Post Game Show: Padres 7, Rangers 3

Three Up and Three Down from Rangers Ballpark Saturday night:

Three Up
• RHP Doug Mathis should have earned some more trust for doing exactly what a long reliever is supposed to do: He didn’t let a big deficit get any bigger. Mathis went 3.1 innings and allowed three hits; one of them was an infield single and one of them was erased by a double play. Mathis has allowed four hits and two walks over his last four outings, totaling 7.1 innings.
• 1B Chris Davis homered for the second time in a three-game span and is 6-for-11 with three homers in that time.
• Far as I know, there were no reported cases of heat exhaustion.

Three Down
• Rangers officially lost first place after holding at least a share of it for 57 days. The Angels, who come to town Monday, took a half-game lead with a 2-1 win over Arizona.
• LHP Derek Holland came within a hit of tying the Rangers record for most allowed in one game. Holland allowed 13 hits in 5.2 innings. raising his ERA to 6.20. On the heels of his seven-inning, one-run performance against San Francisco, allowing seven runs to the worst-hitting team in the NL was definitely a step back.
• C Jarrod Saltalamacchia has firmly entrenched himself in the AL’s top five in strikeouts. His three punchouts in three at-bats raised his total to 75. There were extenuating circumstances, however, Saturday. Salty was playing in the 100-degree heat for the second straight night because C Taylor Teagarden was scratched due to a stomach virus. On catching 18 innings in 100-degree heat after a 6 a.m. arrival on Friday, Saltalamacchia should be applauded.

I bet the 12 innings of work the night before the two 100 degree days didn’t help Salty much. I would imagine that would be very draining on a catcher.

Any word on Tegarden’s availability for tomorrow?
