All-Star Josh Hamilton: Honored, Conflicted, Eager to Rejoin Texas Rangers

ARLINGTON - Josh Hamilton said the news that he’d been elected again to the American League All-Star starters – left on his cell phone by Rangers manager Ron Washington around 10 a.m. today and received once he got up about an hour later – leaves him with mixed feelings.

“I don’t feel like I personally deserve to go,” Hamilton said from Oklahoma City early Sunday afternoon. “But at the same time, the fans voted me in so I’m more than happy about that. It’s just an honor for me to go for the second year in a row. Obviously I’m happy that I have [been voted in] and hopefully go and able to be a good witness.”

Hamilton’s Triple-A rehab is scheduled to continue Sunday during the Oklahoma RedHawks’ doubleheader against Omaha. He said he remains confident about returning to the Rangers on the upcoming West Coast road trip and be able to play in the All-Star Game in St. Louis on July 14.

“I expect to be back on this road trip and playing every day,” he said. “If I’m doing that, unless the Rangers tell me something otherwise, I’ll definitely play in the game.”

Hamilton said if fans voted for him simply to have him return to the Home Run Derby, he made it known a week or more ago that he didn’t plan to participate in the Monday night event because of his physical situation.

Hamilton has gone 2-for-20 the past week playing with Oklahoma and, before that, Double-A Frisco. He said he feels fine, has been making progress daily and continues to work on his swing.

“If I wasn’t making any progress every day, I’d be a little worried,” Hamilton said. “But it’s starting to come around.”

He said the plan for Sunday’s two seven-inning games is for him to play centerfield in the opener and to DH in the second game.

It sounds like he’s conflicted about going to the All-star game—not as the title says, “conflicted to rejoin the Rangers.

I think it’s supposed to read that he is honored (that fans voted him in), conflicted (about playing in AS game) AND eager to join the Texas Rangers.
