5:32: We’ve chased all of the lap swimmers out of the pool, so feel free to splash around in there.
7:12: Because we have a very nice family, the Malones of Plano, here as winners of our Dr Pepper SportsSnaps promotion, I’m going to fold some notes into the blog tonight, so just be aware of that. It’s hard work, being an ambassador for the game and all. But if you haven’t entered a picture in the SportsSnaps promotion, I encourage you to do so. You can even make up the sports competition. Nerf Tennis, anyone? Paper football. Extreme ironing. Or my favorite, competitive eating.
7:18: According to manager Ron Washington, RHP Tommy Hunter will start Friday against Tampa Bay and RHP Vicente Padilla will go Saturday. Tonight’s starter Scott Feldman could either pitch the Sunday finale or be held back for the second game of the series at Los Angeles next week. A lot depends on how he throws tonight. The Angels are a bit – but barely – less effective against lefties, which might make LHP Derek Holland a more attractive option. Also, if Feldman were to get hit around tonight, the Rangers might think twice about sending him against the Angels twice in a seven-day period.
7:45: Ian Kinsler’s homer – and a not so subtle hint from Rangers’ PR Guru John Blake – reminds me to remind you that you can still vote for Kinsler for the All-Star Game. Though he is still leading the balloting, his lead over the hated Dustin Pedroia (again, Boston, I’m kidding – it’s shtick) has dwindled to 7,000 votes. Mr. Blake, who I believe once ran the Chicago Mayoral Election Oversight Committe, reminds us that any fan who votes the maximum number of times allowed online (25), can receive two free Rangers tickets. I don’t feel nearly so badly about promoting electioneering after watching some kid turn in 7,000 ballots in Arizona last week. I’m not kidding. The kid punched 7,000 ballots.
“I’m not excited about the outcome, but I am interested to see who gets voted in,” said Kinsler, who was chosen as a backup last year. “I think it would mean the same thing any year – unless you play in Boston or New York. If you get voted in and don’t play in one of those cities, it means a lot of people recognize the way you play the game.”
Added Kinsler: “I’d like to go again. I’d rather be around baseball during the break, than go fishing.”
Interjected Michael Young: “You don’t fish.”
“I know,” Kinsler said. “But my agents do. They are country boys.”
7:58: I don’t want to get anybody too excited here, but the combination of a slow couple of innings and some fast typing has put us on a record comment pace. Not that I’m urging a plethora of comments or anything, but how great would it be to see the mighty 588 fall in less than a week. Remember the rules of the game, too: Salient comments, please. Stuff like: “I can’t believe Scott Feldman blew a three-run lead just like that.”
8:02: The upshoot of rearranging the starting rotation is that Derek Holland is available for a few nights in the bullpen. Alas, he was already warming up as the second inning came to an end.
8:12: Judges ruling: Though he was one pitch off, Auditor was closest on count and closest on distance. Got to give the Auditor some love, especially when that many poeople called a first-inning homer for Kinsler. So auditor, send me an email for further instructions.
8:42: Just for the record, I think I should point out the Rangers have scored six runs the last two nights – on five home runs. They still aren’t finding ways to get runners home when they are on base. They are 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position tonight.
8:50: Good news, bad news situation. Bad news first: Rangers still haven’t scored in any method other than homer the last two nights; good news: Marlon Byrd’s three-run homer ends team’s 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. And it gives the Rangers a 7-3 lead. What on earth will they do with a four-run lead?
9:05: Back in 2007, LHP Joe Saunders name came up as a desired trade target if the Rangers were going to make a deal with the Angels. The Angels weren’t going there. Good thing for the Rangers. Saunders has been outstanding everywhere other than Rangers Ballpark. He’s 0-4 (and possibly headed for 0-5) with a 11.67 ERA in five starts in Texas. He’s given up seven homers in nine innings this season and 12 in 24.2 innings for his career.
9:15: Elvis Andrus is one stolen base away from tying Scarborough Green’s single-game stolen base record, which was set during a very strange week in Rangers history in 2000. Green stole five bases at Seattle on Sept. 28. Later that week Johnny Oates fired Dick Bosman as pitching coach after earlier in the season saying vowing to never fire any of his coaches. Then, on the penultimate day of the season, the Rangers lost 23-2 to Oakland.
9:20: Walk to Kendry Morales ends streak of 11 straight retired by Feldman. If he makes it through six and has a quality start tonight – going well over 100 pitches, he should demonstrate to management that he can be trusted for 110-115 pitches if need be. Feldman surpassed his career high in pitches thrown when he hit 110. He get Mike Napoli on pitch No. 115 to finish what should go down as another quality start.
9:29: That was one wild pitch!
9:30: More irrelevant data: Toby Harrah is here tonight. So is Rusty Greer, Bobby Witt and their kids baseball team. And Ben Grieve paid a visit to his dad, old Poo-Poo Grieve. An old-timer’s game could break out at any moment.
10:23: Even in a blowout game, there are things that make me pause. C.J. Wilson entering a game with a six-run lead. Then coming out to start a second inning. And now his pitch count is approaching 30. Strange, huh?
10:24: And there he goes.
Hey, Evan! Are you ready for a Rangers victory?
If you get a chance, please tell the Rangers’ management that their guys did a great job with Dog Night. Everyone was really helpful and gracious. They even came around in the stands checking on the dogs and handing out cold bottles of water for them. It was really cool and I’m looking forward to the next one. Thanks for passing that on!
So where’s Julio? Down at the school yard?
I’m ready for a victory!!!
mama pajama must have called him home.
I thought Julio was supposed to start in the OF tonight. Was that just his understanding or did Wash change his mind?
EG: Why is Wash so set on having Kinsler leadoff. Elvis has almost a .400 obp vs LHP. It would be nice if Elvis hit first and Ian was moved down to 3rd. Sometimes I think Ron Washington has his head stuck in the sand.
Julio needs to lead off.
I am tired of watching Andruw Jones bat fourth in the lineup.
i’m surprised jones is back in. i feel like it’s just slightly better than hank. but not much. and still kinda not awesome.
Where is Uncle Julio? Andruw needs to get released.
Does everyone hear that? Shh. Listen close? Hear it? That’s the sound of me beating my head against my desk. Why is Andruw Jones playing (rhetorical q – i know its b/c a lefty is going) – didn’t wash know that yesterday when he said borbon would start tonight? Very, very strange back-track.
oh well. Can’t wait to see some zero energy Andruw all or nothing Jones.
Let’s see…..We have a guy knocking the cover off of the ball in AAA, leading off. We call him up and bat him 6th for one game and pinch hit for him after three ABs. Next night we bench him. He doesn’t get ABs at AAA or the Bigs. I must be missing something…like maybe a train wreck comin’. I don’t think the office management and the field manager are Geeing and Hawing very well together. Oh, I get it…Somebody wants Jones. Let’s Hope.
Only thing about showing A.J. and Hank is if they get a hit and look good then you have to keep them because they would be the only ones doing so.
I put up a piece on my site (that’s my new strategy – write something every 2 months) on why we might want to tap the brakes on pulling up Smoak. Dug into the numbers a bit regarding how many ABs college/hitting prospects should get in the minors.
Thoughts? Agree? Disagree?
Post something similar under Evan’s article this morning, if you would rather look there.
Makes me think he shouldn’t be up before 9-1, if then.
exactly, let’s hope they’re just giving jones a twirl around the room and someone will think he looks so super pretty that they’ll just HAVE to have him… man, i still can’t believe they didn’t get rid of hank during spring training when folks seemed interested.
@All: Borbon is most assuredly not playing tonight because the Angels are starting a premiere lefty in Joe Saunders. Just because you call a guy up and say you are going to play him regularly does not indicate playing him EVERY day. But it goes back to my point from today’s column – finding time for Borbon isn’t the easiest thing in the world since he is an outfielder by trade and the outfield isn’t a real issue.
i wonder if chone’s mom and andruw’s mom were friends and decided on fun spelling of names togheter.
@becca: who knows, they may even be sisters! Maybe Torii Hunter’s mom, too.
torii’s mom too.
ha! scooper, you’re faster with the fingers and the typing than me!
only because I hadn’t hit submit on my post.
i know i see him several times a year, but vlad is huge. a lot of baseball player.
another good one is jhonny peralta with the indians.
Yeah! We need to hold a competitive eating and/or drinking contest for Cornerians!
well, that’s a good start.
per Evan’s 7:12 post about making up sports competitions.
if it involves bacon, all you guys are screwed. bacon loves me as much as i love bacon.
Hey all!!! Just in time for Kin’s homers!!!
I’m sure they don’t want Borbon to hit of Saunders tonite, especially after his difficulties last nite. Jones is playing instead of Blalock b/c he’s a RH hitter (as daddy said). Last time I looked at Smoak’s numbers (and it was before he got hurt) he had Salty like splits–pretty bad from the RH side (against LHP). I’d think they’d want to see improvement before bringing him up–especially since Davis is a LH hitter.
i was about to say, ‘geez, sure looks like an upper cut by ian’ but then i guess that was kind of the point.
Auditor won!
work at night = poop
@evan, no issue with that. But why say yesterday he would be in OF tonight? It makes it sound like you don’t know what you’re talking about. Just say nothing.
wait! I’m not sure about that! What was the count?
Nice, start, HR, walk.
Never mind! I’m getting out of the judging game! It’s Evan’s decision.
Good evening everybody. Splittin time between ya’ll and Ryan right now.
hello bats. it’s nice to see you guys again.
THIS is the way to start a ballgame!
Woo Hoo, great start!!
Dare we hope that we have Saunders’ number tonight?
They should have an age limit on those that can get a HR ball in the grass. Some big guys pushing little kids around is not cool.
Ranger fan Willis-
“Kin’s homers” (plural)
From your lips to God’s ear!
Nolan must’ve had another speech for the boys before today’s game. Keep it up, Rangers….
i love that that was only the first out.
You’re kidding, right, Auditor? You don’t complain about when it’s hit in the stands, why should it be any different in the grass? Finders, keepers, losers suck….
i missed the call by that much! well 6 innings later.
@IrishP1: watch out! we’ll sick TAG on you!
Anyone been having probs with their AT&T Uverse? I’m forced to listen to Nadael and Co. rather than the greatness of Lewin & Grieve….
he goes by poo-poo now.
What was the count on kins homer???
Grieve? I love that guy! Why you wanna sick him on me? It’s an opinion, that’s all, take it for what you will.
Yeah, and it was Evan’s family that gave the new nickname.
@Fred – I get excited by the long ball, and it affects my typing. Hope I didn’t jinx him though…
nice walk murph!
Auditor–agree with you. It’s supposed to be a fun thing. Maybe one nite a months let the bigger guys out there now with the kids try it with the really big guys, and see how they like it.
Didn’t realize how well the Rangers do against Saunders. Apparently we have owned him as of late….
i love great at bats like murf’s. walks really really are a good thing!
@IrishP1: surely you remember his rant about the man in the stands taking the ball away from the kid! that’s all my reference was about.
Here’s an idea, take the grass away and put seats there. Even field then…
am i the only one that pronounces Chone’s name as it looks like? never thought it was shawn.
@IrishP1: at least in arlington.
Ah, I hear ya. My bad. I’m dying not being able to watch this. Thank god for my lindy’s College Football preview.
@IrishP1: No go. Batter’s Eye.
chiicks dig the small ball.
every time i see the name chone i think of ‘chode’ and then i giggle.
I’m streaming the game at work, how was Davis’ at bat?
choda boy!!! LOL!!!!
I think I liked him better when he was swinging at strike three.
K
Agreed with becca. As far as Davis’ at bat goes? It was a K, what more do you need to know?
@scooper: at least it shows an effort.
As a Ranger fan, I don’t take any moral victories, unlike the typical US Soccer fan. A loss is a loss in my books…
DP boys, and I don’t mean the sexual abbreviation….
Nothing I guess. Did he work the count at least?
Yeah, it was 2-2 before the K.
Cruz sure doesn’t like that wall!
@fred: I would rather he slid and missed a foul ball than run all out, catch it and hurt himself running into the wall.
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
After Hamilton’s injury, would you?
Feldman starting to look like Saunders, here we go again….
nice bunt!
i can live with that call.
Rangers just got one called their way.
uh, weird play
@ehren: especially the result!
It feels like Feldman has been around for a long time, but I think he’s only 25. Is that right?
the bounce pitch isn’t often utilized in the majors. way to go keeping those batters on their toes!
I voted 25 times evan. How do I get my tickets?
scoop-It’s at least the 3rd time this year I’ve seen Cruz go into a very early slide and not get to the ball. I’ll bet the pitcher’s love him. As I’ve said, he gets a poor jump and takes poor angles. he just has a lot to learn in the field.
@evan: so kins is planning on spending the break with his agents? Mrs. Kinsler might have something to say about that!
@Scooper: he’s 26.
@becca: i think he’s aiming for the toes.
@ehren: thanks!
@becca: I think he’s keeping them OFF of their toes.
@ehren: either way, it’s unexpected!
start pouring the dicktails!
well, so i guess this angel team is legit, eh?
becca-
It is as long as they swing at it. Look at our guys.
Broader comment–poor Feldman, the balls have eyes tonite.
OK. This is not good.
Feldman doesn’t have control tonight.
Sigh, I don’t know how much more of this I can take…
And here’s the Ranger baseball we’ve all come to love. Anyone wanna chalk this up as a loss yet?
Uh, I’m thinking we don’t have Feldman pitch against the Angels next week.
@irish: it’s not over yet! sure, if it takes anouth30 minutes to get this last out, then, well, maybe???
but it’s early. i have faith! and at least it looks like the rangers aren’t going to roll over on the offense.
57 pitches thru 2 innings.
OMG, did we just get Vlad “The Ranger Impaler” out? I’m shocked.
Time for a repeat of the bottom of the 1st boys.
It might take 12-15 runs to win this one.
@becca: I’m with you! There is still a lot of time!
way to go, elvis! take one for the team!
it’s not a loss till the 9th.
There is a lot of time not only for the Rangers, but also the Angels, keep that in mind….
SAFE!
Elvis is a god on the bases. 12-13 on steal attempts…
whoo, hoo! a stolen base by elvis!
@Irish: I’m just practicing the power of positive thinking.
@scooper: we probably should start chanting to go with the thinking.
I really don’t want to see Holland come out of the bullpen again. Either throw him out there every day 5th day or send him down to OKC where he can throw on a regular schedule.
@scooper: I’m guessing Mrs. Kinsler would be going along to whatever fishing retreat the group would repair, too. I’m more certain, though, that Kinsler was kidding around.
@Jack Daddy: In regards to the lineup and why say Borbon would be playing, there is this: We in the media try to force answers from management. In the case of Ron Washington, he tries to answer. Sometimes, the first answer isn’t always the ultimate answer. That’s because sometimes it takes more time to digest all the information before making the ultimate decision.
Ok, scooper and becca have me thinking positive. Plenty of baseball left, and the bats look decent tonight.
@greg: he is only out there because neither of our long men are really available tonight. I’m guessing this was his between starts day to throw.
@Evan: You’re having, I’m Arbys…
I could go for a Roast Beef sandwich right about now.
Looks like the ump can’t see now. There goes that strike zone. Ha!
@ehren: Ok, what will the chant be?
Hey Evan, are the Rangers gonna face Price when the Rays come in to town this weekend?
is it safe to say that the ump needs to get his eyes checked?
TERRIBLE CALL!!!!!!!!!
Uh, oh! The camera caught Michael saying a bad word!
At least we already knew that the ump can’t see.
This team sure is a cussing team…even in good times. hah
@scooper: I have no idea. maybe something like…”I will hit, I will hit…”
hey there’s TD!
@evan: what was the distance on Kins’ HR?
That was a pretty pitch!
i was having some hot laundry action and missed the rangers not scoring in the 3rd. dangit.
What’s up! Been watching….had computer off.
“Good” game so far, as far as being interesting to watch….
“Bad” game so far, as far as Scooter Feldman.
but repeating things that have said before, young looks good at third and i’m happy that he’s there.
C’mon 1-2-3 inning. Feldman doesn’t need another high pitch count inning. Cowboy Bob just caught a bat. Ha!
@TD: well, he did get vlad the ranger impaler out twice!
I realize he (feldman) is making a nice recovery at this point, so don’t beat me up too bad
Good inning, Feldy. Let’s get those 3 runs back and then some!!!!
@td: fine. no wedgies. yet, anyways. but you’re on notice.
@becca: absolutely agree! i wonder if he felt kinda like a putz for making such a big deal about it now.
@becca: didn’t vlad have the double in the first?
@BECCA: haha…but this is not your grandfathers’ VLAD.
@evan, fair enough. I do like that Wash and JD are forthright. Good enough for me.
watching game upstairs with boys (we’re having a slump busting game watching party) so not by computer. can’t post much. need to get back up there – they may have the place on fire!!
Check your Tivo and see how many real shots off Feldman.?Lots of ground balls. A couple Davis usually gets.
Control not sharp, but they ain’t blasting im.
oh, maybe. for some reason i thought he struck out and the popped out. i’ll get on that. with the googling.
NELLIE!!!! There we go! God, I love watchin his HR swing.
get out of town! googling will wait! happy home run dance in my living room at the moment.
WOO HOO! And nice catch by the fan!
Cruz!!
TD that was a really nice catch. surprised that he didn’t take a header.
Ok – grabbed itouch so now I can post. Let’s get the record!
wedgie warning with the home run dance.
ok, i wasn’t right. vlad did double in the 1st to left. sorry. please feel free to label me a horrible play by play guy.
@Ehren: That’s the second soccer reference today. It’s finally catching on. Ha!
@Jack: we’ve got a long way to go to get the record again.
hat tip to you, irishp1
Is there any more embarassing out in baseball than being caught stealing? Seriously.
@IrishP1: it has a ways to go. you know it’s for real when we start breaking out the yellow and red cards. LOL
@IrishP1: Actually getting called out when stepping out of the batters box on a bunt is worse.
Horrible play by play gal!!! LOL
i think the balk is the most embarassing.
@becca: the balk is SO subjective though. I’d put the strikeout throw to first up there, especially if the batter doesn’t run.
Feldman at 80 pitches only one out in 4th.
6 in a row retired by Feldy. Maybe he has calmed down.
i think that’s why i think it’s so embarassing. i mean, half the time it’s such a shock it was called, that you know the pitcher has be sitting there thinking ‘really? REALLY?’
@Ehren – I didn’t post until 11 that night. We’re good!
Nice inning by SCOOTER.
Who is Alex Johnson? Never heard of him.
Does anyone else get nervous when Josh makes proclamations? Such as Chris Davis being back, the offense being back, Feldy being back, etc…I think its all going to fall apart as soon as he says it! Like a curse…
i feel better with josh saying it than knoxy making a proclamation
Nice!
Josh is just…..um, hopeful? Is that the word, I am trying to be nice….
I do like Josh as a play-by-play man, alot better than BECCA
Anybody know how to scroll directly to the bottom of the comments on an iPhone? It’s a real pain having to move the side cursor all the way down. Takes about a minute.
TD: Alex Johnson won the 1970 American League batting title while playing for the California Angels.
Balk with a runner on third is the most emabarassing imo..
@TD: Alex Johnson was a very talented hitter in the 1970s, who was kind of the forerunner to Milton Bradley. Legendary for being angry and sullen. Played for both the Rangers and Angels.
@TD: I don’t know. I think Becca is more fun.
Josh has the power of positive thinking. Josh might be a better play by play guy but i bet he doesn’t do the happy homer dance!
i’ll officially retire as a play by play typer…. that being said, great steal!
It is fun to watch Elvis on the bases.
steal home Andrus!!!
IT’S GONE!!! do the dance!!!
WOW!
Thank you, Marlon! Is everyone doing the Byrd?
holy homer dance with a byrd arm remix! exciting times in the living room, folks!
I’m doing the Byrd Dance!!!
EVAN: Where is he now? (Alex Johnson) Is he still in the game somewhere?
he walked Jones!?!?!
Saunders has 100 pitches w/ 2 outs in the 4th.
that’s a quick game for saunders. and i don’t even mind it one little bit.
nice remix!!!
RISP…c’mon!
Love the way Byrd stepped up last night and put it on his shoulders. Loved even more the way he has backed it up. That’s called stepping up, brutha. The man has my respect. That’s a team leader. Nice walk by my to set it up.
@evan: you are asking a very dangerous question. Please don’t jinx them!
I like him as a play-by-play guy too…he just makes me nervous!
I wish Saunders would stay…..he has been the medicine for our aching offense, he is our Dr. Conrad Murray.
andruw steals? i didn’t know he could even run full speed!
Darn, this is fun!
i don’t think jones can run at full speed. i think i saw in the dugout sucking in a tank of O2.
My baseball pants are lovig this.
I respect scocia and know he’s great. But am I the only one that (a) hates him and (b) thinks he looks like Bobby knight?
I think Andruw doesn’t want to see any of HIS playing time go to Borbon. He’s saying, “See, I can steal, too!”
i may have to pour myself some koolaid tonight. ’cause, yup, this is fun!
evan – please tell me at some point…Ian’s ridiculous look to pull EVERYTHING mentality is going to start being investigated/written about. His HR was great. When you look to pull, sometimes you’ll catch that middle-in fastball and hit a rope. But his second AB bloop to Tori came on a good pitch to hit, and bloops like he hit then…and chopping groundballs to the left side like in his 3rd AB are so common when a hitter gets in a left-shoulder-flying/pull everything mentality.
I think this is prob a result of the HR mentality that has obviously existed in Arlington for many yrs, but for whatever reason…the “pull mentality” isn’t being frowned upon by Wash or Rudy. Or…if it is, nobody is listening. To me – (regardless of any result tonight good or bad) Ian typifies our teams current offensive mentality (except for elvis), and I know I for one believe it to be irresponsible, fundamentally incorrect, and even borderline selfish. Love to hear your thoughts.
@JackDaddy: not only does he LOOK like Bobby Knight, but I think they are buds.
@jack daddy: i tool have baseball pants happiness. THIS is why i love summer! now if only julio borbon were julio franco…i’d be in heaven.
@becca: yup! I’m ready to drink the koolaid! But then again, I’ve been drinking it all year.
@Evan: Do you really think this is Kinsler’s mentality? To me his swing looks the same…if you look at replays of games he was lights out..it looks the same. Is this a timing thing? Isn’t that what it means with getting pop ups? Getting under the ball a little?
and i meant “too” not “tool”. that would have a totally different connotation.
@Jack Daddy – no way to skip to the bottom on an iPhone. Do the double thumb to scroll faster, but that’s all I’ve got.
Good job, Scooter!
question: when hamilton comes back, who’s in the outfield? both murphy and byrd look good. and they’d still want cruz’s bat, right? plus there’s this julio kid you may have heard about who’s been called up…
99 pitches thru 5. What do you think? Does he have another inning in him?
@becca: I really wish they would DH Josh. If you can’t talk him out of running into walls, then don’t put him in the position where he can. We need his bat much more than we need his defense.
Daang commenting on this itouch is whipping me. It’s a pain to refresh and scroll all the way back down. Help!
Can we now all acknowledge that as Ian goes this offense goes? I love him batting leadoff, but was probably a mistake not moving him to 3 while Josh was out.
Tune into hmwu later tonight for reasons #7 and 8 why I love kindler.
Forgot who said earlir to check TiVo to see that they really weren’t bashing feldman. Great observation. Spot on.
And then rotate the other 4 in the outfield.
Elvis having a great game! Love this KID!
Elvis is having an excellent game.
@Tom, Rangers Fan: Kinsler may end up being a streaky player, you never know. You still don’t have a full year on which to judge him because of injuries. The guy hit everything in sight in April and obviously clubs have made some adjustments to him since then. He’s a good hitter, with better-than-average power for a leadoff guy. If he hits .270 with a .340-.350 OBP and 30-35 homers, he’s going to end up in a run-producing spot somewhere and Julio Borbon will ascend to the leadoff spot. If Kinsler is a .270-30-100 guy, I don’t think anybody in the world would complain about him as a No. 5 or No. 6 hitter, but those numbers in the leadoff spot seem to be a waste of homers.
Speaking of…another steal.
Hey, anyone know the big ROOKIE of the YEAR competitors, other than him?
Damn, I love this kid!
@TD: Reimold (sp?) in Baltimore; Porcello in Detroit. I’m not sure about any others.
Oh Elvis…man he is exciting!
@rangers fan – with Ian, it’s tough to say. I do agree that his swing looks the exact same as when he is going well. I think it’s more a matter of timing. He said he had gotten away from looking fastball and instead was hitting “backwards”. His splits would support that – he’s killing lefties (a lefty uses the change to neutralize righties).
@cameron – thanks.
@SCOOPER: Thanks….
Wow, drive home and look what I miss. Go Elvis!
Looking at the boxscore and it cracks me up. 8 hits, 4 HRs, no doubles or triples. 4 singles. Why I find this funny I do not know, but I do.
@Auditor: Plus, you won the HR pool! Congrats!
it’s attack of Rick Renner’s HAIR!!!!!!!
tag just mentioned julio franco. this = my favorite night this week!
Looks like a good night in Rangertown.
TD: probably should put weiters of baltimore since ESPN ALWAYS talks about him.
@td – a few weeks ago I proclaimed that Elvis will win an MVP in the next 6yrs. Also that he will be the most popular ranger within 3 yrs. Finally, I think his power will increase in a similar fashion to pudge (steroid adjusted of course – a 12-15 hr guy). I’m with you. You can’t take your eyes off of him while he plays.
@ehren: is Weiters actually doing well? Rep is one thing, but he needs to produce.
plus the elvis smile, it’s good to see guys enjoying the game while they’re playing.
@scooper, Thanks!
To B. Money, it was a close race… sure you will get it next time!
he’s hittin .235. i hope they do base more on production than rep. i wasn’t to sure about longoria winning it but everyone was just blowing him up.
Sisters hitting .239. Did you know he was highschool teamate of smoaks? Pretty cool.
Sisters should have been wieters. Darn itouch key board.
Chode is batting!
how much fun would it be if knoxy came and did spots at random places. like, imagine going to the copy room of your office and knoxy’s there ready to interview you about your coallating copies and faxes.
these are things that i believe would add to my quality of life.
@Jack: i was just wondering about that.
@evan: I don’t think we are going to break that record.
Been happy with Eddie’s performances of late.
@ryansdad: yeah, he has been doing much better lately.
@becca: I refuse to believe that your quality of life is that bad!
Way to go, Murph! This is the most fun I’ve had in a long time! [What does that tell you about my "quality of life"?]
small ball is great and all, and yes, the chicks still dig it, but if this is how we have to beat the angels, well, ok. i’ll take it.
@scooper: i don’t think we are either.
Woot, Murph!!
@jack daddy: Amen, I agree…he looks so polished for a 20 year old. A natural….
check out the mass of humanity on the hill for that ball!!!!
@IrishP1-
I just got back to the board and saw your post.
It’s a lot more embarrassing to be picked off than thrown out stealing.
I always told my players “no guts, no glory. If you get thrown out, i sent you. If you steal it, you get the credit”.
You’re starting to sound like a guy who didn’t play very long.
Darn it, looks like Davis is going to wear the collar again tonight.
He did move the runner over at least…
@rangerfan: w/ a 9-3 lead, at least that collar is a little less obvious.
Hey folks! What a nice surprise to come home to!!
@beerguy: we’ve missed you! where have you been?
@scooper wins tend to lead to glossing over the bad I suppose. I am concerned that only one run came on something other than a home run.
@scooper: Oh man, I had a great night! I met a girl for a few pints and confessed some long time feelings! The reception was positive!
Good news all around
@scooper. Man you’re just like me. I haven’t been happy for 2 weeks.
@rangerfan: after the slump that we’ve been in, I’ll take runs any way we can get them. It’s not like I think that our problems are over, but it sure is nice to see 9 runs (ESPECIALLY against the Angels)!
@scooper: You’re 100% right.
Friggin O’Day is awesome.
@beerguy: That is reason for celebration! Congrats, buddy!
@becca: I know the record isn’t going to fall tonight. But I’ll settle for surpassing 319, the old mark.
@JackDaddy: I haven’t exactly been depressed, but I haven’t been having a lot of fun, either!
@rangerfan: you are right! Friggin O’Day IS awesome!
@beer guy: You have my congrats, too. I’ll live vicariously through you. And I will also chalk up another little comment. Cha-ching.
Holy moley, Byrd on fire tonight, eh??
@scooper: thanks
let’s see how it goes from here on out!
Somebody get a drug test up to St. Louis stat. Pujols is unconscience.
Boy, looks like we have left a lot on base tonight, which stinks, but also means we really got to their pitchers I guess? Saunders looks like he got lit up!
Nice, another strike out for O’Dizzle
I think that is an awesome managerial move. Always leave them wanting more O’day.
@beer guy – awesome!
@ranger fan Willis. Part of me hears you but if byrd’s balls were lower an hit the wall would you feel better? It’s sort of like the running back that breaks the long run and people say he padded his stats with the long run. Well, yeah, he had the run.
The good sign is they were hit toward center. That’s good plate approach.
@beerguy: the hardest part is over; you never even have a chance unless you take that first step. And too many people are too scared of rejection to even try. I am impressed and I absolutely tip my hat to you!
Why are we using our late-inning in close game guys up tonight?
@evan: don’t be silly, i’m not worried about records! that was scoops! but i am always happy with inside cornerians efforts during the live game blogs. especially since i can bug you guys with my baseball musings instead of my friends, which quite frankly, don’t really care that much.
Cuz Millwood’s going all nine tomorrow Rangers Fan. Gotta get em some work sometime.
Another scratch your head Wash move with CJ.
Can someone explain to me why we’re using O’day and now CJ with a 6 run lead?
@beerguy: we’ve scored 9. I’m not sure how many we’ve lob, but what that means to me is that we were getting runners ON BASE. we haven’t been doing much of that lately.
I like steak.
i’ll be there tomorrow and i hope above all hopes that milly goes all 9! gets a shut out! a perfect game! high hopes for the horse, i tell ya
@td: steak is fantastic.
I’m guessing that our late inning guys need some work. We haven’t had many saves lately. And we have an off day on Thursday, so they can pitch tomorrow if we need them and still have a day off.
@Jack Daddy: I agree, it was good approach by Byrd, and one of his HRs was more than a one run homer, which was really good. I’m just a jaded Rangers fan. The chicas do dig the long ball though, and I dig what the chicas dig.
This is also a very, very, very critical game for a lot of reasons. Not a good night to take any chances. If you have a better chance of getting an out with CJ, run him out there.
@scooper: definitely! Hopefully this is the start of a turn-around!
I’m thinking about going tomorrow night too…
I got a new jersey that I keep telling myself I will wear, but everytime I get ready to go to the game, I think “IT’S SO DAMN HOT” and wear a t-shirt…..
Never thought I would say that. Kudos to CJ in staying with it.
When Josh gets back I hope they DH him too. Who knows, maybe after the All Star break they realease Jones and Blalock and go with Josh at DH, and interchange the others like now. Maybe that is the grand scheme by bringing Borbon up at this time. My personal opinion is that Josh at DH is the only way to go for the remainder of the season. Also frrom a much earlier post, the competetion for playing time among the other outfielders could only help. Also, w/ injuries and such there is enough playing time for the others now that the Borbon promotion gives them come center field flexibility.
@Ryans Dad: I agree…..6 runs is ALOT, but it’s not 12 runs….let’s get the outs!
@Jericho: no way they release those two guys. They both could be used in trades, and Blalock’s salary is way too high to eat.
This has been a funny night. The part I enjoy the most is Elvis off and running (along with the recent bunting attempts over the past week or so— or since Evan grilled Wash over why Elvis does not bunt more). Loads of fun.
Down side for tonight is too many homers. I wish Crash Davis would have said “homers are fascist” rather than strike outs. That would have been a gold mine quote.
If something crazy were to happen like the Holland start earlier in the year that almost slipped away. There would be nothing but parents and girlfriends in the bleachers for the rest of the season.
Hat trick for Byrd?
@ryans dad: and dorks like me. i think i have tickets for 5-8 more games.
@Ryans Dad: A loss here would be the catastrophic moment that kills a season.
Ranger Fan Willis you are right. I guess I was simply thinking more about blowing them out of here—was not thinking return. You are right. I think the energy level would get a lot higher without those two guys.
I love the Rangers!
@auditor: I cannot believe that you really said, “Down side for tonight is too many homers.” Come on! Relax! Enjoy! After these last 2 months, how can we say that there is a “down side” to any offense?
Bad thing about living here is that it’s rare that you get a game live. Glad we’re scoring some tonight. Let’s enjoy laying a whoopin’ on the Angels…glad to get the frustration out…if only for a night.
Like you said earlier, scooper, homers are not always bad, just like they are not always good. The ones that fly out on a line to center are GOOD home runs. Ones that are skyed and catch the jet stream are mistakes that they got lucky on.
Td – I wore a tshirt Sunday for the first time instead of jersey and felt great! But breaking out the jersey this Sunday – my boys got me a custom Derek holland for fathers day. Debuted it tonight. It’s 1-0.
Q – who is the first half MVP? Isn’t it Kevin millwood in a run away? I’m not even sure who #2 is. Elvis? Young? Cj?
And this one has to be tough to take for the Angels. Joe Saunders is one of their studs (I don’t care what his stats in Arlington are). You KNOW that they didn’t expect to lose tonight. They are on a roll and feeling great about themselves. They wanted to pound us and ground us into the dirt.
well, the booing by the fans because the trainer came out isn’t necessarily the best move in sportsmanship…
and i fully agree on the jersey. i have one, shockingly it’s a julio franco one, and it is just so hot, it’s hard to wear much past May.
Can’t stand trainers!!
@ryansdad: Who was it that said, “I’d rather be lucky than good.”? Personally, I agree with him. And, right now, I’ll take offense any way I can get it!
Ewwww. Not good.
I think it was Beer Guy that said that.
TD’s first half MVP voting:
1. Millwood
2. Young
3. Cruz
4. CJ/FRANCISCO/O’DAY split the rest (Bullpen)
Well, Beer Guy is on a roll tonight, so he must be right!
@beerguy: Sorry for getting so serious on you! I’ll try to keep it light from here on out.
bases loaded, no outs….tying runner is in the hole….corrected 1 out.
THAT is the C.J. that we need!
Guess Napoli will move next time a pitch is inside.
@beerguy: chicks dig a guy with beer.
FRANK THE TANK here to save the day!! (??)
Frank Frank to the rescue!
Cj always makes it interesting
@evan: when is the last time that C.J. pitched before this?
it was more fun when it was 9-3
It’s Dejavu all over again.
yeah, this is getting un-fun real fast.
Ouch
@scooper: i usually hear those words in the bedroom
foul tips to the inner thigh are also not fun.
@scooper, the reason I consider it a down side is that it only encourages the “swing from the heels” approach to hitting. Not ever hit needs to go over the fence. I would take a few more doubles honestly.
Were we not having a discussion last night about how awful Rudy was and the lack of plate discipline? I enjoy an offensive outburst, just want it to be peppered with hits the other way and solid line drives into the gap. Nothing wrong with that.
@jb: poor, poor baby!
@auditor: i completely agree and as has been documented, i love the small ball. BUT this night has also had two 10-pitch at bats by murphy, several walks… i am just chalking it up to baby steps!
Nice!!!!
Hahaha, they dragon has been slayed. For tonight at least.
Welcome back frankfranc!
and then there’s that. happy victory everybody!
Thank you! Whew….
And Evan got his wish, we went over 319
Yikes, I step away for a few minutes thinking its all sewn up and then…let’s go Frank Frank!
@auditor: if a couple of those home runs were doubles, we very well may have lost this game. I’ll take the home runs. You are absolutely entitled to your opinion, but I will still take the HR’s.
What a roller coaster ride this game was, but I had fun. I LOVE THE RANGERS!!
BALLGAME!
Might I also say that I am quite impressed with Byrd’s wife. Not bad, not too bad at all.
But hey, what do I know. The Phillies and Rays both hit 3 HRs while only scoring 4 runs total.
But then again Pujols jacks another two.
Why did I not pick him up on my smallworld team? Why!!!!
Toby Harrah was one of my heroes growing up in Dallas. He was one of the few guys that wanted to be a Texas Ranger. He was actually happy to be traded back to the Rangers (from Cleveland I think). Mad props to you, Toby. Keep the Faith.
What does Pujols mean in Spanish?
@ryan’s dad – it means, “one bad raking s.o.b.”
@Jack, that is no lie!
the name pujols also makes me giggle too.
I hope it means something different than what it means in English.
1) Shame on those who were giving up on Feldman in the 2nd, and said they didn’t want to see him against the Angels next time. Aside from Millwood, he’s been most reliable starter (albeit, good for 6 innings–not up to Nolan’s standard). Why are Rangers’ fans so quick to trash players and not look at their body of work–or even at the situation. There were a lot of seeing eye hits and ground ball that usually would have been caught in the 2nd. Just cause it’s a hit, doesn’t mean you’re stinking it up.
2) Andrus had a great night on the bases, but, once again had a night where when he was good, he was very, very good–but when he was bad….He made his 12th error of the year (ahead of last year’s minor league pace of 18) on a routine play in the 9th. As I’ve said, he makes mind boggling plays I can’t remember a Ranger SS making, and then botches the easy one. He’s a 20 year old kid and will be a great one, but he is a work in progress.
3) CJ, after a lights out month, reminds of of his ability to bring drama tot he late innings.
