7:01: Last few minutes to get in the pool.
7:02: Since I can’t let an argument go, let’s at least compares apples-to-apples in the “Is-Kevin-Millwood-Lucky-Or-Good” debate. Let’s compare where hewas after 17 starts in 2007. At that point, he was 6-8 with a 5.50 ERA, had allowed 155 baserunners in 93 innings, a .291 opponents batting average and 3.66 walks per nine innings. This season, he’s 8-5 with a 2.80 ERA, has also allowed 155 baserunners in 119 innings, a .242 opponents batting average and perhaps, most significantly, 2.95 walks per nine innings. So, Millwood is actually walking fewer batters and allowing fewer baserunners per nine innings whe compared to where he was in 2007 at the same point. Have no idea what his stranded runners percentage was, but it’s pretty clear to me, he’s allowing fewer hits and walking fewer batters, so there is reason to believe that it’s not simply defense and luck, but also quality of pitches and an aggressive mentality.
7:09: To this point, reports about any of the Rangers’ Latin American signings have been attributed to “word around baseball” and nothing more. I can tell you now that club sources have indicated the team did indeed sign RHP-SS Jurickson Profar of Curacao. He will play shortstop in the minors. Also, OF Guillermo Pimentel, long rumored to be hidden by the Rangers, will not be signing with the team. According to numerous internet reports, he has signed with Seattle for $2 million. The Rangers won’t officially announce their Latin American signing class until all players have passed physicals and until Major League Baseball approves all the immigration and age information.
7:13: Great deek by Elvis Andrus and Ian Kinsler to double up Carl Crawford, who was running, head down, on Evan Longoria’s fly ball to center.
7:13: While Rangers officials won’t comment on reports Hicks Sports Group was given a multi-million dollar infusion of cash by Major League Baseball, club president Nolan Ryan said the ongoing search for a buyer is no impacting day-to-day operations on the field.
“I haven’t heard anything indicating we’re going to do anything differently,” Ryan said. “We’ve looked at our budgets, but we haven’t changed anything in terms of baseball operations of player development.”
The club laid off a little less than 10 percent of its front office staff last month, but limited cuts to business and administrative positions.
7:19: Just got word that Rafael Palmeiro, being inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame tonight in Lubbock, did a video interview with ESPN about steroids. I wouldn’t expect any new ground to be broken, but it might be worth a look on either SportsCenter or Baseball Tonight or both. I’ve treid to reach out to Palmeiro on numerous occasions over the last couple of years to get him to tell his story, but he’s maintained an extremely low profile.
7:52: From my Twitter page to you, my latest tweet: “Just wondering: Is Sarah Palin resigning as Alaska Gov. to make a bid for the Rangers on way to White House? Hey, it worked for George W.”
7:55: Really nice first trip through the lineup for Tommy Hunter. It was punctuated by a second consecutive strikeout of June AL Player of the Month B.J. Upton. It’s always more interesting to me to see how opponents fare against a pitcher a second and third trip through the order. Hunter certainly was effective the first time through, alloing a single to Carl Crawford (who was doubled off).
8:03: Michael Young has now taken nine walks in the club’s last 12 games. Young had walks ahead of Marlon Byrd’s two homers on Tuesday. The more he walks in that No. 2 hole, the more and more dangerous the offense will become. Eventually Ian Kinsler will cut down on the uppercut swings and go back to being a very dangerous hitter. And if when Josh Hamilton comes back, he’s got two guys on base ahead of him fairly regularly, he’s going to put up some crazy numbers.
8:19: Hank Blalock hits third homer in five at-bats. The guy is, and always has been, streaky. The significance of this is that Blalock seems to be in a hot streak after being out of the lineup for consecutive days earlier this week. The Rangers might be wise to ride him everyday whether vs. lefties or righties until he cools down. By the way, it was Blalock’s first career hit in eight at-bats against Kazmir. And it was his 88th home run in Rangers Ballpark, the fifth most all-time. More on what I think the Rangers should do with Blalock for an explosive Fourth July special tomorrow.
8:29: Holding out on you. Jeff Miller reported that Ron Washington indicated Josh Hamilton would have to show something more to be activated for Saturday’s game against Tampa Bay. GM Jon Daniels said before the game it would be Sunday at the earliest. If the Rangers aren’t satisfied with Saturday’s performance, it could push things back to Monday also. Hamilton grounded out sharply in the first inning for Oklahoma City at Iowa tonight. The game is only in the second inning after a rain delay.
8:33: B.J. Upton starts third trip the order with a lined single to left field on the first pitch of the at-bat. Andruw Jones threw home uneccessarily, which allowed Upton, the go-ahead runner, to move up to second.
8:53: Considering Marlon Byrd just made his second outstanding catch of the week to go with three homers, I think he gets a slight edge over Hank Blalock, who also has three homers this week, but hasn’t played the field for Rangers Player of the Week.
9:14: Hank Blalock’s second stolen base of the season is the Rangers’ 68th in 80 attempts, giving them a very impressive 85.0 success rate, which is now best in the AL. New York entered the day with an 84.2 percent success rate in 70 attempts.
9:17: Here is the link to ESPN print story on Rafael Palmeiro. Palmeiro maintains he received a tainted B-12 vitamin shot from a teammate.
9:19: Chris Davis’ strikeout for the second out of the inning – with a runner on third – is a critical issue. Davis now has 201 career strikeouts in 549 career at-bats over 155 games. The Rangers really needed that extra run. Davis is back down to .201. With Blalock swinging the bat well and Davis still struggling to show any long-term signs of progress, I’d suggest one other possibility for when Josh Hamilton returns: The Rangers could put Hamilton at DH for a while, move Blalock to first and send Davis down to work on making better contact. Still doesn’t leave a real reason for Julio Borbon to stay up here, unless it’s as an extra outfielder. But I’d say the time to make a decision on Davis that would allow him to potentially return and help the club sometime this year is fast approaching.
9:24: The Rangers have C.J. Wilson warming up and it looks like they are considering having him pitch in the seventh tonight. Just so long as everybody in the bullpen knows their roles.
9:27: Brandon Boggs has left Triple-A Oklahoma City’s game after catching a routine fly ball. According to an email, “it appeared Boggs was in extreme pain with something in his left arm.” No word on what happened, just that he crumpled to the ground after the catch. We will get you an update if we can.
9:37: Ian Kinsler has three fly ball outs tonight, a pop up to the first baseman and two fly balls to center. His batting average has now fallen below .260 to .259. More significant, his groundball-to-flyball percentage is .59-to-1 behind only Carlos Pena and David Ortiz. Those are supposed to be big power/big strikeout hitters. Kinsler is not. While he has good power, he’s a leadoff guy. Latest theory on Kinsler’s struggle at the plate is that his uppercut swing – as many have noted – has gotten more severe this year. Also, it appears he’s basically falling backwards with each swing. Doesn’t look like great weight distribution to me. Kinsler is better than this. A lot better. It appears Marlon Byrd and Hank Blalock are negotiating their ways out of long slumps. Now, the Rangers really need Kinsler to find his way out of one.
9:41: Another bank of lights has failed at Rangers Ballpark; this one is in the left field corner. It’s dark out in left, but the umpires are calling for the teams to play on.
Hey, Evan! Are you ready for another Rangers’ victory?
We’re finally wearing the HOME WHITES! I thought there had been some type of dry cleaning incident or something!
GO RANGERS….
How come people never make predictions about baseball games? Every football game seems to have 17 predictions on the score…
Here’s mine: Rangers 8, Rays 4
I’ll go Rangers 10, Rays 3
NICE!
EVAN: Is Borbon going to go back down for Hamilton or will there be another pitching shuffle?
beautiful job by Ian!
@TD: If nothing else changes, I expect Borbon to be sent back down when Hamilton returns, whether that is Sunday or Monday. Would seem like next chance for Borbon to play is Sunday, but as Jeff Miller reported, it’s now likely Hamilton will return Sunday.
Scooper, you like it when the other teams wear those red hats? I think it looks terrible…
@TD: no. I don’t like it when they don’t go with the uniforms. it just doesn’t look right to me.
Ahhh..ok, thanks Evan. I got to witness his first major league hit on Thursday! What a great game but I was dissapointed you didn’t invite me to the press box
haha.
Hunter is looking sharp again.
At the game right now. Scored gold club tickets. This is the way to watch a game when it is 105 outside. MY was safe, BTW. Tommy is throwing darts.
Hunter – 24 pitches thru 2 innings
Kazmir – 22 pitches in the 1st inning
Nice!
Pimental was the first casualty of Hicks financial problems. We couldn’t afford to sign Pimental and both of our top draft picks. Not the end of the world, but hopefully a white knight will step up and buy out Hicks majority interest sooner than later.
Have fun Dylan….have a cold one for me!
Yeah…Hunter is doing great, plus when TAG mentioned his minor league numbers it made me think that he really has his confidence up now…..Major League ready.
@gordosan: Wonder who it will be???
@TD – will do. I’ve already had three for me!
Kazmir – 45 pitches thru 2
Only have Gameday…did Davis hit it hard? Man, gotta have better situational hitting.
When we talked pitching prospects, no one really mentioned Hunter. He sure does look like he belongs in the big leagues.
True…making Kazmir work a lot…great job at that.
@Mike – semi-looping line drive
@MIR – it was a nice hit, actually. Another day it finds room to the wall but they had him played perfectly.
@Dylan: I’ll drink one for you if you drink one for me, OK?
I know it’s kind of late to predict the score, but give me Rangers 5 Rays 3.
@scooper – deal. Wait, if I drink for everyone how will I get home? I think you guys just want me to drunk post.
Thanks, Dylan and Scoop….B-Day is in August. I’m asking for the MLB package.
@Dylan: Darn! You figured it out!
Jones must have completely lost his wheels. That was a run lost.
I don’t want to jinx him but Hunter does look very solid. His stuff isn’t going to “wow” anyone, but he has good command and enough pitches that batters havent been able on anyone ptich.
Yeah… Go Tommy! He is got it going tonight!
HERE I COME BOYS!
I liked that bunt. I think Elvis learned by watching other teams do that to Holland.
The popout king strikes again! Ha….
DOMINANT performance so far….WOW.
I like what I’m seeing! Now if we would only start hitting.
Andruw is lucky he got to second, because he sure wasn’t hustling to first.
Hank strikes again! Way to trust your guy, Wash!
meant “gut”
@evan: are we going to see Teagarden catch Holland tomorrow?
Andrew Jones should DH or not play at all…
I won’t say FIRE WASH or stuff like that, but man…why bring Borbon up and put Jones in the outfield!?!?!?!?!
And no, I don’t mean Jones over Blalock, I mean Jones on the bench.
Great play by Kins!
@TD: I agree! DH or bench, period.
Whew! That inning could have gone a LOT worse!
Said it before and say it again AJ looks like manny with his trots to first and running in outfield.
@scooper: I believe Teagarden will catch on Saturday. Also need you to email me for HR pool instructions from earlier in the week.
Evan–3 random questions
1)Do the pitchers have a say in what jersey gets worn anymore? I know certain days they have no choice (like Saturday home games = red always). But it seems when Millwood pitches the Rangers are almost always wearing their “standard” unis and not the blue or the red.
2) What do Hank’s tattoos say on his forearms?
http://www1.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Los+Angeles+Angels+Anaheim+v+Texas+Rangers+hAmt8y6vT6Dl.jpg
3) Do you know what’s up with Elvis and Nellie going with one long sleeve under their jerseys? I’ve noticed them doing it for the last week or so.
@evan: I just e-mailed you.
Thank goodness Marlon doesn’t run like Andruw!
Way to go, Marlon!
@DAN: I am 90 percent sure that his tattoos are the names of his sons…..
@TD: at least one of them is – Trey
Aha! Lucas and Trey perhaps?
And Salty has his kids names, too. Remember when he first got here and he and Blalock were comparing tattoos of their kids’ names?
Wow, is that an early hook or is it just me?
yeah….you can see TREY in that picture pretty clearly.
And Wash shows again that he was “just kidding” when he said that he wouldn’t bring Jennings in with runners on base.
Didn’t remember that.
Also, looks like Elvis (and probably Nellie too) is just wearing a compression sleeve on his right arm, not a long sleeve shirt. You can see the swoosh.
@Dan: Wow, lots of fashion-related questions.
1. I think pitchers do still get a say unless there is a team directive about red herseys.
2. The names of his sons are definitely on his forearms (Trey and Lucas). There are other things on there. He’s got a scorpion on his back and the San Diego Skyline on a biceps. Lotsa staff.
3. Not sure about the one long sleeve look.
once you know what it is, I mean. And if you can read OLD ENGLISH, lol.
Jennings in with men on base again. Covering my eyes.
@dan: you are right about the compression sleeves on their throwing arms.
@scooper, Dan: Yes, those one long sleeves are compression sleeves usually used to keep the arm warm. Cruz is wearing his on his left arm, however, not on his right.
@dan: yeah, it was Salty’s very first game. I want to say that he got here after the trade in the middle of a game. They were showing him in the dugout for the first time he met his teammates. He and Blalock were smiling and comparing forearm tattoos of their kids’ names.
Relax DC…he came through! I was worried myself!
Big treat for me tonight. Get to watch Rangers on the tube. I don’t remember Hunter having a changeup. It’s really made him more effective. Salty looks terrible. Davis looked terrible striking out in fifth. Yikes. Go Rangers.
If he keeps on pitching like that, I wouldn’t care if he came in with the bases loaded!
Excellent job by Jennings, and although Hunter won’t get credit for an “official” quality start, it was definitely quality in my book!
I have to add that Michael Young doesn’t look locked in at the plate. They are making Kazmir work overall, though, and that’s a good thing.
@evan: thanks for the correction. I obviously wasn’t paying very close attention to Nellie’s sleeve.
Great start….looks like he will be keeping Harrison’s spot if he keeps this up.
I can’t really say this with a straight face after bagging on Hank so bad, but he is LOCKED IN right now…great AB.
Guess Jennings is figuring out how to pitch in relief.
If he would only get on a roll like at the end of last year ….
At least when Davis strikes out, he can’t hit into a double play.
Don’t understand why CD has so much trouble with fastballs.
Whoever Balfour is….he was throwing the cheese!
Jason Jennings for Rangers Hall of Fame.
How many think Pujols is and always has been clean?
lol TD weren’t you the one cringing with me earlier.
OH NO, a light delay?
Guilty DC….haha.
And I think Big Albert is clean….he is the ANTI-AROD in every way.
I REALLY, REALLY hope that Albert is clean. I’ve never heard his name associated with anything and he hits enough home runs that we’d hear if it was, I think.
@evan: that doesn’t sound good about Boggs.
ANGELS losing 5-0!!
Did Hicks forget to pay the light bill?
Hamilton 0-4 tonight not good he’s hitting .150 so far.
@Evan … What are the chances anyone other than Julio Borbon gets sent down or DFA’d when Josh gets activated?
OK, this looks like the REAL Frankie.
Big strikeout. Hope Frank will show Wash’s faith in him is justified.
@David: I think it’s Borbon, but would not rule out the possibility the Rangers could send Chris Davis down for some tutoring. But I just can’t see what good Borbon would do with no real playing time.
Life is good.
Nice game! My score prediction was terribly off….Hope the Oriole’s can hold that lead and we can be tied for first tomorrow!
The middle of the lineup pulls it out. Nice game all around.
@TD: my score prediction was way off, too.
