ARLINGTON - Evan either is dealing with jet lag or still bothered by the man-sized taco in the booth in Arizona. We move ahead without him.
6:55: Following up on what Chris Davis told Evan after Thursday night’s heroics, Ron Washington noted two things this afternoon about Davis: This struggling at the plate is a new experience, and, yes, his fielding has kept him in the lineup.
“Michael Young, Kinsler, Marlon Byrd, Andruw Jones, Hank Blalock – they’ve all struggled before and found a way out of it. Chris has never had to find a way out of it. The thing that has helped him is he hasn’t taken one single at-bat to the field. I know when I was young, I was always told if I can’t get nothin’ done on the offensive part and you come my way, you’re out. That’s what that kid has done.
“What about the play he made [ late in Thursday's game]. I’ve seen that ball end up in the outfield because people try to get out of the way of it. He put himself in position, and when that ball made that bad hop he was in position to catch the ball. He wasn’t in the position of, ‘Oh, Lord. Now I’ve got to try to protect myself.’ ”
Also, Washington said Brandon McCarthy should soft toss over the weekend, the next step toward his return. He’s on the 15-day DL with a stress fracture of his right shoulder, last pitched on June 4 at Yankee Stadium.
7:11: Though the thermometer reads 96, official scorer Steve Weller has announced the game-time temperature as 100. After Kevin Millwood’s last winning start here, he said the weather here is more pleasant than in his native North Carolina. He came into the game with the fifth-best ERA in the AL and a stellar 2.08 here at Rangers Ballpark. But he just gave up Tony Gywnn Jr.’s first career home run in 345 official at-bats.
7:15: Adrian Gonzalez is walking down to first base, a common sight. The former Ranger leads the majors with 60 walks, related to him ranking second in the NL in homers with 24.
7:27: Tony Gywnn Jr. was supposed to start in center, moved to right after Will Venable was scratched. Maybe that threw him, resulting in the E9 that has knotted the score.
7:40: That’s 45 pitches for Millwood through two.
7:46: A big cheer for Chris Davis working a walk out of an at-bat that began with him unable to solve fastballs in the mid- to high 80s and curves in the mid-70s.
7:52: No winners in the Home Run Pool, nor should there have been – anyone picking No. 2 hitter Murphy in the second inning.
7:54: For 30-something rookie Walter Silva, progress comes in small steps. Fifty-one pitches in two innings after throwing 54 in two innings last time out.
8:08: Nifty, twirling stab by Michael Young has gotten Millwood out of the third inning at 68 pitches. He should let everyone except Gonzalez put the ball in play (despite the Gwynn HR). The Padres are last in the majors in runs and tied for last in batting average with the Swingin’ A’s.
8:17: I’ll defend Davis and state that called strike on the outside corner by Jim Wolf (older brother of Dodgers pitcher Randy Wolf) was farther outside than other pitches called as balls.
8:19: Hi ho, Silva, away! Rangers fans might be worried about a stressed bullpen, but the garden variety Padres fans must deal with a team whose three best starters are all on the DL.
8:39: That Blalock OTB homer (over the bullpen) was his first since June 12 against the Dodgers.
8:33: Millwood’s fourth: eight pitches, seven strikes.
8:53: Have to give Young effort points for that force out at third, battling the ball and sticking his glove hand into the base.
9:00: Radio conversation has moved to bad uniforms, prompted by those camo outfits that the Padres wear at home. Of Astros’ rainbow look of the ’80s, Eric says yea and Dave says nay. I also liked those. And you?
9:09: Jason Grilli is warming for the second time. Millwood through six has thrown 113 pitches. This is his 12th quality start of the season, one more than his total for 2008. And he now leads the AL in innings pitched.
9:18: Millwood exits, his home ERA actually rising to 2.21 after allowing two earned runs in six innings.
9:19: Scoreboard watching: The D-Backs left the bases loaded in a scoreless bottom of the first, and the Angels have struck for six in the second and are still batting.
9:27: The Angels ran out of gas after scoring eight in the second.
9:45: German Duran has indeed been signed to a minor league contract after being released from the major league roster this afternoon in the domino of moves that activated Willie Eyre, who has pitched the eighth. Doug Mathis is warming, though Ron Washington said this afternoon he could look to Eyre for two innings.
9:58: As Mathis finishes, Orlando Hernandez pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the RedHawks with two strikeouts and one walk in Oklahoma’s 2-1 win over Round Rock.
Alright Fellas…..let’s jump on these guys and get on a roll.
M I L L W O O D
Let’s do THIS!
New home stretch, new attitude……Ready to see some good baseball tonight.
GO RANGERS!!!
He crushed that but his swing looked so underpowered….crazy. Tony Gwynn Jr? That was the first I have seen him.
Did the Rangers get something for Adrian Gonzales? I forget.
Adam Eaton, and a japanese relief pitcher.
Otska or something like that….
so to answer your question: NO
@td: akinori otsuka. that was the chris young trade. was Gonzalez in that one?
I think it was all one trade yes…..
Otsuka, he was our closer for a year or so.
@scooper, yes Gonzalez was part of that deal, too.
@all: Yes, Gonzalez went with Young Terrmel Sledge for Adam, Aki and C Billy Killian in January 2006.
Young/Gonzalez for Eaton, Otsuka and there was another postion player I think too, and OF.
Hmm, Gonzalez has been a late bloomer, hard to completely judge it bad with hindsight…still, didn’t work out so well for us. Meh, move on
@all: previous comment identified Gonzalez, Young AND Sledge, not implying that Sledge was young at the time.
Wonder if Chris Young’s injury is just a one-time thing, or sign of a deeper problem (to do with his body generally)?
@beerguy: gonzalez was blocked by teixeira at the time.
That trade hurt there for a little while, but both teams still have plenty of room on their respective fingers for some rings.
Yeehaw! Looking good, looking good
@scooper: Yep, that’s true
MY takes a walk thats a good sign.
OK…take it even farther back, who did we trade to get Gonzalez from the Marlins? He was the 1st overall pick.
I could get the HR POOL win with a BYRD HR right here!
@TD: Hmmm, Urbina?? Dunno…
Not soo much…infield hit: I WILL TAKE IT!!
Giving up on a hometown boy who wanted to pitch here (Young) hurt. Gonzalez was just a matter of picking who you wanted at first (Tex) and trading other prospects who weren’t going to play in Arlington. We also traded Carlos Pena while Tex was playing 1B.
@BG: Yeah…think it was UGETH URBINA. LOL.
Nice 1st inning rally…making the pitcher work. Early prediction, this guy will be gone by the 4th….
Didn’t we trade Helling to Florida too at some point?
@Jeff: left-handed batter (Murph). was the ball tailing away from Gwynn?
That was disappointing.
Yes, disappointed.
@scooper: The ball was tailing, but he looked like he jabbed at it. No sun problem in RF.
Millwood better get some control the BP doesn’t have much tonight.
Nice recovery there……MILLWOOD will find his groove.
Good evening everyone. I pray for a quick one tonight b/c I’m so very tired.
good AB for Davis again.
Thank you Chuck Norris….classic.
The Rangers had it right that Young was fragile, and Otsuka was what they needed in the bullpen. They grossly overvaled Eaton, of course, and kindof ignored Gonzalez, thinking Tex would be there forever. Gonzalez was a former overall no. 1 draft choice who just needed some time. I thought at the time the trade was a huge mistake more because of Gonzalez than Young.
I love that move. Thanks Wash.
Ugly bunt, though. Got lucky.
great AB by Davis there
Ok… Why is Kins swinging for the fences on the first pitch in that situation?
Looks like my MLB.com feed is 2 minutes behind live again
HECK YEAH! MURPH!!!
Wow. Nice.
Murphy saves Kins again.
Wow… I’d be willing to bet that is close the longest HR that Murphy has hit in his career.
Finally…a little breathing room in a game.
Finally getting Millwood some run support.
booyah!
This success at the plate just flat out feels good!
Millwood with a 5-run lead. Finally! Now he can just relax and pitch.
He deserves it!
I don’t know much about the Padres, but so far I’d say they are terrible.
@Ryans Dad: Yeah they aren’t very good. Oddly though they had a 9 or 10 game winning streak earlier in the season…
Hey, our boys are doing exactly what they are supposed to. Beat up on the bad teams. And it feels great.
It’s a good thing, too, cause Millwood definitely doesn’t have his best stuff tonight.
Millwood over 60 pitches is not good.
It’s like me with my Driver and putter. The two never seem to do well at the same time.
What. A. Play.
What a play.
Web-gem?
The bats are back!
It’s a route
Whatta catch by MY. Should be a web-gem, scoop! It’s got my vote.
Rack ‘em up boys, pour it on. Score 37! Exorcise those demons.
Let’s not get greedy beer guy, a mere 31 would be nice.
was it just his loping gait, or was Salty limping on the way home?
lol!

I forgot what this looked like.
Rangers almost have as many hits tonight as they had in San Fran.
Hey… Did you guys hear Michael Jackson died?
Puttin the CRUSH on these sorry Padres.
I guess Rudy is a good coach, again.
Until the next slump, Scooper
I will be totally shocked if ALL of the bats again go silent at the same time.
Beavan not having a good night 6 runs and not out of the 4th yet.
Maybe Kevin only goes 5 and Mathis finishes it off.
Beer Guy, that didn’t take long at all did it? Was he that bad here and nobody said anything about it?
@Ryans Dad: yeah, it’s weird…he seemed pretty cool and relaxed here in retrospect. He probably wishes he was back here now!
I just remember what Bradley said after signing w/ the Cubs:
since he has a long-term contract, and the team has shown faith in him, he can play through minor injuries. without a long-term contract, he had to make sure that he was good every time he took the field.
my guess is that Cubs fans are much tougher on him than Rangers fans were.
It’s amazing what financial and professional need can do for a person’s drive and motivation, eh?
Less than 1% of the population are self motivators, it’s true in baseball too i guess.
Seriously, can Knox ask a relevant question besides are u going to six flags? how about tells about UT D and how spring ball went?
GREAT HR HANK
KNOX and RELEVANT QUESTION in the same sentence….Dare to dream Jcouch.
knox should be covering world series of poker with norman chad
how long does millwood go tonight?
Guess everyones fingers are still tired from the record 588 posts last night.
This is the slowest night ever on the board.
we’re winning big; there isn’t a whole lot negative to say.
plus, I guess some people actually have lives (obviously, I am not one of them!)
I hear ya.
No life here.
Nice diving catch by Marlon!
LAA 8-0 in the bottom of the second inning.
everyone except Jeff Mathis scored a run in the 2nd.
Beavan P 4.1 8 9 6 2 2 0 6.48
I guess it is back to the drawing board for Blake man he got lit up tonight
@alan: young pitchers are going to have nights like that.
I know I was just impressed with him the first time I guess my bar got set a little to high but I know he will be alright
It’s always nice to see the guys succeed, especially when they’ve just moved up. It was great to see Holland have success everywhere last year, but that was the exception. I know it is just a rationalization, but it’s not too bad seeing them struggle some and then recover. Nice to see how they respond to adversity.
Wus sup all!!!
We’re kicking butt, that’s what.
I can’t believe that made it through, but c o c k y doesn’t.
I just got back from the Frisco game. Couldn’t stand the defense. Beavan wasn’t as bad as the score indicated. 4 ERRORS!!!! Beasvan lasted into the 6th. He did have a bad 1st with 2 ER’s. SS Osuna was horrible in the field!!!
@scooper: it’s a welcomed site!!!
Ehern was he as good as the first time he pitched or was the defennse that bad
as a retired Army officer i find the padres use of the military camo is an insult of sorts……they haven’t raised their hand to defend their country……….
@alan: He had a good 2,3,4 and 5th inning. 3 errors in the 6th. 8 runs to boot. probably 2 were earned from my point of view.
that first game at home for beavan was just outstanding though. hard game to live up to.
@Jeff: how were they able to sign Duran so soon? I thought he had to clear waivers, first.
gonzales was blocked big time by Teix, showed average contact rate and little to no power. We weren’t the first team to dump him. The Marlin sent him to us in a trade deadline deal. Forgot what we sent, but it wasn’t anything to get excited about.
Young is a below average pitcher, average at best. he has a low 5/high 4 era pitching in the NL (faces a pitcher every night) and pitching in that silly grand canyon of a ball park. He would be getting lit up here. Not sure he is any better than Doug Mathis.
People like to gripe about that trade (dmn bloggers), but hindsight is 20/20.
You also have to analyze what happened when otska (spelling?) left. I think he was a type b. need to see what we got for him.
What DID make the trade ignorant at the time and now was that we centered it around Adam freaking Eaton, who was and is a joke. That is the part that is not excusable. Plus he was in his walk year.
3 games in a row with a great approach at plate. all starts with Kins.
Night all.
