5:47: Please, by all means, come and join us at The Pool.
5:49: And now, today’s Jack Daddy Question Of The Day. While it appears things may be settling down a little after Lou Piniella sent Milton Bradley home the other day, it still appears Milton and Chicago have been a bad, bad combination. If you take the contractual situation out of the equation, is there any scenario under which you would be willing to take Bradley back in a trade? Please keep in mind that while Bradley did lead the league in OPS last year, he only played in 46 games after the All-Star break.
7:19: Quick note just to let you know I’m here: Omar Vizquel is donating his jersey from Thursday when he broke the all-time record for hits by a Venezuelan player to the Hall of Fame.
7:31: Not a good inning for Derek Holland. The Padres rank last in the NL in hitting (.235), but rattled off five consecutive hits against him.
7:55: Chris Davis second homer in the last three days comes on another off speed pitch on which he stayed back and let the bat do the work without trying to swing too hard. The ball flew 404 feet to nearly straightaway center.
8:19: Scooper: Blame Jarrod Saltalamacchia for not making you the first back-to-back HR pool winner. Had he reached base ahead of Chris Davis, we were prepared to give you the prize. Unfortunately, you picked a two run homer and Davis went yard solo.
8:25: Oodles of notes up on Hank Blalock’s playing time, Kevin Millwood’s All-Star chances, his fantastic June and other stuff.
8:37: Jeff Miller, monitoring the radio broadcast with a headset that makes him look like he is a U.N. delegate says Eric Nadel reports that the club record for hits allowed by a pitcher is 14. That puts Holland one hit away from etching his name in the Rangers record books since he’s now at 13. He will not get the record. He’s being pulled.
8:30: The record is shared by Oil Can Boyd, who was a little rusty when he allowed Baltimore 14 hits on August 15, 1991. Bobby Witt did it on July 5, 1996. Boyd did it in seven innings; Witt in eight. Holland pitched 5.2 innings tonight. The last Ranger to give up a Baker’s Dozen in the old hit department: Ryan Drese, who turned the trick in 3.2 innings back on August 25, 2004.
8:45: Scooper, monitoring the TV broadcast, mentions that Tom Grieve talks about the second night back after a late return is often worse than the first day. While there is no data to back it up, it’s something Johnny Oates used to say all the time. His thought: Players went on adrenaline for one game, but after gearing up for that one really long, hard day, the crash that followed led to the team being flat for a day or two. Not sure I completely buy it, but I think somewhere along the line – first day, second day, whenever – 6 a.m. returns do catch up with a club.
8:48: I’m afraid we may need some filler for “dead air” tonight. Well, here’s something completely different: The most lovely Gina Miller – a Twitter friend if there ever was one – and I were Tweeting the other night about having a progressive Tex-Mex dinner. In other words we’d go from one restaurant to the next to put together our perfect Tex-Mex meal. So, here’s the question. What separate dishes/drinks would be on your itinerary and where would you go to fill them. I’ll start you off: Mi Cocina for chips and salsa, then Chuy’s for compuesto dip (right MJH?) and then what. … Your turn. Gimme the menu and the stops. In DFW, please. We can’t be running to Austin or Waco (sorry scooper) in one night.
9:03: Lots of TAG comments tonight and you aren’t talking about the men’s bodywash/deodarant. So, here’s the deal: First person to correctly type Tom Grieve’s middle name in the comments section will get a little something from the fine folks at Dr Pepper.
9:14: We bring you this note courtesy of the Rangers fast-researching PR department: According to baseball-reference.com, Derek Holland is the only pitcher in the past 56 seasons (1954-2009) with at least 13 hits allowed and at least 8 strikeouts in an outing of 6.0 innings or less…only 2 pitchers this decade had totaled 13-or-more hits and 8-or-more strikeouts in an outing of any length, last Giants’ Matt Morris (7.0 IP, 13 H, 8 SO) on 7/29/07 vs. FLA and also Diamondbacks’ Curt Schilling (7.0 IP, 13 H, 12 SO) on 4/25/01 vs. FLA…oddly enough, the last 2 American League pitchers with 13-or-more hits and 8-or-more K’s in a game were both Rangers…Bobby Witt did it on July 5, 1996 vs. Seattle (8.0 IP, 14 H, 8 SO) and Kevin Brown did it April 14, 1994 vs. Milwaukee (7.0 IP, 13 H, 8 SO), which means the last 3 instances of this strange pitching line combination have come at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
9:27: I thought Neftali Feliz would pitch for Oklahoma City tonight, but he didn’t. Guess he’s just getting a couple of days off between outings there.
If they’d eat a significant portion of the salary, I wouldn’t mind having him back; probably would be better than hank.
NO WAY, no scenario we should take Bradley back via trade or any other mechanics of acquisition. He needed a contract last year and behaved (mostly). He played well when he played which was not nearly enough. Speculation is that he lost clubhouse support with his post-All Star break lack of playing time.
We dodged the bullet with him once. Move on!
No, No, No, No, Never, Never, Never, Never, No, NEVER!!!
NO. Dodged a bullet last year, don’t press your luck.
No, he admitted he didn’t always give full effort last year bc of his contractual situation. We don’t need that type of attitude now. We need players who are willing to play everyday 100%.
No way! True colors are showing thru again. How many teams does he have to go through before we are sure he is a T.O. Type. Million dollar talant and a 5 cent head……..
If contract was no issue? Yes, I can see a trade I would do for him. Say, Andruw Jones for Milton Bradley and the Cubs top prospect. I’d do that.
Great first inning for Holland!
Wow maybe best stuff Holland has had.
Young is clearly frustrated. If he keeps reacting like that after every at bad….I’m worried.
Cubs take Jones and Blalock pay 80% of Bradleys contract and send best pitching prospect.
Holland has got to learn to mix his pitches.
Just FYI, this was reported earlier today:
The Rangers were the favorite to sign Sheets when the ’09 season began, but have said recently that they’re not likely to add payroll for an elite starter. The 30-year-old began performing range-of-motion exercises in mid-June and hopes to be game-ready by August. Even if he’s not healthy until September, you can bet contending teams will make a run at the four-time All-Star.
Correct me if I’m wrong..but the pitcher calls the pitches. (yes, I know the pitcher can shake them off) So why is Salty calling for all fastballs?
I blame this second inning on salty and the coaches.. u have to call a better game
So much for good stuff.
All salty has to do is go out and tell him they are sitting on the fastball and he has to change up some or he wont finish the 4th.
Holland is learning, that’s part of the process
Blalock swinging at ball 4.
You must be crazy to trade Andruw, he is the heart and soul (after the starting
of this team!!
Do you really want trouble with a capital T back?
Uncharacteristic Elvis plays and the other rookie (D-Hol) picks him up. Good to see.
As I said a couple of weeks ago, I wish the had a veteran catcher to work with Holland. He and Salty are both kids trying to figure it out.
Sorry, jones is not the heart and soul of this team.
He is expendable for the right offer.
Crush strikes again!
Crush is back.
Fred, that is why wash should be really watching what he calls from the dugout.
That is also why I would like to sea Teagarden catch Holland.
Theres no way jones is heart and soul of this team.
They said Teagarden was going to play but is sick.
Elvis will make a bunch of errors. He’s a kid and he had 18 in the minors last year. He has 12 now, I think, so he’s on a pace to get there again. However, he also makes plays you rarely see. Like the last one where he didn’t get the out, but stopped the ball. He ill be a great one. He’s learning his craft, but he has amazing ability.
oh yes take back bradley straight up for blalock……..
I assume all the folks who wanted to bring Smoak up and banish Davis are here. Hope Smoke starts hitting lefties a bit better, and they can find a place for both of them next year, or the year after. Nice to see davis make some adjustments. You could see it coming last weekend.
The only way I want bradley back is if we trade hank or jones and we also receive 3 high value prospects also.
Speaking of jerseys……..
@evan where is the Kason Gabbard jersey? still say this is a great jersey for a fund raiser……….a piece of history……
I dont know why teams dont auction off more jerseys and stuff.
With the economy down I am sure they could make a small fortune each year doing that.
Yeah, we should have auctions to raise money to make necessary trades!
or signings for that matter.
Salty’s not having a very good night behind the plate, either.
Young is not a good 3rd baseman reactions are to slow.
Young has to get that, he just didnt get his glove down.
As much as it looked like the offense was coming around this game may set them back.
@evan: can’t win ‘em all! and I’ll forgive Salty.
8:25: Oodles of notes up on Hank Blalock’s playing time, Kevin Millwood’s All-Star chances, his fantastic June and other stuff.
http://insidecorner.dmagazine.com/index.php/2009/06/27/rangers-notes-hank-blalock-believes-he-is-still-an-everyday-player-and-more/
@Rangers Fan: I can organize a bake sale, get the cookie lady involved, should pull in a cool couple hundred bucks.
That inning was pathetic.
@Evan: yes, I’ll head up the committee.
The team is flat. Everyone is having an off night. Can we chalk it up to the late nights catching up to them? Or is that being overly positive?
@evan: thank you for the clarification on German Duran.
TAG was saying last night that players have told him that the second night back is worse than the first after a road trip (and getting in early a.m.).
Who knows? That might be why Wash pulled him.
@scooper…that’s what got me thinking. Let’s hope for that.
On Holland…well 8 strikeouts is definitely a positive. I’m still high on Holland. I think he will be great. He’s young. None of this is surprising in my opinion.
At an engaement party and stole an iPhone so I only have a moment… But no on braley, why are u guys letting the padres win, and p.s.it’s hot outside.
TAG is right about Holland’s problem tonight: command. He threw a lot of strikes, but not a lot of good pitcher’s strikes. He will learn and he will be OK.
@evan: I do buy the second night back theory. Everyone is different, but I could usually ramp it up for that one tough game. You were really tired, but you knew you had to do it. However, it always catches up with you at some point.
@evan: nothing in particular I’d recommend in Waco, anyway. Austin – that would be worth a trip all by itself.
I’ll start you off: Mi Cocina for chips and salsa, then Chuy’s for compuesto dip (right MJH?) and then what. … Your turn. Gimme the menu and the stops. In DFW, please. We can’t be running to Austin or Waco (sorry scooper) in one night.
No one’s saying much about the hank comments but they sure rub me the wrong way. He’s not an everyday player. Numbers sure aren’t making a case for him to be in there. He’s not great defensively and not lighting up the park so…what’s his beef? I’ve wanted him out all year…this only makes me want it to be now.
Sorry, Evan, I have nothing to contribute on this one. I don’t know the restaurants in the DFW area.
I’d go to Uncle Julio’s for chips and salsa/queso and Mi Cocina for the fajitas (well done onions of course!)
@rangersfan: You know that Hank thinks he would be hitting better if he played every day (and he might be right), but it is not going to happen with the Rangers. If he had become the hitter we all thought he would be (driving the ball to all fields), he might still have had a future here. If there is any trade out there for Hank (and I’m not at all sure there is), I’m pretty sure the Rangers would take it.
@evan: your opinion – is it our bats or Correia’s pitching?
Thomas Allan Grieve (but I’m not sure I spelled his middle name the way he does),
Alan
Luna’s for a chimichanga. I visit every time I am in Dallas to see the grandchild!
The thing I miss most about living away from TX is access to Tex-Mex. The Mexican Town area of Detroit has a half dozen places to eat, but they just don’t measure up!
Savor every bite…..
@scooper: you’re probably right. It just erks me to hear him say that. He’s never lived up to his hype. He swings for the fences every single time. Never met the guy..but he doesn’t seem to have made any connection with the fans. Hank’s hommies were here early..but he’s not ever been accessible and in all these years I have never seen him sign one autograph during batting practice or any time. He just doesn’t go with the Rangers, in my opinion.
@rangersfan: I agree with you, you just can’t expect him to say anything else. He will have to find a new team next year.
@Ryan C: You are a winner my friend. Sorry, scoop. Said you gotta correctly type his name. I was thinking there would be an Allen or two.
Ryan, you’ll need to email me, my friend.
Got to nominate Gloria’s for either 1) black bean deep, 2) the fajitas, or 3) the skirt steak (Arrachera Asada).
And yes I know they are El Salvadorian food… but more tex mex than not…
Starting the second inning, the Padres did what you need to do against Holland right now. They knew he was going to throw strikes and fastballs – look for the fastball and hit the first good one you get. If his command had been better, they probably wouldn’t have had as many hits. And TAG pointed out that there were a lot of grounders which happened to find holes (they could have just as easily been right at an infielder). We’ll see how his next start goes and what he learns from this. That’s the point – this is a learning process.
@scooper: Correia was really sharp 10 days ago against Seattle, going a career-long eight innings and allowing just two baserunners (both solo homers). At the very least, there’s got to be something to the unfamiliarity most of these hitters have with him. As usual, I’d say it’s a combination of the two.
Enchiladas – Las Pericas on Northside Dr. in FW.
Puffy tacos – Caro’s near TCU
Chips and salsa – The Original on Camp Bowie
Hello SportsCenter!
that’s gotta be a web-gem!
Does anyone think we have a shot at 4 in the 9th?
@rangersfan: why not?
Good…as rough as the offense has been this month. We all know they still have the talent. Haven’t had a comeback of this caliber in a while…
It begins!
Well if Marlon is gonna swing at those high fastballs all day…not gonna happen.
That was NOT a good at-bat by Marlon.
Time for Byrd to go back to 4th outfielder.
and it ends … bummer
and Hank’s was just as bad.
Oh Hank…how you beat me.
I’m gonna focus on the 8 strikeouts and another Davis HR. Oh and Young getting 2 hits…we need him back.
NO to Bradley. The next outfielder that should be added to the team is Bourbon….
