Rangers 3 3 1 0 2 1 0 1 x 12

7:10: If you didn’t get in the pool, well, it’s just too late now. Sorry.

7:18: Well, I wouldn’t exactly call it a mix of pitches that Derek Holland threw in the first. He started with 14 consecutive fastballs before throwing a changeup up Evan Longoria for a ball. But on the only other offspeed pitch he threw – a 1-and-0 breaking ball to Carlos Pena – he got a hard grounder to end the inning. He has thrown fastballs on 16 of his 18 pitches.

7:24: In case, you haven’t read it, I’ve got some opinions to share on playing time for Hank Blalock, Andruw Jones and Chris Davis.

7:38: Triple-A Oklahoma City’s game against Omaha is being delayed by rain at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. The game has not started, but Josh Hamilton is apparently going to DH tonight if the game is played. He was going to play center, but the Rangers would probably not want him running on slick grass with still-tight abdominal muscles.

Manager Ron Washington said he still isn’t sure that Hamilton will return before the club goes to Anaheim for a series against the Angels. Hamilton is 2-for-20 at Frisco and Oklahoma City since Monday.

“His at-bats were better last night [Hamilton was 0-for-4], but still not quite there yet,” manager Ron Washington said. “We want him to get his timing right and for him to be able to really help us when he comes back. ”

7:47: Seeing Michael Young walk in the first inning reminded me of how his season seems to change after his son’s birthday every year. Mateo was born on June 22, 2005. Young went on to hit .342 over the remainder of that season to win the AL batting title. But it seems to happen every year. From June 22 until the end of the year, he was a .318 hitter with a .370 OBP. This year: He’s hitting .308 with a .425 OBP since the big day.

7:51: Um, make that .325 with a .438 OBP for tYoung since June 22 this year. Bases-loaded double brings home three more runs.

7:56: Michael Young’s double was the 300th of his career, making him the fourth Rangers double up 300 times. He’s 20 behind Juan Gonzalez for third and 45 away from breaking the club record of 344 held by Ivan Rodriguez.

8:05: Holland starting second turn through the rotation. This is where mixing pitches really gets interesting. Threw only five offspeed/breaking pitches in first trip through lineup. First batter he saw twice was B.J. Upton, who has seen 10 fastballs in his two trips to the plate tonight. He looked at four of them the second time up for a walk.

8:12: According to Baseball America, the Rangers have signed switching-hitting SS Luis Sardinas from Venezuela. The rumored bonus is believed to be at least $1 million. Rangers sources confirmed for me this week they did spend in excess of $1 million for a Latin American free agent, but did not divulge who.

8:24: I just gotta say it, in the spirit of true patriotism: Bite it, Kobayashi!

8:29: Still delayed in Oklahoma City. … The severity of Brandon Boggs dislocated left shoulder won’t be known until Monday when he comes to Dallas to see orthopedist Dr. Keith Meister. Boggs has had some issues, due to past football injuries, with both shoulders popping out place. But it was apparently a strange and painful sight. Boggs reached up for a routine fly ball, caught it, and as his left arm recoiled slightly during the catch, the shoulder popped out again.

8:32: Three more fastballs from Holland to start the fifth. Two hits for Rays.

8:34: Sequence to Dioner Navarro: Fastball, Fastball, Change, Fastball. The last pitch was hit for a homer. Holland has thrown 62 pitches and I’d estimate he’s still at 70-75 percent fastballs.

8:47: Nelson Cruz homers with one out in the fifth, making him first Ranger to reach 20 this season.

9:17: Oklahoma City has been rained out and the Rangers have already announced that Josh Hamilton will play in Oklahoma City again on Sunday. So, Monday is the earliest he would return to the lineup.

9:54: Chris Davis has entered the game at third base since it is a blowout. Wonder if he would play third base at Oklahoma City if he ends up getting sent down sometime in the next week.

    @all: Happy Fourth from Reno

  • becca

happy 4th from dallas. it’s hot.

  • Mike in Reno

Let’s hope the Rangers are, too.

  • becca

evan, do people get you and evan longoria mixed up a lot?

  • Dr Pepper presents Batface McGee

Still waiting for Wonderboy;s first offspeed pitch…

  • DC

Someone remind Holland and Teagarden to throw more than fastballs.

  • DC

    Happy 4th to all.

  • Dr Pepper presents Batface McGee

    Ask, and you shall receive…

  • adiosmofo

Well, i was about to say there’s a little sign of things to come for those who want to see Hank more at first base. But, he got away with it.

  • adiosmofo

You gotta love the Holland vs Price matchup

  • obagain

    Hey guys, happy 4th.

  • Bob Brower

can someone explain to me why Michael Young would not make an excellent leadoff hitter? I’m surprised it hasn’t come up before, particularly with Ian’s continued struggles. What am I missing?

  • obagain

He is not very good on the bases, you normally want someone who can steal to start the game.

  • Mike in Reno

Watching on Gameday….looks like a pretty small strike zone…true or not?

  • The Beer Guy

    Good patience at the plate!

  • obagain

Early lead, looks like price didnt bring his a game.

  • Bob Brower

    Boom goes the dynamite

  • The Beer Guy

    KABOOM!

  • adiosmofo

Speed is not that big-of-deal out of the leadoff spot– getting on base, hitting for avg, and making the pitcher work are.

MY has adequate speed. I’ve long believed he should be in the leadoff spot.

  • DC

    MY to slow for leadoff.

  • DC

    OKC in rain delay again.

  • Bob Brower

Brian Downing hit leadoff when I was playing

  • The Beer Guy

I think it depends on what kind of game the team plays. If they tend to be speed-oriented, lots of hit-and-runs, SBs, sac bunts, aggressive base running, then I think speed at the top is important. Not sure we are that way, in the sense that the Angels are, for instance…Also think it’s more important for NL teams to have a speedster leading off.

  • obagain

adios, speed is huge for the leadoff hitter.
Making the pitcher work and then drive him crazy on the bases.

  • DC

Strike zone is looking fluid tonight.

  • obagain

With smoak getting promoted today, how long before moreland and smith join him?

  • adiosmofo

Nope, not in the AL it’s not.

And making the pitcher works is mutually exclusive from speed. And it’s MY we’re talking about here, not Vlad or something. His speed is decent enough, esp with the way he handles the bat.

  • Jack Daddy

    @evan,

any word on Hamilton for tomorrow? Josh L. mentioned that it now looks like Monday. Taking the boys tomorrow (thanks to the power outage in the Dodger game) and they were hoping to see Josh.

  • obagain

I doubt josh will be back til next week some time.
His timing is not good right now.

  • Jack Daddy

biggest reason why MY is not a leadoff hitter – over the last 6 years he has one of the highest avgs with RISP (other than this year, oddly enough). It’s why I also think he is a waste in #2 hole. Though Evan pointed out that his numbers are much better at 2 than 3. Makes me wonder whether he isn’t best suited for 5. However, moving from 2 to 5 would subtract maybe 30-50 ABs from him over the course of the season. So I suppose #2 it is.

  • adiosmofo

yeah, MY’s a bit of a tweener with the bat– prob with him at 3 or 5 is the lack of power. Prob with him at #1 is a perceived lack of speed. So, yep, #2 it is.

The only reason I’d suggest him at leadoff is until Ian gets it together. Ian is certainly looking more like 5 to me than a leadoff hitter this year.

  • obagain

I would love to see elvis in the top spot, see how he handles it.

  • Bob Brower

Loving the walks. Come on Ian, take a strike here

  • Evan Grant

NOTE: It doesn’t sound like he’s coming back for Sunday’s game.

  • DC

Hamilton only has one hit at OKC so far.

  • Bob Brower

I think putting Elvis in the top spot is setting him up to fail.

Ian’s 9 pitch at-bat is great to see.

  • obagain

Very good AB for kins there.

  • adiosmofo

And i’m pretty certain there is no one I’d like to see more with the bases loaded than MY.

    Irony.

  • adiosmofo

    awesomeness

  • scooper

    3-run double!!!

  • obagain

They said putting him at AA while only 19 was setting him up to fail.
They said skipping AAA was setting him up to fail.
They said he would be great defensively but would struggle offensively in the majors.
He seems to thrive in pressure situations, exactly what you want in a leadoff guy.

  • DC

I thought Elvis has looked the best when batting 2nd just not sure numbers agree or not.

  • The Beer Guy

    Hoo yah!

  • Evan Grant

@DC: Hamilton was 1-for-4 at Frisco and is 1-for-16 at OKC.

  • Tom B

The bats are out tonight or is it Price and his control?

  • scooper

That’s the way to knock Price out early!

  • Bob Brower

Just let him be a major league rookie. This is not AA or AAA. Hey, and in this lineup, we need the bottom of the order to hit.

If he’s destined to be a top of the order hitter, he’ll end up there.

  • obagain

For all the guys that hate on holland, this is supposed to be the best player in the minors we are torching tonight.
It is a learning process and some lessons are not much fun but you have to go thru them.

  • Tom B

If we looked only at Elvis’ errors we would assume he is not ready for SS but we have seen as many plays no one else would have gotten to. Sometimes numbers don’t tell it all.

  • The Beer Guy

It would be very interesting to know whether Rays Nation is going ballistic on their blogs. “OMG Price sucks!!”…”Send this fool down!!” etc. Of course, they shouldn’t be, but just wondering if other teams have fans like ours ;)

  • adiosmofo

Wash seems hell-bent in keeping Ian at the top. So it’s moot anyway.

  • obagain
  • adiosmofo

If the rotation had stayed healthy and Holland been allowed to stay on-plan out of the bullpen, I think his results would be much different.

With his fastball, he’s plus out of the pen, but obviously still learning as a starter.

  • Jack Daddy

    separated at birth:

    David Price – Tim Duncan?

  • DC

@ JD he’s duncans lil brother.

  • scooper

@obagain: you are right. at least we’re not the only ones who are too impatient with young guys!

  • Jack Daddy

    adiosmofo- agreed.

But look at his starts – he’s scuffed and clawed and managed to keep us in every game except for the Padres, and even there he hung into the 5th or 6th and KOed 8. The guy is a tremendous competitor. Once he refines the change/breaking ball, he’ll be a #1,#2 starter. I like him learning in the rotation. Don’t want him learning in 2010 here. Hunter too.

  • DC

Teagarden needs to make Holland throw all his pitches.

  • scooper

@jackdaddy: i agree. they need to do their learning this year.

  • The Beer Guy

@obagain: Thanks for finding that. Pretty interesting, eh? I say sometimes non-fans offer a more sober perspective! Ranger fans = Price will be ok, give him time….Rays fans = Price sucks! He will never cut it!

  • obagain

I want holland in the rotation pitching every 5th day and learing how to pitch up here.
If he was getting shelled every game you might put him back in the pen but as long he is keeping you in games you let him start.

  • Jack Daddy

this is where he needs to be bring the slider/change to Longoria with 2 Ks.

  • Jack Daddy

how did longoria not swing at that 1-2 slider? that was a nice one

  • Jack Daddy

    nice!!!!

btw, they are 2-0 with me wearing the Father’s Day Holland jersey. going for 3-0 tonight.

  • Jack Daddy

Listen – i think Salty has been AMAZING this year behind the plate and his development has been to me, one of the great stories of the 1st half. BUT, I would really like to see TT work with Holland for the next few starts.

  • obagain

Could be a huge game brewing in frisco.
Smith is 2-3 with 6 RBI, in the 3rd inning!

  • scooper

maybe it wasn’t just price … maybe the bats are coming alive.

  • Jack Daddy

Cormier’s “stuff” looks very similar to Jennings’ out there. Very similar sliders and delivery.

  • Jack Daddy

obagain – i’m very intrigued by smith and mooreland. they’re conservative advancement (just now at AA) somewhat runs contrary to our usual agressiveness on promotions. Boy they can rake.

Nice AB by TT. Very nice.

  • Jack Daddy

question – is the rangers game on in your house TOO MUCH, when your 3 year old says, from the back seat of your car (unprompted):

    “Texas Rangers, Built for Fun”.

  • obagain

That should be a learning AB for elvis, he normally goes the other way to get the run in.

  • The Beer Guy

Is Lance Cormier related to retired pitcher Rheal Cormier?

  • obagain

Part of moreland is they tried to make him a pitcher last year, he is more valuable with his bat but he had no position but is a great athelete.
I think they finally decided to just let him hit and worry about how to get him in the majors later.
I can see smith and moreland as big trade chips.

  • adiosmofo

Wow, that was actually a very cool Jim Knox segment

  • scooper

Holland likes pitching with a lead. He’s looking good.

  • Fred

Evan, I saw that Jake Brigham left after 1 batter in the 3rd after 1 hit & 4 K’s @ Hickory. Can you find out if he got hurt?

  • obagain

If you read more on that rays blog they are also wanting to get rid of longoria. :)

  • scooper

@obagain: Are they getting on to Longoria as bad as we are on Kins? Apparently, Longoria had a big April and hasn’t done a whole lot since. Sound familiar?

  • obagain

Fred, in the box it just shows a pitching change, not an injury change.
In hickory they have some strange games because they have more pitchers than innings to pitch so you see some strange substititions like that.

  • obagain

Worse, they are talking about him not running out hits and trying to hit a home run every ab, sound familiar? :)

  • Jack Daddy

not happy with the rays flipping Garza for Niemann tomorrow. Garza is the kind of pitcher that gives us fits.

Last year he beat us twice (8 IP, 4 hits, complete game, 2 hitter) and we beat him once (4 IP, 3ERs)

  • DC

Bad Bad Bad pitch by Holland.

  • Bob Brower

I was about to switch over to “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”, but guess I’ll have to hang on a while.

Right in the center of the plate with another fastball. This is the ‘learning’ part that can be painful

  • James

Throwing a pitch right down the gut at 1-2 is something that he should have “learned” long before he got to the Bigs.

  • The Beer Guy

Derek Holland’s PDA: “Note to self, do not throw pitches straight down the middle of the plate.”

  • obagain

I am sure he wasnt trying to throw it there, it was a mistake and I am sure he will learn from it.

  • scooper

the bottom of the order got DH, but he is getting the top of the order.

  • scooper

OK, I should have kept my comments to myself.

  • adiosmofo

Would be awesome if Harry gets healthy and Hunter keeps doing what he’s doing, because Derek is exectly what we need in 7th-8th inning out of the pen.

  • scooper

the location on that second pitch to pena was perfect.

  • adiosmofo

    Attaboy

  • obagain

Holland is a starter, I would not put him back in the pen.

  • scooper

I agree. We need to keep running him out there and letting him learn.

  • Bob Brower

I think its hilarious that TAG doesn’t think (not sure, but thinks) he never got to have lunch with Toby Harrah and Ruben Sierra, together

  • The Beer Guy

Good gut check there by Holland! Yeah I am with you all on keeping him in the rotation.

  • DC

Holland better not go back to the pen. He needs to stay right where he is rather have an ace starting pitcher than a 7th 8th inning guy.

  • obagain

Tim smith walks with the bases loaded for his 7th RBI, they are in the 4th inning. :)

  • adiosmofo

Holland is a starter, but not a good one, yet. Second time around gives him fits, he still ‘learns’ when he works out of the pen, and the team needs an arm like his out of the pen.

    Boom for Nellie

  • Bob Brower

Just silly to call Holland an ace. He might become one someday, but has a long, long way to go.

  • obagain

Talk about a terrible performance, in frisco, the springfield pitcher has thrown 33 pitches, 9 strikes and 24 balls and has now walked in 2 runs.

  • The Beer Guy

Little home-field advantage for us there, or away-field disadvantage for Upton!

  • scooper

I can only speak for myself, but I think of him as a young starter who needs to stay in the rotation and learn. He may become an ace (I think he will), but he is a long ways away. Look at Matt Cain – it took him a couple of years before he finally put it all together this year. And that is typical of even the really good pitchers.

  • Bob Brower

Anyone catch who is reading this speech?

  • obagain

He has ace potential, not there yet.
We have AJ Murray, moscoso and feliz along with el duque pitching great and could be called up soon.

  • scooper

    Pete O’Brien

  • Bob Brower

No kidding? I played with Pete.

  • DC

It would set DH back to finish the year in the pen. He needs to learn how to get through the lineups multiple times. Out of the pen he would use his FB 90% on the time.

  • adiosmofo

    Love me some Pete O

  • Jack Daddy

disappointed with the 1-2 pitch to navarro that he hit out. didn’t need to pound FB there. the slider and curve and change have actually looked decent and that’s when you want to test it.

Loved the 1st and last pitch to Pena.

Evan is dead on – 70-75% range on FB is too high. Needs to be 55-65%.

BBTiA has a great piece on fastball velocity and the correlation with effectiveness. They tied it to frequency of using fastball vs. secondary stuff.

Here are 2 paragraps that bang it home and they scream Derek Holland (as a 22 year old rookie)

“Of the 21 pitchers with fastball velocities above 91 mph who were ranked outside the top 30 in FIP in 2008, the majority have relatively little major league experience. Matt Garza, Ricky Nolasco, Felix Hernandez, Ubaldo Jimenez, Justin Verlander, Matt Cain, Manny Parra, Nick Blackburn, Ian Snell, Johnny Cueto, and Edwin Jackson are presumably still trying to figure out how to be effective against major league hitters. Consistent with that notion, Hernandez, Jimenez, Verlander, Cueto, and Jackson are all having very good 2009 campaigns.

Interestingly, there is not a lot of variance in pitch use by any of the groups of pitchers. Major league pitchers tend to average 58 percent fastballs, 30 percent breaking balls, and 12 percent change-ups regardless of whether they are top- or back-of-the-rotation types. An exception is the group of pitchers with fastballs that average greater than 91 mph but whose FIPs place them in the bottom half of pitchers. The high-velocity, ineffective pitchers averaged 72 percent fastballs in 2008, suggesting that ineffective secondary pitches are likely limiting their ability to succeed.”

They finish with a summary of the Rangers pitchers. Here is what they say about Holland:

“Of the current Rangers starters, Derek Holland (93.2 mph), Vicente Padilla (91.9 mph), Scott Feldman (91.0 mph), and Matt Harrison (91.0 mph) are all averaging at least 91 mph on their fastballs.

    (1) Holland’s fastball ranks in the top 20 among starters in the majors. He is using his fastball too much (75 percent), so developing his slider and change-up will likely be the key to becoming the top-of-the-rotation type that his fastball suggests that he can be.”

  • obagain

Degerman walked in another run before finally getting pulled but the bases are loaded with no outs, frisco is already up 15-3.

  • adiosmofo

I don’t get how it would be a setback, since the plan for him when he was called up was to work out of the pen for the year.

  • Jack Daddy
  • Bob Brower

    Bradford just bowled one

  • Bob Brower

I think its now safe to forget Sarah Marshall. I suspect DH gets one more inning and we see Grilli.

  • The Beer Guy

@Bob Brower: (Assuming you are the real Bob Brower!), I didn’t remember that you played for the Yankees in 89, just saw that on your stats. What was that like? Must have been pretty interesting, they had a collection of characters eh?

  • DC

Adios read what Jack Daddy just posted in the pen he wouldn’t need his secondary pitches as much there for not developing as quickly.

  • obagain

Adios, the plan was to get him in the pen and settle in before moving to the rotation to finish the year, not stay in the pen all year.

  • Jack Daddy

holland needs to go out there every 5th day. This IS THEY GUY. This is a guy that can take the rock in games 1 and 4 of a series. We need to be patient and take this development. This isn’t a JAG (just a guy). This season is not the ultimate goal, and he’s not harming us anyway.

We don’t even know what Harrison’s results with the nerve doctor were. Harrision’s era is almost higher than Holland’s and when you take out his two ChiSox starts, it’s much higher. Holly is giving up one HR a game that is inflating his era. You take out the Navarro and Berkmank 3 run bombs and its much lower.

  • Fred

    Hey, Fred–
Could you please add an initial or a number, or something so folks don’t get us confused?
    Thanks.

  • Jack Daddy

@bob brower – if that is really you and not your ghost, I remember seeing your inside the park homerun (in Oak, I believe).

Remember how JJ said Troy Aikman looked good in the shower and we all giggled but knew what he was trying to say? Bob Brower looked AWESOME in a baseball uni. Just looked like a ball player.

  • The Beer Guy

@Jack Daddy: Thanks for the link, very interesting read

  • scooper

@adios: as stated by DC, out of the pen in short stretches, he would be basically using his fastball. He needs to develop his secondary pitches and learn how to get through a lineup 2 and 3 times. Pitching out of the ‘pen, he would not develop the skills that he needs to become an effective starter.

  • easyeddie

Love watching this kid pitch, even with the learning process he’s going trough.

  • DC

92 pitches for Holland. One more inning?

  • adiosmofo

We’ll see. At some point you have to think of the needs of your first place team

  • easyeddie

    through, not trough

  • scooper

92 pitches – does wash let Holland go back out for the 7th?

  • scooper

I say let him start the 7th and see what happens.

  • DC

I dont mind saying i love Hollands potential and would almost bet my salary he becomes an ace.

  • Jack Daddy

terrific 6th inning. the kid is a strike throwing warrior. Neither starter had any feel for their offspeed and breaking balls early. Look which one scuffed and clawed his way to the finish? Not the over-all #1 pick.

The guy has a filthy fastball that runs, plus potential on his secondary stuff and is a competitor. Let’s let the guy pitch every 5 days so next year we can remove the “potential” in the prior sentence.

I LOVE this kid. Love him, love him, love him.

  • The Beer Guy

    Put him back out there!

  • obagain

I agree, let him start the 7th but on a short leash.

  • scooper

@jackdaddy: I agree with everything you just said!

  • The Beer Guy

Baltimore with an early 3-0 lead over LA, top 3rd

  • DC

    I second that Jack Daddy.

  • obagain

Sole posession of first would be great, we had out bad stretch and stayed close enough to regain the lead.

  • scooper

It sure is nice to see some offense!

  • The Beer Guy

@Josh Lewin: I beat your Angels score update! (At least I think I did, but I can never tell with this dang MLB.com feed delay)

  • scooper

I don’t think our offense could get any worse than it was. It is nice to see that we weathered the storm and are still in good shape.

  • DC

So much for Hanks hot streak.

  • easyeddie

92 pitches is enough, let him end on a good note and let Jennings finish it out.

  • adiosmofo

with a 6 run lead and < 100 pitches, roll him out there for another inning. let grilli clean up the 8th and 9th

  • Jack Daddy

@adiosmofo – I hear you, but he’s not walking batters (not scared) and he’s keeping us in all the games. Here are his starts after Houston (which we won):

    IP H ER BB Ks
    05/27 NYY 5.0 10 5 2 5
    06/06 BOS 4.2 6 4 2 5
    06/14 LA 5.0 5 4 4 2
    06/20 SF 7.0 4 1 1 5
    06/27 SD 5.2 13 6 1 8

The NYY and SD starts were ROUGH, and he still made it past 5 and struck out more than a batter per inning. He matched Lester through 4 and got a bit rattled in the 5th, but it didn’t matter what he did that night. He matched Cain pitch for pitch.

This is our meal ticket. This isn’t Tommy Hunter or Scott Feldman or McCarthey or Harrison (all nice arms). This isn’t a “nice” arm. This is a bona fide, ace in the making, carry a team in October bad dude. Don’t be fooled by the “Opey” facade.

My point, is other than the SD game, he didn’t “cost” us any of those games.

  • The Beer Guy

Mathis needs some work doesn’t he?

  • scooper

    Jennings isn’t available today.

  • adiosmofo

    we all were wrong

  • Evan Grant

9:17: Oklahoma City has been rained out and the Rangers have already announced that Josh Hamilton will play in Oklahoma City again on Sunday. So, Monday is the earliest he would return to the lineup.

  • easyeddie

@scooper – that explains Grilli – didn’t realize Jennings wasn’t available. Too bad – I think is stuff would be a good complement to DH’s….

  • DC

    OKC rained out tonight.

  • scooper

Grilli could turn out to be almost as good a find as O’Day.

  • adiosmofo

@JD– i prefaced my comment with if Harry gets healthy and Hunter keeps doing what he’s doing (not to mention everyone else staying healthy), then Holland to the pen makes sense b/c his arm is what that pen needs.

With all those ifs, having too many quality, healthy starters would be nice problem to have, not matter who ends up in the pen.

I do think at some point we have to admit we are in fact playing for this year.

  • scooper

Sure, we are playing to win this year, but not at the expense of next year. We need to continue to let our young guys play. We’ve gotten this far with them and we need to see how far they will take us. NO RENTALS!

  • DC

Play for this year but dont hurt the future by doing so.

  • adiosmofo

not talking about rentals or trades, just putting players in position that maximizes our chance of reaching the playoffs this year

  • obagain

smith has a challenger, whittleman has 2 hr and 6 rbi.
They are in the 6th so each should get 1-2 more ab.

  • scooper

Holland needs to stay in the rotation. He still has a lot to learn and he needs to learn as much as he can this year. Others can handle the ‘pen duties.

  • Evan Grant

@scooper: You don’t need to worry about rentals this year. The Rangers simply can’t afford to take on any salary, so that’s going to significantly impact their ability to make a big deal.

  • DC

adious Holland is throwing good enough in rotation and growing. The pen WILL set him back why screw the future up when theres no real need.

  • Rockwall Tim

I get the feeling the Rangers will probably bring Hamilton back very soon whether Josh has demonstrated readiness or not. I don’t really blame them; I probably would, too. But let’s not get our hopes up too high for some sort of breakout comeback.

  • scooper

@evan: that’s fine with me! unless we were able to get a true “ace” (which we obviously can’t afford anyway), I’m fine with the guys we have.

  • scooper

or the ones we can bring up.

  • adiosmofo

Holland may stay in the rotation and maybe he should, but being a bullpen pitcher as a rookie does not “screw the future up”

  • DC

I hope they dont make a trade unless it’s to get rid of hank, aj or eddie.Play to win and for the future.

  • obagain

Rockwall. why rush him back when the offense is finally coming around?
Let him get his timing down and get fully healthy before we bring him back.

  • Fred

Just catching up on all the Holland discussion. My 2 cents:
Send him out every 5th day and let him learn. Agree on the obvious: needs to develop his off speed stuff, gain confidence in it and use it to set up the FB.

  • scooper

In Holland’s case, it would slow down the process. He’s doing fine; leave him in the rotation.

  • scooper

@obagain: I agree completely! If the offense were still struggling, it might be a different matter.

  • DC

But it would slow down his development and slow down the future. When theres no real need for him in the pen.

  • scooper

whoever it was who said Mathis needed some work was right.

  • obagain

Letting holland learn and staying in the lead is a great situation.
Look at boston, they have bucholz in the minors but cant afford to bring him up and take his lumps because they would drop out of the race, we are lucky to be in this situation.

  • The Beer Guy

@scooper: I’ll take credit for that ;) Should let him finish it out here.

  • scooper

    @beerguy: I agree. How’s your girl?

  • DC

Blaze’s Butler burns Nuts……… Do you think that headline writer went home smiling?

  • scooper

@DC: I’m sure whoever it was is quite proud of themselves.

  • Chris Hartman

Only thing better than the Rangers in first on the 4th of July is the Rangers in first after 162 games….

  • Jack Daddy

    @Evan,

Speaking of Harrison – what were the results of his visit Monday with the neurologist? Weird that we’ve heard nothing (or even weired if there was an announcement and I missed it – I was dead slow at work this week and read EVERYTHING printed on the Rangers on the www or otherwise!).

  • The Beer Guy

@scooper: I dunno, she’s been incommunicado the last few days…not sure if we’re playing that whole “3 day wait” thing, or if she changed her mind!

  • Jack Daddy

@Evan – one more, not too familiar with the Rays’ pen. What did tonight do to the Rays pen for tomorrow?

How does the Rangers color commentator (and a former G.M.) not know that their top prospect just got promoting to AAA? I love Poo Poo -surely he’s kidding.

  • scooper

Josh and TAG were awful slow mentioning Smoak’s promotion. Evan really scooped them!

  • Jack Daddy

Nice AB by Hank. He looks locked in right now.

  • scooper

@beerguy: think positive! she’s just been really busy!

  • obagain

jack daddy, it is the 4th of july, he may not have been paying attention much today so he could be with his family for the holiday, I will give him the benefit of the doubt.

  • Ehren

    Happy 4th everyone!

@Jack: thanks for getting my entry in the pool yesterday.

  • Jack Daddy

    @Evan (sorry for the peppering):

Wash’s bullpen mgmt style is clearly to use multiple guys in a game like this, for 1 inning each, rather than let one guy soak it up (and then not be available for a day or two). For example, using grilli or mathis for the rest of this game. What are your thoughts on that? I’ll admit, that I think I’m much more familiar with the other way around. I think I might like this method, as it keeps guys involved, from sitting too long, but doesn’t abuse any one guy.

What are your thoughts? Is this somethign that you can quiz the relievers on and get their preference?

  • The Beer Guy

Baltimore up 4-0. bottom 5th, but LA threatening bases loaded no outs

  • scooper

    Man, I’ve missed these bats!

  • DC

Yall think the crowd likes TT?

  • Jack Daddy

@obagain – probably so. Though I was at the pool with the family, getting Newberg’s updates on my blackberry!!

  • scooper

@DC: Sure! I like him, too.

  • The Beer Guy

Good! I like to see that RS/RA differential get better!

  • Ehren

    @scooper: i hear ya!

  • scooper

Yeah, Jack Daddy, but that is YOU!

  • Ehren

my tickets to frisco are worthless now that smoak is now in AAA.

  • obagain

Nice job guys, we should hit 200 comments on a holiday game, impressive.
I am giving you guys a standing ovation.

  • scooper

Davis at third – THAT’S interesting.

  • DC

@ scooper dont worry i like him too. Hope wash keeps his word and starts playing him more.

  • Ehren

Davis is at 3rd! seems like he’s now riding the pine.

  • Jack Daddy

@ehren – no prob. You had a great game to go see. I was planning to catch a movie after dinner, but Mrs. Jack Daddy was so into watching it at The Porch that we stayed for the whole thing and didn’t leave dinner until it was over.

I’ve been a Tommy Hunter fan since his first start last year and I got a first glimpse of his yakker. You don’t see many nice 12-6ers like that. He was terrific last night.

Hopefully, Scooter will pitch a good one tomorrow. Like I mentioned earlier, Garza wa filthy against us twice last year, including a 2 hit shutout.

  • obagain

Ehren, go watch moreland and tim smith, they will both be in the majors very soon.

  • The Beer Guy

Why not just leave Mathis in there??

  • obagain

Angels score 3, It is now 4-2 O’s.

  • Ehren

It was great watching Hunter pitch. I just wish Wash left him in there for 1 more inning. He was only at 90. can’t forget about the Hank slam.

  • Jack Daddy

@ehren – should have some nice pitching in the second half. Beavan there now. Assuming Kiker and Poveda spend the whole year. Outside chance that Perez and Tim Murphy (who is starting to deal now) get pulled up. Could have a meaty rotation. Plus Smith and Mooreland. Finally, might be seeing Crush there in a few days.

  • The Beer Guy

Baltimore out of the jam, but LA scored 3, trail 4-3 end 5th

  • obagain

beer guy, I am with you and would have left mathis in.

  • Ehren

@obagain: i really like moreland and smith a lot. kiker and beavan are great to watch. I can do without Osuna though.

  • Ehren

    HELLO WIN COLUMN!!!

  • scooper

I would like to see TT catch Holland and Padilla (I think JackDaddy mentioned earlier about him catching Holland for a while).

  • obagain

    great catch to end it.
Come on O’s, I want sole posession of 1st.

  • The Beer Guy

If you want to induce nausea and/or aggravation, just tune into the LA broadcast of a home game when LA is mounting a comeback. It’s enough to make a grown man cry! Hudler makes me want to chew my own arm off…

  • Jack Daddy

I say outside chance on Martin Perez, but hey, Feliz went straight to Frisco from low A.

  • Ehren

@Jack: you’re right about Frisco’s future rotation. It should be fun to watch.

  • obagain

Steve Mcnair has been shot to death, espn is reporting.

  • Ehren

obagain: i heard something about that earlier but haven’t looked into it.

  • Ehren

He’s been shot. Just saw it on si.com

  • obagain

Looks like a murder suicide by his girlfriend. Sad.

  • Ehren

wow, girlfriend. he is married. makes it even more sad.
