Road To Arlington: Rangers Minor League Report (6/28)

Triple-A: @ New Orleans 11, Oklahoma City 5

The RedHawks’ six-game winning streak ended as the Zephyrs jumped on starter RHP Bryan Corey (3-3; 6.42) for 11 runs on 13 hits, including three that left the yard.

CF Julio Borbon (.300 / .366 / .380) reached base four times on a triple, a walk and two HBPs, scoring twice while SS Joaquin Arias (.261 / .289 / .299) remained red hot, going 2-for-5 with a double to drive in three. Arias is hitting .452 over his last ten games and has assembled seven multi-hit performances during that span. RF Greg Golson (.279 / .332 / .380) went 2-for-5 with a double.

LHP Mike Hinckley (2.33 ERA) delivered yet another solid performance, blanking New Orleans on two hits and no walks, fanning one over the final 3.1 frames.

Double-A: @ Frisco 9, Corpus Christi 3

LF Tim Smith (.360 / .385 / .461) drove in five runs in a 3-for-5 outing that included a three-run shot while RF Mitch Moreland (.331 / .372 / .472) went 4-for-4 with a walk to drive in one and score three times as the Riders tripled-up the Hooks.

LHP Mike Ballard (2-4; 4.86) scrambled his way to a quality start, limiting Corpus Christi to three runs on six hits, including two homers in six innings. The University of Virginia alum walked three and fanned four before giving way to RHP Beau Vaughan who allowed one hit in two scoreless innings of work.

1B Justin Smoak (.331 / .450 / .491) went 2-for-4 with a walk and 3B Johnny Whittleman (.223 / .349 / .307) went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk to drive in one. Whittleman ranks fourth in the Texas League with 42 freebies and he’s fanned just 45 times.

Advanced-A: @ High Desert 16, Bakersfield 8

The two Cal League All-Stars delivered, but nobody else did. 2B Matt Lawson (.292 / .340 / .423) doubled twice in four trips from the bottom of the order and DH Mauro Gomez (.262 / .315 / .492) belted his 11th home run of the year in a 2-for-4 outing.

Ryan Falcon, John Slusarz, Adalberto Flores and Hector Nelo divided duties on the mound and none posted a line worth mentioning.

Class-A: Kannapolis 8 @ Hickory 7

The Intimidators got to Hickory starter RHP Joe Wieland (3.46 ERA) for four runs on ten hits in 4.1 innings of work, but the silver lining is that while Wieland walked four in as many frames in his last outing, he did not issue a free pass yesterday. He also fanned five.

Gritty, gutty 2B Michael Hollander (.280 / .336 / .336) went 3-for-4 with a double and a sacrifive. SS Leury Garcia (.276 / .319 / .324) went 0-1, drew a walk, was hit by a pitch, stole a bag and scored twice from the bottom of the order.

RHP Fabio Castillo (1-3; 2.22) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on four hits and a pair of walks in 3.1 innings of relief.

Short Season-A: @ Everett 6, Spokane 3

Spokane starter RHP Ben Henry (3.12 ERA) gave up a pair of runs on five hits and a walk, punching out eight through the first 3.2 innings before giving way to RHP Johnny Gunter (2.08 ERA) who dealt 2.1 scoreless innings, walking two and fanning two without allowing a hit. RHP Reineir Bermudez (0-1; 7.20) suffered the loss by surrendering four runs on six hits and a walk over the final two frames.

CF Cody Podraza (.345 / .406 / .483) went 2-for-4 with a walk from the top of the order, giving Spokane their only multi-hit performance.

Rookie: @ Rangers 7, Padres 4 (Suspended 5th)

Another power outage. Both Bakersfield and the big club have already had games suspended or delayed because of power outages this year.

Prior to the lights going out, the little Rangers saw RHP Omar Poveda deal three scoreless frames on two hits and no walks, fanning two in a rehab appearance.

C Tomas Telis (.292 / .308 / .333) drove in three runs with a single and a sac fly in three trips.
