unpredictable. Ron Washington said he was putting Marlon Byrd in the cleanup spot partly because of his batting average with runners in scoring position and two outs, but he was only a .250 hitter with runners in scoring position and less than two outs and he had more at-ats (28) with less than two outs than with two outs (23). But lo and behold if Byrd didn’t deliver a run-scoring double with two outs in the third.

9:41: Arizona is encouraging voters at the park to fill out 100 ballots apiece. Nice to see MLB teams are holding to the beliefs on which this country was founded like “one man, one vote.” (Did you hear “America” in the background as you read that). Thus endeth my moral indignation.

9:46: Saltalamacchia and Davis had back-to-back singles to start the fourth. First time they’ve been on base at the same time since June 13.

9:48: Will say this, it’s hot with the roof open tonight, but we are getting a great view of a fantastic sunset. Lots of color in the Western Sky.

10:00: You absolutely can’t afford to walk the No. 8 hitter in an NL game. Matt Harrison has done it twice and on both occasions, it has contributed to an Arizona run.

10:03: I don’t think I’m ever going to understand how Ron Washington views Jason Jennings’ role. He said he didn’t want to bring him with runners on base. The entire bullpen should be fresh tonight. Go to a true long reliever. Jennings, I thought was supposed to pitch in close games. This is a chance for Doug Mathis to pitch and try and keep the game close so that in the sixth or seventh if the Rangers get back in it, they have Jennings available. If they don’t, then they have a fresh Jennings available on Wednesday.

10:08: That’s six of 11 inherited runners Jennings has allowed to score. He is not the guy to bring in with men on base.

10:22: Question: Rangers appear headed for their fifth straight loss. What do you consider a significant losing streak in baseball? Four games? Five games? At what point does it become a significant number?

10:30: Elvis Andrus just got thrown out on an Elvis Andrus-caliber play. No wonder he disputed the call. Just like so many guys he’s thrown out this year, it’s hard to believe a ball hit where it was could be turned into an out. Great play by J.D. Stephen Drew in the hole at short.

10:38: If you were going to ask, no, I’ve never seen a run score on a wild throw from the catcher back to the pitcher. I mean, if you aren’t counting Little League.

11:00: I’m wondering if there will be a team meeting tonight. Five games. Sloppy loss. But I probably jump the gun on the time for a meeting.

It’s Evan! Hey, I have a eatery that you need to try while in PHX. You need to eat at Oregano’s if you haven’t been there before. The meatball sandwich is spectacular!

  • Evan Grant

The place I’d like to get to, Ehren, is this place:

    http://www.chinobandido.com/

  • obagain

    Hello everyone.

  • becca

nothing says “delicious food here” like a panda dressed as a bandito

  • obagain

So, are we going to score 3 runs tonight to get a win?

  • becca

not to be a debbie downer, but by the end of the season, will the rangers have left more men on base or have more strikeouts?

  • obagain

    Have all the bandwaggoners left?

  • obagain

becca, that is going to be close.

  • scooper

    nope, still here!

  • alan

The object is to not score the run mayeb we should tyr some reverse psychology to score some here

  • obagain

Quick DP and lets end the inning.

  • becca

i noticed that the arizona pitcher has a higher batting average than about half of the rangers lineup.

  • Ehren

We saw that place when we were there for spring training…well my sister lives there too but i go for spring training. :) we’ll go to chino bandido next time. love that mascot.

  • Ehren

I just hit 25 votes! LOL

  • walrus

This game is almost out of reach.

  • DC

Evan can you tell me why right handers always seem to have more break on pitches than lefties.

  • obagain

Being in a slump is bad, having your whole offense in a slump at the same time is deadly.

  • DC

Looks like Rangers are gonna strike out 15 plus times tonight.

  • alan

maybe someone should pull salty and davis aside and say you see what the 20 is doing that is how you become a good hitter

  • Evan Grant

Whoa, sarcasm alert, Will Robinson! Lots of it in the air tonight and I’m not sure why. Just to rewind: This club, which most suspected would finish in third or in last, enters the day its game in first place in the AL West.

The season has hit a trouble spot, but how many of you thought that the trouble would be how to stay on top of the division?

I don’t want to be Henry Homer here, but this is a good young team that is going through a painful adjustment program. Just look at the bottom four spots in the lineup tonight: Salty, Davis, Andrus, Harrison. Not a guy who entered the year with a full season of big league experience.

  • The Beer Guy

I’ve never been a serious fan of any other team, but I wonder if other teams’ fans are as downbeat/cynical/pessimistic/whatever-you-want-to-call-it as Ranger fans tend to be?

  • becca

i still have hope for these guys for sure. but this slump is crazy. maybe because it’s all happening at the same time like obagain said. it’s just wild to see. and even wilder to try and pressume what could possibly fix it. i guess it’s just time? but yes, there are still 5 gagillion (verified) positives about this team.

  • The Beer Guy

Hmmm, maybe Cubs fans! It just occurred to me :)

  • becca

p.s. debbie downer would like to challenge henry homer to an arm wrestling match.

  • scooper

I agree, Evan! How many of us really believed that we would be in first place on June 22? We might have hoped, but we certainly didn’t KNOW. We’re a young team having some trouble. Of the three phases of the game, I’m glad the trouble is with OFFENSE. That’s the area where I am most confident that we can turn it around.

  • obagain

Evan, that doesnt mean we cant want them to be better,
We all know they are better than they are playing right now but we are being outpitched, outhit and outscored by teams that we should be beating.
If the angels were lights out and caught us I could understand that, I dont want these young guys to start hearing the summer slump and start believing it.

  • scooper

@beerguy: Cowboys’ fans are like this, too! I know because I am one of them. I think it may be a DFW thing.

  • The Beer Guy

@scooper: No offense to you personally, but Cowboys fans can suffer till the sun goes black! I have hated that team since birth!! :P

  • obagain

beerguy, go to the yankee or redsox board.
They go crazy when they lose 2 in a row and start talking about firing the manager and releasing players and sending players down.

  • Ehren

Absolutely agree Evan. They’ve shown real progress this year. I’d never thought we would be in this position this year.

  • scooper

@beerguy: no offense taken! I certainly understand the attitude.

  • obagain

Looks like harrison is going back to nibbling instead of being agressive.

  • The Beer Guy

@obagain: lol, ok that’s really too much…sort of like calling for the QB to be benched after one incomplete pass! Those fans are just too spoiled by success (versus the bitter negativity of Rangers and Cubs fans I guess)

  • scooper

there have been so many positive things about this team (1st place, pitching, defense) that I get tired of only hearing people talk about the negative. I’d like to actually enjoy some of this! And I really hope that the players don’t listen to or read anything that the fans and/or media comment about.

  • The Beer Guy

I should probably just be quiet about teams. The Rangers are the only DFW team I like…don’t wanna upset the natives too much :D

@obagain: Yeah it does look like that. Shows there’s only so much a coach can do…if the player isn’t going to follow suggestions…

  • obagain

I dont like how they are playing right now but I will still be here at the end of the season, always have and always will.

  • Evan Grant

@Scooper: feel the same way. that’s why i don’t read DMN blog anymore.

  • King

Is there no HD coverage tonight?

  • alan

I want to explain myself other the Texas Longhorns the Rangers are my faviorte team but this is like watching a movie and you know something bad is about to happen you dont dont know when, how or where but you know it is coming and it will happen but you just dont realize how bad it is going to be

  • becca

i’ll be here too. with my julio franco figurine on the couch next to me.

gun showed harry throwing 96. is that accurate? because if he’s going that high, he’s certainly attacking.

  • obagain

beerguy, that is why I like maddox.
He gives pointers but makes the players believe what he is saying is there idea so they really believe in what they are doing.

  • Ehren

    no HD tonight.

  • The Beer Guy

@Evan: I agree. I was all for letting him work it out, but it’s been going on too long now and very little, if any, sign of turning around. On the other hand, as Lewin noted, Mark Reynolds went through very similar last year and turned it around. Not sure if a AAA trip was involved in that for him…

  • TD

    Just kill me.

  • walrus

This is the Diamondbacks who are having more trouble scoring runs than we do, isn’t it? Watching our guys play the weak underbelly of the NL West and losing means these guys are in trouble.

  • Jack Daddy

    Evan,

Not upset with the losing actually, for the very reason you are making. I’m more interested in the “how are they playing” and signs for the future. I am very disheartened by the approach at the plate by some of the mainstays. I am also frustrated that 3 players that won’t be here next year are getting significant ABs and only one is producing (Byrd) and barely at that. I’m not a fan of rushing people to the majors (e.g., Smoak should not sniff Arlingon this year), but Borbon appears near ready and Max is 25 years old. Once his wrist heals, he should be up instead of Jones (Jones is really just DHing anyway).

The approach at the plate is what has most people disgusted, I think. Plus, once they fall behind, we are essentially DONE, with this offensive attack — would anyone bet $2 to win $20 that we’ll come back tonight?

Re/ Danny Baez – why would we exhaust money or (worse) prospects for an over-priced middle reliever, when that’s not the isssue here? ODay and Grili have proven you can get guys cheap and that the whole endeavor in filling the back of the rotation is a crap shoot.

This is the worst I’ve ever seen a team slump at the plate. Its so bad, that it makes me question whether they are slumping or whether this is what they are? Maybe Davis is Kevin Maas. Byrd has always been considered a 4th OF that will get over-exposed by playing every day. That has happened. Blalock is a veteran and his approach at the plate is embarrasing and sets an example for the younger guys. People talk about Palmeiro, Gonzo, Arod, Pudge, Sierra, Canseco — let’s examine this guy. Mike Bascik (spelling?) proclaimed as much 2 summers ago on the Ticket (was a Saturday and nobody was listening, so didn’t get any attention).

Harrisons struggles (not critizing, he’s just a second year player), McCarthey’s injury, Padilla’s head — all of these factors convince me that Holland MUST remain in the rotation. We need to develop our potential ACES.

Again, I’m happy overall, but very disappointed in the offense. I can tolerate Salty’s and Davis’ and Elvis’ woes (though it has gotten past the silly point with Davis). I can’t tolerate seeing Jones, Blalock and Byrd up there. Particularly, the 1st two – it’s an automatic powerdown for me and I want to vomit.

If do anything at the deadline other than bring in a 1B rental, we are making a huge mistake.

  • RAT

Look at that… Even Harrison is more patient than half the Rangers.

All I’m asking for is some patience at the plate!

  • The Beer Guy

@obagain: There was an interesting story (from Jayson Stark I think) on ESPN’s website the other day about Huston Street. When he got to Colorado, the pitching coach wanted him to make a small adjustment on where he put his foot on the mound. Street blew it off as unimportant, and proceeded to continue to struggle. Finally, he gave in and did what the coach had said, and he’s been great since. So, yeah, I agree that a good coach is one that can get the players to try what he suggests, but sometimes I’m sure their egos get in the way.

  • becca

i love that harrison got on base! are they pinch running for him?

  • Jack Daddy

meant “filing the back of the bullpen”, not “rotation”

  • JustSaying

Ownership creates this cynicism……we should be looking for pieces to make a pennant run and instead we’re looking for a bailout of our owner…..

  • becca

    oh, guess not.

  • scooper

Harrison taking a walk is a little different than a position player. Wash would prefer it if the pitchers never even took the bat off of their shoulders.

  • alan

amen Jack Daddy but i bet you .50 cents that they score at least one or strike out 10 times

  • DC

What gets me is for the last 30 years this team could hit any pitcher even the CY winners yet this year they are making every pitcher look like CY.

  • Red

@Evan- what happened to the Harrison-Teagarden battery?

  • scooper

    Here’s Marlon’s 2-out chance!

  • Mike E

    Evan,
I’m sure this has been brought up at some point before, but has anyone checked up on Davis’ eyesight?

  • Jack Daddy

    2 more things –

    1. coaches fry all the time when a team struggles. The approach is CLEARLY what is wrong with this offense. You fire Rudy if they aren’t in first at the break. We’ve seen this before (3 straight playoffs vs. Yanks).

    2. why aren’t take signs being issued? If the batters won’t change their approach, the coaches need to help them work the count, especially early in games. seems simple. maybe they are and we just don’t know.

I don’t see this thing turning around anytime soon. we are mediocre vs. average pitchers and helpless angainst anyone with good stuff.
    a

  • Ehren

    maybe harrison will steal 3rd!

  • becca

    great hit!

  • Jack Daddy

sorry – distracted tonight. meant you fire Rudy if they haven’t turned it around by the break (don’t care whether they are in first or not).

  • TD

    Sweet.

  • RAT

    Woo a run!

Hopefully the team follows Marlon’s lead and works the count. That’s what I want, let’s start a 20 run rally!

  • The Beer Guy

All in all, I still think it’s better to have the pitching doing well generally, but batters in a slump. I have more confidence that the hitting is there and will come back. If the pitching tanked, I wouldn’t be so confident…

  • Ehren

cruz is going for the fences…

  • Jack Daddy

last thing (hey, making up for lost time) – hitting (both good and bad) is contagious. Blalock and Davis has make everyone in the room sick. Davis should be sent down, Halladay/Volquez style, all the way to AZ league and should spend 1-7 days at each stop until he shows he’s ready to move up. If it takes 10 days, great. If 30 are necessary, so be it. Cutting Hank would also send a message to these guys that swinging for the fences with 2 strikes, that not working the count, is not part of our culture and has no place here.

  • TD

    LET’S SIGN BARRY BONDS.

    (half-joking)

  • Fred

@obagain-ain’t gonna win it with 3.
    Rotattion:
    Who is the weak spot:
Harrison? Had a couple of good games back to back last month and won some games last year–but body of work isn’t ML quality. But young, and can develop.
Mccarthy? Teases us, once in a while, but can’t stay healthy and not consistent when he is.
Padilla? Head case. Never know what you’re gonna get. Can be great. Can be a cancer. Free agent.
Holland-Very raw. No consistent breaking ball. Amazing fast ball/change uo combo and great presence/make up. Much room to develop.
Millwood and Feldman-solid to very good, until we find better.
    Opinions?
I’m go with Millwood and Feldman. Trade Padilla at the deadline. Hang in there while Holland develops (knowing you’re going to lose some games.Give Harrison a couple more chances, but not commit to him. Give McCarthy one more chance if/when he heals, but pull the plug if it’s same ole.

  • alan

jack daddy I said the same thing the other day and people said we would be a laughing stock if we let him go and he would be snatched up in a minute but. I have seen little league teams more patient then this and its like Bob and Dan said on the Ticket and it use to always bug me but know i see their point they have never seen one coach in this area get a free pass like he does I mean the guy can do no wrong I am not saying he is not a good coach but clearly if you cannont get 2 guys to stop swingging at pitches that they have no chance at hitting and yes I realize that he cannot do it for them but if the pitching is bad get rid of the pitcher why is it not the same for the hitting somebody please explain.

  • Evan Grant

@Mike E: It’s been brought up. No vision issues for Davis.

@Jack Daddy: Don’t you think that firing Rudy Jaramillo for a poor month of offensive execution would be a little harsh compared to 15 years of overall success?

Besides, the hitters deserve most of the responsibility here. It’s not like Jaramillo is telling them to go up there and attack.

  • The Beer Guy

Arizona has given up the 6th most runs in MLB at 341 coming into this game.

  • Fred

Red–I think they need teagarden more to try to keep Padilla from blowing up.

  • scooper

@Fred: they aren’t going to be able to trade Padilla unless they eat most of his salary. Remember, no one claimed him when he was on waivers. If we are going to have to pay him anyway, we might as well take what good starts we get from him.

  • obagain

Looks like they are starting to hit some.

  • DC

I’m gonna be really mad if they give up a few prospects for BP help when they have Murray and Eyre pitching well in AAA. When it’s not the BP hurting us.

  • becca

    base hit davis! hot dog!

  • RAT

Salty and Davis got on base…

    The tides are turning!

  • obagain

Evan, I have talked to rudy some and he does preach attacking the AB.
He wants them to look for their pitch and if they get it drive it somewhere.

  • Fred

Vision doesn’t have a lot to do with not catching up with FB at the letters and chasing breaking balls in the dirt. Almost llike you have to put a girdle on him to only swing between the belt and the knees, and if it’s spinning near the knees, lay off. I’d still keep him in the majors and let him try to hit his way out of it, tho.

  • Jack Daddy

Btw, Harrison hasn’t seemed right since he’s been back. I wonder if he was rushed too soon. Then again, if you take out his 4-5 start stretch when he was truly dominate, his season has not been good at all.

I like Harrison quite a bit and believe he should be allowed to stay in rotation all year, no matter what, but not at the expense of Holland. Have no idea when or if BMac comes back, but will be pissed if Holland gets bumped again.

Brings me back to this – we couldn’t get anyone to take Padilla’s K and we want a hitter but can’t afford to take on anyone’s contract. I keep hearing we may have to pull a Casey Blake and offer a greater prospect package to get somebody to take the salary of anyone we trade for. Why not combine the moves? Trade Padilla to somebody and eat his contract in return for a decent prospect (by eating is $$ you would get takers since enough teams need an arm). Then trade that prospect(s) to the team that you want the hitter from. Its essentially a trade of a pitcher for a hitter. Jermaine Dye comes to mind. Trade Padilla to Philly, who is desparate for a starter. Eat his salary and get a prospect that you can flip to the Sox (with one of your own) for Dye if they eat his contrct. Doesn’t have to be Dye, but this would be a way to a deal done.

  • scooper

@JackDaddy: you don’t even fire a pitching coach over a 1-2 month pitching slump. why would you fire a hitting coach who has overseen a team with the prodigious offensive output that the Rangers have had for years? I have never seen a team-wide slump like this, but I don’t believe that this is all Rudy’s fault. You know, he actually has a great track record!

  • becca

ha. harrison didn’t look so comfortable with that bunt attempt. let the kid swing!

  • Red

@Fred- Old saying, if it aint broke, don’t fix it. I liked the results we were seeing from Harrison with Taylor working with him. I know Ranger brass are all high on Salty, but I just don’t see it.

  • RAT

    Harribunt did not look comfortable.

    Fail!

  • becca

and lookie there, more hits. hot dog indeed.

  • S. Arcasm

that is the first line drive base hit I’ve seen Kinsler hit in months.

  • scooper

@obagain: there is nothing wrong with looking for their pitch and driving it. I think they just need to make sure that it really is “their pitch.” Swinging at a FB isn’t the same thing as looking for a FB in a certain zone and swinging if you get one there (which is what I think Rudy means).

  • Fred

@Scoop- I know, I know–but I hope things change at trading deadline. They usually do.
By the way, I sincerely hope that they do not see the answer to the rotation question as trading prospects for a short term # 2. There are lots of good arms coming along.

  • Jack Daddy

    Evan,

I think there has been over-rating of the offensive success. We have been so far behind so many games for these years that your hitting #s get inflated — pitchers aren’t trying to be too fine when they are up 7-1. The 3 times we made the playoffs we had offensive output that was offensive. I think its been 2 months and advocate giving him a 3rd. But I’ve seen managers roll for less, with a better track record. Hurdle had the Rockies in the World Series 2 years ago.

Finally, how many of these hitters inflated their numbers artificially? Finally, finally, that was the old approach with old management. His style appears to be in direct conflict with the philosophy of Wash and the way JD wants to build this. Hey, what do i know. But 2 + 2 isn’t adding up to 4.

  • The Beer Guy

Good hit by Kinsler, but ugly ABs by Murphy and Harrison (I can bunt better than that!)

  • TD

They don’t teach bunting at the major league level Beer Guy :p

  • scooper

@fred: I still believe that we shouldn’t make a trade for starting pitching unless we are getting a true ACE that we would have for at LEAST 1 1/2 years. Other than that, stick with the plan and play the young guys.

  • The Beer Guy

Clearly! Harrison looked about as nervous as a virgin at prom!

  • Jack Daddy

@scooper – again, I don’t value his track record as greatly as others and I think we are trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. I’m not basing this no 2 months. I don’t see this changing anytime this season or next. I’m not so sure this is a slump as much as it is a complete breakdown in their approach at the plate. Its not like balls are being hit hard and just not falling in. Strikeout records are being threatened, pitchers are NOT being worked at ALL and the situational hitting is abysmal.

I don’t care about a 2 month slump. I’m not convinced this is that simple and am really beginning to believe we’ll be saying these same things next June. Ask me again at the break.

  • scooper

@JackDaddy: personally, I disagree; however you are entitled to your opinion.

  • Evan Grant

@JackDaddy: Understand how you feel about the offense at this point, but numbers and enthusiastic endorsements over the last 15 years point to this guy having success. The Rangers haven’t yet sent Davis down for his failure; why would they fire the coach?

Also on Padilla: Trust me on this. No team that Vicente Padilla has ever pitched for is going to take him on a second time around. Promise.

  • DC

Why would you trade for starting pitching thats not the problem and they already have more than they have spots.

  • TD

@beerguy: thanks, again, for mentioning opening another tab. it works just fine!

  • becca

is padilla really REALLY that hated?

  • S. Arcasm

Harrison when he does get ahead in the count can’t finish them off.

  • Jack Daddy

but like I’ve said on multiple occasions, I’ll take the good pitching. Hitting can be addressed in short order (you can trade pitching for hitting, hard to go the other way). I love the way our staff is shaping up for next year:

    Milly
    Harrison
    McCarthy
    Feldman
    Holland

with Feliz challenging for a spot in the sping and Hurley and Beavan challengers for a mid-season call-up

3 new starters out of 9 in the lineup (Smoak, Borbon and Max). A guy like Mitch Mooreland really coming on strong and perhaps working into the corner outfield/DH mix.

Back of the bullpen seemingly VERY strong.

  • obagain

Scooper, by being agressive with their pitch they are not worrying about the count and just looking for a pitch to drive.
He does not believe in working the count unless the pitcher does not give in and and give them their pitch.
If you walk to the plate thinking swing at the first good pitch you get fooled easier.
I am not saying fire rudy, he is a great hitting coach but he doesnt want the hitter letting a good pitch go by no matter the count.

  • DC

I’d never watch another game if they signed bonds.

  • The Beer Guy

    @scooper: No problem!

Yep, something’s not right with Harrison. Physical, mental or both, but he’s not the same pitcher as he was during that nice streak he went on before the DL stint.

  • TD

Your lying…lol. Why can A-ROD play now??

  • becca

    @dc: same here.

  • S. Arcasm

I don’t think Harrison brought his A game tonight.

  • obagain

becca, yes padilla is that hated.

  • scooper

@DC: you never have too much pitching. what we have are quite a few guys who would be 4th or 5th starters (at this stage of their careers) with playoff-caliber teams. and our ace (Millwood) would be a 2 or a 3 (depending on the team). If we really think we are going to contend in 2010, we need an ACE. Our young guys are not going to develop into aces by then (unless a miracle happens).

  • Evan Grant

10:03: I don’t think I’m ever going to understand how Ron Washington views Jason Jennings’ role. He said he didn’t want to bring him with runners on base. The entire bullpen should be fresh tonight. Go to a true long reliever. Jennings, I thought was supposed to pitch in close games. This is a chance for Doug Mathis to pitch and try and keep the game close so that in the sixth or seventh if the Rangers get back in it, they have Jennings available. If they don’t, then they have a fresh Jennings available on Wednesday.

  • Jack Daddy

    Evan,

I thought that about Padilla and Philly- but we were the team that was willing to bring Kenny Rogers back here. But I’m sure you’re right. Bottom line – if some team is in a pennant race and they are talking about just being tied to the guy for 2 months and not paying ANY of his salary, I would THINK somebody would be a taker — if not and he’s that much of a cancer, then we are fools for having him ourself. Remember, the Cubs gave Milton Bradley $30MM.

As to Rudy, I have no doubt that he’ll continue to be here – there is no way they’ll fire this year or next. I was merely saying what I’d do. Of course players like him – they hit homeruns under his tutelage, which brings the $$s. Even this year, we’re at the top of the league. Blalock is on a pace for nearly 25. Hardly a successful season though.

You’re right at the end of the day – mostly just my frustration.

  • TD

Well….what can you say? We ran into the vaunted Diamondbacks buzzsaw. We had no chance coming into this thing!!

  • scooper

@evan: you are right. I thought he said he wasn’t going to bring Jennings in with men on base!

  • The Beer Guy

Very much agree. Not sure at all why you bring in Jennings there…

  • The Beer Guy

@TD: It’s true. You can’t stop them, you can only hope to slow them down!

  • DC

@ scooper so they trade 4 or 5 prospects for an ace. What if it ends up being like DVD and they keep the ones the end up being the worse prospects. Then were back to build for 2015?

  • Jack Daddy

oh well, early night to bed. I can’t say I disagree on Jennings either. That was a spot for your long man.

Last thing I’ll say on Rudy is that I don’t know why he seems to be the only person in management/coaching in this town that has alwasy escaped scrutiny/wrath. I’ll restate – it’s easy to put up great numbers when the other pitcher is alway working with a huge lead. Look at tonight. The minute the score creeped to 4-0, we started to get some pitches to hit. Notice what’s been happening in all of these close games when pitchers aren’t just pitching to contact and they are really trying to work over our guys. What happens? They get worked over.

Whatever. Maybe by the break the offense is clicking and we’ll all be singing campfire songs together. But I’ll say this – when the fire that “idiot” wash rants come out (with their very clear undertones if you know what i mean) it will make me insane.

  • scooper

@obagain: I understand the difference, but that is his style and he (and the Rangers) have had success with it for years. It is nice (and sometimes preferable) to work the count, but I don’t hear any complaints when we are hitting.

  • The Beer Guy

Crazy…Arizona’s record on the road is 15-18, at home it’s 14-23. They also have the second worst record in MLB, better only than the mighty Nationals. This sucks.

  • obagain

I am not a wash fan so I try to stay out of some of these decisions but here are a few things to remember about this year.
Cruz is out cleanup hitter, now we rarely see him there.
We will have a consistant lineup every day.
We almost never see the same lineup.
We will bring holland along slowly, 3 of his first 5 games he entered with the bases loaded.
I dont listen to much wash says, he is the one big downer for me this seasin.

  • Evan Grant

@JackDaddy: I will say that I think you are on to something with the idea that pitchers are pitching Ranger hitters tougher this season because they know they can’t afford to make many mistakes. That right there is a sign of progress being made by the pitching staff.

And I think one thing we tend to all start to expect is that progress happens in a very linear manner. It doesn’t. This team has made significant progress this year even though the offense has taken a step backwards.

  • scooper

@DC: you either trust your evaluation of your prospects (and other team’s players) or you don’t. We are going to HAVE to trade some of them for the simple reason that not all of them can play in Arlington, anyway. Some of the guys that we trade are going to have a lot of success somewhere else (remember, they are talented). You can’t be afraid to pull the trigger because you MAY give up some talent.

  • Evan Grant

@obagain: The lineup was pretty consistent when Josh Hamilton was in it. Much experimentation – and lately desperation – has taken place because of the absence of Hamilton.

  • TD

Ok, I have been having fun, joking around about Barry Bonds and what not, but in all seriousness…..It is good that we are contending, I am of the opinion that you build a lead to sustain these swoons, and we are still in first place. The Angels were the hottest team in baseball, and it wasn’t enough to catch us…yet. We will turn this thing around, and we DONT need to VEER off of our course and trade the farm away, cause that don’t guarantee CRAP anyways. It’s a marathon, and we could get HOT again at any moment. I don’t know what this RANT is about other than maybe “be careful what you wish for” and have P A T I E N C E. GO RANGERS!

  • Evan Grant

10:22: Question: Rangers appear headed for their fifth straight loss. What do you consider a significant losing streak in baseball? Four games? Five games? At what point does it become a significant number?

  • Jack Daddy

Evan – the other thing that strikes me this year is that other than the Jays series (when we got shut down by hamburger), it seems we are constantly running into other team’s top arms. Look at the SF – get Cain and Zito. AZ – Max and Haren (after Sea misses both). Maybe its my imagination (we did miss Oswalt and the aformentioned Jays series where we missed Doc). I don’t know. Just altogether strange for me.

But like you said, I think this year is tremendous progress and actually am fretting more over Harry’s last few starts than the last 6 weeks of hitting combined. He is falling behind hitters and when he does get ahead he’s not putting them away.

Its just frustrating to see LAA sweep SF and then we go in and get swept. Sea sweeps AZ and then we go in and lay this egg.

  • TD

@EVAN: 5 or 6 games is very significant in my opinion.

  • Jack Daddy

TD – you are spot on re/ the reason why you build those leads. You have to weather the waves. Jeez – 4 days ago the Angels were the hottest team in baseball, then they lose 3 straight. The Rockies announced a firesale and then rip off 17 of 18. Yanks looked like a monster and now have their own streak. Jays have been up and down. Really, on the Dodgers and Sox have been consistently good.

Hamilton will make a big difference – just hope its not too late.

But I do hate this – you know its bad when you wished you had watch Confessions of a Shopaholic with your wife instead of watching the game!!!!

  • obagain

I would say 4 games signifigant, your 1,2 and 3 SP should not all slump together, if they do they are not 1,2 and 3 SP.
5 means every pitchers in the rotation has a loss during the streak.

  • JustSaying

@evan what makes me crazy about jennings is the team always does exactly what it says it is not going to do…..180 every time…..

  • t ball

Just got home and happy, happy, happy to see the return of the old format. Not happy to see the score.

  • DC

Talent doesn’t mean success ask Mickey Sasser or Chuck Knoblauch.

  • Fred

Not a bad AB for davis, even with the FB to left

  • DC

You never know what a players mental make up will be till they are in the fire.

  • Jack Daddy

obagain – Holland and Millwood were terrific in their starts. with any kind of offense (and defense for milly) they easily win those games.

  • TD

@Jack Daddy: That girl in that movie, ISLA FISHER, is smoking hot! LOL….I got dragged to that at the theater. HAHA…..

  • The Beer Guy

Welp, that’s enough for me. Maybe I’ll have a surprise in the morning, but I doubt it. Good night folks

  • pirate

this is like death by a thousand cuts.

  • pirate

    dont leave Beer Guy!

  • DC

Evan 5 that means your (ACE) failed too.Except in this case the bats are the losers.

  • Evan Grant

@Fred: I agree on Davis’ at-bat. Fouled off a pitch. Went the opposite way. All with two strikes.

  • Fred

I have always (at least, usually) supported Wash. But what the hell was the rationale for letting Jennings hit? To save the bullpen? To save a pinch hitter until the game is over? It’s not like Jennings is knocking them down.

  • S. Arcasm

I would be ecstatic if it is only a 5 or 6 game streak, but they way they are playing it could be much worse. Unless the bats pick up and soon, the Angels are going to wave bye bye to the Rangers, especially after the head to head stuff next week.

  • DC

Evan did you see my ? about the break on pitches and do you know the answer?

  • Jack Daddy

TD – back when I cared about updating things on my site, was planning something on Isla Fischer (was when of the early she’s hot girls). She’s awesome.

I’ve mentined it a few times on here but haven’t gotten any response – anyone seen The Hangover? Freaking hilarious.

  • DC

    Way to go salty.

  • becca

well, not the prettiest play of the night.

  • S. Arcasm

I also agree with Evan that Jennings does not belong in a game down by 5 runs. If Jason is an integral part of your bullpen in close games, why in the world is he pitching tonight? If you can’t trust Mathis in a lost cause, why is he in the bullpen? It’s not like these guys have a recent history of 5 run comebacks.

  • pirate

wow, Nadel sounds bothered by the joke of a play by those two knuckleheads. come on guys. this team seems to be mentally checked out.

  • scooper

Salty called time on that one.

  • becca

does this mean teagarden gets the start tomorrow?

  • Fred

Salty is still very raw. There have been lot of time this year where the pitcher has had to jump for his throwbacks.

  • Jack Daddy

Fred – my hunch on letting Jennings hit? He’s actually a very good hitter. Knocked 17 HRs his last year at Baylor when (I belive) he won the silver spikes award (am in getting the name right?). You know its bad when your middle relief arm has a better bat than anything you have on the bench.

  • becca

and yes, if you have a guy sitting in your bullpen for this exact situation, you use him. mathis is just a warm body at this point. and he needs to be used.

  • obagain

scooper, you can call for it but the ump has to grant it, you cant assume he will.

  • Jack Daddy

    Evan,

I believe I’ve seen it once before in a Rangers game. Let me do some research.

  • DC

They have to do something about the bats breaking someone is going to get seriously hurt soon.

  • JustSaying

well salty is certainly going to make the highlight reels……..

  • scooper

Seriously, am I the only one who saw that? The ball was in the dirt, Salty asked for another ball. The Ump raised his left hand, while reaching for a new ball with his left. You can’t put another ball in play without calling time out. Once time is out, it doesn’t start again until the Ump signals “play ball.”

  • Auditor

T.R. Sullivan gathered a few hot stove-related nuggets from Rangers general manager Jon Daniels on Tuesday afternoon. Let’s dig in…

    * Daniels thinks there won’t be enough “sellers” by the time the July 31 trade deadline rolls around. “There are just not that many teams decidedly looking to move players,” he said. “There are very few teams that are not within striking distance.”
    * The Texas GM acknowledged that a scout was present for Pedro Martinez’s workout in the Dominican Republic last week, but the 37-year-old right-hander’s contract demands are currently too high.
    * In the end, grabbing a starting pitcher is probably going to be too costly, both in salary and prospects. (Or just salary, if we’re talking about free agent Ben Sheets).
    * “Relief is more realistic,” Daniels concluded.

  • scooper

@obagain: I know that the ump has to grant time out.

  • Evan Grant

@DC: I did see the question, but was hoping it would, um, go away quietly since I don’t have an adequate answer. I think it probably has to do with arm angles and kinisieology (though I have no idea how to spell it properly. I’ll try to get an answer or at least a theory so that if it crosses your mind again, I’ll have something that makes sense.

  • scooper

sorry. I gave the ump 2 left hands. He reached for a new ball with his right hand.

  • becca

oh, i guess teagarden would be starting anyway against padilla.

  • obagain

    Any minor league nuts here?
Now that the allstar game is done, does bianucci get promoted to bakersfield?
What about some of the pitchers like nam?

  • Fred

Evan-3 is a significant losing streak. 4 is when your stopper absolutely has to end it.

  • Tsing Sao

**** If 2010 it’s the ‘year’, why the 2009 version of the Rangers isn’t trying Julio Borbon at CF and leading off? It seems logical to me to try him out and then reestablish a more logical batting oder. Prime example our 2B Ian Kinsler. If you place him batting 5th or 6th he can probably drive RBI a la Jeff Kent’s pace… why? he put’s tons of balls in the air. When you bat leadoff those balls will be out without a meaning, when you bat 5th or 6th those balls could be sac fly’s.

*** His minor league number might suggest that Chris Davis is better than that, I’m afraid if he’s not sending down to AAA tonight he will develop the Richie Sexson/Russ Branyan syndrome (all or nothing… I fear that already happened)

** We need Josh Hamilton more than any other bat out there.

    * Where’s Blalock, Jones, Cruz and Byrd? They’ve done much better than this…

  • DC

Evan thanks i’ve always wondered that just never had the chance to ask anyone.

  • JustSaying

i’m interested to see if jd can pull another reliever out of his hat…..problem is it may be too late………..

  • Fred

Jack Daddy-Trouble with the Baylor stats is that Jennings is .202 life time in ML.

  • DC

Col3 Laa 2 with any luck rangers keep first for one more day.

  • obagain

The may already have a reliever in el duke, a starter if they sign sheets and after the break they should have their hitter in hamilton.
Sprinkle in an aj murry and a feliz and we wont have to do anything.
If you need a part you then do it in the winter when trading is cheaper.

  • Jack Daddy

Fred – I hear you. Scary thing is that’s higher than 1/2 our players’ averages over the last 40 days.

  • DC

    Now he brings in Mathis.

  • JustSaying

    save us vincente save us!

  • obagain

Now mathis is in after it is out of reach?
    I just dont get it.
Any bets on if he finishes the game even if he doesnt allow a run?

  • JustSaying

dbacks announcers really hard on the use of the ash bat and the danger it brings to fans and players…….sounds like a no-brainer? so why are they using these bats still?

  • Jack Daddy

i couldn’t find evidence of a prior case of a run scoring on a throw back to the pitcher but I do seem to recall it.

Speaking of TR – check out his stats on the Rangers futilit. On pace for the worst offensive month in the A.L. since 1981 (or the worst June – unclear from his article).

  • obagain

The players like the bats, until someone is seriously hurt they will continue to use them.
I saw earlier a woman holding her head and being escorted out, hope she is alright.

  • scooper

@evan: I was hoping there would be a players-only meeting yesterday. Surely they are more fed up with this than we are.

  • obagain

Good to see davis lay off the junk and work a walk.

  • scooper

Hmmm…a nine-pitch AB and he flied to left, then a walk! Dare we hope?

  • DC

Jennings threw 34 pitches which means he’s gone for a couple days. Wash makes no sense at times.

  • Fred

Mathis is there to save the rest of the bullpen. Get in some work, if necessary take the punishment. It’s called a mop up man.

  • scooper

@evan: I would really like an answer to this question – doesn’t “time out” have to be called whenever a new ball is put in play?

  • James

I thought bats had typically been made out of Ash and that the Maple bats were the ones that had been investigated.

  • Auditor

  • obagain

It is the maple that are the problem.

  • DC

it is the maple bats that are the problem.

  • AB

    hey evan,
wondering if you saw my comment under your blog regarding marlon byrd swinging for a contract?

  • obagain

    Good night all.

  • Evan Grant

@scooper: If you are still reading, you have an answer, though, somewhat convoluted, in a new blog post. Bottom line: Time was never called and a new ball was never put into play.

@AB: I didn’t see your comment, but I think you may be on to something there, though, having watched Byrd compete, if he’s swinging with less discipline than in the past, it’s not something he is consciously trying to do.

  • scooper

    @evan: thanks!

  • JustSaying

kinsler has to be the guy that leads us out of this offensive drought………
