5:31: It’s cool at the homer pool.

5:49: The Rangers aren’t the only AL West team experiencing their share of issues right now. Seattle’s Adrian Beltre is going to have shoulder surgery this week and will be out of the lineup for four to eight weeks.

Is Nolan Ryan stealing a page from Chik-Fil-A's "Eat More Chikin" campaign by having an oinker pitch his beef?

Is Nolan Ryan stealing a page from Chik-Fil-A's "Eat More Chikin" campaign by having an oinker pitch his beef?

5:53: I spent the early part of the afternoon here, scarfing up free samples of food, petting a cow and searching for Herschel Walker (alas, I missed him). But I did run by the Nolan Ryan Beef stand hoping to find Ryan at the grill. I found a delicious sample of his ribeye, some nice folks and a case full of beef. Hey, Nolan, how do I look as a pitch man?

6:30: Josh Hamilton has been cleared to begin a rehab assignment Monday. He’ll DH for Frisco, take a day off (because Frisco begins its All-Star break) and then, providing there are no setbacks, will go to Triple-A Oklahoma City to continue the rehab assignment. GM Jon Daniels said it’s possible Hamilton could return sometime during the Tampa Bay series, but not for the first game on Friday.

7:14: So, the Angels come into Arlington riding a five-game win streak courtesy of a sweep of Arizona. The Angels won 12-8 Sunday, nearly blowing a lead of six runs. Arizona cut a 9-3 lead to 9-8 before allowing homers in the eighth and ninth innings. The last one, a two-run blast by Maicer Izturis created the final margin. Of significance to the Rangers: The Angels bullpen, which has been uncharacteristically weak, had to work four innings Sunday. If the Rangers can get to starter Sean O’Sullivan early Monday and force the bullpen to work hard again, it might just set up the series in a very favorable manner.

7:27: Honey bunches of notes here. We talk about the absence of Nelson Cruz, the progress of Doug Mathis and more.

7:32: Chris Davis will bat third in the bottom of the second. One thing that’s gone kind of unnoticed in his recent hot streak: He’s primarily batted eighth. He’s done it four times in the last 10 days and five times since June 11. Since sliding him to eighth was my big proposed tweak of the lineup – and because I’m completely self-involved – I will point out that he’s 7-for-16 (.438) in those games.

7:36: Chris Davis’ spot in the Cal League record books – he had a 35-game hitting streak for Bakersfield in 2007 – has been erased. High Desert’s James McOwen extended his streak to 36 games on Sunday.

7:39: Tonight is Davis’ 151st major league game, which is about what you would expect from a first baseman over a healthy, full season. His numbers to this very moment (including the second-inning strikeout): .252 batting average, 32 homers, 86 RBIs, a .304 OBP, .503 slugging percentage and 196 strikeouts.

7:54: Because we could all use a laugh, I present the picture to your right. This was also from the FoodService Expo today. Submit your best caption and if I deem it worthy, we’ll find something for you to win.

8:08: Chad Gaudin just crossed 40 pitches – with two outs in the fourth.

8:29: In response to the ongoing Chris Davis argument, I thought I’d throw a few numbers out there. Just looked up the average first base performance for the AL over the last four seasons. Here is what I found (batting average/OBP/slugging):

• 2008: The average first baseman hit .266/.346/.447 with 24 homers
• 2007: The average first baseman hit .267/.348/.443 with 22 homers
• 2006: The average first baseman hit .280/.352/.467 with 25 homers
• 2005: The average first baseman hit .271/.343/.458 with 26 homers

So based on that Davis would be an above average slugger and a below average hitter. Factor in his above average defense and you still have a pretty close to average major leaguer at age 23. Don’t think I’m willing at this point to say he is what he is. There is some serious growth that he’ll have to do, but I don’t think at this point it’s really been determined what he is.

8:50: Anyway you slice it, Tommy Hunter will qualify for a quality start here. By me, that’s good enough to keep him in the rotation for the next time the Rangers need a fifth starter, which is July 7. Your other choices: Go back to Doug Mathis, call up Guillermo Moscoso or Luis Mendoza.

8:58: Since May 1, Andruw Jones is now hitting .208 (that’s including his 0-for-3 tonight), lowest among all Rangers with at least 100 plate appearances.

9:01: C.J. Wilson is pitching the eighth here, so I suppose if the Rangers were to rally in the bottom of the inning, the ninth would once again belong to Frank Francisco.

9:11: Chad Gaudin is hurling a one-hitter. OK, so, here’s a little background. Gaudin befuddled the Rangers in his first two career starts against them, allowing one earned run in 12.2 innings. But the club made an adjustment and has absolutely pounded him since. He’s 1-3 in his last five starts against Texas, dating back to July, 2007. He’s allowed a .378 batting average to the Rangers and compiled an 8.78 ERA. There will most assuredly be questions for guys like Young (12-for-24 coming in) and Blalock (7-for-8). Young had a first inning single. Since then, nothing.

9:14: OK, that’s a terrible at-bat by Elvis Andrus. A rookie ninth-place hitter should not be first-pitch swinging with the club down two runs in the eighth. The Rangers need baserunners. The old saying: “A walk is as good as hit” is not true in that situation. A walk is better than a hit. Works pitcher a tad harder, potentially gets hitter a better pitch to hit. It’s not the first time Andrus has done that down by multiple runs late in a game. It’s something he’s got to work on.

9:21: After they lost the series opener at Arizona to extend the losing streak to five games, I thought a team meeting might be coming, but they held off. Once again, I’ll suggest one may be in the offing if they get one-hit by Chad Flippin’ Gaudin with the first-place Angels coming to town. Might be tonight, might be tomorrow afternoon, but I smell one. And the only reason the Rangers wouldn’t is just to not give off any scent to the Angels that they are panicking.

9:35: Michael Young takes walk with one out in ninth. This is what Elvis Andrus should have worked toward in order to bring tying run to the plate. It’s there now in form of Andruw Jones.

9:36: And now it’s not. Ground ball double play ends game. Jones is 0-for-4, hitting .206 since May 1. Yeah, it’s a bad loss.

    Nellie sitting again?

  • Patrick A

Doesn’t Chad Gaudin have a nappy beard/goatee thingy?

  • TD

So Evan, what would be our equivalent of what the Cardinals gave up for DeRosa?

  • Evan Grant

@TD: Kind of hard to equate, because I’ve been asking the same question much of the day. Chris Perez was an upper-level closer-type pitcher. I’m not sure the Rangers had that kind of pitcher in their system. Maybe you could say Neftali Feliz since he’s now in the bullpen, but that would be undervaluing Feliz. Think there wasn’t a real match based on what the Indian were looking for.

  • TD

That’s what I thought, when I first heard it I thought he went cheap, but I guess it’s a fair trade since he is most likely a rental and there is the “player to be named later”, in a perfect world he would have been a great piece to add here, but not at the risk of messing with or changing our philosophy…in my opinion.

  • Rangers Fan

Is it really ever necessary to have dogs at the ballpark?

Is Tegarden still sick? We are running Salty ragged.

  • TD

    And where’s NELLIE?

  • becca

tummy dropped a bit seeing adruw in right.

  • Rangers Fan

Is Blalock still capable of playing 3rd? If so, if word comes down Lowell is out for any amount of time is there a chance talks with Boston come alive again?

  • Evan Grant

@Rangers Fan: Dogs are always welcome at my park. Teagarden feeling better, but after some vomiting yesterday (hey, you asked), think the Rangers want to make sure he’s hydrated again before sending him to mound. He’ll almost certainly catch Vicente Padilla on Monday.

  • becca

and i don’t understand hank playing either. i know he thinks he should play everyday. but he didn’t ask me. but that’s ok.

  • TD

    Poor dogs….it’s too hot!

  • DC

Teagarden needs to catch padilla and holland.

  • AJM

    What TD and James asked.

  • becca

jim knox doesn’t seem to have his normal ‘umph’ tonight. maybe the heat got to him as well. say it ain’t so! if knoxy is too hot, then surely it’s too rough for the pups out there!

  • Rangers Fan

Hank is not an everyday player. I don’t care what he says.

  • Evan Grant

7:27: Honey bunches of notes up. We talk about the absence of Nelson Cruz, the progress of Doug Mathis and more.

    http://insidecorner.dmagazine.com/index.php/2009/06/28/texas-rangers-notes-nelson-cruz-gets-third-day-off-in-five-games-is-mathis-earning-more-trust/

  • TD

    Sweet notes…thanks.

  • becca

haven’t gone there yet, but do the notes include any insights on billy mays’ death? it’s been a hard week of death this week.

  • TD

Here is another note: Chris Davis has 2 more HR’s and 9 less RBI’s than Mark DeRosa. Don’t know what that means, but just realized it.

  • Rangers Fan

I’d get DeRosa’s OBP is highter..but I’m still happy with Davis. We are more than Mark DeRosa away, in my opinion.

  • Mike E

Do you think they have to buy an extra ticket for the dog?

  • The Beer Guy

Teagarden didn’t seem to find Vinny’s joke about the umpire very funny there hehe

  • DC

Kinsler needs to be more patient.

  • TD

    Yeah, KNOXY is STRUG-A-LING.

Think he needs a day off too…..

  • DC

Knox gets all road games off.He needs to suck it up and fight thru it.

  • Evan Grant

@All: We are going to get Jim Knox on this blog. Some how, some way, we are going to get the man here.

  • becca

@evan: you will be my hero if you make that happen.

  • TD

Tell him there are some dogs here to be interviewed, that will get him right over ;)

  • Declan

CD’s full-season numbers– bleh. I’ve convinced myself not to get too hung up on him: he plays nice D and is unlikely to be here more than another season. Our ready-made replacement for him is, well, ready.

  • Little O

@Evan-I hope for the sake of Knox that he doesn’t :)

  • Evan Grant

@Little O: You have to give the man credit; he is an exceptionally good sport about the very cheesy job he has, which is essentially asking this: “Hey, where you from?” “OK, now yell for us!”

  • Adiosmofo

Reason #137 why I could not be in major league management- if I were, Borbon would be batting lead off and Kinsler 5th on my lineup card.

Sure seems logical, but I must be missing something.

  • Adiosmofo

Caption: Evan finally scores a date.

  • DC

A Gonzalez has more june walks then all the rangers but kinsler have for the year.

  • becca

if steak asked me out, i’d say yes.

  • Declan

Evan grabs life by the horns.

  • TD

@DECLAN: I bet Justin Smoak will never strike out either!

  • Little O

@Evan- I give him a lot of credit – I sure wouldn’t want that job.

    How about getting Eric?

  • Declan

@TD: he will, just unlikely on a major-league record pace…or even 196 over 151 games.

  • Rangers Fan

I’m all about Justin Smoak but is he really ready for the majors. He’s been hurt and if I remember correctly he was not going crazy in AA. I think he definitely needs to get some AAA time first.

  • Evan Grant

@Little O: You want Eric? For what a chat?

  • TD

@DECLAN: Unlikely, but you can’t rule it out. I feel your pain, but there are no guarantees for any of these young guys. Tonight, Hunter is out-pitching the greatest prospect in the world (HOLLAND)…..

  • Little O

Caption- I found the head, where’s the angus?

  • Rangers Fan

I’ve had it with Jones and Blalock.

  • Bob

@TD: Davis’ full-season body of work, as objectively presented by Evan– an OPS just abover .800 and almost 200 K’s.

Neither is good for a major league 1B. We now have enough data on him to reasonably suggest that he’s reaching “he is what he is” territory.

You bet the Rangers are brass are expecting more from Smoak.

  • Little O

@Evan-yep, during the road trip to Anaheim

  • Declan

    ATD: “…you can’t rule it out…”

No kidding. That is not a relevant point.

BTW, your Hunter vs Holland red herring– we’re discussing season-long performance, not single games.

  • TD

I won’t get into ANOTHER full blown DAVIS argument on here again, LOL…emphasis on AGAIN, but 32 HR’s and 86 RBI’s ain’t bad…

An out is an out…..strikeout, groundout, flyout, foulout….it’s an OUT. Not every flyout is a sacrifice, etc. so don’t give me that one either.

Not bad production for a bottom of the order guy with great defense.

    Just my opinion…

  • TD

    @DECLAN:
he will, just unlikely on a major-league record pace

    TOUCHE

  • Mike E

Is the a special price for hot dogs on dog night?

  • Adiosmofo

If the Rangers have the line-up in the future that allows them to keep CD in the 8 hole with decent power numbers and plus defense, then great.

The problem with the lineup is when you have players like Salty, AJ, Blalock, even Kinsler– low-ish OPS and plenty of Ks– along side CD. Productionb over time will suffer. We’ve seen it.

@TD- a K, where the ball is not at all put in play, is in fact different than a groundout, flyout, or foulout.

  • DC

    Pathetic hitting tonight.

  • DC

Would rather have CD in lineup than AJ or Hank any day.

  • TD

I would like to see the percentages of outs that are sacrifices, in one season for example…just out of curiosity.

  • DC

Least with CD you know he will get better. He did have a 35 game hit streak in minors.

  • DC

    Very good start by Hunter.

  • Rangers Fan

Oh dear goodness….are we having yet another Chris Davis debate? Is there anything else to say?? And am I ridiculous in thinking an 80& OBP is good? Even if you don’t like Davis, surely you can see there are no other options, right?

  • TD

This will be the WORST series loss of the year so far, in my opinion, if we don’t find a way to win this game…..dang.

  • Little O

Just flipped over to the Frisco game- is the attendance usually that bad or is it just like that when the Rangers are home?

  • Rangers Fan

ok, my bad…read a post wrong.

  • Little O

Very reasonable view of Davis there Evan

  • becca

i hate losing, but if we do, i think it will have something to do with both jones and hank being in the lineup at the same time. i get giving cruz a day or two off. but i’d rather almost anyone else batting than those guys. but that’s just me.

  • TD

    @Rangers Fan: You’re still right…..

  • Ehren

Evening all! sorry i’m late tonight!

  • Rangers Fan

I am so tired of Jones and Blalock. They are as good as they’re getting. There’s no upside. And now Hank’s complaining. He should be sat on the bench and not let up.

  • DC

    Feliz 1 2/3 inning 44 pitches 1 hit 1 walk 1 strikeout.

  • Ehren

    Nadel is having more surgery?!?!?!

  • becca

    great job, tommy. good outing.

  • Ehren

With Jennings come in, i guess the guy on 1st will score now.

  • Rangers Fan

@Ehren…I was jsut about to say that myself.

  • Brent

Caption: Bessie. She’s what’s for dinner.

  • Evan Grant

    @Brent: Sorry, that’s Elsie.

  • Ehren

Keep with Hunter for the 5th spot!

  • becca

@evan: i think for sure hunter should get another chance next time a starter is needed, even though i’d normally lean toward moscoso simply based on facial hair awesomeness. but i’d say tommy earned another chance.

  • TD

    WILL WORK FOR RUNS.

  • Ehren

TD: You better get started with the work cause you’ll be working for a long time.

  • AJM

“Davis’ full-season body of work, as objectively presented by Evan– an OPS just abover .800 and almost 200 K’s.

Neither is good for a major league 1B. We now have enough data on him to reasonably suggest that he’s reaching “he is what he is” territory.”

You want to know why teams don’t want to rebuild, why Tom Hicks fought rebuilding so long and hard, why Drayton McLane still tries to put it off?

Because of attitudes like the one expressed above.

Chris Davis turned 23 a month before the season started. About half of the full season’s of ABs in the majors that we were talking about were put up when he was the same age Justin Smoak is now.

Chris Davis is still a young player, and yet, just 90 days removed from his 23rd birthday, we have people proclaiming that “he is what he is” and already wanting to move on to the next shiny bauble in the minor league system.

If a prospect doesn’t come up and immediately dominate, fans are ready to write him off. And if a prospect does come up and immediately dominate — like Davis did — but then struggles, well, fans decide the league has figured him out and are ready to write him off.

  • DC

I agree with Hank he should play every day on some other team.

  • becca

haha. i like the way this dc cat thinks.

  • TD

    @DC: Haha….great point.

@AJM: AMEN BROTHER! Tell it like it is!

  • Fred

@Evan- I’m an old man, but an old baseball man (coach/player). I appreciate that you bring some reality to the youngsters. This is a building year. I tip my hat to Hunter (and I’m a black belt, 70 lbs lighter than he, who used to teach judo).

  • Ehren

Did they get rid of the diamond club tonight because all the balls are dying at the warning track!

  • DC

With the mindset of half these people seattle should have got rid of King Felix long ago cause he wasn’t good the first few years.

  • ernie

why would the rangers not keep hunter here now, pitch him in turn on saturday, or on sunday then they would have feldman instead of hunter in the series at anaheim?

  • TD

A one hitter from Chad Gaudin….REALLY. Not laughing or feeling good anymore. This WILL be the worst series loss…CRAP.

Ok…going to try and keep the faith here….

  • Rangers Fan

@AJM: Very well said. I wonder what will happen when Smoak comes up and struggles…The sky will be falling I’m sure.

  • becca

if cj’s pitching now, does that mean frankie would be in for the 9th if there’s a save chance? or would the guitar hero stick it out?

  • becca

oh nevermind. evan did the answering before/same time-ish that i asked.

  • DC

Or to put it in ranger terms trying to hurry and get better is why Danks threw a shutout for CWS today instead of for rangers.

  • Jonathan

Jones, Blalock, and Byrd should not bat in a row again. Frankly, I would be happy to never see another at bat from Jones or Blalock. Sheesh.

  • Evan Grant

@All: I periodically like to remind about how great it is for everyone to have opinions and how great you are for expressing them in a most civilized manner.

Right now, Davis is somewhere along where Carlos Pena was after his first 150 games (.238/.318/.445, 23 HR, 67 RBI, 139 Ks). Pena eventually developed into a significant power threat and a steady everyday first baseman. But it took longer than any one team was willing to give. Will Davis be another Pena? Or will he make the adjustment and be a guy like Ryan Howard? It can’t be determined at age 23.

  • becca

remember back during spring training when there were whispers of the yankees sniffing around blalock? i felt so sure that was going to happen….man, the good old days.

  • Evan Grant

@Ernie: You make excellent points. The 7th is the first time the Rangers would absolutely NEED a fifth starter if they wanted to push everybody back as far as possible due to Thursday’s off day, but because of that off day they can re-arrange the rotation anyway they want. They’ve got Padilla, Feldman and Millwood going against the Angels this week. I’m sure they’d like to set it up so as many of those guys as possible would pitch against the Angels in Anaheim, too.

  • TD

EVAN: Do you have ANY IDEA of what the percentage of an average players outs are for sacrifices over the course of a season? Just out of curiosity….even a rough percentage or your astute opinion would be nice.

    and great point on Pena….

  • Rangers Fan

@Evan: In regards to the Jones entry…so Jones is hitting less than Davis but people still call for him to start over Davis? Please explain that rational.

  • Jonathan

It’s a good time to point out how good CJ has been this year. The guy has sick stuff, and it seems he has got his act together. I no longer get all white knuckled when he comes in.

  • Ehren

i just heard the air deflate from the stadium…

  • TD

CJ is the man right now for sure…..

  • Rangers Fan

Yes…CJ has been lights out. Right now, I feel more comfortable with him in there than Frankie.

  • Ehren

@Rangers Fan: Unfortunately, there is no rational with player moves.

  • Ehren

    WOW!

  • TD

    yeah………..

  • Rangers Fan

I want to see someone go crazy. Take a bat to the gatorade jug. Throw things. I don’t care. Shake something up!

  • DC

Guess the team slump is not over yet.

  • Evan Grant

@TD: Can’t get to the average right now, but can tell you the Mariners lead the AL in sac bunts/flies. And 3.06 percent of their outs have come on sacrifices (57 of 1,860). Not sure what that means. By the way, the Rangers are not last in the AL with their 39 sac bunts/flies. That belongs to Baltimore with 27. And there are four other teams with fewer sac bunts/flies than the Rangers.

  • DC

Watching jones in field reminds me of manny no real effort given.

  • TD

    @EVAN: Thanks.

  • TD

Watching Jones in the field reminds me of an over 40 beer league.

  • tomckil

I like Davis, but I seem to remember he’s a Boras guy, so when the light comes on and he’s tearing it up, it’ll all be about “testing the FA market”.

  • DC

    So is Smoak.

  • Ehren

Ecks really chokes up on that bat.

  • Rangers Fan

@tomckil: Well that is still a ways away…who is Smoaks agent?

  • DC

    Smoak = boras the antichrist.

  • Rangers Fan

well..we better get get the most out of them for 6 years.

  • Ehren

DC, you better stop. you’re giving the antichrist a bad name by linking him with boras.

  • DC

@ Ehren your right i’m sorry.

  • DC

Way to go MY to bad 2 strikeouts are coming next.

  • becca

i wonder if the pressure ever gets to young. he seems like the only guy in the line up that you feel ok with when he’s up. but even lately, he hasn’t been necessarily a sure thing. being a team leader and all that, i just bet it gets frustrating for him when he can’t produce. or is always expected to.

then again, that’s kinda his job. aw heck. i don’t know what i’m talking about. i’m just happy my job is in an office where i play with stats and spreadsheets. this baseball thing is a lot of pressure.

  • TD

    TERRIBLE.

  • Rangers Fan

THAT’S IT! IVE HAD IT! GET JONES OUT!

  • TD

We could end this week in 3rd place, easily!

  • Ehren

    this series was deflating!

  • DC

Jones should be released and Borbon brought up. Almost forgot send Hank with him.

  • TD

    Yes, release Jones…..

  • becca

well, um, we can at least say at least it was a quick game!

  • Jonathan

It’s bad enough to watch Jones play right now, but then he’s in the cleanup spot. I’m liking what Borbon is doing at AAA. Right now, I’d rather watch him struggle and learn in the majors then watch Jones suck it up.

I was going to say that Jones had become Sosa from 07, but frankly that would be a lot more palatable than what we are getting now.

  • DC

    True Becca but a loss.

  • DC

Sosa had more than jones does.

  • Rangers Fan

In all honesty, do we think anything will happen with Blalock or Jones? No..they’ll continue to get at-bats and suck it up with the occasional homerun that gives them a brief reprieve.

  • Little O

A few of us were on the record here at the start of the season against the idea of keeping Jones. He had an impact in a few games early but I think this is what we’re in for the rest of the season with him.

  • Fred

Just read thru the tread. AJM was spot on.
AG was spot on. Pena and Gonzales wre given up on by Rangers–as was Haffner.
    Let’s let one develop.

  • Jack Daddy

Just got back from game. This is an official word from the VOICE OF THE FAN:

Get rid of Andruw Jones and Hank Blalock NOW and pull up Borbon and (as soon as he’s ready) Max Ramirez. Smoak up on September 1.

I have no problem being patient with struggling YOUNG hitter (Elvis, Salty, Davis, Cruz) – you expect that they (and you) will be better for it. Why are we riding out 3 months of below average play by tthese downside veterans? In the words of Blake Beavan – our youngs guys couldn’t do any worse.

I have lost my patience with these guys. We aren’t slumping – this is what it is. The OBP of these guys is putrid. In hindsight, keeping Jones AND Blalock over Pussy Cat was a terrible move. I’m not blaming mgmt for that decision – I am getting hot under the collar for making it worse by not acting.

Borbon is a HOT hitter right now and brings things that this offense NEEDS. Plus, Byrd is being exposed as an over -exposed 4th OF. Byrd, cruz and Murphy should be splitting LF and DH (with Hammy in right). PERIOD. Not willing to debate it. we need to prep for 2010 NOW.

  • Chris Hartman

The lineup needs an overhall bigtime. Young presses in the three hole. Move him back to two where he is comfortable. Put Vizquel(rotate him defensively with the three non-firstbasemen in the infield while they dh) leadoff, and Kinsler 3 hole. Murphy 4, Cruz 5, Salty 6, Byrd 7, Davis 8, and Andrus 9. If that doesnt do the trick, bring up Bourbon. At the very least it will give our infielder’s partial days off in the heat of the summer.

  • Jack Daddy

nice post ajm. agreed. young players need rope that has always been our problem. we don’t give the young guys rope, but guys like blalock, Jones and Byrd, we’ll roll out there day after day. bryd is playing 1 to 2 too many times a week. every minute that blalock and Jones are playing is too many. jones is done. hank is the frustrating one. he is a disappointment to the game and symbol for how the game has changed for the worse. He doesn’t even appear to be attempting to spray the ball. he has totally gotten away from what made his potential unlimited. he is ONLY 28!

his comments this week illustrate how clueless he is.

People need to back way off on these young kids and let them play and develop. Mgmt needs to back way off some of these veterans.

    @AJM: you nailed it.
@MikeE: I was at the game with my dog (Bernard). For each person and dog, you get 3 seats. So, yes, Bernard had his own seat all night. And it really didn’t seem very hot. The section where I was was shady and there was a nice breeze. Also, they had people walking around in the stands checking to make sure that the dogs were OK. They were even handing out bottles of cold water for the dogs. I didn’t need it because I had packed plenty of ice water and snacks for Bernard, but I did think that it was a really nice touch.
