6:28: My pool is your pool.
6:30: Lots of pre-game coverage. Jeff Miller writes about Julio Borbon’s arrival in the majors and resurgence of the Angels. I hacked out a column about the significance of Borbon’s arrival.
7:19: Perhaps its not been made clear in coverage throughout the day on Julio Borbon’s status, whether he is a fill-in until Josh Hamilton returns or a permanent addition. That’s because that determination has not yet been made. If the Rangers want to keep Borbon, they are going to have to bid farewell to one of their current outfielders. That could put Andruw Jones on the bubble. Of course, if the Rangers could find somebody to take Hank Blalock’s salary off their hands, they’d probably do that deal right now. Blalock has about $3 million in salary remaining. Rangers probably wouldn’t even want much more than a token in return, just the salary relief. The question is: Would anybody do it at this point?
7:22: The Rangers have signed second-round pick 3B Tommy Mendonca of Fresno State. The powerful Mendonca (pronounced Men-DON-Tza) receives a bonus of approximately $590,000. He will immediately go to Spokane. Expect Mendonca to be an above average defender with real power, but he will strike out a ton.
7:27: Julio Borbon’s first major league at-bat ends in swinging strike on breaking ball after he’d taken two of them earlier in count.
7:48: So, the crowd looks to be low 20′s here. Rangers are expecting big crowds for Dollar Hot Dog night Wednesday and for fireworks on July 4th. But when the only draw is a pennant race? Not so much of a draw, apparently.
7:51: Should have mentioned these pitching notes earlier. RHP Tommy Hunter will get at least one more start, probably this Saturday against Tampa Bay. Doing that allows the Rangers to push Scott Feldman back a couple of days and into the series at Los Angeles next week. The Rangers should go Kevin Millwood, Feldman and Derek Holland against the Angels in Orange County. … Also asked manager Ron Washington if Frank Francisco had been returned to closer since C.J. Wilson pitched the eighth and Francisco was warming up for the ninth. Washington was non-commital about Francisco’s role in the bullpen.
7:57: You know how when you got hit with the ball in Little League, the coach (or your dad) would say “Walk it off.” Well, Marlon Byrd just “Trotted it off” a pitch after fouling a ball off the inside of his left knee. I’m still not sure he’ll finish the game because that has got to hurt, but he looked OK jogging around the bases after he homered.
8:08: Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t believe there was a winner in the homer pool tonight.
8:10: Do you know that Vlad Guerrero’s single in the fourth inning was his first hit against the Rangers this year.? He missed the mid-May series.
8:13: Prompted by BobBland’s “mid-season cynicism,” I am once again fascinated with the phenomena of Rangers fans who seem to race to be the first off the bandwagon. I didn’t grow up here, so I don’t have 37 years of frustration vested in the club, but I want to ask why there seems to be so much willingness to stop believing in the club. That’s not a shot at you Bob; just an observation I make each year and each year I’m interested to see what people have to say.
8:51: Vicente Padilla hitting a wall and allowing five straight hits to start the sixth inning is definitely not a good sign. The fastball velocity has been down all night. It’s been 88-91 mph. Padilla is usually a 91-94 mph guy. Could be the root of the problem.
9:03: Vicente Padilla did not hit a batter for the fifth consecutive game. It leaves him one shy of the longest stretch of games without a plunking in his career as a starter. He went six games without one from April 25-May 26, 2007 while with the Rangers. He also did it in 2002.
9:21: In case you need a laugh, here I am doing what I do best: Eating. Thanks to Nancy “Puck Bunny” Nichols for putting up some video of me embarrassing myself this afternoon. But the food was really good.
9:24: Crowd is 16,985. Really? That’s terrible, third lowest home figure since start of May.
9:30: I apologize for not updating this sooner. Eric Nadel’s eye surgery went well this morning and he was on his way home from UT-Southwestern well before noon. I know he was tired this afternoon, but otherwise able to text me (and spell all words correctly, so he’s seeing OK with his one eye right now). He will be re-evaluated again tomorrow by the doctor. I’ll try to get you a quicker update Tuesday.
9:36: Well, there is your break, an error on Erick Aybar, trying to handle Nelson Cruz’s grounder up the middle. Now up to pinch hitter Hank Blalock to gain back some trust with a solid at-bat.
9:38: Not blaming the Rangers or Julio Borbon for anything because today was a day to shake the lineup up, but you know your DH is miscast when you pinch hit for him with another left-handed hitter against a right-handed pitcher. Blalock put himself in a quick hole with a hard swing at an 85 mph pitch up in the zone. Way out in front. Then he grounded to short on a 2-and-1 pitch.
9:43: Josh Hamilton is 1-for-4 tonight at Double-A Frisco as the DH. He’s walked, driven in a run with a single and stolen a base. He will work out with the big league club Tuesday then move his rehab assignment to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
9:53: Bottom third of the order coming up. They are 1-for-9, the lone hit being an infield single. Taylor Teagarden’s second-inning fly ball to center is the only time the bottom three hitters have gotten the ball out of the infield.
I’m ready for this. Bring on the Angels.
@Evan,
One small benefit to batting Borbon immediately before Teagarden/Davis – you can try to mitigate the KOs with his stolen bases. What I mean, is if Salty/Davis K and don’t move over a just singled Borbon, you can put the steal on to try to salvage their AB and still get him into scoring position. You can also run him on 2 strike counts (and 2 out) to Davis, knowing that he happens to get caught, you’ve bought a fresh count for Davis. It increases the reward side of the risk/reward stolen base analysis.
Just read Mendoca (2nd round pick) signed. Good news…now let’s sign those pitchers!
Looks like the rangers just signed mendonca, wonder where is will start his career.
@Evan,
By the way, what did you think of my Rescus Milton Bradley suggestion? It seems at some point (i.e., how much salary the Cubs would eat), that would be a move worth considering for Texas. In my mind that starts with them picking up AT LEAST 1/2 the remaining $$. No idea if they would consider that, but if I were the Rangers that would tempt me. Bradley for 2 1/2 years and $12.5MM? If I came away from a sit down with him and was convinced he would play through nicks and knacks, I would part with a Max Ramirez or 2nd tier pitching prospect to get that done.
Well — let’s just say I would THINK long and hard about it!!
@evan
so evidently borbon is DHing
…and hitting sixth
DHing is somewhat…interesting, but why would borbon ever hit sixth? in any lineup?
has he even hit sixth before as a professional?
Glad to have Nellie back….some are saying it is a “weird” lineup, I just think it’s “mixing it up”…..lord knows the other one wasn’t doing squat….Here we go. Let’s go RanGERS!
Let’s beat these clowns. Hopefully by 27 runs. I am royally annoyed by that pathetic display during the Padres series. The Rangers really need to help me exorcise this anger tonight!
That was AWESOME
Haven’t seen any big plays like that in a while!
I really wish they would reduce the number of interleague games, and make a more balanced schedule. It’s ludicrous that we have only played LA 3 times to this point, while having completely finished vs. Detroit and maybe others in the AL? We’ve played Seattle and Oakland lots more than LAA…
Padilla crackin’ jokes….
Ok, talk about early over-reaction, but too bad Kinsler can’t set a tone, instead of POPPING UP.
I see the shakeup didn’t change Kinsler at all. 2nd pitch swing for the fence………
I think there is something to be said about that. In defense of Kinsler, his swing is the exact same. It’s always been an uppercut style. His timing is off. Now his swing.
Not*
OK…..what a spot for the ROOK.
Here we go!
Evan,
Any chance they put Blalock on waivers to see if anyone wants his salary?
DANG! Almost had it……
Ugh, decent AB but that’s why you don’t bat a guy getting his first major league at bat 6th.
@Greg: Totally agree
nICE
It only took one major league at-bat for Borbon to prove he is a perfect fit for this team!
well at least julio fits right strike out
Greg, what would you say if that ball would have been hit a foot or so the other way? UGH u guys drive me crazy
Rather see that than Hank strikeout there.
FRANK …. IT WAS HIS FIRST MLB AB
Frank the tank, Frank the TANK, FRANK THE TANK
@jcouch That would’ve been great, instead he swung at a bad pitch for the strikeout. I’m not saying Hank or someone else wouldn’t have done the same thing, but someone with a little more experience should have been batting there.
My preferred lineup for the night would have been Kinsler, Andrus, Young, Byrd, Cruz, Murphy, Davis, Teagarden, Borbon
I think I heard that Young doesn’t like batting 3rd.
well at least July is off to a great start strike out with the bases loaded and
Good first at bad for him..and I agree. I’d much rather see him than Blalock or Jones.
@alan: you do understand that it is still June, right?
That strikeout ball dropped. That’s what good pitches do..appear to be strikes and are not. I don’t think that was a bad pitch to strike out on.
@Rangers Fan: I agree on the strikeout. The pitch was down and Borbon had taken those pitches earlier in the at-bat. With two strikes, you have to expand your strike zone. That’s what happens when you do.
I think we should send him down to the minors this inning and put AJ in the six hole
And someone get Alan a calender!
We must be patient. We must not overreact. Having said that, we must get rid of Jaramillo or Washington. I vote Jarimillo.
Yeah, went back and looked and it wasn’t nearly as inside as I thought it was. Still doesn’t change my mind that he should be batting ninth tonight.
sorry I wish it was July
Whatever, I’m stoked he’s up, but if you’re going to try and make his first game easier by not playing him in the field then make his first at bats less pressure filled as well and bat him ninth.
@alan: I’m still hoping that July will NOT start out like that.
Padilla better get ready the way this team swings the bat he may half to pitch a shut out
Figgins struck out on same pitch as Borbon i guess angels should send him to minors too.
@greg: personally, I agree. Fortunately for the Rangers, though, I am not their manager.
and someone get TD spellcheck….CalenDAR! Duh.
Kinsler…..
I do have a ? for all here if the shakeup in the lineup does not work and produce results fast then do we get to replace the hitting coach I know he has a great reputation and all but when does the coach get the blame ever?
@alan: 15 years good, 2 months bad. hmmm…
TAG with the CALL! Does he get the free stuff too Evan?? Thank YOU MURPH!
YEAH!!
@phil: well, we both just missed it – no one on, 3-1 count. I haven’t heard the distance, yet.
HOORAY! YET ANOTHER SOLO HOME RUN FOR THE RANGERS!!! What a well-oiled offensive machine this is!
Back to Back baby! Crushed.
Back to back YEAHS!!
@Bob: I won’t even say what I want….I respect Evan too much. We are winning 2-0 tho.
Sorry, but it’s hard to get excited by the continuation of periodic solo homers scattered about many, many more strikeouts.
The ratio remains too far out of whack.
We can hate on everything the team does or we can realize we are 1.5 games back from the team we are playing and hope for the best….
What is the point of pointing it out? Everyone knows strikeouts and shaky offense is a problem.
Borbon’s “2-for-2″!!!
Sorry…my mid-season Ranger cynicism kicked in a little early this year. I would love nothing more than to be proven wrong in a most serious fashion.
@TD: I choose to believe this is an extended slump and we will come out of it.
I think it is our right to be critical and question things, that just means we care right? But to complain about a homerun is ridiculous…..sorry BOB.
To try and be more positive about things, I will point out that Padilla continues to be brilliant ever since the waiving imbroglio. He and Millwood are definitely delivering.
You’re right, it was ridiculous for me to complain about the homer. Just overly frustrated with the June swoon.
Still say MY’s reactions are to slow for third.
@evan: no winner. Phil and I both had Murphy in the 3rd, ONE on, and a 2-1 count.
Big pitch by Padilla.
Would be nice to get another run here.
That’s not a shot at you Bob; just an observation I make each year and each year I’m interested to see what people have to say.
i just turn on the TV after getting home from work and I see Julio! I was shocked! wus sup everyone!
@evan: I don’t have an answer for you. In fact, I have often wondered the same thing. Is it like this with other teams/fans, or is this a DFW phenomanon?
@Evan: I’d say frustration is the best way to put it.
I think what has made the past month frustrating is that for forever, you always heard that all we need is pitching.
Well, this year, we actually get what is considered (at least by Rangers’ standards) good pitching, and the hitting is dismal.
It is the culture the club created. It’s not easy to do so many things, so wrong, for so long.
The only time I get off the wagon is at the end of the year.
@ehren: I agree!
I LOVE THE RANGERS
Evan Here is my take I equate the Rangers to a bad movie and in which you know something bad is about to happen you just dont know when it will happen and waiting for the moment when you heart will be broken Is some times just down right torture and thats my take I just know something will happen and they will lost this game I hope they dont but I almost expect it
Evan – It’s definitely a fair question. For me, after so many years of awful Rangers baseball, I had all but written them off until they suddenly gave us hope this season. Warming back up to them again, only to have the rug so jarringly yanked away seemingly yet once more is proving to be more painful than ever…at least for me.
My sports pain unfortunately manifests itself in ridiculously over-the-top and excessively bitter kneejerk reactions in the form of ill-advised internet postings.
More than anything, though, I just want them to win. Forty years without a playoff series win (and only a single game) hardens a fan.
Not ever off the wagon. I like where the team is going and the players that are playing here and coming up. Dallas is a winners (bandwagon) town no matter what sport it is. Frustrating.
alan said it much more eloquently and succinctly than did I.
I think it kind of has to do with instant gratification of rebuilding teams. It’s faster in other sports than baseball.
Doug Fu and Ryans Dad are also 100% on the mark.
@BobBland: Don’t be so hard on yourself. We’re here for your over-the-top, excessively bitter kneejerk reactions. Hopefully, we can provide balm for what ails ye.
@All: Great answers. No national magazine has ever done anything on Ranger fandom, but I’ve often said forget about the Cubs; this is the most tortured – and loyal – group of fans in the country. I mean that as a compliment.
I just don’t have any other teams other than the locals……RANGERS, MAVS, COWBOYS…and I guess Stars (not a big hockey guy). They are the only teams I root for….I watched so much bad baseball over the past several years, I get upset just like everyone else because I (obviously) want us to win, but I don’t ride or need the bandwagon…..I am either A) Stuck here in Rangerville or B)Not choosing to leave.
Also, here is a real point of contention I have regarding the whole on/off the “bandwagon” issue.
Is a fan automatically considered “off the bandwagon” because he/she is critical (even harshly so) of his/her team? The Rangers, like the Cowboys, have been screwing up so badly for so long now it really infuriates me.
But just because I’m not viewing the action through Ranger Red glasses doesn’t mean I’m “off the bandwagon” – I’m just a critical fan who refuses to let my teams off the hook when they continue to make the same mistakes time after time after time.
I have tried to adopt the Newburg approach to Ranger fandom. It seems like the sky is just a little bluer in that man’s world. I would love to live there.
There’s no way I could get off the bandwagon.
If I could survive the Benji Gil era, I can survive anything.
With all due respect, there’s a difference between jumping off a bandwagon and simply being frustrated and dismayed. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I am not saying “The Rangers suck! I hope they lose! I don’t care anymore!”
I am, however, saying that the way they have played over the last month has been stinking bad. And we were doing so well, that makes it even worse. It’s probably also the history of losing, but I do think that at some point you have to stop falling back on the “Oh it’s just a little bad spell/slump” or “Who would have thought that they’d be only X games behind on X date”. So the question is when do you start to boil over with frustration? I guess it’s individual, but my threshold was reached this weekend.
Thanks, Evan. I promise I’m no troll seeking to incite an online flame war. Heck, I’m using my real name and even linking to my blog with my e-mail address, so it’s not like I’m trying to toss molotov ****tails from behind a firewall. I just have always been excessively emotional about sports, especially when I think a team is underachieving.
If the Rangers had a roster full of spares and scrubs, I wouldn’t have any lofty expectations. But this team should be doing better. They need to start holding themselves to a higher performance standard.
I believe that is the second Benji Gil reference in the last 5 days. That is a sign of things not going well.
BRAVO, BEER GUY!
In other news: KINSLER GOT A HIT!
*GROUP HUG?*
Considering I can’t do anything about personnel moves I can only support the Rangers. It does bother me when people call Hicks cheap but after DUMPING money into Park et al during the Hart era, I have no problem him being choosing with his money. Case in point, Zito.
Having said all that, this game is going well so far!!
To put my angst in the proper historical perspective, here’s a blog entry I wrote back in mid-May: http://bobbland.wordpress.com/2009/05/17/rangers4real/
I did a lot of research into just how terrible the Rangers have been over the years compared with the other teams not only in baseball, but every other major pro sports league. It’s brutal. And it’s why we SO BADLY want this team to finally succeed!
@TD: just as long as we don’t share a salad.
Note to self: find word for adult beverage that can get past the web filter.
Does anybody realize that the Rangers have only lost 3 games to AL West opponents this season. That is a positive Ranger note.
Bob: Cah, Cah, Cahktail
@Bob: try dicktails
@Ryans Dad: Wow, I actually hadn’t thought about that. Good point! Makes me wish we’d played LA more games earlier when we were on a year!
i didn’t think it would work! my bad!!!
That’s funny Ehren
Excellent Rhyner reference, Ryans Dad (Rhyner’s dead).
And great stat – had no idea we were performing so well within the division!
I’m on bandwagon. Had just grown tired of watching failure from guys that won’t be part of this. I have no problem seeing Borbon K twice. Rather it be now than in April of 2010. He’ll be ok. Pretty nasty changeups he saw.
Ranger fans are an impatient and goofy lot.
Overheard 2 guys in the bathroom at work today complaining that the Rangers can’t win because they DON’T HAVE ANY PITCHING! Really? That’s the problem this year? We just don’t have very smart, informed fans.
Batting Borbon 6th was a bit curiuos, but I understand not wanting to disrupt the order and I like keeping Davis 8 and Elvis 9. I’m sure if Salty was playing, Borbon would have batted 7th.
This year should be looked at as pure gravy. This is extended spring training in my opinion, for 2010. We’re getting a pennent race out of it to boot. Our fans should be ashamed that we have 20K out there in a pennent race, with the 1st place team in town. Then again, the city of Dallas should be ashamed the stadium isn’t in the middle of downtown and then ownership should have pushed harder to make it happen.
Awesome, Ehren!
@Bobby “Blue” Bland: Nice entry on your blog! Once I had done something similar for all my favorite teams, just comparing regular season records since I became a fan. The Rangers aren’t the only source of my personal frustration…I have also been a fan of the Atlanta Falcons since the mid-80s (but the future looks bright!)
Beer Guy, your teams do look to have a bright future. Gotta love that Matty Ice! LOL at Bobby “Blue,” as my dad’s best friend used to call me that when I was a wee one.
Question:
Was Rangers mgmt ignorant for exposing Padilla to waivers where any team could have claimed him or are they geniuses for the apparent effect it’s had on him? I’m still not sure.
How does Vlad the Impaler beat that shift?
The team is still really young. We are at the stage of beating lesser teams and learning what it takes to beat the better teams. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose, sometimes it rains.
If you are really a Ranger fan, you know the collapse is coming but you stay a fan. It’s almost become a badge of honor for me. I wear my Ranger hat all the time in Florida and when people say something, I just shrug my shoulders and say I can’t help it. I really enjoy the good times and hope for better when the times are bad. If you’re a Ranger fan, you’ve just been conditioned not to expect too much. Winning one playoff game (not series, just a game) in 37 years will do that to you. But I keep hope alive and Keep the Faith. Because one day, one day, they just might do something. And it may be in my lifetime.
I will say this I do equate us to the Cubs in this respect I know the Rangers will never win anything big in my lifetime and I am somehow at peace with that too I except for the Longhorns the Rangers ar my faviorte team in the world and I would love to say nothing better than to say American League Champions and world Champions and yet I know that will never happen and you see Maylon Byrd proves my point so easily I can sit here and watch them get two on and nobody out and you know they will screw it up and see there you go now if that was any other team you know they would at least scored one run but man that is where my it comes from times like that watching a team consistelnty night in and night out not do the small things is what makes me the kind of fan I have become
@all – if we don’t stretch this lead, I’m about to pour a stiff dicktail. Well, just as I speak, 2 run shot. Bummer.
Pretty sure Vlad hasn’t cleaned his helmet since 2002.
Reminds me of the old Fake Jason Kidd ditty from his first Mavs tour of duty: “We’re a yo-u-u-ng team.”
Does that mean Wash is the Jim Cleamons of the Rangers?
Well damn.
“stiff dicktail” LOL
Good point Ehren. I went back and looked at the birthdate’s of everyone on the roster. Only Millwood, Vizquel, and “Every Once in a While” Eddy are older than me. And I still feel like I’ve got a few big league seasons in me.
Padilla meltdown….
Can we waive Padilla again
Well back-to-back damn.
must…resist…urge…to…spew…venom…
Padilla’s doing ok, still a quality start. But WE NEED RUNS!
NEVER GOING TO WATCH THE RANGERS AGAIN!
@Beer Guy: I’ve been a fan of the Falcons since the 1970s and had given up on them when Vick got busted, but then they had to go and draw my interest again last year. … Stuck with Hawks until I completely lost interest in NBA about the time Dominique retired. … and I think most folks here know where I stand on my beloved UGA Bulldogs. Love ‘em, win or lose.
@All: I think if Rangers management read this thread, they’d have to concur that you are one loyal, passionate group of fans.
Uhhhh, nevermind.
two on and nobody out and nobody scores and back to back homerun from them need I say anything more
Get him out.
@Jack: Far from ignorant. Nobody was going to pick him up. It does send a message to him. If someone did pick him up then you dump his salary and bring in Hunter to take his spot full time. I do not want to say Benson.
Think of it this way. November of this year and Padilla will be an a-hem…Benji Gil type memory and we can move on with someone a little more mentally together.
So, is Vlad now up to like .823 lifetime at The Ballpark?
We need somebody to “sweep the leg” on that mofo!
If it was two years ago, I’d say at least we have Cowboys training camp to look forward to, but…um, yeah. Not so much, buddy.
This guy is a mental midget.
@Evan: Bought an official Ryan hoodie which I will proudly wear on Sundays this fall! 2 years ago was about the worst year of my fanhood. But we can have some good fights over NCAA…I’m a Razorback fan
Of course, the only basketball championship they won happened to be while I was living in Europe for a year and totally missed most of the games and any celebration…As for NBA, it’s Portland all the way! (Been a fan since the Clyde the Glide days)
OH man….that’s Padilla in a NUTSHELL. So close, yet so far away…….
@Evan…perhaps you should email them a copy. I often times believe Hicks takes fan support for granted. However, I think the players do notice the support they get.
Wow, Padilla totally lost it there.
Please read Bob Sturms posts on “rules” of being a fan.
COWBOYS will win the superbowl this year, the first of their BACK to BACK to BACK championships
Jennings in with 2 on. Score 2 for angels.
Boy, how about that sac bunt wholla go.
@TD: I would die an extremely happy man if Atlanta pummeled the Cowboys in the NFC championship game some year. I wouldn’t even care how the Super Bowl turned out!
I’d love to believe you, TD, but the last five games of their schedule this season seem to indicate otherwise. If they even go 2-3 after Thanksgiving it will be a miracle!
Ehren – agree. I liked the move. I had grown weary of Padilla. I actually don’t blame him for tonight. The second HR was a good pitch down. Vlad got on beating an overshift. Two hits sneak through the infield.
But boy, he lost it fast.
The one silver lining is the Halos bullpen blows chunks.
I’n not saying the effort isn’t there for the Rangers, but doesn’t it seem like our guys are “shellshocked” right now?
Why is Jennings in with men on?? I guess that whole strategy is out the window.
ryab where is that post at
Padilla’s 6th inning tonight = STRAH-GAH-LING!
The end is BRUTAL…gonna have to get some wins in the bag early! I contribute to a cowboys site:
http://www.lonestarstruck.com
hope that’s okay Evan.
To all the frustrated Rangers fans tonight – I have one that will really set you off (and this isn’t an attack on mgmt, as I thought reupping Hank was the right move at the time too)
We are paying Hank more than the Angels are paying Abreu on his 1 yr deal.
Chew on that one.
Nice strike out.
Did you know there’s a brand new dance taking the nation!!! The mini buffalo ranch sandwich! LOL
Do we think that there is any legitimate interest in Blalock?
@Rangers Fan: I wouldn’t think there would be.
Alan, it’s fictional. Sturm has been promising to write it down for years but never does.
@Jack: you still pouring the stiff one?
@TD – Lone Star Struck is a great looking site…well done!
Mmmm, hot for teacher
Reupping Hank was the right move. Moves like Van Poppel are the ones that need to get skewered.
By the way, forgot to mention this last week, but even Mrs. Jack Daddy mentioned how gawd awful the D Backs jerseys were (they don’t have the full name on there for crying out loud). Worst unis in baseball? Coming off two straight series against arguable the 2 best unis in baseball (Dodgers grays and Giants home whites).
So:
best:
1. Giants Home
2. LAD Road Grey
3. Red sox home
Worst:
1. D Backs
2. Padres camos (do they still wear those?)
3. As (green and yellow in any combo is atrocious).
@BOB: Thanks!
@RYANS DAD: lol….
@Ryans Dad: I concur!
TD: I must say, that is a very nice site.
Let’s throw it to Knoxy…
Could it individually be 10 peoples fault that every single ball put in play can be classified as a “pop” up? Can 10 major league hitter’s be unable to recieve and adapt to a message? I ask you, whose fault is this slump?
@TD: No worries.
@Ryans Dad: It’s clearly the opposing pitchers. These are Cy Young caliber pitchers, man!
OK….without being any kind of over critical..
IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR ONE OF THOSE CLASSIC RANGER 3 RUN HOMERS!?!?!?!?
What is the average tenure of hitting coaches in the majors?
“CLASSIC” as in circa 2003 LOL
OOPS…I meant 2004. SNARK FAIL!
@EHREN: Thanks, I must say…I only contribute, write and do some of the graphic design…the master of most of that is a really talented girl named Kelly.
I think Rudy has become the JoePa of major league hitting coaches, in just about every way imaginable.
(Not a compliment.)
Am I the only person actually happy with the way the Rangers have played the last month? They over achieved the first two months and showed a lot of promise, but honestly.. were you impressed with overall pitching – starters 3-5 and the bullpen? Were you happy with the situational hitting? Life on the long ball?
I was more concerned that the team would be in somewhat contention and then make the typical uber mistake of trading away talent at the wrong time.
The reason I am happy is that we now have the young players advancing to the majors. And if you read JN Braves manifesto this is exactly what we need. Young arms getting needed innings, young batters getting critical at bats.
Honestly, who thought of this team as a WORLD SERIES champion? Sorry, cannot agree with anyone on that one. I have been very impressed with the defense so far. Elvis has been fantastic. Chris has been super at first. When pitchers have a confidence in the defense they will take the chance at a sinker inducing a ground ball for the out. Believe me? No. Go look at Kevin M flyball to ground ball ratio for this year and prior years.
I love watching the Angels/Dodgers series, not for the rangers but the how the other teams execute. Bunting, smart base running, key hits, and then the key HRs along with good pitching. This was never the 2009 Rangers, but things are looking up. CD will get his chance to cut down the Ks. Ian needs to work or being consistent throughout the season. Elvis needs more at his position along with MY. Byrd, Hank, and Jones are short termers and will not be with the team next year. Outfield will be Murphy (and I do have to comment that I gave up on him after his early struggles), Cruz, Borbon, and Josh (I am thinking it is 50/50 he stays health for his career- as his wife said “God must love Ballplayers” in reference to him still being alive, you simply cannot abuse that much drugs and not have a long term health implications).
Pitching wise we will have Kevin M in another contract year, 3 H’s (Harrison, Holland, Hunter) to continue growing, and the X factor for a free agent additions along with Feliez.
The X factor is based on Hicks selling the team and the new owner has enough money to pick up another top of the order starter. BTW, I also think Wash and JD will be gone with the new owners.
I am happy, the team is… finally, improving. The pieces are starting to come together.
To all of the dissenters and nae-sayers, please provide a detail account how you think this team as WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS. Nah, didn’t think you could make an intelligent argument. But things are looking up.
Of course, you could look it up.
Now his batting average is only .851
Hey and you know I was reading to day from angels bloggers on another site dont know if i can say it or not here is for all to read
What is the feeling among Angels fans about the Rangers? Do they expect Texas to fold?
Sorry, Texas. But, yeah, they do. In fact, they’re counting on it. There’s a lot of history there that the Rangers have to live down before they are taken seriouslY
I hate to admit but they are right they know it and so do the Rangers and even when we swept them a while back they knew in the back of their head that we will get healthy and it will happen and until we can get over the hump this will always be our legacy
You make some really good points, Auditor. Best to look at this season as the prequel to future greatness (it is hoped).
Love the post Auditor, however if we lose JD for any reason, it will be one of biggest blunders this organization ever made. Think about that one for a while. JD made mistakes, guess what… he was 18 at the time. He learned from them and won’t make them again. He will land somewhere and use the training he got here to make a winner somewhere else.
I like this team. I only wanted to see improvement.
Auditor puttin the work in…I like it! Let’s add Hurley and make it the 4H Club.
geez, darren oliver. ol flanel arm.
If our offense accomplishes nothing else, and as far as scoring runs they do little of that, they have done a great job of elevating pitcher’s self esteem, be it fading veterans, anxiety plagued starters or rookies just up from AAA, our guys can make you feel like Cy Young in just a few short hours. Now your next start may be your last in the majors, but for just that moment in time, the Rangers offense will give you that feeling of a lifetime, the sensation of being a dominating big league hurler. See, these guys are good for something.
That’s what Nolan said he was looking for at the beginning of the season. That’s what I will be happy with.
I’d rather watch a team growing from a great farm system than an old team staggering into the playoffs.
Also, wasn’t it Giamatti (sp), the late NL commis who kicked Rose out of Baseball, who said something like “The game is designed to break your heart.”
So, you have to think of this team as World Series Champions? Hmm, interesting.
No, I don’t see them as WS Champs, but it would be nice to see them get into the playoffs and see what would happen once they got there.
I didn’t think wanting to make the playoffs was such a bad thing.
When and if the team is sold, I’m sure the choice of GM will be Nolan’s.
I hope that is not the case.
@Evan: Any info on “game night with Evan”? I know you’re hating me for consistently asking.
Sigh………..
To quote the groundskeepers from Major League II, “They’re sh**ty again!”
I really think that Jason Jennings can not pitch from the stretch. He does much better with clean bases.
Seventh Inning Stretch: Watch Evan judge a cooking contest!!! Surprise.
http://insidecorner.dmagazine.com/index.php/2009/06/29/seventh-inning-stretch-watch-evan-grant-judge-a-food-competition/
I think TAG just forgot about the inherited runner that Jennings let score.
Has anyone else sensed a little tension between Josh and Tom? Am I imaginning this? Has it always been there?
Cool!!! Thanks Nancy!
@Evan: How’s Eric doing after the procedure today?
Boy that must have been a tough job, Evan
I told myself and i told others who complained when they were winning to enjoy the ride because it will not last and you know I wish I would have enjoyed it because first place will be looking down at us for the rest of the year I am afraid
@Evan: I loved your description of Bacon and Gouda Cheese!!! WOW!!
Finally, Josh showed a little frustration there going to commercial break.
I haven’t noticed any tension between them, Ryans Dad…
Let’s have a season defining RALLY right here!
How much longer will the Rangers’ futility go unnoticed by Hollywood? Major League had the Indians, Rookie of the Year had the cubs, Little Big League the Twins; since I will never see the Rangers succeed in real life I would gladly fork over $8.95 to suspend reality for 2 hours.
Evan I hate to say it but the rest of the metroplex sees what the rest of us hate to admit and everyone know what I am talking about
@TD: i’m not sure that anything is season defining….
I’ll try to get you a quicker update Tuesday.
define defining?
just hoping for the best.
@TD: haha…well I’m not saying pack it in we’re done if we lose…and I’m not saying world series bound if we win.
Thanks Evan!
oh dear….here comes hank
OK, lets hear it on THIS move….
TD, i’m right there with ya.
Steal home!!!
C’MON HANK! lol….
well at least he didn’t strike out.
In that situation..what’s the difference between a strikeout and a groundout? Nothing…It’s hard to say anything about the move. You need the runs…so you put in a power guy. (who is powerless lately) But you brought the guy up for a spark and you sit him? Who knows anymore.
Pathetic.
What is with the crazy outfield grass patterns? Was one of the ground crew bored?
Please release Guardado.
What would the difference be on this team if the Rangers had not picked up the Blalock option? I venture to say nothing more than $6 million in the bank to pay front office employees.
Remember all the hype surrounding him when he was young and coming up…
AJ Murray with a 1.27 era and we have to watch everyone on eddie………
Avg .850
Hank was a beast back in the day…..2 All-Star games…he just lost it.
Wonder what happened???
back to our losing ways… too bad.
Sorry to be negative, but we aren’t going to come back from a 3 run deficit in the 9th, so I don’t think more runs for LA really matter much.
and falling
it’s sarcasm.
Hank was a beast for about 15 minutes back in 2003. He hasn’t been good in years. I hate to beat a dead burro, but why can’t “the best hitting coach in baseball” fix his swing?
Mathis? I really don’t understand that move.
SOMEBODY NEEDS TO LOSE THEIR JOB>>>> NOW!!!!!
Good news about Eric Nadel, Evan! At least we’ll have one positive Rangers note to take from tonight.
Here we go…buckle your seat belts everyone!
TD: I think the injuries really impacted his game.
@RyansDad: Rudy can tell him what he needs to do, but Hank is the one who needs to do it. He hit a lot better when he was driving the ball to ALL FIELDS as opposed to trying to pull everything out of the park.
Not to me cynical but…didn’t Bascik all but come out and say Blalock was on roids when eh was here? Could that be a reason? Or did I dream that?
That’s a pretty lame dream if you did dream that…lol.
I am of the opinion that HANK was juicing….
tough loss, buckle it up and get em tomorrow. that’s baseball. we’ve been in all but about 6 games this year. this year has been a smashing success.
you know what an 87 win season is? Its 2 six game win streaks surrounded by .500 baseball the rest of the way. That’s it. mix in a 3rd streak and you’re at 92 wins. We are going in a bad way. we’ll have a stretch where we get unconscious at the plate. the angels will cool off.
More importantly, we’ll improve and improve. Sit back and enjoy it.
We (players and fans) are all pressing.
I’ll never forget Blalock’s homer off Gagne in his prime during the All-Star Game. One of the greatest moments in Ranger history.
Scoop, he’s telling 10 major league hitters what to do. Are they all not listening? I refuse to believe that. If you want my personal opinion, and that is all it is,I think Rudy has been using chemistry to develop hitters all these years. There, I said it!
Rangers Fan – you heard it. He said it on a Saturday either last summer or the year before. I remember I was shocked to hear him make that accusation on the air. But it rang so true to me. And it wasn’t any sort of opinion – he said it like it was absolute fact. the guy is a disgrace to ballplayers.
Davis grounding out is a moral victory.
See yall next time.
Ryans Dad – I’m done clamoring for accountability for Rudy. Whatever. But I’ll say this:
1. his reputation was built on the success of a collection of players that have ALL either been found guilty of using or been strongly linked. ALL of them.
2. even in the “good ole days”, we would get shut down by upper end pitching. See the dang Yankees series. But he doesn’t seem to have any job risk. Meanwhile, Wash pinch hits for Vizquel 2 weeks ago (and lets Davis swing) and people want to fire him while in first place.
Whatever. Whatever. Whatever.
All of that being said, I don’t know how you hammer a guy for the failings of a bunch of rookies/2nd year players and 2 guys platooning at DH that NOBODY would take for free (ie., pay their salary without giving up prospects). So, I come back to, sit back and evaluate and develop.
@Bob B, Going old school, but I would love to see Bobby V as the next manager.
I jumped off the Rudy bandwagon years ago. I sit in the corner quitely waiting for an opportunity to advance my agenda. We almost had a head of steam a couple of years ago w the Sturm rant, only to get the air let out of the tires by a 30 run game. We will persevere. FREEDOM!
BTW, great post Jack Daddy
I agree with Jack Daddy. Let’s enjoy seeing young kids up and developing. It’s a fun team. They enjoy the game and are putting for the effort. The results will come in time and probably not this year….
ps- which player is a disgrace to ballplayers?
@ryansdad & JackDaddy: if Rudy was complicit in the ‘roids era, don’t you think Canseco would have exposed him? Also, are you saying Jeff Bagwell was juicing? He openly credits Rudy with helping him. How about MY? DeRosa? Byrd? Those are just off the top of my head. Rudy has a reputation throughout baseball as pretty much the best hitting coach around. I’m not just talking about Rangers’ homers – ALL OF BASEBALL. Does he have EVERYONE fooled? He is baseball’s “swing doctor.” If there is a hole in your swing, he can help you fix it; but he can’t get in the batters box and hit for you.
blalock. all the talent in the world, but he refuses to do anything other than try to pull the ball with all his might. maybe i’m being too harsh, I’m just done with the guy.
I thought the hitting coach was to teach, and the manager was to make sure they did it. Maybe Rudy is overrated, but I don’t think he’s in a position to chew their butts if the players don’t do what he says.
I completely agree. He’s got nothing and still yaps his mouth about playing time.
How about MY and Byrd? DeRosa is an all star SINCE he left. Do you think it’s impossible that Bagwell was juicing? He just may well have everyone fooled, but not me.
@scooper – i’m not technical enough or bright enought to question his merits. From a mechanical standpoint, I would assume that he is top notch. I just don’t like the mental approach at the plate. Maybe it has nothing to do with him. Maybe it does. It just seems weird that we’ll fire a manager (who really doesn’t have as much impact on the performance imo) to shake things up but the coaches continue on. what other coach in what other sport has kept a job for 19 years with out post season success? The 3 times they did go, they laid 3 goose eggs.
again, it just strike me as strange.
matthews was another guy that he “turned” around and was another roid guy.
like i said, I’ve move past whether he stays or goes. Just get rid of blalock and jones and i’ll be happy.
@JackDaddy: I think it was last summer when Blalock was on one of his tears. He had started to again (for a short period of time) drive the ball the other way. And he admitted that he had been too stubborn about not making adjustments.
@ryansdad: no, it is not impossible, but his name hasn’t come up. and DeRosa left because, Rudy had helped him. He changed pretty much everything about his swing. That was his chance to get a big contract and the Rangers weren’t going to pay that much. Do you want to bet that he would come back in a NY minute if we were paying him what he is making now?
@JackDaddy: he’s kept his job here because his teams have ALWAYS hit. What coach or manager who has had success for that many years is fired because the portion of the team that he is responsible for has a 2-month slump? We haven’t even fired pitching coaches that fast. And he can’t be held accountable for our lack of post-season success. You know, we didn’t make the playoffs so let’s fire the hitting coach, even though we have one of the highest scoring offenses in baseball.
Here is a chicken/egg question. If Texas had allowed 10 runs tonight, would they have only scored 2? I’m guessing that Soscia would have probably gone looking to the back of his bullpen to find the worst pitcher he could to eat up innings. So let’s say that they scored 2 or 3 more runs. Wow, what a great offensive team, if only they had some pitching! Does that hold water?
Listening to Diamond Talk (which I told myself I would stop doing because I think they offer very little) and they keep calling Jones a potent bat and a guy who’s swinging the bat well. Is he? I thought he had the lowest average on the team or something close. Why in the world would you want to see Jones in there??
Great discussions tonight everyone! Loved it.
If I had time I would comment on Rudy. Maybe another night!
Me too Auditor, I look forward to those comments.
I think scooper is winning this discussion about Rudy, although there is a whif of roids. There are too many guys and too much success to give roids most of the credit. Also, he clearly would be snapped up in a second by a contender if we let him go.
I understand it’s a losing argument. I fight the good fight though because I believe in the cause.
My point about Rudy and ‘roids was simply, if he was complicit then blame him. If he wasn’t complicit, then he can’t be blamed because his hitters took ‘roids. I think we’ve figured out that A LOT of players used ‘roids – not just Rudy’s guys. And guys like Jerry Hairston and Gary Matthews Jr. – their careers were going nowhere and they were desperate. They were probably at the point where they would do ANYTHING to keep their careers going. Again, that has nothing to do with Rudy.
@JackDaddy: I know what you are saying about scoring lots of runs in a blowout loss, but what about all of those 10-8 wins we got? The other teams weren’t throwing their scrubs at us in those games – they were trying to win.
I don’t get the whole bandwagon bailout either. Except for the fact that the two are one in the same. I’m guessing it’s largely Cowboy frontrunners, who are also Mavs and Stars frontrunners. I’m as frustrated as the next life long Ranger fan, and I even wished failure on them over the 01-06 seasons, but toward a brighter future. This years troubles pale in comparison to past debocles (read: John Hart era). We ALL would have taken this position in December and been stoked to be in contention this late in the game – and a good year ahead of plans. I don’t get why our “fans” are so anxious to bail on this team, but I’m surrounded by them.
I just got back from a cleaning materials symposium in Brazil. Why are we not hitting?
@scooper, everyone. All good points on Rudy. I admit that I don’t have the answer. I don’t think I’m advocating replacing him. Again, I attribute this mostly to 1: 3-4 really young guys in the lineup, 2: josh being out and everybody pressing (and trying to lift the young guys), 3: evan’s point about FAs to be swinging for the fences and 4: jones having no business on this team.
I don’t think Rudy should fry for that, just don’t think Wash should either. I do think they need to address what appears, at least to me, to be a disconnect in the plate approach that is being stressed to these guys.
I am beginning to think Ian may not be cut in the mold of a leadoff guy. Mostly I just want to sit back and watch this season “simmer” and not make any judgments on coaches or young players (other than that Hank and Jones are wasting my time being in the lineup).
I want to see as much as possible of Holland, Hunter, Harrison. I want to see young guys. I don’t want to make a rash trade (as i think it was auditer said best), though I’m not convinced this thing doesn’t need an impact corner bat to make a run for NEXT year. We’ll have a better opinion after seeing josh back and how he performs (and how that allows cruz to perform). Bottom line – i just want to watch and learn the rest of the way. Finally, would LOVE to see Martin Perez jump to Frisco (akin to what feliz did last year going from clinton).
Night. Enjoy talking bb with you boys.
