Rangers Notes: Left-Hander Derek Holland Going To Bullpen, At Least For Now

ANAHEIM, Calif. -LHP Derek Holland may be the Rangers’ most exciting starting pitching prospect in years, but for now, the club will send Holland back to the bullpen.

Manager Ron Washington said Tuesday that Holland’s turn in the rotation would be skipped this time through and that he will probably remain in the bullpen throughout the final week of the first half. RHP Dustin Nippert moved into the rotation Tuesday and would probably pitch Sunday’s first-half finale at Seattle. Washington said the Rangers would re-evaluate the starting rotation at the All-Star break.

Holland, 2-5 with a 6.18 ERA, picked up his first win as a starter on Saturday when he went six innings against Tampa Bay. He is, however, just 1-4 with a 6.23 ERA as a starter and has struggled to find a balance in his mix of pitches. He has relied heavily on his fastball and teams have teed off on it the second and third times through the lineup.

“He is still a work in progress,” Washington said of Holland. “I think he’s been very effective as a reliever and he’s had some good moments as a starter. He’s a future starters, but right now, in this stretch, he helps us more in the bullpen. He definitely needs his secondary stuff. You can’t fool too many guys with just a solid fastball.”

The potential problem in trying to develop Holland in the bullpen is that relievers don’t have many pitches to warm up and can’t afford to fiddle around with a particular pitch that is not working during an outing. Most relievers use two pitches  – a fastball and either a breaking pitch or a changeup.

Washington said he expects Holland to be able to address those issues in the bullpen. Holland would be available on Wednesday to pitch in long relief, if needed.

“He’s just not totally polished with that stuff,” Washington said. “Of his secondary pitches, I think the changeup is the best, but he’s going to have to develop the curve and the slider. He can do that in the bullpen. I’m content using him in whatever role helps make us a better team.”

Borbon to minors, McCarthy to 60-day DL: As we conjectured yesterday, the Rangers optioned OF Julio Borbon to Triple-A Oklahoma City and moved RHP Brandon McCarthy from the 15-day DL to the 60-day list to make room on the active roster for RHP Dustin Nippert.

McCarthy, who has been on the DL for a month, still hasn’t started a significant throwing program. He wasn’t likely to be ready until August – at the earliest. This move means he’d be eligible for reinstatement on August 4.

Borbon started only one game during his week in the majors. He will go back to Triple-A Oklahoma City and continue to play center field and bat leadoff. Manager Ron Washington did say he considers Borbon a more legitimate long-term leadoff option than SS Elvis Andrus. The Rangers would love to eventually stick Ian Kinsler’s power in a run-producing spot.

Day off for Kinsler? It appears INF Omar Vizquel is over a bout of shoulder soreness that had left him unavailable for much of the last week. His availability might make it easier for Washington to give Kinsler a day off before the end of the first half. Kinsler went into Tuesday’s game in a 2-for-26 slump since June 30. Both hits were homers. He flied out in his first at-bat Tuesday.

Great move. It is what the Dodgers did with Kershaw, the Rays are doing with Price, and the Braves are doing with Hanson….NOT. I just don’t understand the logic in this move, and with moving Feliz to the ‘pen. If they are supposed to be our “starters of the future”, then they need to take their lumps as such. They don’t need to be working out of the bullpen every 3rd day, and MAYBE developing their secondary pitches. It seems our management still hsn’t figured out how to bring along pitchers quite yet.

If the kid needs that much work on his secondary pitches, then send down to AAA!

And why in the world we would not let Holland get more experience in the rotation when he wouldn’t do any worse than what Nippert did tonight. Holland can go out there and only give up 3 or 4 runs in 4 or 5 innings of work, and he actually means something to this club long term. Put Nippert in the long relief role, and keep Holland in the rotation.

The way this staff has treated Holland is a fcking crime. If he is a starter, let him be a starter. If he’s not, leave him in the pen all year. And if he needs more work, send him to AAA.

    What a joke.

Putting young arms in the bullpen has been going on for years. Steve Carlton had 13 appeareances as a rookie, Ron Guidry had 22 before grabbing a full-time slot, Andy Hawkins was back and forth his first three seasons, and of course Big Tex did his time in the pen his first two years as a met. Success is what they’re looking for. They’re getting it so far tonight.

nippert has one pitch, a FB. He I’d in no way a starter, Holland was rhrowing a good mix of pitches tonight and showed he was the person who would best give the rangers a chance to win.

Holland came in and threw Strikes and for a 20 pitch investment went home with his 2nd win in a week. That’s good stuff…in a lot of ways.

I have posted this ad nauseam on the DMN blog and don’t understand why the media doesn’t question management about this. If this supposed “promising star” basically has a fastball an NO reliable secondary pitch, WHAT THE %*$# IS HE DOING IN THE MAJORS??!! WHY ISN’T HE AT AAA??!! I feel like Will Ferrell in Zoolander asking if he’s the only one that sees this, or if he’s taking crazy pills! Don’t you develop these pitches in the minors, then go to the majors ONLY when you can effectively pitch these pitches?

Hard for me to believe that Holland is going to the pen….to be replaced by Dustin Nippert! That doesn’t seem the best thing for Holland’s development, not does it give the team the best chance to win. 2 out of 3 of Holland’s last starts have been really good, and his 2 inning stint last night showed that he might be putting it together. I would leave him in the rotation. No time to get impatient now. He’s only had 7 or 8 big league starts.

Wow. Responses on this thread, holy s.

No, obviously nobody on the Rangers staff or front office knows a thing about pitching. Jeez. Most of the people who post on this site wanted CJ Wilson released two months ago, so clearly they know a LOT more.

I doubt if Holland would have been moved around so much, and perhaps not called up at all, if we had the rotation/staff that we began the season with. I think Nippert was the 9th or 10th guy to start a game this year. If Nippert had been healthy at the time, perhaps Holland is never called up. Ever consider that?

The move to the bullpen is, at least per above, for the next week until the all-star break. They will re-evaluate when they get to this point. They didn’t come out and say this was permanent. At least give them a chance to be flexible, even if most of you guys aren’t.

NICE, David C. Now sit back and wait for the flack. Sorry, I forgot this is not DMN, where all disagreements, end up in name calling.

Laugh at Eric for comparing Holland to Price, Kershaw, etc. Rolling!!!
