Tom Hicks: Rangers Won’t Rule Out Pursuing Elite-Level Addition (Looking At You, Roy Halladay)

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Don’t necessarily rule out the Rangers getting involved in Roy Halladay trade talks just because of something like finances.

Owner Tom Hicks, making a field visit from his summer home in La Jolla, Calif., said he would consider a deal to add a front line player. Toronto has recently announced that it would be willing to listen to offers for RHP Roy Halladay.

“Any time you’ve got yourself a well-stocked farm system, you’ve got the opportunity to do something like that,” Hicks said of a trade that might add to the team’s payroll burden. “We’re going to be very careful about and only consider it if we think it helps be a winning team, a contending team over each of the next five years.”

“It’s obviously something [GM] Jon Daniels is working on,” Hicks added. “But we are going to be very judicious. We’ve worked too hard to put ourselves in this position to jeopardize it.”

hmmm… Hard to guage what that means. I was sure the Rangers were not able to add his salary but I guess it could be an option. I wonder if Padilla and Hank would be involved which would free up well over 15 mil.

I sincerely hope we are not going to do this, because this guy does not have many top years left in his tank. This would do about as much for us as Tex did for the Braves. Except we would have to give up more, and probably would get less out of the deal.

he uses 5 years to code that halliday is not in the mix as a 1 1/2 year rental……..makes a lot of sense…….halliday doesn’t make sense at all in the plan the rangers have been implementing……..they need to stay the course……..

I want a summer home in La Jolla….

I might be in the minority, but I do the deal provided a few contingencies are met:

    1. In no way do I do a deal without an extension getting done. I would want a 72 hour window to negotiate an extension

    2. Under no circumstance is Smoak, Kins, Elvis, or Josh to be included in the deal

    3. Everyone else is fair game, provided I will only trade one of the Holland/Feliz/Perez pitching trio.

I think any deal would start with Feliz (i prefer to keep Holland), Kiker, C. Davis, and probably Valejo or Borbon (don’t want to trade him, but would for right guy). I don’t think Toronto would take Hank or Padilla, so we would be picking up a little salary for this year, but would lose Hank and Padilla deal in the offseason.

My basis for all this is that there is no need to develop such a great system and not use it. You don’t win the world series with the a great AA team. You win by turning the prospects into commodities you need to fill holes or put you over the top.

this may have some legs..the guy is definitely having some cash flow problems but he also know that this will be his last year of owning the team–he may not care about the stocked farm system and wants to realize his last chance of standing on the podium in a championship locker game..I can’t help but think that the guy couldn’t come up with $10-12 million to pay the guy for when he’s here given who some of his buddies are

    How about:

    Michael Main
    Joaquin Arias
    Boscan or Wieland
    Moreland, Smith, Golson, Beltre(?)
    Manuel Pina or Tomas Telis

No way I am getting rid of: Perez, Feliz, Holland, Borbon, Davis/Smoak, Kiker, Beavan, Font or Ross

The real person to ask is Bud Selig – would the league approve a big trade to a team it just had to bail out financially?

  • Brett in SD

When you seek emergency bailout financing from MLB to service your debt, you don’t take on a large contract in a trade without the consent of your lender (in this case MLB). Methinks Hicks is blowing some of that legal La Jolla weed smoke.

I would make Holland and Andrus untouchable. I would then offer one of either Feliz/Smoak, a secondary pitching prospect, a catcher, Marcus Lemon, and a high upside player player like Wilmer Font.

So in total, it would be something like: Feliz, Beavan, Teagarden, Lemon and Font for Halladay and Barajas. I think that is a pretty competitive offer that few teams could match or beat.

I’d even be okay with dealing both Feliz and Smoak together in a package, provided that Halladay is signed to an extension. But under no condition would I trade Holland or Andrus. I think 5 years of either one of those two players is worth more than 1.5 years of Halladay.
