ARLINGTON - Julio Borbon usually doesn’t miss calls to his cell phone. But he missed three during dinner last night in Nashville, Tenn., with his family. Then he noticed they were from Oklahoma RedHawks manager Bobby Jones.
“Which is not a common thing, so I knew something was up,” he said. Up, indeed. Called up to the Rangers and hitting sixth tonight against the Angels as the DH.
“It definitely caught me off guard,” Borbon, 23, said a short time ago before taking the field for pre-game drills. “I’m here. It’s a dream come true. Just excited to be here and ready to go right now.”
The expected move to make room on the roster will be reliever Willie Eyre being optioned to Oklahoma.
The left-handed hitting Borbon was hitting .298 with the RedHawks, with 19 stolen bases in 23 attempts and a club-high 53 runs.
“I’m coming in to do what I’m capable of doing,” he said. “Being able to make some things happen with my speed. Put the ball in play. Put some bunts down. Play the same game I was playing in the minor leagues.”
He said he has been told he’ll be in the outfield for Tuesday night’s game.
“put some bunts down”
Maybe he can teach the rest of these fools
What the hell is doing hitting DH? Isn’t one of his pluses his plus defense in center?
@greg,
I would suspect the thought was, let’s let him DH so his baseball head isn’t running 100 mph out there. Let him gradually get in the water. I’m sure the dude didn’t sleep lst night and his mind and heart are racing.
Tough to get off the bus, and then that night play CF at the Ballpark. I like putting him at DH tonight to just get him here. Heck, let him find out where the locker room is at before asking him to guard CF…
Uh, batting 6th?
Well now that he’s finally been called up, maybe people will finally start spelling his name correctly! He’s not a whiskey!
And anyway, shouldn’t there be an accent mark on the second o? Borbón?
Actually, the whole accent mark thing is probably not correct. I just realized that he was born in MISSISSIPPI…I’m not sure they know what accent marks are
