7:09: The homer pool is open and the water is very comfortable.
7:11: In case you missed stuff from earlier in the day, you can check out why Derek Holland pitched and why he was pulled or you can thank your lucky stars that Josh Hamilton feels like he did in 2008.
7:15: No Vlad Guerrero or Torii Hunter in Ang0els lineup tonight. It goes: 3B Chone Figgins, 2B Maicer Izturis, RF Bobby Abreu, LF Juan Rivera, 1B Kendry Morales, CF Gary Matthews Jr., DH Howie Kendrick, C Jeff Mathis, SS Erick Aybar.
7:16: Tom Hicks says Rangers aren’t necessarily out of the picture for a big-time trade acquisition (yes, you Roy Halladay).
9:54: Um, Andruw Jones anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
9:55: This is Andruw Jones’ first multi-homer game since September, 2006.
10:09: More on Jones. He has 13 homers in 157 at-bats this season, a rate of a homer every 12 at-bats. Stretch that over say a 400 at-bat season and what do you have? You have 33 homers. If he hits .230 and ends up with 33 homers, is anybody complaining?
10:16: Ervin Santana has allowed the Rangers 21 home runs in 89 career innings. He entered the game with a 6.46 ERA against Texas. And despite all that, he’s still somehow 7-5 against the Rangers.
10:27: Angels dipping into the bullpen already. Rich Thompson coming on to pitch. Can somebody explain to me why in the world I booked a 7 a.m. flight to Seattle tomorrow? You’d think this is the first year I’ve ever traveled.
10:32: If you are counting at home, that’s three homers for Andruw Jones, tying his career high set on Sept. 25,2002 at Philadelphia. Jones should have at least two more at-bats tonight as he tries to match baseball’s most amazing single-game record – the four-homer game.
10:34: If you are counting at home, that’s five homers for the Rangers.
10:35: I’d also like to point out that America’s Sonic Sweetheart, the lovely Molly Erdman is my guest here tonight at Angels Stadium. Can anybody say “Good Luck Charm.” I’ll expect to be seeing her on Rangers ads the rest of the season; they should probably even bring her in town to bring good luck to the club.
10:44: Erick Aybar’s infield single to lead off fifth might be first direct example of what demotion of Chris Davis means to Rangers. With longer, more flexible body, Davis likely stretches to get through and it makes things that much more evident that Aybar is out. Blalock simply can’t go out as far as Davis can for balls. No slam on Hank. Not many guys can do what Davis does with the stretch.
11:20: So, the column I’ve been working on all night is now up and ready for your reading enjoyment during the seventh inning stretch. I take a more in-depth look at dealing for Roy Halladay. Is it doable? Perhaps. Lots of complications. Lots of obstacles.
11:36: Bruised right palm for Vicente Padilla after Howie Kendrick’s ground ball hit him.
11:45: If the Rangers win this game, they will be 17-5 against the West, including 7-2 vs. Angels. Silly, silly numbers.
first things first, I will settle for no less than 475 comments tonight.
Even, if you could get the site to load faster I would say 525.
Evan,
Any word on Cruz’s new roll with Josh back? Is he only starting against LHP?
@obagain: Here’s my first contribution of the night.
Yes, a fster load would help. This is a little frustrating.
should it count as a record for a 9 inning game when you start 1 1/2 to 2 hours before the game?
Hi, guys! Ready for another Rangers victory?
Great point Don….I say it should count.
Stupid weather feed….where is that rock someone was talking about last night?? Seems only slow on the depot, cause I was just reading all of the other stuff.
AND YEAH! WHERE’S NELLIE??? Can’t argue with Jones hitting that 3 run HR, but can lightning strike 3 times in one week? Guess we’ll see.
What’s up SCOOPER.
not much, TD. What’s up with you?
Oh! Nice graphics on the Home Run Pool!
scooper, always ready for a victory.
I see the rangers released nate gold.
I thought he would get a shot but never really recovered when he got passed over.
@SCOOPER: Thanks man…just havin a little fun.
So Omar batting leadoff…why not Andrus?
cant put pressure on the kid.
I guess…but even then I’d rather have Murphy hitting there. Haven’t really been happy with the line up lately at all so maybe nothing would satisfy me!
Why is it we have the new phylosophy of challanging the kids until they reach the majors and then they do what they can to not challange them?
Why not murphy? He is patient, had decent speed and has some pop when its needed, but he is batting 7th.
I think I am about to give up on trying to figure out Wash’s moves. I understand “going with his gut,” but he makes an awful lot of “gut” decisons. We’re in a tie for first, and I don’t think any of his “gut” moves have obviously cost us a game; however, I can’t help but wonder how many more games we might have won (or lost) if he had made the percentage decisions. We’ll never know!
I have no idea. I am constantly confused by Washington. I really do like him. I think he’s good for the team, but he baffles me, a lot. Thinking about taking Holland still infuriates me, even after reading all explanations. He’s still sitting Cruz, who was sat last week, maybe the week before for a couple. Unless this is some sort of work ethic thing, I don’t know why he’s sitting. This is not even taking into account his odd bullpen strategy that changes nightly.
I’m sure he didn’t want to mess up the rest of the lineup, so he did the easy thing and just plugged Omar into the #1 spot.
@RangersFan: Murphy and Byrd are playing well, and he obviously is going to let Andruw continue to DH. With Hamilton, that leaves no room for Cruz (at least until Wash decides that Murphy or Byrd needs to sit).
evening all!
here’s hoping the rangers bats can tear into santana’s pitching – he’s been weak sauce thus far
That is part of Murphy’s problem. When he was doibg so well last year he was batting fifth and the lineup was consistent. This year I guess RW rolls the dice because it seems Murphy has maybe two days in a row in the same position, but is constantly changing
Most managers will move a guy down in the lineup if in a slump otherwise they leave the
lineup constant.
Not defending Wash on Nellie, but his back stiffened up on him last week. Is it possible it happened again the last couple of days?
sure would love to go 3-2 over the last 5 games and go into the break at 11 over .500
when was the last time the rangers could say that?
No room for Cruz and his 19 homeruns? That’s absurd. I’d still much rather see Cruz than Jones at DH.
Scooper, the easy thing?
Why give cruz 3 days off right before the AS break against your division rivals?
He is a huge bat in the middle of the lineup.
I understand the plug omar in but why not put omar at 7 and murph in 1?
That is not juggling the lineup around and makes more sense.
Re: Holland
from the explanations, it sounds like he is still on a starter’s schedule; he threw 20 pitches in the game rather than throw his between-starts bullpen. and it sounds like Mathis and Grilli are considered the “long” men, so where would that leave Derek?
@evan you gotta get them to take high-speed outa the d banner headline……there’s nothing high-speed about this site……it’s peanut butter slow…..
Workhorse, if that was the case tell us he has a stiff back and his sitting cruz doesnt look stupid.
Jeez, I hope that Cruz’s back is flared up. I would rather NOT make the playoffs this year with Cruz playing than make it and get bumped with Jones taking his playing time. I DON’T sacrifice 2010 one iota for this year. Davis was different – he went down for his OWN good.
If Cruz is healthy, he doesn’t need to be giving ABs to Jones on a consistent basis. He does need rest, but he got that last night.
@obagain: my comment about the “easy” thing, was plugging Ian’s replacement at second (Omar) into Ian’s spot in the batting order (#1). I never said that I agreed with sitting Cruz – I would much rather see him DH or play RF and let Josh DH. and I didn’t say that I agreed with putting Omar #1 (I don’t), but plugging him into the #1 spot IS the easy thing to do. Just because it is easy doesn’t make it right.
wash’s brain gets in a liplock sometimes and he can’t twist his way out of it and then he’s made the move and it’s too late……
i would love to see andrus there…..if we’re looking to 2010 then why are we not experimenting further with Andrus? He’s certainly hit everything we’ve thrown at him so far……why blink?
I still believe that wash plays the game out in his mind before first pitch and he sticks with what he thought would happen no matter what happens in the real game.
obagain, I totally agree. I’m just glad Wash finally acted like a manager and sat “Popup” Kinsler for a game.
@Evan,
For me, one of the most intriguing stories, both ON and OFF the field relates to CJ. The performance part is obvious, but I am struck by the way that he seems to have been ‘welcomed’ back into the ‘family’. The guy seemed like he was on an island at the end of last year and in April. It seems like a remarkable turn-around. I loved his statements a few weeks ago regarding the closer status and they needed FrankFranc to be what they want to be.
You mentioned at one point that somebody must have finally gotten to him and sat him down and got him to listen. Do you have any more color on that?
Finally, I love him in the Pen and we wouldn’t be here without him. But I am definitely INTRIGUED by what he would do as a starter. He seems like a Kenny Rogers all over again.
@Jack Daddy- I believe it was after his Detroit game that went south that he sought out NR himself to talk about things and get advice. It seems to have done wonders for him and I believe I have read that he has a bit of an open door with Nolan and is continually picking his brain. Good sings definitely that he himself got the ball rolling. CJ is a lightning rod for some people. But I think he has good work ethic and mental make up and has crazy good stuff. He will definitely be a big part of good things here for years to come.
Listening to the Rangers Podcast in Arlington.
AJM – you need to have a stronger statement as to why MY is a liability at 3B other than “he’s a statute”. Hey, I watched the games last year and saw his lack of range and called a spade a spade. But he’s not killing us this year at 3B. He’s is average over there. And his ability charging balls has improved to the point that he’s now one of the best IMO.
Don’t be so sour and “intellectual”. You sound miserable talking baseball as if you don’t enjoy it.
Great site, btw. Just lighten up.
@obagain: That’s one of the stupidest ideas ever…that he plays it out in his mind and refuses to adjust to actual game situations.
That’s what makes it completely possible.
whew. game’s finally going to start! i’m ready for some baseball, but the west coast starts make my mornings rough.
CJ has found his role, he is extremely good at it and can jump into the closer role with no problem, on a playoff team that is an incredibly valuable guy to have.
Jack Daddy, I’ve got to disagree with you on CJ. Granted, he is pitching lights out right now, but I see more Matt Whiteside in him than Kenny Rogers.
The way the angels lineup is set out tonight gives me hope
@JackDaddy- Dont you think MY is better than anyone that played there last year? I haven’t thought of him as a liability at all this year.
I just have this picture in my mind of C.J. as a starter – that he would be the type who would take 100 pitches to get through 5 innings.
@workhorse – one of our hardest throwers. Sits at 94 and touches 98. Filthy slider and pretty dang effective change. Not sure the Matty Whitey comp.
Scooper, that is how I would think he would be as a starter, lots of pitches and baserunners but keeps the team in it for 5-6 innings.
@rangers fan – YES. Was arguing with AJM, who just seems to think the guy is not any good (he’s appalled he made the all-star game over Scott Rolen).
Well wash looks good so far.
i guess that’s why cruz isn’t playing
@All: Apologies on the still slow-to-load site. It sped up as the night grew late last night.
In case you haven’t seen, I’ve posted a little update from the Rangers on the possibility of pursuing a big-time trade addition (hello, Roy Halladay). It’s right here: http://bit.ly/eBQkT
Also, as for Cruz, of the four outfielders, he’s currently the coldest. Nothing wrong. His numbers aren’t good against Ervin Santana (3-for-18), but Ron Washington said the matchup was not why he is out of the lineup. Just wanted to give him another day.
WASH is a genius. LOL.
Who is AJM…am I missing something?
to jones’ credit – he generates tremendous power withou “over” swinging like a from a bugs bunny cartoon (see Hammer Blalock).
He looks locked in circa 2004 right now. that bat does NOT look slow. I hate it!! But love being wrong!
Jack Daddy, never doubted his stuff, but the committment to baseball and having his head on straight. Seems like he’s focused now.
Ok. I’m going to stop bitching about Andruw DH’ing.
@obagain: I agree.
@JackDaddy: there are a lot of starters like that around; C.J. is worth more in the ‘pen.
So much for my wondering what Jones was doing in the line up vs. Santana.
@rangers fan – adam morris, from lonestar ball and Rangers Podcast in America.
Posts here often (I believe he is Last of the Romohecans).
@scooper, probably right. This year, no doubt (and on this team with the starter depth we are building).
well padilla starts off nicely!
Saying MY is better than what we had last year is like saying a vw bug is better than a pinto.Which is true but doesn’t make the bug a corvette.
Evan, it is good to see hicks is at least saying he is interested.
I dont like the idea of giving up 4-5 top prospects to gat him but I like thae he is trying.
Anyone know what the “AA” on Padilla’s hat is for?
oh ok…I’ve seen that. He seems very negative most of the time.
So what happens if Blalock keeps hitting and Davis goes on an extended streak in OKC and appears to have regained confidence and his swing. Who plays 1st?
Question #2: What if Blalock and Jones bring their averages up and become attractive trade pieces. Teams offering good bullpen arms or something like that. Do you trade them?
he looks like he’s throwing hard and fast too.
@evan: I don’t even want to get my hopes up about Halladay; however, I can’t help but think that we have what it takes to get him.
DC, young has been ok at 3rd, that is all we need.
I wonder what does everybody think about our chances of getting holliday honestly I dont think it will happen but I didnt think we would be in first place so shows what i know
@rangers fan: i really really hope that hank and andruw’s hot streak gets other teams all tingley and excited.
Josh just said that the Angels are 77-40 when Izturis plays. If they thought he was the real reason for that record, they would play him every day!
well there goes padilla’s good start
Halos have 2 hits, and this is the best I’ve seen Padilla’s fastball all year. He’s throwing poison darts.
if rivera gets a hit, i’m calling HB on the next batter
Young – OK defense and an excellent bat. I’ll take that out of my third baseman.
@scooper- I think that goes to show you the relevance of stats at times. You can make them say anything you want them to.
alan, we have the prospect to get him.
The question is do we want to give up a ton to get him, do we have the ability to sign him to an extension so he doesnt walk after next year and will he waive his no trade clause to come here.
don’t be fooled by the 2 hits. Padilla has a filthy fastball tonight. This is the kind of VP that goes 8 IP and gives up 4 hits.
I wonder how much the Alexis Arguello tribute is gonna cost Padilla? $500, maybe?
Did they fine Millwood when he put Harry Kalas’ initals on his cap?
These are the things
That was big to get out of the first with no runs.
In conclusion to that abbreviated mess…
These are things that tax my baseball brain sometimes
Only thing that could stop the rangers from getting Halladay is his no trade clause and veto power . But hate to see what they would have to give up to get him unless it included AJ,HB and padilla.
Would salty have gotten a hit there?
@Evan josh just gave you and D Magazine a shout-out
DC, they are not going to take on payroll, they will want young prospects.
@obagain: maybe, but could he keep Padilla from coming unglued?
You dont want to get padilla started.
obagain i can always dream can’t i.
In radio discussions today…the old grey wolf seemed to think Halladay wanted no part of coming to Texas and that Toronto would want Smoak, Andrus and more. To that I so HECK NO! We are not ready for that kind of trade now.
@obagain: then we should really root for us getting Halladay. then we would have to dump salary elsewhere!
If santana hits one of our guys, or he gives up a HR, or doesnt get a strike call, or walks a batter or…wait what was my point going to be?
Evening all. Te Quiero Los Guardabosques
If halladay wouldn’t OK the trade, then it is a moot point.
josh, don’t pull anything!
Come of hamilton, you are killing me.
Gran retén Josh
Nice DP.
Padilla is getting squeezed. Come on, ump.
Evening all. Looks good so far. Is la’s radar gun a little fast? Padilla has hit 96 a few times and he doesn’t do that in Arlington
Evan, what’s the AA about on Padilla’s Hat?
wow. the site loads amazingly fast if you disable JavaScript… :^)
@DallasManUFan:
I don’t think MLB is fine-happy like the NFL when it comes to stuff like that. If they were, everyone would be fined for wearing their pants legs below their ankles. (Which is against the rules, from what I’ve heard)
i say it every time he plays, but i really like having omar on the team.
and Omar gets a leadoff hit – could Wash be right about that, too?
Great at-bat by Omar. Let Pop-up watch and learn.
Baseball lets you get away with way more than the NFL, look at all the wrist bands that have names and messages on them.
If I was a smart business owner I would pay a player to tatoo my business name on his forearm so every time he came to bat he would advertise my company.
@evan: who’s going to tell Kinsler that he has a new nickname (Pop-Up)?
AND he still steals! what CAN’T he do?
@ChrisHartman
See Dallas Man U’s comment
Alexis Arguello tribute Chris
“Everybody has a need for a starting pitcher,” Washington said. “We’d certainly like to get a top-notch starting pitcher. We’ve got some young guys and they’ve handled themselves well. But we’re getting to the dog days of August and experience is going to mean a lot.”
-From TR Sullivans latest piece
That kind of mentality is what worries me about this thing.
thank you santana/mathis…please no pop ups
ranger fan, I agree.
Thank you angels.
whoops I forgot to mention strike out…usually MY is better then that.
Whoops that works, thanks again angels battery.
The strange part of wash’s fasination with vets is he came from the a’s where they are always rebuilding.
Evening everyone!!!!
Evening friends, going well so far!
HOMER!!!!!!!!
Evan, is the towel warm up a maddox thing?
I dont remember seeing pitchers doing that before.
Jones hits another one.
It’s the Beer Guy! Everyone’s favorite. LOL
Might have to put the cut AJ banner back in the closet.
Hey beer guy and ehren.
andruw gets two homers in the first 3 innings, omar is a part of two double plays, gets a double and scores on a pass ball/wild pitch…maybe wash’s gut has got something with all this veteran talk
Hitting refresh is like soooo 1996 dial up speed. Brutal.
It also is not what he was chirping about earlier and darn sure not was not said about him in his contract extension press conference as a reason to keep him.
Ryan, just mark out cut and write in trade.
@becca: probably explains why we are poor schmucks railing away on a comment board and not actually working in MLB
and beer guy, good thing you’re here. i would like a delivery. thank you.
Wash has a point about what it takes to get through the “dog days.” Young guys have to learn what it takes. Josh had a hard time last August. But you still have to play the young guys and LET them learn.
hey obagain! picked a great time to come on!
Jack-
I’m muti-tasking and slow on the uptake–but, You’re right about AJM.
1) He seems to have a need to dis MY, no matter what.
2) He has no basis for it aside from, perhaps, arcane stats no baseball man ever heard of. As far as I can tell, he’s never set foot on a baseball field in his life, but, like many of the non-athletes in the stands while I was coaching and playing, he entertains the crowd with his slide rule and his oration. A baseball man looks at a player and sees strengths and weaknesses. A stat man searches for nuances we never thought of.
3) When the year began, I was very critical of MY. He was a beat slow. I immediately saw him standing straight up when the ball was hit and wasn’t reacting quickly. Since then, I think he has improved markedly. He reacts, rotates well and has a plus arm. Only lingering criticism is a little slow on a shot down the line.
Don’t know AJM’s thing with MY, but it was there when at SS (with a bit more Justification), and probably would have been there when he was at 2B if he’s had a blog at that age.
you have to give wash credit for going with andruw in this series…even though it looked bad when murphy didn’t play in the first game
auditor: would that be 28.8k or 14.4?
@Evan/anyone: Any thoughts on BJ Ryan? Blue Jays released him today. Might be something to his lack of playing time to blame for his woes. Could be a quality LHP to replace/supplement Guardado…guess Toronto is on hook for his salary, so we could pick him up for peanuts, no?
@becca, Ehren: No problem, I will be to your row in a few. That’ll be $12 for a bottle (hey, ballpark prices ya know!)
hey scooper, TD, Jack and becca
im with whoever said it earlier…let’s keep the YOUNG talent we have now, let them learn/struggle, and see where the cards fall. because regardless of how this year turns out, 2010 should be a good year
The problem I have with the vetrans playing is I want these young guys getting playing time in these “big” games to gain the experience needed down the road. To me I see it as a set back. We aren’t world series contenders. So while we are division contenders lets let young guys get experience that will be beneficial when we are big time contenders.
I’ve always liked B.J. Ryan, even before he became a closer.
hey hey the gang’s all here
“No room for Cruz and his 19 homeruns? That’s absurd. I’d still much rather see Cruz than Jones at DH.”
Say what?
Hey, Ehren! Hey, Beer Guy! Glad y’all are present!
any HBP winners yet?:D
@rangers fan: i agree, i prefer seeing the young guys playing. experience is the only way to learn. that being said, the old farts are producing. it’s a fine line between playing for contention and playing for building… i could never make that decision.
Hey hey Ehren….
something about these late games, make me all quiet..
Lovin’ this game so far!
I am a firm believer in mixing in some vets with young talent. Not majority vets mind you, but still…the teams with 100% young talent are perennial losers (Pittsburgh comes to mind), who just putter along. I think the vets can play a key role in teaching and holding things together.
@southwick- that was pregame but…I still think it’s a little ridiculous to say sorry Nelson take a seat on the bench and we’ll come get you if we need you. He’s better than that.
I am thinking more like 9.8… early early 1996.
The funny part is that connection speed will soon be in a movie where some young person does not understand why the internet is so slow.
Like this kid who trades his iPod for a Walkman and gets hopelessly confused. Best line: “It took me three days to figure out that there was another side to the tape.”
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/8117619.stm
@southwick: I’ve already made my apology. I will no longer bitch about Andruw DH’ing.
great game. just don’t know how long i can stay awake for it.
Thank God I didn’t post my thoughts on Jones.
Need another GB at somebody.
Fred, no guts no glory.
Another angle to consider, there is a lot to be gained from a young player sitting on the bench next to Vizquel or Guardado and learning that way. Not ALL experience has to be learned first hand.
Heya Scooper!
Actually, this West coast swing is awesome timing for me, even being in eastern time. There’s a music festival going on here and I can go and make it back home for most of the game too!
@TheBeerGuy- I agree. I think those vets are Omar, Eddie, Young is a vet, but I really don’t want to see Jones and Blalock (when Davis has shown he is ready to come back) playing everyday. They won’t be here next year. And I think you trade them while you can if you can bring in another bullpen arm. Their streak won’t last for the duration.
B.J. Ryan’s also from Louisiana. Hope they take a look at him.
@beerguy: did you take your girl with you?
@Rangers Fan: Agree on Davis, absolutely. Doubt you could get much for either of those guys in trade, though, mostly because they will be FAs after the season and they aren’t “key” pieces for anyone (like a Lofton, De Rosa or similar super-utility guy).
Oh and also Milwood seems to be a good mentor for Holland. You see them talking a lot during games and such.
I’ve never heard of the University of La Verne before, but I’m guessing they’re in the same conference as Shirley State.
@Auditor
I read that article the other day, pretty good read. It is amazing all the gadgets kids have these days, and I am only 24. I can imagine a few of you thought that about my walkman.
@Beer Guy- I don’t particularly care who we get. Blalock would save us money that maybe could be used elsewhere.
abreu and padilla have the same nose.
Beer guy, but they are power bats and that has some value.
@scooper: hehe, i met up with her there and a few others. Not sure where it’s going! Seems cooled off now :\
Wow murph looked all crossed up on that.
Need to limit them to 1 here, come on padilla.
@beerguy: sorry!
Is there any way we could lock Abreu and Rivera in a vault somewhere before the next series with LA? Ugh.
Padilla at 51 pitches, he needs a couple quick 1-2-3 innings.
@evan: and Andruw hasn’t even been hot until now. Imagine if he really went on a tear!
As a bald guy, and Evan you can back me up on this, I am jealous of Vicente’s luxurious hair.
im scared to geath of rivera, he’s the Rangers Killer 2.0
death*
OKC is off tonight, that is good timing for davis, have a couple really good games then a day off to just relax.
Hope Padilla can keep it up, and especially keep getting Rivera out.
How come the only people that are ever “designated” are drivers and hitters???
TT, way to go!
wahoo!!! i really root for this kid!
just got my tickets for the boston game. anyone else going?
@Ryans Dad: No fan of Padilla’s hair. Seems a little bit too much work.
You guys/gals are on such a hot pace tonight, I can’t keep up with you. Amazing. Looks like 449 is the Mark McGwire of comment records. In other words, it could have a very short reign.
@obagain: I agree. From his comments after getting the news, it sounds like he really needs to recharge his batteries. I think his slump was wearing on him even more than we could have imagined.
I’m with you Old Tom, I think they should take a look at BJ Ryan. They would probably want to sign him to a minor league deal to test him out, and I bet there is a team out there who will take him on the major league team right away…
@ehren – i got mine. think i’m going to force my dad to go with me. so everyone be on your best behavior.
@becca: I really root for TT, too!
The refreshes are going much faster. And we’ve got happy stuff to talk about.
@Evan or anyone else…
is there a chance that, due to last night’s pitiful effort, Nippert does not start against Seattle? I don’t know who they would start in his place, so I guess I just answered my own question. but man, did he look rusty last night
scooper, I cant imagine he has gone a day without thinking about it for months.
With 2 good games he can just relax and have a good time and not think about baseball, that has to be a good feeling for him.
“And they give you cash, which is just as good as money.”
Gotta love Yogi.
I am thinking about the Boston game…..can’t decide, never sat in the all you can eat seats but a crowded game against the red sox sounds like a terrible time to try it out for the first time, but it would be fun to go….
@Jeffrey: If you’re going to change up the rotation to get Nippert the start last night, then you have to give him another one.
@Jeffrey: if they didn’t start Nippert, they would start Holland. So far, he still seems to be on a starter’s schedule (see Evan’s explanation of his use last night).
I like to think I really root for all the players (Blalock and Jones only to get some sort of trade value).
Wow morales actually was sitting on the curve I think….don’t see that on Padilla too often, especially first pitch.
I won tickets to the detroit game on the 27th, decent seats and my wife is going so I am looking forward to it.
I LOVE THE RANGERS!!!
@Ehren: I am trying to convince a long-time friend who is a Boston fan to meet me in DFW for either the July or August Red Sox series. Depends on availability of cheap flights!
@Jeffrey: my guess is that they start Nippert and have Holland ready to come in early if necessary.
If we win this game, that will be a huge statement. Not saying we will win the division–and we’re certain to struggle at times–but this team will fight to the end. Again, if they win tonight, they will have convinced me to not panic this year. I’ll call them true contenders.
@scooper if it turns out like last night, that plan just might work
The ump must have heard me. Padilla’s getting some calls.
I’m on board with that, Mike in Reno
TD and Beer Guy: it’s a must. Scooper you better be in on it too.
how dumb do you think the angels feel for giving gmj all that money when they did I guess you see know what he really was a spare after he got off the juice
@Jeffrey: the difference would be that they could only use him for about 20 pitches last night; Sunday, he would be ready to go.
If we win tonight and split with seattle we shoud have a 2 game lead at the break, that would be huge with the slump we were in.
Maybe it was a good thing to get everyones slump out of the way at the same time.
Lewin: “My bad” hahaha
and june slumps are better than august slumps
Padilla’s velocity is back up, a good sign. Maybe with the All Star break he can get it all back.
@obagain let’s hope you’re a prophet, because that would be a nice all-star break present
@alan: I was just thinking the same thing, that they must regret that big contract.
@Scooper: I was just thinking the same thing. Holland would be available for long releif if needed.
@ehren: I have some logistical problems; I won’t know for another week or so if I could even go. At that point, I don’t know if I will even be able to get a ticket.
@alan: i laugh everytime i think about it.
Would a package of Salty, moscoso, arias, kiker and moreland get us halliday?
@obagain: you are kidding, right?
@alan: i too get a good belly laugh and say “sucka” everytime i think of it.
@all: I’m with you on the GMJ deal. And I love it that it was the Angels!
@obagain- I can’t think it would. According to something I read when the Cards inquired basically they were asked to hand them their list of prospects and circle any 5. I don’t want us to do that.
A starting catcher, starting 2nd baseman, a near ready power 1B, a LH starter that is close and a RH starter that is ready for the pen at least.
One tough part of getting Halladay is that the GM in Toronto is on a short leash. If he trades Halladay he is going to have to get a kings ransom for him. He will have to see results very quickly from whoever he gets in return or he’s outta there.
@Jeffrey and others: Ron Washington mentioned the possibility of pitching Sunday’s game out of the bullpen, which could mean asking both Nippert and Holland to each go three innings and then letting the back end of the bullpen take over for the final three innings. It’s one possibility.
@obagain: they have an all-star 2b. Also, they are going to want our BEST prospects, not the ones that we are willing to give up.
holy crap AJ
3 homers?!?!?!?!
Your kidding me, three?
Nellie WHO?
OK. Andruw can play every day!
get out of town. i’m afraid to even THINK anything bad about andruw now for fear of all of you knowing i thought it and calling me out!
I was pretty much kidding earlier, but wow I never would have expected that from Jones.
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!
GET OFF ME BALL!!!!!!
so….maybe the slump is officially over?
It sure is fun when everyone is HOT!
Yeah, let’s sit Jones
well, huh. these are good times.
Wow.. the homerun Rangers are back in style.
oh dear…this is crazy!
Wow the home run pool is officially in a state of confusion.
Did not expect this tonight.
8-1!
I think they are tattooing their names into the foreheads of the angels pitchers.
Evan is going to have to dig to find “Three Down” at this point of the game.
BOOM!!
Again with the 2 out in the 5th rally…
let’s also remember the scariness of the last rubber match with this team…keep the pedal to the metal!
i imagine vlad the ranger impaler sitting in a dark corner of the angels dug out silently weeping, remembering the days when he did this to us.
and there’s hammy asking “what about mine???”
@evan I think that approach would actually be really good thinking. Get everyone some work before the break and allow all of the pitchers to go out there and just throw their best stuff.
Moreland is a hitting machine, arias can really play short or 2nd, kiker is a power lefty with very good numbers in AA, moscoso has a .90 era in AAA and looked good when he was here.
Salty is a switch hitting catcher.
That is a pretty good package.
You cant give up holland, feliz or perez.
I would put beavan in instead of moscoso but they are going to want a pitcher that is ready now.
Man, I’ve really missed these bats!
speaking of vlad…i might of missed it, but is he hurt?
the Angels announcers are basically begging someone on the Angel staff to bean someone.
wow. don’t really know what to say.
@evan – is is possible that the Borbon call-up was to Jones/Blalock what the waiver of padilla was to him? Seems like a stretch, but man, look at the evidence.
I don’t think that was the intent (i think they just wanted a spark), but man.
I have a question is that the baseball antichrist in the background with the blue shirt on gosh i dont know who i despoise more him or drew rosenhouse
Quote from Riccardi:
“So anyone who comes to us with two young players — that’s the equivalent of the draft picks — we’d need something else and something else and something else and something else.”
Listening to the Angels radio call for the last few innings and they sound like they’ve had enough of the Angels screw ups.
Also the 25th is Rally Monkey coin bank day for kids 13 and under :
ehren, yes, hurt his leg making a throw last night.
@Ehren: Yes, he hurt himself last night.
@ehren: i think he pulled something last night.
@s.Arcasm: if they do, we’ve got the right guy out there to respond
@S.Arcasm
If that is right then that’s sorry.
At least wait till Andrew gets up again.
@Jack: do you think the return of Josh (presence) has anything to do with it?
Jones: who’d a thunk. I was ready to shoot him. Must be something about the LA press
@Alan: Yep, that’s him. He owns those seats, and has for years.
I don’t think that would be a good thing for them. Padilla is on the mound.
Odds on them hitting Jones next at bat?
@obagain: still, you’re talking about our 2nd or 3rd tier prospects. I don’t believe that they will settle for that kind of package for Halladay.
@Ehren: Vlad strained a muscle behind his knee last night. Torii Hunter has a strained abductor muscle. Both could be on way to DL.
@Jack Daddy: I’d like to think that these players are responsible professionals and that messages like that don’t necessarily have to be delivered. Padilla was different. Rangers communicated directly to him that he was not well-liked or respected within his own clubhouse.
here comes the 5th inning…and boom goes the dynamite
POW.
If they bean jones next time up it will either start a fight or one of their players is going down also.
@becca: thankfully Wang didn’t hurt himself. LOL
Look, wash is argueing a call, I like it.
My guess is that they hit somebody soon.
@ehren – yes. an angels game without wang is not a game i want to be a part of.
It is imperative to beat the living crap out of this bullpen tonight to make sure it’s good and softened up for the Yankees starting Friday.
wow, thanks for all the answers. can’t say i’m terribly upset learning that hunter and vlad are out.
Yes it will start a fight, or Padilla will kill someone.
for anyone who ever had a tough year at work that wants some inspiration…..Andruw Jones is the poster boy!
i meant yankees. i swear. i knew that. i have tired head
if they bean Andruw, I am betting on a benches clearing brawl. That would be obvious. If they hit someone else, I’m not sure what will happen.
OK, what about salty, beavan, kiker, ramirez and moreland?
i think padilla is up to a 1/2 gallon of sweat right now.
@evan: so do they like padilla now?
hey ehren. wife had taken control of the computer for a bit, looking at celebrity gossip or somesuch. Even she has come around on AJ – she hasn’t been his biggest fan. I think she is in shock.
@becca: Sorry to have to tell you this, but the Yankees Wang is on the DL right now, too.
@Evan: wow-I never knew they were so blunt with padilla. Interesting.
It’s nice to be putting the other team’s bullpen into the red zone, especially the Angels. It happened to us enough last year to last three seasons.
Right now is a good time to be a Ranger fan.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Halladay is a real stud, no doubt. But I wouldn’t give up what it would take to get him. Just no guarantee that we would have him after 2010, plus it adds quite a bit of salary. I think the cost/benefit analysis is better for a lower tier guy like Correia.
guess Wang pulled something.
Becca, they tolerate him now, I dont think he has many friends in the clubhouse.
I’m with Beer Guy. Halladay doesn’t like it here so he won’t stay. why give up the FARM for him.
Wang hurt his shoulder…too much vigorous arm movement.
“F-ing A Cotton, F-ing A”
that makes me sad. everyone needs friends, although i can honestly say i like maybe 3 of my coworkers. everyone needs wang too.
but hey, at least the rangers are winning.
WOW! nice strike out!!!!
Great pitch!
@obagain- Man, that must be lonely. The rest of the team reminds me of a frat kind of thing. They seem to all be friends and spend the down time yucking it up. Then there’s Vicente with no friends. Sad.
padilla looks like he’s pitching with a chip on his shoulder. good. he’s throwing hard tonight
@obagain: they are going to want Smoak, not Moreland. And they would probably want Feliz instead of one of the 3 pitchers you mentioned. And throw in Ross instead of Ramirez.
So: Salty, Smoak, Feliz, Kiker, Ross.
That might do it, but I won’t swear to it.
Wow NASTY three pitch at bat to the best hitter on their team in my humble opinion.
Go Vinny.
man I love that…. really slow curve, normal curve, and then a 95 mph fastball with movement. WOW
Did we find out what the “AA” was on Vinny’s cap? I hate playing catch-up.
@ehren – i think Josh back definitely has a trickle down impact (and the fact that you took Davis out, which had become essentially the equivalant of batting the pitcher — only worse — in the 7/8 hole). But Jones and Blalock started hitting last week.
I don’t think they were dogging it and needed “motivating”. But I have seen a definite willingness (particularly on blalock) to not try to pull everything. Hank has gone up the middle 1/2 dozen times in last week. To their credit, they have adjusted.
But yes, I sincerely believe Hammy will have a huge impact.
Finally, I wouldn’t make a single trade with the way this team is now playing. I never bought the notion of a pitching trade (an ace would cost too much and we have internal reinforcements for the pen — feliz will be filthy).
I wanted a corner IF or OF bat. But have tapped the brakes on that for now.
Would still investigate whether I could steal bradley from the cubs and get them to pay 1/2+ of his salary.
when padilla’s on, he’s the best on the staff, in my opinion.
I wonder if Padilla ever had to wear a pink backpack in Arizona…
RF, he did it to himself.
First he hardly speaks english.
Then he hits guys and the other team retaliates.
He knowingly hits guys for stupid stuff, like the ump not giving him a strike call.
The guys dont want to get hurt because he throws a tantrum.
I would lOVE to see these bitchass angels try to drill Jones. We would see a beatdown of epic proportions.
Anyone see the Verducci mid-season warads on si.com? talk about no love for the rangers. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/tom_verducci/07/07/midseason.report/index.html?eref=sihpT1
Beaning someone with Vinny on the hill for the opposition is just asking for a pitch to errantly enter the dugout.
Also, anyone else like watching the bandwagon empty and fill about once or twice a week? It’s like watching the tides come and go.
Ehren http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexis_Arguello
NO BRADLEY!!!!
I WOULD look to trade some of the guys that are on the roster bubble, rather than risk them for nothing (vallejo, arias, poveda and moscosco). guys that have some value but I see being leap-frogged here. if not for a piece to help this year, for younger guys that aren’t rule V eligible yet.
Finally, I would love to see Martin Perez get called up straight to Frisco like Feliz last year – just simply so that I can see him in person in August/September.
I Just wonder will this team finally get the respect it deserves for the year they are having or does everyone still think of us as a nice little story. This year reminds me allot of 96 and and I know it is not perfect but man winning baseball and not being a joke to everyone is great.
padilla is a beast when he is on…..his on is the definition of dialed in……..love to watch it as it is a thang of beauty……
i just have to say, this blog is really fun. went on vacation for 2 weeks last month, and i didn’t realize how much i missed this until i got back. (sniff sniff, tear, sniff). i love you, man..
and boy, do i really love seeing that angels bullpen take a beating
Im sorry, but those who want Bradley and wouldn’t even consider a trade for Halladay are absolutely nuts.
You gotta love this! I know that pitching and defense are what we need, but the bats sure are entertaining. Especially when we are pounding the Angels!
Thanks Dad!
Could the bases be loaded for jones?
That could be interesting.
Dont get me started on bandwagon fans. Ask Ryans Dad about my thoughts on those morons.
*group hug*
I don’t see a need for Bradley…where would he play? No need for another OF’er…Jones is heating up as DH…
We need another starter and/or a solid RP.
@obagain- I don’t disagree but it is sad.
@LOTR0- it seems that way but most of the people here seem to be pretty level-headed. Not the case over on the DMN site.
does anyone know who’s pitching in frisco on friday? heading to my first rough rider’s game. all you can eat seats and everything! i guess i’m practicing for the boston game.
Has anyone else noticed the loud, collective groan coming from the crowd when the Rangers make contact?
Sounds like Jeffery could use a group hug. LOL this blog has it all over DMN.
@alan: I hope so too! Also I think this will help the team attract more free agents in the off season.
Wassup Mr. Magee?
@alan i hope no one recognizes the above-average season we’re having so that we can sneak up on everyone like the rays last year
Am I the only one who thinks that the comments by Hicks is only a marketing ploy to sell more tickets?
What is the remainder of Halladay salary, about $6m? Since most of the prime seats are already sold, how many additional tickets would the Rangers need to sell to recapture his salary- figure average ticket would be $10 and only 36 home game left. Max maybe 10k extra tickets a night for a total of +100,000 a night. For 36 nights that is only $3.6m for the rest of the season.
They just let go 10% of the staff to save $1m. How exactly are they going to justify the new additional payroll?
Hicks comments is nothing more than a marketing ploy and to drive up the cost for other contenders.
When you are marketing to sell a team you get rid of dead salary, like Hank. You do not add additional salary. Low salary and lots of prospects equal good selling points.
as for bradley, i think he and andruw are pretty interchangeable. he wouldn’t have a place with andruw doing what he’s doing now. and when andruw goes cold again…there’s cruz, boggs, etc…
Alright Andruw, make it 4 and 7
Right now poveada is the starter for friday.
btw, anybody paying attention to the first 3 or 4 starts by Robbie Ross, the Kasey Kiker starter kit we drafted in the second round last year? Striking out nearly 2 guys;inning. Just plain silly numbers. Throws several mph harder than kiker (though kiker threw harder when he first got here – before learning to “pitch”). another guy that adds depth.
We also had another 1st/supp pick in 07 draft (with hunter, beavan, main, and borbon) that nobody EVER talks about – neil ramirez. finally starting to show something. supposed to have plus, plus slider. Daniels’ scouts/talent guys have done a simply incredible job of stockpiling arms.
Did anyone notice the face of MY that Omar didn’t go on that. If he had the lead he should have taken, he should have gone.
becca: you’ll love those seats. i have the teddy package for 8 games. absolutely love them.
http://www.ridersbaseball.com/press/pitching/
this site will tell ya what you need to know. HAVE FUN!
Becca, boggs dislocated his shoulder and will be out for a while.
thank you, obagain.
even just typing that makes me say in my head ‘obi wan kanobe’
Auditor: you also have to figure food, beer, parking and gift shop buys.
I just gotta say this: Whoever thought there was no interest in the Rangers out there? Well, I want to introduce them to the Cornerites. You folks are passionate, interesting, funny and growing in numbers daily. Thanks a bunch.
@Evan- thinking down the road…what does Davis have to do to get back up here? And how does Blalocks numbers affect that?
Jack daddy, just wait till you start hearing about de los santo, he has 46 K’s in 19 innings, no that is not a misprint.
He is in the DSL.
@Rangers Fan
Just rewound it, MY seemed to just be adjusting himeself….
How about figgins look on the rapid rewind?
Angels have the Yankees next, who are 8-2 over the last 10 and won the last two over Minnesota. Things could get even better over the weekend if the Rangers could take 2 of 3 from Seattle.
I would like to see Hank’s glove moving from the ground up on his pick’s. There will be errors as long as he is moving his glove from top to bottom.
@Evan: thanks for staying in Dallas!!!!!
Good night everyone. See you in Seattle.
“First place Texas Rangers”
PS- when the camera panned the bullpen…I swear whoever was sitting on the far left in the blue pullover…was ASLEEP!
Don’t forget that the Angels may also get in on the Halladay sweepstakes. If they get him it will make the division that much tougher for the next several years (assuming they sign him to an extension). Everyone seems to be assuming that all of the Rangers prospects are going to be great and winning the division next year and beyond is a given. Not so fast, my friend.
RF, it is called meditation.
@the dr pepper sponsored gentleman: good night to you too. and holy late night. it’s already 11. i’m getting too old for this.
@auditor – don’t forget merchandise, parking and food/beer.
Which makes me wonder why they wouldn’t 5 days before every game start offering tickets at a sliding price until it hits a buck. even if you gave them away, you would make money on the other stuff. I understand why you don’t typically do this (you wouldn’t get anybody to pay full freight), but you already have your season ticket base and by sliding the pricing you would capture the highest prices for the people wanting the best seats.
Sort of like a fixed cost analysis. The seats are there and built and paid for, might as well feel the dang thing up every night and make money on beer and dogs parking.
@jeffrey – i can’t stomach the dmn blog. i’ll look at the post from the writers, but won’t look at the comments. there are some regulars over there whose face I’d like to smash into a jelly (again, for you IASinPhilly fans). this site has terrific regulars (my wife calls them my little cyber baseball buddies).
Haha he looked to be squinting to me but still funny regardless, thanks for the heads up.
Also I love my DVR.
Becca, you are only old when you allow yourself to be.
Hey we were the lead story on baseball tonight well mostly because of Andrew Jones but I will say it again at least we are on there for something good and not for losing 12 to 11 or something like that
@becca: i think you’ll have michael ballard pitching for frisco on friday.
anyone catch how many pitches VP is up to?
Boy the Angels announcers sound dejected!
A Padilla CG would be just what the doctor ordered!!! Anybody know his pitch count?
Maybe that was it..but he sure looked asleep which would have been hilarious.
And oh please no…not Halladay with the Angels. Most of what I’ve been reading is sending him to the NL which I am all for.
He’s at 95 pitches
Padilla at 95 pitches.
@Jack: absolutely agree on both counts. don’t even get me started on “Habib” or “All Sheep..” over at DMN.
is anyone warming up for the rangers or will my boy vincente be out again?
@Jack Daddy: The SF Giants actually do something similar with their tickets. They have a few sections that has a sliding price based on interest in the game. As more tickets sell the price goes up. I don’t remember the specifics, but it is based on what you are saying. They would rather get people in the house for cheap then have empty seats.
I would guess around 90. I think it was 80-something during the last inning.
If halliday goes to the angels lets hope they give up their top 5 prospects and he walks after next year.
Thanks Beer Guy/obagain.
“There is a lot to see of matt palmer.”
For some reason lewin’s bad jokes keep cracking me up tonight.
@obagain – very intrigued by de los santo. but he seems like a mirage at this point – kind of like syd finch. or was it sid fynch?
Angels + halladay scares me. but they won’t get him. Jays will send to NL. Angels have a great farm, don’t get me wrong, but I like oour future better. Plus, i don’t think they resign Lackey and even if they do, the dude has thrown a lot of innings (see mark beuhrle).
@Rangers Fan: Yes, they would prefer to send him to NL, but you can’t count the Angels out. They have the money that they were planning on paying Teixeira available to give Halladay.
i would love to not see halladay until the world series
9 more outs might be pushing it for VP, depending on how the 7th goes…
@ehren – habib is the main guy i was thinking of. haven’t hit anybody since i was 17 but love to smash that dude. everytime i read that “sheep” line, my bp skyrockets. i finally gave up. they’re idiots. if you hate the team so much, why bother blogging all day?
i really doubt halliday is coming any where near the rangers. and i really hope that means nowhere near any of the division teams on the west coast. i really doubt he’s going anywhere. i can’t imagine any team is that desperate for one player to fleece their entire org. oh wait, wasn’t something done like that to get a-rod here?
and again i prove why i have yet to be offered a front office job.
The thing we need to remember about trades is we have a loaded system, our second tier guys would be top 5 in most systems.
@all: looks like we are going to smash the record tonight – already at 373
what was last night’s final tally?
i luv the lack of luv from si…….but it has wash as runner-up for manager of the year…..that’ll work…a bunch of underloved overachieving………
@Jack: you going to the boston game?
Well, I do the live chats with durrett over there and some nights are bad but you learn to not even pay attention to them.
The strange part is over there you have the extra security to go thru and those guys could blast over here much easier but prefer to work harder over there.
I never said they were smart.
With Josh and Tag talking about the celebration in the game today…that’s one thing to really like about this team. They seem to all be hard works and you don’t really see any “hot-doggers”. Or am I being blind?
We were right at 450 last night.
why 2 of 3 from seattle……why not 3-0…..they haven’t beat us yet, why start now?
i haven’t seen the brewers name mentioned for halladay (frankly haven’t read too much of the stuff on who is), but:
1. they are loaded too (i read a scout last year say their AA team (i think it was aa) was the best minor league team he’d ever seen;
2. i believe melvin is buddies with the brass in tor; and
3. halladay’s K is less than whay they offered fat butt cc.
with gallardo and halladay, they take the central and then who knows.
@Evan: Tell Molly Hi for us! So will you be going straight to the airport from the game to catch the flight?
@obagain: yeah, but if they settle for 2nd tier prospects when they are trading their ace, the GM will be hearing about it from EVERYONE (probably including the owner). That’s the problem with a loaded system – everyone ends up asking for more because they know you have more to give.
11:20: So, the column I’ve been working on all night is now up and ready for your reading enjoyment during the seventh inning stretch. I take a more in-depth look at dealing for Roy Halladay. Is it doable? Perhaps. Lots of complications. Lots of obstacles.
http://insidecorner.dmagazine.com/index.php/2009/07/08/the-rangers-and-roy-halladay-is-it-possible/
We play 4 in seattle.
just saying – they won the opener of the 3 game set in Arlington. we won 2 and 3 no walkoffs (hank double and davis bomb). did bedard come off dl today? or are we facing him? what about felix? He toyed with us in may.
@Jack Daddy: The Brewers probably won’t go after him because they gave up a lot last year for CC Sabathia and can’t afford to give up another ransom for a pitcher that they can’t afford to re-sign.
@Jack Daddy: Doug Melvin is not buddies with Toronto management. J.P. Ricciardi replaced Gord Ash as Toronto GM. Ash is a close friend of Melvin’s and, as it turns out, now his assistant GM in Milwaukee.
Don’t we play 4 in Seattle?
So Hicks says he’s willing to spend a little for the right trade, Halladay seems a little to rich for this thing. I also doubt Roy has any desire to pitch in Texas. What deals are we looking at here? Anyway to get Buckholtz from Boston w/o Smoak being part of the deal? Does this thing need a bat +intangibles in a N. Johnson? Is Sheets going to be ready after All-Star break?
Here is some more on player reaction from sullivan.
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090708&content_id=5769250&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb&partnerId=rss_mlb
@JackDaddy- I think Bedard is Sunday and King Felix is tomorrow, I believe.
WHAT IS VICNTE DOING???
@ehren – bought tickets today in fact for the wednesday game for my family of 4 (my oldest turns 7 on the 23rd). were in the center field bleachers, just left of the rangers pen. is that the IC night?
also taking my boy to the twins next friday.
they are 8-3 when i go, so trying to keep their wins up!
Evan—IMO, all you have to do take ALL the blog fans away from competitors is to show us more of yourself…sometimes seems like you’ve tuned us out…but I agree with others, I like the fact that those who post on this blog are not as negative as the DMN folks
Remember that ALL of us are on here because of YOU…we moved to follow the best beat writer
Ok, time for bed for me. Enjoyed the chat! GO RANGERS! Great game tonight, let’s take it to Seattle!
@becca: “i can’t imagine any team is that desperate for one player to fleece their entire org.”
I would almost guarantee that Halladay is traded within a month. There are a lot of teams that would love to have him. I think the only people that don’t want him are people on this blog. You have to give up a lot of talent to get a stud like Halladay, and there are plenty of teams that will do it.
Jack-
Agree. Enjoy Durrett and MacMahon on DMN. Comments seem to be 75% pimple faced 15 year olds proud of their sexual double entendres, and with no interest/knowledge of baseball.
@evan – that’s right. i knew there was a connection. Weren’t ash and melvin in each other’s wedding parties or something?
Yea, I read the articles but mostly avoid the comments.
I hope he is okay why do they do that him and millwood
later Beer Guy!
So, who all is coming to hang out at the Bston game on July 21? Really hoping for a rocking good time.
@Jack: They have been long-time friends and families have often vacationed together.
Are you coming out on July 21?
@Jack: IC game is on Tues.
Here is a good column from Heyman on SI.com about the suitors for Halladay. I tend to stay away from ESPN.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/jon_heyman/07/08/halladay.trade/index.html
@Alan: Never tune you out. Sometimes, this little operation we’ve started can be overwhelming. My full number of off days since we started on March 4 have been less than 10. I sometimes get buried under emails and trying to continue to grow what we do, but nothing gives me the energy that seeing all of your interaction here does. I appreciate all the very, very kind words here.
You know, it is nice being on the other end of picking up pitchers.
O’day has been great and now grilli looks pretty good. I am sure those other teams are kicking themselves for letting them go.
@Evan: Me and my wife will be there.
Wow- Hangover talk going on…interesting
If I come to the Boston game on the 21st can I wear my Yankees stuff, or will you all throw me off the home run porch?
@alan
Don’t forget Evan has a job to do that doesn’t necessarily include us at all.
I think he is pretty attentive considering he is watching a game and writing about the team and possibly the game itself at the same time.
BTW Evan good column, unfortunately the only place I can see the Rangers having in this deal is one they usually take. As bait to drive up the price for other teams.
Evan, if you ever need help all you have to do is ask.
@PTRF: can you fly??? LOL
@ptrf: i would just be gun shy to do it. but i’m also not used to the rangers being a pitching powerhouse. no doubt it would be great to have him, i’m not saying that. i would just really really be surprised. maybe i’m just too used to saying when i see someone on another team that really lights up, ‘hey wasn’t he with the rangers at one point?’ and i worry about who we’d have to let go. trades are maybe too fancy for my small baseball brain.
@Ehren: Ok, I’ll stay home.
Waco, if that means the angels give up more than come on toronto, use us.
@Evan: I’m with obagain. anyone one of us would be more than happy to help out in any way.
@evan: who were Atlanta’s top 3 prospects at the time?
@PTRF: be proud to wear the Yanks gear. i’m not offended. it’s not Tex related is it?
@evan:
1. like your article. for me the key is not giving up Holland. If for no other reason than he’s a lefty. I could live with your package (Feliz, Catcher, Kiker and Beltre) otherwise. In a heartbeat. Don’t forget Cat’s contract is off the book after this year. And, doesn’t buck’s come off? Or did it already?
2. Not sure about IC night. going the next day for my little boy’s birthday. Wife probably won’t care. I just heard the light turn off in the bedroom (oops). I’ll ask her tomorrow.
Hitting Louie’s tomorrow. Too bad you’re in CA.
Just getting home after being in the car for a while and listening to the game and I just want to say that Steve Busby is the man. Can we PLEASE replace Dave Barnett with him for the rest of the season once Eric Nadel is back in the saddle 100%?
@Evan, just pick out 9 of us each night to cover one inning, then take all of our inning-paragraphs, string ‘em together, add your magic touch, and voila – post-game recap. maybe that would allow you some more down time
Evan, Have you thought about putting the notes that are at the top inside the comments but use another color so we know it is from you so we just have to scroll up till we see that color?
@PTRF: on second thought wear the gear! I’d like to see the sox fans get mad about it. LMAO
Hey I dont know who that alan Is this alan did not write that just let everyone know there is two alan’s here
I don’t want to see JD do any more trades of top prospects, especially pitchers, for players which are “more major league ready”. He needs to stick to the trades that go the other direction, e.g., Blalock, Jones, Padilla.
@PTRF
So let me get this straight, you are a Ranger and Yankee fan?
hmm.
I used to be that way, I think I was maybe 11 or 12, even had a poster of Jeter on my wall.
Then the yankee’s smashed us in our first ever playoff series.
After the final out I ran into my room and ripped the poster of the wall. I have hated the yanks ever since.
GO AJ!
Padilla left with a bruised right palm. That’s exited with a bruised right palm.
@Jack Daddy: We will do Louie’s before end of the regular season.
@Dylan: You will get used to Dave. Just a slower more laid back voice than many are used to, but Eric is coming along fine and should be good to go without interruptions come the start of the second half.
@jack daddy NO we’re 5-0 vs seattle……so instead of thinking 2 of 3 we should be thinking sweep…..we have their mojo and we shouldn’t give it up
I’m in for IC night. My wife’s words “oh my god, you have to go. It would be like gossip girl fansite having a party and me not going!”
Not sure what that says about her. Yes she’s pretty cool. and yes, she’s pretty dorky. but she’s way hotter than i deserve or COULD EVER repeat again.
@JackDaddy: if that package is all it takes, it’s a no-brainer.
@scooper: I believe Tommy Hanson, Jordan Schafer and Jo-Jo Reyes were probably considered the top three. Elvis was certainly close.
@Jack Daddy: Does she have any single friends?
Ha. I’m kidding. I think. I’m not so sure.
@just saying – my bad. could have sworn we lost that opener in Texas. will have to refresh my memory as to what happened that night.
@Jack
True they will sell more concessions and parking. But honestly, if you go to a game how much more do you really spend? Maybe two trips to the concessions stand. Maybe $15 dollars… and how many people are driving by them selves? So maybe an extra $15 for those extra 10k in attendance but do not forget the additional cost to service those people ether.
So we add and extra $150k a home night. For maybe 36 game… this assumes the trade happens before the next home-stand. So that is an extra $5.4m before any additional cost.
You still have the fact that they let go of people in a down economy and then suddenly add additional payroll. Sorry, this is a poor public relations problem waiting to happen.
@evan: but you have sonic molly!
OT: anyone know what that acoustic guitar song is that plays on the some of the rangers tv spots?
@Ehren: It is inadvertantly Tex related. It started as a Giambi 25 jersey, but is now a Teixeira 25 jersey. Sorry. I was raised in NY and am still a partial Yankees season ticket holder.
@Evan: The reason I follow the Rangers is because of you and this blog. I live in Dallas now, and after reading some stuff on here (including the fun interaction of the posts) I started watching the Rangers before/after Yankees games. You do a great job.
@Evan: Careful, Molly is with you. Did you ever tell her hi for us?
On Baseball Tonight, Buck’s MOST IMPORTANT THING was the Rangers beating up the Angels. He said, “The Rangers are for real.” I’m not a bog fan of Buck, but at least our boys are turning some heads.
How long is this Kinsler break supposed to last? Just tonight, tonight and tomorrow?
@Jack: SWEET! i hope we all don’t end up wearing name tags. LOL
@WacoGreg: See my comment at 11:39. I am a Yankees fan first and foremost. I follow the Rangers simply because of this site.
@PTRF ok i guess that brown nosing response I will let you get away with.
At least you were raised there.
@PTRF- Oh dear…it’s a Tex shirt? Yuck!
@Auditor: you’ve got to tell me where those concessions stands are! I’f i can escape for $15 a trip for myself I’d be lucky.
@just saying – how could i have forgotten that one? Holland got his first win that night! I vaguely remember that game. Kind of weird. I was at the davis walk off. I guess that game used up my brain’s RAM.
Some of my favorite players of all time are Yankees; The Mick and Donny Baseball, and yet I absolutely despise the organization as a whole.
So CJ Wilson just tweeted…apparently from the dugout? Interesting, or not?
SO according to Josh we (kinda) have 3/5 odds of making the playoffs. I would take those odds I think.
@the other Alan…I’ll post as Alan in SA from now on so as not to slander your reputation
And Rivera crumbles under the pressure of not having Torii and Vlad in the lineup!
In the last I dont know how many years I have seen the rangers going to play the angels that is the quitest I can rember that stadium it is so sweet
Thanks, Waco.
@RF i think it’s fun, since he knows he won’t be needed tonight (surely)
@Rangers fan
What did it say?
alan in sa no disrespect taken just lettting everyone know first time I have seen you here no offense takne
Yea, it is fun when you know the other teams fans know it;s over early.
I find CJ very “Romoesque”. Needs to keep his mouth shut and spend his time studying.
this is CJ:
str8edgeracer:Great start to the day- wheat grass!
Sorry, Ryans Dad. Trust me, they do a lot of things I don’t like either.
Hey can we get to 500 tonight?
COme on #4
I have never seen that before.
C.J. said in the interview on the pregame show that they were not allowed to tweet during the games. I guess he changed his mind!
Evan, I told you we could get 500 if you got the site loading faster.
He’s had a great night, but that was an awful swing.
No 4 home runs for Andruw tonight. What a disappointing night for him.
str8edgeracer:Great start to the day- wheat grass!
WHA?
“Great start to the day- wheat grass!”
It makes no sense considering it 9:45 out there..maybe the site had a glitch or something.
@wacogreg – you were 12 and had a poster of jeter on your wall? I hate you and so does my receding hairline!!
Or he has an imposter.
Site has gotten progressively faster tonight as well.
so much for andruw’s record night. really wish this guy would start hitting. i kid, i kid. i wish there was a different font for sarcasm
we’re at 475
@becca… I prefer to keep the sarcasm inferred so that it simultaneously amuses some people and pisses off each other.
But it’s the simple things for me.
@obagain: didn’t we blow past 500 a week or two ago?
Nice boring end to the game here.
Bring on seattle!
@becca: I agree! It is much tougher to catch all of the sarcasm when you are simply reading the comments. I do much better in person.
@Jack Daddy
I think I was 12, what year was it we made the playoffs the first year, 96 right?
Yes I was a misguided youth, and I didn’t like the Yankee’s at that time if I remember right. Just Jeter.
Cj realy had kept his mouth shut. He see,ms to get along well with the team and be a real leader of the pen out there. I have nothing negative to say about him this year. One thing to really like is his ability to let walks, hits or errors get to him while pitching. He just attacks the next batter and is usually successful. To be a good late inning pitcher you have got to be able to put things out of your mind (including a bad game the night before) and go out there and get the job done. He’s shown that ability.
Ehren, that was an extra inning game.
@Evan Re: Dave Barnett. I hope so. I’m finding it difficult to enjoy when he’s continuing to call the previous pitch while the next pitch. I’ll take your word for it though.
@ehren: yes, we blew by 500, but that ended up being extra innings. so we have 2 separate records.
ha, dylan. you rabblerouser. i prefer not to get flamed on the interwebs. i’m too sensitive and mean people scare me.
Why is O’Day being used tonight?
@Rangers Fan
I also think CJ has grown up a ton recently.
Although tweeting from the bullpen doesn’t really support that point much.
I have always been rooting for Andruw because the Rangers need a genuine RH (or SH) power bat between Hamilton and Blalock. Cruz isn’t consistent enough yet.
@auditer – you haven’t been to the games with my goofy family. My 2 boys, who usually don’t eat jack squat, wipe me out. Pizza, cotton candy, popcorn, ice cream cookie sandwich, lemon chill.
Wife thinks going to a game means you get a tshirt. I’ve gotten killed out there this year. But it’s worth it. When I went as kid, my dad rushed out of there in the 7th to beat traffic and we barely had enough for the tickets. So I treat it like an event now.
But walk around, I see people spending a fortune out there.
Not to quibble with what’s been a great game, but couldn’t we save O’Day for a slightly more important situation?
I’m saying this of course without being able to think of a single suitable other option.
RF, wash is keeping us guessing.
@Old Tom
Neither is AJ so far, we will see if he can continue this with an increase in playing time.
We have an * for OUR records now?!?! i hope we never do drug testing! LOL
@becca – In all seriousness, the community that’s springing up here in Evan’s hood has been so flame free that I’m a little bit amazed.
Fun and civility on the internets! Huzzah!
And Wash has been on a roll tonight with his decisions, so let’s give him this one.
@WacoGreg- Yeah, but it may be a delayed tweet because in his pre-game interview he said he tweeted about a burrito and that never came up so…I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.
i have found that the clear, as opposed to the cream, really gives me the extra boost i need for live game blogging.
@WacoGreg: Wilson has definitely matured on the mound. Got a column in the notebook on that to write.
@Dylan: O’Day hasn’t pitched much lately and threw only eight pitches last night. The rest of the bullpen was used last night, so O’Day will be down tomorrow with Wilson and Francisco completely rested.
@Dylan: It is refreshing isn’t it.
It likely won’t last.
Ehren, just 9 inning and extra innings.
Drug tests are not so bad, we get randomly checked at work all the time.
BALLGAME
How long since we were in first by ourselves?
Heading to post-game show, but this is showing that it would be comment No. 499. We can’t leave it hanging at 499, can we?
“First Place Texas Rangers”
Well hot dang, we accomplished the 11 games over .500 mark finally!
Ahhh, fist place all to our selves and did it in their place.
Very inpressive.
Hullo win column. I love that this team is showing some such fight. Bring on the “Post All-Star break decline” haterz!
@WacoGreg – Eff off (I kid…)
OK….I’m OFFICIALLY a believer for the rest of the year. I won’t panic, even if we get in a funk.
@wacogreg – first playoff was 95 (lost to Ms). WS in 96. I lived up there 93-99 while in law school and for the first 3 years i worked.
my first time in Yankee stadium was the no-hitter by the jim abbott (he of the no hand).
HELLO WIN COLUMN!!!
@evan: last I checked, it was 503
great game played by everyone night all see you tommorrow
Good game, Vinny looked great, bat’s very big tonight. Couldn’t have wrote it better myself.
Good hanging with everyone tonight.
Let’s go get us a sweep in Seattle.
concern anybody that its been a while since a starter went past the 6th?
Evan, what will I get if I can get you 600 tomorrow?
I’m out for the night! as always, it’s been a real pleasure.
@Jack Daddy
So we lost to the yanks in 96??
I am confused, off to wikipedia I go.
Too late for me to pick Jones in the HR pool in the 1st, 3rd and 5th? Yes? No?
G’night all…
Maybe it was you that pointed this point, but it’s worth saying again. Since 2001 the team with the best record against the other al west teams, has won the division.
FYI – Ranger players who have hit 3 home runs in a game: Andruw Jones, Brad Wilkerson, Mark Teixeira, Kevin Mench, Alex Rodriguez, Juan Gonzalez.
One of these names is not like the others.
Jack, no, not since we have been useing spot starters like hunter and nippert.
It is hard to get thru 6 with such young guys.
@JackDaddy- yes, concerning. The prospects don’t look good with Hunter going tomorrow.
@Jack: no concern yet on my part. well see how millwood does his next start.
OK 94=strike shortened season right?
then:
Lost the 1996 AL Division Series to the New York Yankees (AL-East), 1-3.
Lost the 1998 AL Division Series to the New York Yankees (AL-East), 0-3.
Lost the 1999 AL Division Series to the New York Yankees (AL-East), 0-3.
I am sure you all already know this but I am trying to refresh my memory.
Yeah I picked Jones in the 5th to homer, how does that work anyways?
do after game entries count? LOL
Dylan, but those were the only ones wilky hit while he was here to go with his 200 K’s.
@Jack: not concerned yet. if it were to continue AFTER the All-Star break, yes, I would be concerned.
@WacoGreg: The game is based on the first homer hit of the game.
“One of these names is not like the others.”
HAHA I think mench might qualify as well.
@WacoGreg: Yes, Rangers lost to Yanks in 96. Jack Daddy was talking about the Yankees playoff yrs.
okay i’m officially gone for the night. lol
@Waco: we are picking the FIRST Rangers homer. After the first one, nothing else counts in the Pool.
@Ehren:
Ok that is what I thought, never saw the rules officially but I had seen it “close” early.
Waco, mench had his moments, wilky had 1 moment.
Yeah I guess Mench had his moments, I bet in a few years all we will remember is Shrek though.
Well goodnight again everyone, catch you soon.
@waco: i already do remember only shrek
Good night, John Boy!
we’re really in a sweet spot right now….it’s in our hands to put some distance on both seattle and la again with the schedule in our favor…..need to open that can of nuggie-ass and hold them down on the ground………
and cj really looks like a teammate…..i think he probably was before but his california wack gets him looking arrogant at times…..now he’s looking like a teammate…..
@obagain – good point.
wanna here something weird – when i read above that hunter was going tomorrow, I got excited!! that’s a “second” tier prospect (that label may be a bit premature, btw) that’s made 6 starts in career. But i love him!
@wacogreg:
- what parttime ranger fan said – i was talking about NYY playoffs. somewhere in there i got confused on what you were asking.
yes 96 was our first playoff. so i had watched just about every rangers game for 20 years. started my first job out of school that september. HAD TO WORK THE NIGHT OF GAME 1 – our only playoff win EVER. Sucked!
@Jack: don’t get me wrong. just because we would call them “second-tier” right now doesn’t mean they won’t end up being excellent big-leaguers. Usually prospects are classified because of talent. The things that get most players to the big leagues are the intangibles. Perseverence, focus, work ethic, adaptability, determination, coachability, etc. Also, “second-tier” in our organization is “first-tier” in most of the others. Personally, I love Hunter and I think he’s here to stay. And just look at how much he has improved since last year! That is because of the intangibles, not the talent.
i love the rangers!
